West Side: City shuts market -- inspectors find mice droppings, foul smell, refrigeration violations

CITY SHUTS MARKET
Inspectors find mice droppings, foul smell, refrigeration violations

KEN THORBOURNE -- JERSEY JOURNAL -- JAN 19

A supermarket on Jersey City's West Side was ordered closed this week after health inspectors found evidence of mice infestation, officials said.

The Met Foods store, 503 West Side Ave., was closed Wednesday around 6 p.m., Jersey City Chief Health Inspector H. James Boor said.

Inspectors found mouse droppings on cutting boards, under the deli slicer, along the floor and on several shelves and trays, Boor said.

"They need to get the mice out," Boor said. "Downstairs in the basement, they had a open box of powdered mashed potatoes and you could see the mouse droppings right in it."

However, he said, there were no signs the mice had actually gnawed on food.

Boor said the inspectors descended on the store Wednesday following two months of phone calls from customers complaining about a foul odor in the store and general uncleanliness.

In fact, the mice were just one of several health violations inspectors found in the store, Boor said.

In the basement, two sewer drains had been left open to drain water from a leaky refrigeration unit - the likely culprit for the foul smell, Boor said.

In addition, a refrigeration unit containing eggs, sausages and canned ham wasn't cold enough to meet the health code, he said. Food in the unit had internal temperatures between 53 and 55 degrees, he said; state law requires units to keep food below 41 degrees.

As a result of the overheated fridge, the store had to discard 350 dozen eggs, 75 pounds of sausage, and 45 pounds of canned hams, Boor said.

Frank Sayim, owner of the store, was reluctant yesterday to take issue with the inspectors' findings.

"We will do whatever clean-up they are asking us to do," Sayim said. "We are hoping to finish in a couple of days."

Boor said he expected the store to be ready for reinspection next week.

Local residents didn't seem surprised to learn the store had been shuttered by the city.

Andrew Johnson, who went to the store yesterday hoping to buy cough syrup, said he had never bought meats or produce there.

"The smell is too bad," he said.

"I figured it (the store being shut down) would happen at one point or another," Johnson said. "I just was hoping it wouldn't be today."

I park on Paterson Plank -- no parking permit required, just street cleaning a few times a week. If your car is a company car, I'm assuming you use it during the day. So you could theoretically park in front of your new building (or in the vicinity) overnight, and utilize the parking on Paterson Plank on weekends or for emergencies, etc. Works for me!

That's good news, but I'd like to see more white collar prosecutions that also have a devastating effect on the community with funds go missing, people losing jobs, families suffer and businesses close down.

Heights: Guilty pleas from 3 heroin kingpins

Thursday, January 18, 2007
By MICHAELANGELO CONTE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Three leaders of a Hoboken-based drug ring that moved up to 20,000 bags of heroin through Hudson County each week were living the high life on drug profits, officials said. But yesterday all three pleaded guilty to federal drug crimes carrying sentences of up to 25 years in prison, officials said.

Jose "Nutty" Gonzalez, 25, of Third Street in Union City, Rory Praylow, 28, of Jackson Street in Hoboken, and Manuel "Murder" Suarez, 31, of Palisade Avenue in Jersey City, pleaded guilty in federal court in Manhattan yesterday morning, officials said.

They were among eight people busted after the six-month investigation that came to a head last March 6, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said.

Just after midnight that day, Hoboken police, working with the federal Drug Enforcement Agency and the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office, spotted leaders of the cartel meeting at the Hess Station on 14th Street in Hoboken, reports said.

"We are very gratified with the successful prosecution of these major drug dealers," Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said of the pleas entered in federal court in Manhattan. "It's an outstanding example of the cooperation of law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies."

During the six-month investigation numerous searches of locations and vehicles were conducted, resulting in seizure of 27,000 bags of heroin, four loaded semiautomatic handguns and a bulletproof vest, officials said. One of the guns recovered was later connected to a shooting in Hoboken on Super Bowl Sunday last year, DeFazio said.

Also arrested and facing charges as a result of the drug probe are Philip "Spud" Pasquale, 22, and Darryl Oliver, 35, both in Hoboken; Jason "Jay" Santos, 25, and Alex Gonzalez, 21, both of Jersey City; and Mary Gama, 27, of Union City, officials said.

How big a 'green roof' will be needed to offset the Holland Tunnel traffic and the jet exhaust from EWK? It's just more spin. I'd rather have an end to litter than a eco-condo. And I think one job for anybody in the public sector is enough.

I guess it's just 'the Fog of Development'

Great place to see Nora's Delivered Vacant! Here's the info:

CRITICS CHOICE: GREAT DOCUMENTARIES

The New York Film Critics Circle is comprised of writers from New York-based newspapers and magazines. Each year, the Museum presents a series of films chosen and introduced by members of this prestigious group. For the 8th Annual NYFCC series, critics have selected nonfiction films that are as notable for their cinematic artistry as for their subject matter. Each film will be introduced by the critic who chose it, and in many cases, screenings will be followed by discussions with the filmmakers.

