Corzine pays his own way

Thursday, May 17, 2007
Bu JOSH MARGOLIN
NEWHOUSE NEWS SERVICE

It was bound to be different having a mega-millionaire as governor.

Even before he decided to cover all the medical bills from his car crash, Gov. Jon Corzine was working without a salary and paying many of his own expenses.

A review of records provided by the governor's office shows Corzine paid for more than $53,000 in improvements to the state-owned governor's mansion before the crash. That's on top of $30,000 he spent last year on repairs to the official Governor's Ocean House at Island Beach State Park.

Corzine also uses private helicopters to travel around the state about as often as he uses a State Police chopper.

And in his first year as governor, Corzine returned most of the $90,000 allotted to his office expense fund.

Corzine, 60, is a former chief executive at Goldman Sachs, where he led the charge to take the financial services giant public and reaped a windfall from the deal. He entered politics with a 2000 run for U.S. Senate that cost him $60 million and spent another $42 million on his 2005 run for governor.

With a personal net worth near $200 million, he is the wealthiest governor New Jersey has ever had.

Athough Corzine usually winces when discussion turns to his money, the topic moved front and center after the April 12 crash. As he recovered at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, his staff announced Corzine's entire medical and rehabilitation cost would be covered out of his own pocket.

The bills for his treatment - including three surgeries and more than a week in intensive care - are expected to total hundreds of thousands of dollars.

It's not the first time the governor has spared the state from an expense since taking office in January 2006.

Corzine used a State Police helicopter 48 times during his first year in office to attend a wide range of functions. The trips, which cost the state about $1,200 an hour, included flights from a Marine Corps event in Morristown to a union convention in Atlantic City and from a breakfast at the governor's mansion in Princeton to a convention in Cape May.

"I have tended to use the helicopter a little more than some of the previous governors already," Corzine said during a news conference last Monday.

Former Gov. James E. McGreevey got in political hot water for using the State Police chopper 277 times in 2002, his first year in office. The next year, McGreevey used it only 19 times.

Corzine said in a recent interview that he uses a private helicopter "anytime I have a political thing or a personal thing" to get to.

He does not own a chopper (although he is a part owner of a private jet), but contracts with a private service. Corzine has spent more than $86,000 on the service since taking office, typically using it up to five times a month.

The governor paid more than $4,000 to have a chairlift installed at Drumthwacket, the governor's mansion, then had it taken out after one use because he preferred going up and down the stairs on crutches. Corzine is also paying for the pool to be heated so he can use it in his rehabilitation; that cost has not yet been calculated.

Before the crash, Corzine paid for $53,000 in improvements at Drumthwacket, including $2,100 for electrical work, more than $10,000 for painting and $17,215 for renovations and furnishings in the garden around the pool.

Like governors before him, Corzine was allotted an expense account to be used entirely at his discretion, exempt from public scrutiny. In 2006, $90,645 was deposited in the fund and it was increased to $95,000 for 2007.

For his first year in office, Corzine spent about $36,140 on events including a budget summit at Rutgers, a retreat for his Cabinet and senior staff and breakfast meetings for key officials at Drumthwacket. In the end, Corzine returned $54,505 to the state treasury.

Need $$ for parks, pols say

Thursday, May 17, 2007
By RONALD LEIR
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Hudson County politicians yesterday called on state lawmakers and Gov. Jon Corzine to renew funding for the Garden State Preservation Trust, which provides cash for acquiring green space and developing it for recreational use.

Bayonne Mayor Joseph V. Doria Jr., who is also a Democratic state senator, was joined by Assemblyman Louis Manzo, D-Jersey City, Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise and NY/NJ Baykeeper representative Greg Remaud at Richard Rutkowski Park in Bayonne to press for the replenishment of the fund, which they characterized as "near empty."

But that assessment was contradicted yesterday by state Environmental Protection Deputy Commissioner John Watson, who said about $170 million in "unappropriated" funding remained.

Asked for comment, Doria said: "That can't be. The fund is supposed to be virtually depleted. I wouldn't go with that figure."

Doria said Bayonne received $750,000 from the fund to help create Rutkowski Park from a 30-acre tract of compromised wetlands.

If the Legislature authorizes continuing the fund, Doria said Bayonne would seek money from it for additional green space at the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor.

Watson said that of the $170 million left in the fund, about $87 million is targeted for Green Acres land acquisition and development, about $85 million to save farmlands and about $21.5 million to preserve historic sites.

