Steve, that is a wonderful idea, just another example of how well you communicate, and keep your district informed. Thank you

And don't many of those houses have an illegal "bonus" apartment carved out of much of the garage! I've seen for sale listings on Craig's List that say as much. Why aren't city inspectors all over these places?

Is the code open source so that it can be improved or extended by others?

Thank you for the mapping. It is very useful. Can you also provide the written text from "Jersey City Ward E Police Event Reports" for those who prefer the written text instead of waiting for the map to download, clicking on every number and then clicking on every balloon? Do you know the time of day of the crimes? Thanks again.

Speaking of crime, I read on the Newport message board that there was a rape earlier this week inside the Lincoln apartment building on 10th Street. Apparently the victim was living on the first floor and the suspect came in through a window.

This is great, good start on the map. It will become more useful if it is updated frequently.

Also, people need to remember to always report these crimes so it can be added to the statistics.

Steven...this is truly a useful tool! How can this technology be added to the city's website for use by all residents in each ward? I'm continually impressed by you and all your efforts.

Too bad I don't live there anymore but still...excellent job!!

You got it right, that is the proper link. It loads slowly at first (which we are working on) but it works well and quickly once it is up.

One quick thing though, the Map for Ward Awareness button is linking to freality.org/maps which doesn't seem to load.

Absolutely pleased, Steve! Thanks for informing us.

I looked into this a while back, made some calls, and came to the decision that transparency just doesn't exist when it comes to crimefighting. See the original post:

I'd love to see this info made available regularly. Thanks for your efforts, Steve!

Mapping Crime in Ward E - Steven Fulop
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Please read crime mapping info for ward e

As one of nine council people I don?t have direct say over policing matters, although I will say that I feel fortunate that we have a hard working team in the east district and Captain McDonough who is very hands on in attending community groups and forthcoming with information.

While I don?t personally have the ability to move police officers or policing activity/schedules I have taken the approach with some help on the technology front from friends to try and use mapping software to make sure that people in ward "e" are fully in the loop as to trouble areas. My personal goal with this is to create more awareness, which in my view will hopefully lead to more safety and help our residents/neighborhood watch groups.

If you find this helpful I will continue to work to have it done for you every month and continue trying to create as much transparency as possible to activities in our ward, to focus on awareness, and hopefully move us forward

Directions
1) www.Stevenfulop.com
2) Click on Ward awareness button on bottom of the screen
3) Click on an number on the right side of page to grid crime map appropriately

I would be remiss if I didn't write a special thanks to Pablo and Jeff for helping with this project

I'm with you 100%. They are horrifying, truly. Another addendum to what JPHurst is saying: there's one guy who has been at the new construction in the heights gig for a long time, and I'm sure he's been off at least once or twice on a thing or two permit/payoff-wise.

What's so strange is, there are new construction buildings (I'm thinking of one off Webster and Reservoir, southeast side) that are really decent and nothing to complain about. Is it really that much more expensive?

Don't even get me started on the cutaway driveways. You just can't convince me that even 1/4 of those are legal. Meanwhile, on my block, we can't even get a permit!

John Gomez wrote an excellent Legends and Landmarks Column a few months ago concerning the "cookie cutter" architecture which is going up in some parts of the city.

There are some individuals who choose to do it differently, both withf new construction and with restoration of older buildings. Unfortunately, the desire to make a quick buck often trumps this work.

Some protection exists in historic districts. But outside of the historic districts, there are very few limits on what can be approved, particularly if the owner is in compliance with existing zoning.

Not too shy to talk

Is there ANYONE who can stop the construction of these two story box houses going up all over the heights? I mean I'm all for new construction but they are all identical, and butt ugly to boot. On New York Ave. & webster alone there are about 10 of these things, not to mention that they have driveways, removing one street space per house at the least. Who keeps handing out these building permits? Is there any ordinance limiting the amount of like styled houses? More importantly, who was the architect, for he needs a beating.

My first reaction is that it's money well spent if I never see Healy's drunk and corpulant body naked again. On top of the aesthetic offense, it gives drunken Irishmen a bad name. If the "consultant" is paid from private funds (I'd give that about a 0.01% chance), I will happily toss in a month's worth of coffee money.

Yea, assuming that he's learned his lesson, $75K to fix that embarassment in front of NOL shipping would be a start in terms of better ways to spend our money to beautify JC.

Did they mention who is picking up the freight for that handler? If it's out of Healy's pocket or from his party, fine. But if it's tax money, I find it a bit excessive.