Stuart Klawans introduces
Delivered Vacant
Sunday, January 21, 3:00 p.m.

1992, 118 mins., 16mm. Directed by Nora Jacobson. The great obsession of contemporary America?real-estate values?meets its match in the obsession of a tireless documentarian in this complex, absorbing, richly populated film about the gentrification of Hoboken, New Jersey. Hoboken? To outsiders, that was either a punch line or else a promising site for redevelopment. To natives, it was memory and community. To Nora Jacobson, Hoboken was the fit subject for eight years of filming?enough for her to get the whole epic story. ?Stuart Klawans, The Nation

Re: Manzo: Asks blind trusts for big earners with power

This guy is like Charlie Schumer with less brains, success and media access. "Currently, state legislators can invest as they please in the market, but they have to disclose their investments annually. Manzo said many legislators disclose ownership of a mutual fund, without divulging the fund's portfolio." Manzo might want to learn that mutual funds' portfolios are public information and can easily be obtained.

If "exorbitant wealth is often the product of a diverse portfolio" then doesn't the very diversity of the portfolio make one less likely to benefit any given company that one is invested in? I worry a lot more about some broke-ass politician taking bribes from local businessmen than a rich guy with an index fund.

The comic relief is, "I am certain that this measure will work to preserve the integrity of elected officials..." Certain? Preserve?

Quote:

Asks blind trusts for big earners with power

JARRETT RENSHAW -- JERSEY JOURNAL -- JAN 13

Assemblyman Lou Manzo, D-Jersey City, wants to require all state and local officials - elected and non-elected - who make at least $1 million annually to put their investments into a blind trust.

Under a bill Manzo introduced this week, wealthy government officials would have to turn over control of their investments to an individual or company, thus avoiding conflicts of interests, the assemblyman said. The requirement would extend from city officials to the governor.

"As exorbitant wealth is often the product of a diverse portfolio that may potentially overlap investing interests with governmental business, I am certain that this measure will work to preserve the integrity of elected officials who have accumulated wealth and choose to serve the public," Manzo wrote in a letter to Assembly Speaker Joe Roberts.

Currently, state legislators can invest as they please in the market, but they have to disclose their investments annually. Manzo said many legislators disclose ownership of a mutual fund, without divulging the fund's portfolio.

The public meeting for comment on T&M?s proposals for the downtown parks and open spaces, including Hamilton and Van Vorst Parks, is on Tuesday January 23, 2007 @ City Hall, 6pm.-9pm.

Please visit this site to see what is being proposed for your parks / green spaces and if you have comments, objections, or questions; the above date is the time to express them.

.

If you pass up this opportunity, you will be accepting T&M?s design and will not be able to effect any changes once implemented.

Hamilton Park is the largest of the downtown parks to be discussed and will have its first renovation since the 1970?s. A small fraction of downtown residents have been heard from to give input into what is being presented as a community consensus. As for my opinion, there are not enough decorative gardens, passive areas, and though T&M proposes reseeding the lawns, they do not provide for a supplemental sprinkler system to keep the lawns alive. You also have the issues of tennis courts, a dog run, and children?s play areas.

Please be proactive and participate in this decision making process for your park system.

[HPNA-JC-Public] Public Meeting for Open Space/Parks Master Plan (Ward E)

The public meeting date for parks and open space in Ward E is scheduled for next Tuesday evening. Details:

Tuesday,January 23, 2007
6:00 - 9:00 PM
City Hall, Anna Cucci Memorial
Council Chambers (2nd Floor)
280 Grove Street

This meeting is to review and provide feedback on the full report created by T&M, addressing park space in Ward E (including Hamilton Park). A copy of the Master Plan created by T&M is available for download at the City's website: http://www.cityofjerseycity.com/arch/
(warning, this is a large 8MB file).

The HPNA report compiling the balloting results for the community's desires for Hamilton Park's renovation can be downloaded through the documents section of our website at http://www.hamiltonpark.org/

Please come out next week to give your input on T&M's Master Plan.

I wonder how many people that attended were able to figure out that this is a "cozy" partnership between the two parties involved. The Mayor wants us to think they're really interested in "green" buildings and the Silvermans want to sell condo's. I hope the food was at least good.

The Silvermans were not interested in putting a green roof on the St. Francis Hospital and the Mayor could give two hoots about green unless it's turf inside a ballfield.

If any other developer that does business in Jersey City wishes to hire Moonlighting Maria... they had better be prepared to take some shots from residents.

I was fortunate enough to be invited to the green building seminar since I bought a home at Schroeder Lofts. There were well over 100 people and the speakers were brilliant, especially George Hawkins, the Director of NJ Future. I applaud the Silvermans for organizing this seminar. No one else is doing it. Schroeder has many 'green' elements which I like and also, the courtyard between Schroeder and the rental building (I forgot the name - Park something) will be landscaped according to the plan. At the seminar, I was told that they are doing green roof on St. Francis. Mimi, where are you getting your info? AND of course, they want to sell condos, duh.