He said the GSPT board has agreed to use about $40 million for Green Acres land acquisition. Watson said Corzine has pledged to add $25 million to the $47 million balance - reserved for local loans and grants for developing recreational facilities - for one year only.

Corzine spokesman Brendan Gilfillan said the governor favors replenishing the fund but he wants that money to come from "a recurring revenue source," best derived from "asset monetization," meaning the sale or lease of state assets like the New Jersey Turnpike, a notion that has met with considerable opposition.

Hudson officials are proposing that voters decide whether to dedicate $175 million a year from the state sales tax from 2009 to 2038 for the fund.

PA official suggests end to toll booths

Thursday, May 17, 2007
NEWHOUSE NEWS SERVICE

The Holland Tunnel and George Washington Bridge would no longer feature toll booths under a scenario suggested this week by a senior Port Authority official.

In a speech Tuesday to a New York City business group, Anthony Shorris, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, called for a study of a possibility of an all-electronic toll collection system at the agency's six bridges and tunnels between the city and New Jersey.

Exactly how the cashless toll system would work would be determined in the study. But basically, it could work similarly to the high-speed E-ZPass lanes.

An unidentified gunman opened fire on the south side of Wilkinson Avenue early yesterday morning, injuring two people, police said.

A witness told police she saw a man cross Wilkinson around 1:30 a.m. and begin shooting before fleeing towards Ocean Avenue, reports said.

The victims told police they were walking on Wilkinson when they heard several gun shots, reports said.

One of the victims said he ran westbound then north on Martin Luther King Drive towards Bostwick Avenue, where he collapsed, according to reports. He was shot twice in the left leg, police said. The other victim ran in between two houses in order to cut through to Bostwick Avenue, reports said. He was shot in the bottom of his left foot, police said.

Police recovered a black .45 caliber handgun in the backyard of a house on Wilkinson.

A Jersey City man was assaulted by three men while walking to a bus stop Tuesday evening, police said.

According to police, the 22-year-old male victim was walking on Sullivan Drive when three men got out of a car and jumped him from behind, hitting him in the face several times. The victim could not tell police whether he was being struck by fists or other objects.

The assailants took the victim's wallet, which had $60 in cash, and his Blackberry Pearl cell phone before leaving in a white, two-door Toyota Celica, said reports.

A man was beaten by a group of men in Jersey City Tuesday evening in an apparent robbery, police said.

Police say the 21-year-old victim was walking south on Bayside Terrace when a group of males surrounded and attacked him.

A witness told police she saw about seven males, three with white t-shirts and blue jeans and four wearing black t-shirts and blue jean shorts and jeans, attack the victim, reports said.

The witness also told police that two of the attackers punched the victim in the face while another attacker rummaged through his pockets, reports said.

Shortly afterwards, the attackers ran north on Bayside Terrace and then west on Richard Street, the witness told police.

The victim suffered two bumps on the left side of his head and a bloody lip and was treated at Jersey City Medical Center, police said.

this is a shame, but it's the same crap everywhere.

my old town in the 'burbs was the same way. most cops are misfits or ex-misfits, that's all there is to it.

when i think about the people, for example, I went to high school with that I know became cops later in life, they were all in that misfit category. in other words, there were no kids who got really good grades, were well mannered, and kept their noses clean that went on to patrol the streets, so to speak.

in most towns, if you can pass the physical, you're in, and the physical is a joke at that. a family member of mine worked as a cop for 2 years before he even went to the academy.

stories like these are unfortunate, but completely expected.

PGA Tournament Coming to Jersey City in '09

PGA tournament coming to Jersey City in '09

By Matthew Futterman
The Star-Ledger
May 16, 2007

The PGA confirmed today that the Barclays tournament will come to Liberty National Golf Course in Jersey City in 2009.

"It is going to be part of the rotation," Laura Neal, a PGA tour spokeswoman, said.

Peter Truell, a spokesman for Barclays, also confirmed the move but declined to discuss specifics.

Getting the tournament is a coup for Liberty National, the $120 million course built by former Reebok owner Paul Fireman in the shadows of the Statue of Liberty.

The private club, with a course designed by Tom Kite, opened last year with an initiation fee of $400,000 and an exclusive membership roster that includes presidential candidate and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. The club is beginning construction of a modern, glass and steel clubhouse this year.

The Barclays, which has also been known as the Buick Classic and the Westchester Classic, has been played at the Westchester (N.Y.) Country Club for decades.

Neal said it will move to Liberty National in 2009 and might rotate among several different clubs in the New York-New Jersey area in the coming years.

