This sounds like a good plan, I'd like to read an report on impact. Corizine would get some credibility with me if he can pull this off. He'd better not touch income tax or it will get ugly very quickly.

Gun that killed mom recovered, police say
Thursday, October 19, 2006
By MICHAELANGELO CONTE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Ballistics tests have linked a handgun found during a drug investigation to the murder of a Jersey City mother killed in the crossfire of an Aug. 6 shootout in front of a Martin Luther King Jr. Drive club, officials said.

The .357 Magnum was found in a backyard on Fulton Avenue during the drug investigation that resulted in the arrest of nine people, and seizure of three guns, 100 grams of cocaine and $8,000, said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio.

That drug investigation was a spin-off of the investigation into the murder of Adia Reid, 26, of Monticello Avenue, DeFazio said.

Reid was waiting to enter the former Rendezvous club - now The Penthouse - when the shooting started. Reid is survived by her 8-year-old daughter, Elise Madison.

Calvin Clark, 19, of Fulton Avenue; Lamont Martin, 25, of Clerk Street; and Dennis Reid, 31, of Randolph Avenue, were arrested on Oct. 6 and charged with Reid's murder, DeFazio said. Police have also charged Damielle Tondee, 23, Garfield Avenue, in the murder and Tondee remains at large, DeFazio said.

"It's our theory the weapon was wielded by Calvin Clark," DeFazio said. Homicide detectives believe the murder occurred during a shootout between Tondee and his associates when they squared off against Clark, Martin and Dennis Reid, DeFazio said.

The shooting was "apparently related to a prior incident where Tondee shot at Clark because of a prior incident where Clark allegedly shot associates of Tondee," DeFazio said.

Anyone with information on Tondee's whereabouts is asked to call Hudson County Prosecutor's Office homicide detectives at (201) 915-1345.

Korean War vets salute deal to access memorial
Thursday, October 19, 2006
By KEN THORBOURNE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

The battle over the Korean War Memorial at the foot of Washington Street in Jersey City has ended with a compromise.

Local residents, who have enjoyed a street sealed off from normal vehicle traffic for more than a decade, will get to hold to this open space, and nine parking spaces are being set aside next to the monument for public use, the local councilman said yesterday.

"The end goal is to give the veterans complete access to visit it (the memorial) and increase open space for the city," said Ward E Councilman Steve Fulop, who plans to introduce an ordinance next week to carry out the change.

"In reality we are growing the roster of open space," he added. "It's going to be a win for the veterans."

Former Army Sgt. Joseph Swinson - one of the members of the Korean War Veterans of Hudson County who had fought to reopen the street - gave the compromise a thumbs up.

"I think it's going to be good," Swinson said. "They are going to open the memorial from 8 in the morning to 8 at night. And there's going to be parking for anybody who wants to visit the monument."

Gerry Bakirtjy, president of the Historic Paulus Hook Association, explained that six of the spaces are strictly for the visiting the memorial. The three handicap spaces can be used for visiting the memorial as well as the nearby waterfront and Liberty National Park, he said.

The parking spaces should be in place within the month, Swinson added.

Not everyone endorses the plan.

"We are totally adverse to this," said Sonia Maldonado, president of the Newport Waterfront Association. "It will be used to give exclusivity to (the) Portside (complex) and the Paulus Hook residents, which increases their property values. They want to keep everyone else out."

Want property tax reform? Consider municipal consolidations mergers- Jersey City, Hoboken & Bayonne?

Want tax reform? Consider mergers
Jersey Journal - Joe Albright - Thursday, October 19, 2006

Solutions for property tax relief - real or theoretical - are resembling two-stage rockets. Neither is getting off the ground.

Two elements are entwined in the problem - immediate relief or long-term reform. And it also is ingrained with politics - Democrats are feeling the most pressure, since their 22-18 control of the state Senate and 49-31 margin in the Assembly are at stake in the November election next year, when all 120 seats will be contested.

Gov. Jon S. Corzine, of Hoboken, wants remedies enacted by this Jan. 1 to reduce the state's highest-in-the nation property taxes, which average $6,000 statewide, and legislators on four committees charged with tax relief responsibilities face a Nov. 15 deadline to come up with their recommendations.

Without questioning the sincerity of lawmakers burdened with the issue, they are still shadow boxing - no one has landed a hard punch on the target.

With, perhaps, one exception.

In June, state Sen. Joseph Kyrillos, R-Monmouth, reintroduced a bill he first advanced three years ago - the Municipal Alignment Reorganization and Consolidation Commission.

Under his proposal, a nine-member commission - with Corzine and the bipartisan legislative leadership each appointing four members, and the chief justice of the state Supreme Court naming the ninth - would have 24 months to come up with a list of proposed municipal consolidations.

The commission members would consider geographic factors, impact on local economies, potential tax savings, reduction in government costs, and community interests.

They would then present their recommendations to Corzine and the Legislature, who would be given 12 months to review them.

Using an approach like that employed when decisions are on military base closings nationally, the Legislature would have to either approve or reject the entire proposed list. There also is some sentiment to allow voters in the affected communities to decide by referendum whether to accept the merged status.

It may be the best chance for the Property Tax Relief Mission to get underway with the famous words, "We have lift off. All systems go."

Thanks for the support, Rory. The real point of my post, though, was to point out that icricket is likely a shill for the LeFraks and related developers, and that icricket's posts should be held suspect. It just bothers me to see developers using such weasel tactics to influence opinion.

icricket's response has been to call me paranoid. I'm not going to beat this to death, but it's hardly paranoid to think developers would do a thing like that, and icricket has been cheerleading on this board for a long time. icricket's suggestion that s/he is too multicultural for me is almost as bizarre as her/his suggestion that the LeFraks single-handedly started the revitalization of Jersey City. Anyone who was around back then, and I was, could see that a waterfront building boom was inevitable. It would have happened even without Schundler wrapping the area up in tax abatements and giving it to the LeFraks. And we'd all be better off without those ugly green and white skyscrapers.