That's some serious cake for someone to dress the guy. It's also money being spent to "spin" him, which seems like a party job rather than a government job.

Next time any of you homeowners cut a check for your property taxes, remember you did your part to make sure Healy's belt matched his shoes.

This is assuming it's being paid with city money. If it is, it's a perfect example of how utterly out of touch politicians are. He's not the President. He's not the Governor. He's a Mayor in a city that isn't exactly flush with cash. Think of what $76,000 would do to, oh, I don't know, fix the collapsing walkway at the waterfront that's been busted for 3 years now.

Is it the penthouse. I knew the owners of that place -the wife is a real estate agent and used to own the the candle shop next to Presto's on Warren. And the husband worked Deutche bank and made a killing.

The corner brownstone -no sure about the price. I thought it had 3 apartments that can be rented out? I walk by there everyday-- I would not want to live on the corner-- too much traffic and noise.

I don't think "loft" is the right word. It's an 11,000 square foot converted warehouse. It's a single family home -- not a unit in a larger building. I know some neighbors who have been inside, and it's as amazing as the pictures in the listing, but he's never going to get that kind of money. He definitely bought the building for under $1M, and I can't imagine he has more than $3M total invested in it.

Jon Stewart Purchases $5.8 Million Manhattan Loft

Jon Stewart has purchased a $5.8 million Manhattan loft, according to The New York Observer.

John Stewart recently bought a 6,000-square-foot Tribeca spread in the building that once housed the Wetlands Preserve, a nightclub with an environmental bent. The duplex penthouse has exposures on three sides, a 600-square-foot terrace and a private rooftop.

Prudential's Douglas Elliman had the listing.

Re: What's this letter from Warren G. Curtin about?

Nothing in the guidelines requires that you use Marvin windows. Marvin windows are often recommended simply because they know how to do the job. On top of that, the contractor I had from Marvin knew exactly how to describe the scope of work and what designs to recommend that met the guidelines, so it made my application to the Historic Preservation Officer that much easier. That being said, you can use any other brand of window that meets the guidelines.

The proposed revisions to the ordinance would have treated painting as "routine maintenance" that would have been exempted from approval. In the past, we've had people who wanted to paint their houses red, white, and blue. In any event, it is my understanding that the HPO is not nearly as strict on colors as he has been made out to be. In fact, in the article which outlines Mr. Curtin's purported ordeal, it was clear that he was ultimately allowed flexibility in colors.

Regarding informing potential purchasers, I think this was a good idea. At one point, former Assemblywoman Elba Perez-Cinciarelli has sponsored a bill that would require such disclosure at the time of purchase. VVPA has advocated this for quite some time. Unfortunately the bill didn't go anywhere.

As for a "sub committee" of residents "not affiliated with either side," I'm not sure what this means. The proponents of changing the guidelines had their opportunity to present their case to councilman Fulop, to the three other neighborhood associations, and to three commisioners on the HPC. EVERYONE was opposed.

I suppose you can find someone who is willing to support some of the changes and then call that person a "neutral." But I don't see the opponents of the changes as being on a "side" that needs to be mediated. They are property owners, taxpayers, and neighbors, and they have overwhelmingly come to the conclusion that the guidelines should not be weakened.

Re: What's this letter from Warren G. Curtin about?

The all or nothing approach to dealing with this issue isn?t working. It would be nice to have it examined more carefully and perhaps a sub-committee of residents not affiliated with either side could also play a role this time.

There are colors suited for a historic district and as a homeowner, I expect to be given more choices then just brown. I also expect to be able to choose the brand of my windows. Marvin makes a great window but they?re very expensive. There are other wood window options and this choice should be left up to the homeowner.

In other historic districts, if you are replacing a window that is not bigger or smaller but is the same size, then you don?t need special approval or even a permit. They allow both wood and vinyl and give you a choice in color.

If you?re going to start informing people who are interested in purchasing homes in the historic district here in Jersey City, then by all means, tell them the truth. Tell them that even if they have vinyl windows now that once they?re ready to replace them that they?ll be forced to install wood windows, that the brand of the window will have to be Marvin and that you won?t be allowed to select the color of paint. Because these were the complaints coming out of Hamilton Park last year.

No. I would like to see it replaced with either a) a historically accurate reproduction, or b) a modern fence that is in good repair, and distinguishes itself from the original.

What is not acceptable is to replace it with something that is "sort of" like what "could have" been there.

Except, of course, that it wasn't.