"That is something that is under discussion," said Neal, who declined to name other potential sites for the event.

Maybe Rawlings should be charged with assault, but the newspaper story seems to indicate that Murray fired in the air AFTER Rawlings was already heading away.

If that's the case, I think it would be hard to show that Murray was really firing in self defense.

To me, though, the biggest news is that Jordan's has big-name Chappelle show comedians. Does Jordan's get those kinds of acts all the time? If so, maybe I have to look into hiring a babysitter.

That seems to be the only flaw in D as far as I'm concerned. I'm thrilled they added this design to the choices,as I think it greatly improves the layout of the childrens features. Given that the parking spots on McWilliams are to be returned to the park, I wonder if the north court could be bumped over east to enlarge the dog run. I imported the drawing into CAD and scaled it using the size of the tennis court. Here's the relative sizes of the 2 proposed dog runs and increased size runs for larger dogs. Keep in mind that this idea leaves the small dog run intact, greatly increasing the overall dog run area over the A,B & C, and the 2 separate runs seems to have a lot of support. in square feet: Concept D large dog run=4391 concept A,B &C=7733 D enlarged by 10 ft= 5730 D enlarged by 15 ft= 6327 As you can see, the 15' enlargement only takes the run to the current court fence, and we should be gaining 20' from the parking. Given that they're resurfacing the courts, adding 15" to one side and taking it off the other shouldn't be that expensive. Would this make D more palatable? I thought of that too, but if you combine that with dynamic fare tolls it should spread out the congestion. A lot of people would wait 1/2-1hr if it saved them $5/day.

Dear JCList,

Tomorrow evening, May 17th, at 6:00PM, in the 14th Floor Conference Room of 30 Montgomery St., the Zoning Board will hear my personal appeal of approvals granted for projects on Palisade Avenue (R-2 Zoning District) that do not conform to the zoning. I would welcome your support by attending this meeting and letting others know about it.

The properties in question are 342, 347 and 349 Palisade Avenue. The issues are different but to give you an example, at 342 Palisade, the project was approved as a standard 2-family house with a garage/parking when the zoning calls for a 4-story attached townhouse. There is no parking permitted on lots with less than 50Ft (due to the nature of traffic on Palisade Ave). At 349 Palisade, the project required major site plan approval because it exceeds 5,000 Sq. Ft., yet none was required.

These inappropriate/illegal approvals need to stop. I hope you will come out and support me in this effort as the zoning officer's mistakes are affecting our neighborhood and all of Jersey City.

This plan will be disastrous for we with E-ZPass, used to bypassing all the clowns who inexplicably don't. When they're forced to use it we won't have our shortcut.

I'll sign on to this plan if they make the current E-ZPass lanes 24/7 HOV.

Quote:

As a rule of thumb, a toll collector can take cash from up to 400 vehicles an hour, while an E-ZPass lane with drivers traveling under 25 miles an hour can handle about 1,400, said Scott E. LeVine, a transportation planner at the consulting firm Edwards & Kelcey.

What a irrelevant statistic when applied to a system that backs up to the toll booths much of the time, so you pass the booth at 1 mph.

Too bad the Edgewater Whole Foods is so far away. Can't really shop there in the summer because anything frozen is melted or dairy is soured by the time one gets back to JC.

Also, as to Grove Pointe's retail, Duane Reade and Starbuckies are possibilities that have been floated around on certain other boards frequented by real estate agents looking to sell units. That being said, I think Grove Pointe probably is a likely starbucks location, but nothing official yet.

I used to shop at Whole Foods in Edgewater, but I now shop at Garden of Eden, which is cheaper, and has a french creamy blue cheese that is the best in the world - The two of us go through a pound a week! They also have prepared foods that keep better than Whole Foods prepared does. If you go before 11:30 on Saturday or Sunday it is even possible to get parking right outside the store. Unfortunately its a small store so they don't have everything I need. I still go to Pathmart or ShopRite for dog food, cleaning supplies, seltzer, and paper products.
When I saw that a Trader Joes was coming to Edgewater I went to the one off of route 17 in Paramus to check it out. I wasn't impressed overall. True they are cheaper than Whole Foods and Garden of Edan, but everything is packaged. There is no butcher dept or fresh sea food dept. The cheeses were nicely displayed, but like the rest of the store it is self serve. There is no one to serve you anything or answer questions, or make suggestions. Still, the store was well laid out, the staff was friendly, and the place was packed.