I have to 2nd 4Baileys comment on Wine Library. If you ever find yourself out that way, it is well worth your time to stop in. They are very friendly, helpful, have a huge selection and some very good prices. Prices in their gourmet cheese section are not bad either. I stop by there whenever I am in the neighborhood.

I don't think the A+P is closed. I was there a week and a half ago. However they ARE remodelling while the store is open which is a pain in the butt. The store is half stocked and you get weird new aisle combinations like the bread and laundry detergent aisle.

Hopefully it will be finished soon.

Along with the thread drift to wine stores?

Again, if you have a car and don?t mind a short ride, Wine Library (www.winelibrary.com) in Springfield, not far from the Short Hills mall, generally has an excellent selection and some of the best prices in the area. The owner is very ambitious about taking on Zachy?s for depth, but is looking to keep prices low to turn around inventory quick. They?ve recently expanded the store and added a gourmet section (D?Artagnan stuff, cheese, etc.). Well worth the car ride.

BTW ? I?m not affiliated with them or ITB ?just a customer since ?95.

and you're in a comfortable majority here - nice a capella. may be that's why i enjoy being a contrarian.
i certainly do not object to diff. opinions. so long as it is done in a civil dialogue . i can express myself much more candidly - and that is my tendency;), but i do try to check it.
in my personal opinion lefrak single handedly started the revitalization of jc - to deny that is kinda short-sighted.
yes, it could've been done better ,etc. but it is what it is and it's getting better with each new building. most of manhattan is quite ugly, but people live there not for beauty ... and now, that development of waterfront really took off - it's so-o much prettier. seems like they're at least making an effort. i was stunned by goldman getting koolhaas! that's like a cherry on a cake;). but plenty of people hate him too...
so 'the low-risers' will get their gull's cove and liberty north and 'the hi-risers' get the close waterfront. i am willing to visit the whole foods whereever it is ;).

From NJ.COM

Five Hudson men caught in nationwide kiddie porn sweep
Five Hudson County men were among 125 people arrested nationwide, accused of subscribing to hard-core child pornography sites that included children as young as infants engaged in sex acts with adults, federal officials announced this afternoon.

"Our intention is to attack child pornography at all levels ? including the demand that fuels the market in child exploitation," U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie said of the sweep, dubbed Operation Emissary.

"This case should clearly demonstrate to those pedophiles who believe that the Internet provides them with anonymity, that they are clearly mistaken. The Internet has a global reach, but so do we," Christie said.

Officials said 17 New Jersey residents were charged, among them Michael Brown, 51, a grocery store clerk, and Micah Reagor, 29, a chef, of Jersey City; Jason Faccibene, 32, a telecommunications worker, and George Payne, 34, an information technology manager, of Hoboken; and Kearny resident William Morehouse, 63, a medical supply representative.

Federal prosecutors say the New Jersey men possessed or received child pornography on their home or work computers.

Oh yeah - icricket, you are forgetting that most of the nasties on this board are anti-real estate development penniless loser renters who are worried that they will be priced out of DT and will have to move to Greenville or Newark.

That's the ONLY motivation for their negative posts.

Perhaps if they spent less time at jclist and more time figuring out how to make money they would be happier.

Seems I missed the comments about liquor stores and wine stores before this thread took a turn onto a tangent, but for those that are interested, and have a car, I have two recommendations:
Riverside Wine Merchants (West NY or Edgewater?) has a good selection of mid-range wines, and monthly wine tastings. They also have presale (read-heavy discounts) opportunities throughout the year. I've never bought a bad presale wine from them. Super nice too.
About 10 minutes south of Newark Airport on the 1&9 is a liquor store. I forget the name, but it is on the northbound side of the road with a big sign that says "WINE". 20% mixed case discounts and a great selection of new world wines.

enjoy

"Beautiful Hudson River side property"

I guess you didn't live in dirty Jersey City in the 80s to see what that property looked like before the Newport area was developed. Beautiful? A more appropriate collection of adjectives:

Oil filled
Smelly
Dangerous
Junkyard
Toxic
Barren
Rotten
Dump
Ratty
Scary
"CAUTION - DO NOT ENTER"

I?ve never been to Whole Foods but if it comes way downtown, I?ll give it a try. I do miss the A&P; didn?t know they were renovating, but it was a civilized shopping experience in comparison to ShopRite.

JC List is a message board, but friendly? I can hardly say it is. I suppose the spicy threads make it more interesting but what?s the sense in bashing the more positive attitude posters we have, like icricket, caitlinella, and others, just because they?re pro-development. I moved from the elegant Newport to run down Ham Park pre-Shore Club days in search of a little condo and went through heavy-duty withdrawal symptoms. I wish somebody had warned me and I may never get over it. Luckily new development projects are headed this way?.and Hamilton Park will be run down no more. Look out Paulus Hook? you?ll soon have some competition!

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) took over both what the INS (Immigration Naturalization Service) and the Customs folks used to do. Also, ICE was moved from the Department of Justice (DOJ), which used to supervise the INSA, to the Dept. of Homeland Security. So any immigration or customs bust likely would have a vehicle that mentions both ICE and it's boss, Homeland Security.

Now that is clarified, and making NO ACCUSATIONS WHATSOEVER, I really hope that the ICE agents were there for CDs/DVDs and not this . . .

http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/10/18/child.porn/index.html

which was run, in part, by ICE and which went down today . . . yuck.
