Actually, I am thinking based on my XM receiver that the radio might work for a day or two after it's reported stolen (since it takes a bit of time for the satellite to beam the "stolen/lock/cancel" signal. So maybe the crooks don't realize that it will stop working. I don't think a lot of them know the ins and outs of satellite radio.

I think with some cell phones they can be sent overseass and used on other networks even if they're blocked on the US networks.

I grew up here and over the years I have heard many different reasons for why people hang outside with their kids-from not having air conditioning to it being a cultural thing to many others. The one thing I do know is that all of the people I know (be they black, white., Latino, Asian, etc) who value a stable home life and education do not hang out with their children late at night outside especially in areas where drug-dealing and violence is rampant.

I think it has to do with the fact that a lot of these parents do not realize that their lives change when they become parents (even if they are young parents). They should not be out on the street late at night never mind with their children.

In my opinion I think just as much money should be put into parenting classes as anything else. Perhyaps money invested in that would cut down on violent attacks such as this one with 14 year olds involved.

Summer's Over, But is the Crime Wave?

The downtown has in recent years been known as the safe neighborhoods of the city, spurring redevelopment and an urban renaissance. But the success of revitalizing any city is tied closely to public safety. This summer has been a miserable failure by city officials to maintain public safety. Despite a brief presence of police following a number of assaults and a rally in the Van Vorst Park, anecdotal evidence suggests we're not much safer. Check out this list of incidents from the past few months, based on JCList postings-- which means there could be more.

Car Break In, August 29, Mercer at Jersey
Assault, August 27, Newport Parkway
Car Break In, August 27, Mercer between Varick and Jersey
Car Break In, August 27, Montgomery between Jersey and Barrow
Car Break In, July 27, Third between Jersey and Erie
Car Break In, July 12, First Between Colgate and Merseles
Car Break In, July 5, First Between Erie and Manila
Assault, June 25, Varick at York
Assault, June 19, Varick at York
Car Break In, June 14, Third at Jersey
Assault, June 17, Seventh at Brunswick
Assault, June 12, Tenth at Coles
Assault, June 1, Second at Coles
Car Break In, May 23, York between Barrow and Grove
Assault, May 14, Tenth at Coles
Assault, May 12, Erie at Fourth

There are two questions still unanswered. 1. How much longer does this have to go on before the police and city leaders give a hoot? 2. How much longer can this go on before people start fleeing the downtown like its 1968?

sorry to hear about your Sirius. I would go nuts without mine!

I don't think crooks like that reaise or care about things being linked to an account (even cell phones) because its still a peice of electronics and apparently they all have some kind of value (for whatever purpose, ten bucks for crack?) after you cut them off from their service when its stolen.

That's really awful. At least it will hopefully be instructive to others -- leave NOTHING of any value whatsoever visible in your car. No CDs. No tapes. No mugs.

Some people will break into your car to steal 27 cents in change.

And remember, logic doesn't enter into many thieves' minds. There are people who are mugged for their cellphone despite the phone being worthless as soon as its reported stolen, so stealing a Sirius out of a car (while stupid) wouldn't surprise me all that much.

Hi Folks,
So that Silver Accord was mine.. and yes it was the same one broken into on FRIDAY night! This time I had taken the faceplate off the radio and the only thing in the car was the Sirius radio which was mounted to the window. I assumed (stupidly, no flames please) that nobody would want that since it's tied to my account and I'd disable it...

I kinda feel like a target now though. Was thinking that I'm going to take the roof racks off so it's not as conspicuous. Right now it draws a lot of attention because of the racks which are a bit extreme looking.

let me catch these bastards...

They are being exposed to things that I don't need to see at my age.

I also wonder if stoop sitting stems from not having air conditioning. I find at night my house is much warmer than outside if I don't turn the A/C on...

What is the curfew btw?

I went to court to fight a ticket and there were several kids there that were busted for curfew violations. They were asked to write a 500 word essay about the experience. I don't know if that's an effective punishment.

I use this to get around that.

unfortunately i havent found one that gives me the ability to post threads though. Let me know if anyone does.

I love making this guys life a living hell. The funny thing is that I wouldnt if he would have let my reasonably sound constructive posts a long time ago stay without being erased. I just think the judgement this guy uses to validate good posts versus bad is complete irrational.

You should call the police and have them enforce the curfew.

It is a cultural thing but I don't see it as based upon race or nationality. It seems to be that some people no longer care about succeeding in the "mainstream" culture anymore. By mainstream I mean getting an education, holding down a steady job, being engaged in the community, etc.

It's sad to see small children outside late at night hanging out with their parents. Kids need their sleep and they are often being exposed to activities that they should not have to witness at their age.

More extra-curricular activities would probably help but that means the child must have parents involved and committed to their welfare and well-being who will make sure they attend etc. Sadly the parents of some of these kids just don't have a clue.

actually sully, regarding #2, i think there IS a curfew in this town... is it enforced? i don't think so. i think shootin' and stabbin' takes priority...

on our block - granted 99% are nice people, there are FREQUENTLY teens, kids, and TODDLERS on the stoops/streets up until (and after 3 am)....

i guess maybe it's a "cultural" thing. my white bread family had me do my homework and go to bed by dark...

Synergy can be had for about 399 a yr and the benches are in a seperate room at gold coast which is why someone might not have seen them.

Exactly. It not much different from what Synergy and the other one on Newark wanted to charge. One didn't even have a bench press and Synergy looked like some sort of fitness dunguen.

+1 for Xerxes. The gym is clean and the equipment is great. Best part is it's not as crowded at 6am like most fitness centers in NYC. The pool, however, average at best.

It probably means your IP address has been banned, as the site seems to but up and running. Try accessing it from a different internet connection than you normally use-- say at work rather than at home, or at home rather than at work. At this rate there are probably more banned JC residents than total users.

1. how did the author of the article know the teens were between the ages of 14 and 17?
2. what teenager is out on the streets at 6:30 in the morning, if the parents didn't impose cerfew on these kids then the parents should be held financially lible for the actions of their kids.
3. if they do find these little pricks they should shame them by chaining them to a street corner with sandwich boards on stating what their crime was.

could be kind of cool to bring back the stocks that were used a public punishment, put them right next to the grove street path station to ensure lots of publicity

Give the kids something to do, very simple.

My stepson is twelve and he's been asking for the past year if he can get a job and earn money. We keep telling him he's too young and if he helps around the house, we'll pay him. He said he'd rather add to our overall income (not those words exactly). There is cool stuff out there he wants to buy badly... video games, electronics, clothes, hats, shoes, etc. but wants to earn it himself.

Maybe if the legal working age was younger, kids would have something to do and earn some green while they're at it. Better than spending all of Saturday and Sunday playing video games.

I know this is a complicated issue, but maybe offering teens something of value to do could be part of the solution.

And the liberals say it is not their fault (the teens), it's society's fault, their parents....locking them up for 10 years is too harsh...it will ruin their life.

I say how about the lives of innocent people that these creeps are ruining. Lock those little bastards up. PERIOD!
