I noticed a sort of loud static/crackling sound every once and a while. Never heard it before. Also at times when switching channels the channel will be black for a minute or two but the sound will come through. (yes..delays, freezing)

Hudson-Bergen Light Rail to resume full weekday service for first time since Sandy

By Ron Zeitlinger/The Jersey Journal

updated November 11, 2012 at 4:16 PM

The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, will resume complete, regular weekday service tomorrow for the first time since Hurricane Sandy hit on Oct. 29, NJ Transit said on its website.

The light rail system, which runs from North Bergen to Bayonne in Hudson County, operated this weekend on its regular weekend schedule, with trains running every 20 minutes.

The complete HBLR system was running Friday morning when the Bayonne Eighth Street station reopened, said Nancy Snyder, an NJ Transit spokeswoman, but it was operating on a limited basis.

"We are very happy to have the system restored fully," Snyder said. "We had to replace switches, there was flooding and we had to make repairs, but the main issue was getting the power back to all the stations."

NJ Transit is still offering free parking at the agency?s Liberty State Park light rail station?s park-and-ride, free shuttle bus service to/from the nearby ferry docks and free ferry service to/from Battery Park.

NJ Transit is partnering with Statue Cruises to operate the service until further notice on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The free parking, busing and ferry service at HBLR?s Liberty State Park station?s park-and-ride is part of an emergency Trans-Hudson access plan.

Meanwhile, full service has not yet returned to the PATH system. Currently the trans-Hudson rail line is running only from Journal Square in Jersey City to the 33rd Street station from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, with no stops at Christopher Street and Ninth Street, according to the PATH website.

JC graffiti artist KAWS, one of his iconic characters is joining the ranks of Macy's Parade.

(I don't like that the guy was a JC ?tagger? but he is one interesting dude $$$. Also a sick looking balloon.)

Photography by Andrew Rowat
MAIDEN VOYAGE | The Macy's balloon version of Companion, one of Donnelly's recurring characters, photographed during a test flight in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Hired by the sort of luxury brands he once defaced, former graffiti artist KAWS found international fame as a painter and toy maker?and now one of his iconic characters is joining the ranks of Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

BRIAN DONNELLY, THE 37-YEAR-OLD PAINTER, designer and master collaborator who goes by the handle KAWS?a name he began tagging on walls, billboards and trains as a teenager in his hometown of Jersey City, New Jersey, because, he says, he liked how those letters looked together?has, for perhaps too long now, been tagged as a street artist. Donnelly certainly got his start that way. Long before he could sell a group of paintings for $315,000, as he did earlier this year at the Paris-based Galerie Perrotin's inaugural Asian show in Hong Kong, or float an enormous balloon of his own design in this month's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade?an honor previously bestowed on only four other living artists (Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami, Tom Otterness and Tim Burton)?Donnelly toiled in grittier territory. His work was no less public.

In the 1990s, he put his elaborate KAWS signature on roadside ads and across the lengths of Union Pacific freight cars. Beginning in '96, Donnelly would break into bus-stop and phone-booth poster cases, lift the ads?a glossy Calvin Klein underwear?clad Christy Turlington, for example?and take them back to his studio, where he would touch them up with Chromacolour paint, editorializing over the existing message with characters that quickly became recOgnizable on the street as his own. Donnelly's subversive approach had an insider's motive: "I wanted people to think what I did was part of the ad campaign," he said in a 2004 interview. "I painted with no brush strokes, clean and unobtrusive, as if it was part of the ad." Rather than being vilified, Donnelly was rewarded. Realizing that powerful creative direction could come from the street, major brands responded to Donnelly by commissioning more art. "In the beginning," says Donnelly, "I thought if a company came calling, it would be with a lawsuit."

Under the KAWS banner, Donnelly has designed an album cover for Kanye West and detailed a Porsche for Pharrell Williams, who admits to being a KAWS obsessive. ("I can't even count how many pieces I have," he says.) Other commissions have found Donnelly printing graphics on Comme des Gar?ons wallets and applying his signature touches to a limited-edition pair of Marc Jacobs flats. More recently, KAWS has earned acclaim as a contemporary painter, producing large-scale canvases that nod to the surrealistic style of the Chicago Imagists. Amping up the playfully saturated palette of animation, the work reimagines popular cartoon characters?the Simpsons, SpongeBob SquarePants?in a visual language that's become increasingly fragmented and abstract. Emmanuel Perrotin, Donnelly's gallerist (the latest KAWS exhibition opens at Galerie Perrotin, in Paris, on November 3) likens the artist to Andy Warhol for his prolific collaborations and to Takashi Murakami for his concern with sculpture of all sizes.

Located on the corner of Grand and Warren streets in the heart of Downtown Jersey City, St. Peter's Prep was just as affected by Hurricane Sandy as much of the area surrounding it.

However, despite flood damage that has closed several buildings on Prep's campus, the school had classes yesterday.

Troops at Jersey City Armory contracted stomach virus; city says Sandy evacuees not affected

By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal

updated November 08, 2012 at 4:58 PM

Nearly a dozen National Guard troops stationed at the Jersey City Armory contracted a stomach virus, but Jersey City officials say residents who were sheltered here during Hurricane Sandy should not fear they were infected.

The troops were kept in a separate population from the Sandy evacuees, and city health officials don?t believe there was ?any kind of exposure? to the evacuees, said city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill.

?To err on the side of caution, they have cleaned everything,? Morrill said.

But Emory Edwards, chief of Union City homeless shelter Palisades Emergency Residence Corporation, writes in a letter today to state Sen. Brian Stack that the Hudson Regional Health Commission told him there was a possibility some homeless evacuees sent to his shelter could have contracted the virus.

?I am extremely concerned about a potential public health crisis that was created, in addition to putting our other shelter residents and volunteers at risk,? Edwards writes.

But Morrill insisted that ?nobody who stayed at the shelter was affected.?

This is hearsay from the grape vine.. err..I mean gas line. I was in a 3 hour gas container line on Sunday at a station in Greenville. The guy in front of me worked for the post office. He said his work place in Kearny was under 4 feet of water and everyone that works there was told to report to Teterboro. As you know the Kearny meadows floods even with a moderate rain so I can only imagine how bad it was.

I did go to the USPS website and it seems to confirm that something is up with the Kearny location. I don?t know how much of JC mail hits it.

Some of you probably already know this I saw them cleaning out Edible Arrangements on Grand at Liberty Harbor today. I guess the Day Spa, Cleaners, and Restaurant are in the same boat??

Why would they design those places below street level? Looks cool old school JC but you would figure they would have water problems even with minor rain storms.

Speaking of Edwards I saw an apartment for rent sign on a row house next door to it. Wasn?t there before the storm maybe someone gave up??

I know this is a small inconvenience compared to what went down this past week but?..

Watch out where you park when Downtown. I parked along Grand Street and got a nice big metal IKEA thingamajig for a ..my guess.. IVAR ?assembly required? shelving system stuck right square in the middle of my tire. (couldn?t you have upgraded and gotten already put together furniture from maybe Raymour & Flanigan? Gee.) My low tire pressure alarm went a blaring in the middle of the hood. But not to worry being a JC old timer I have street ?cred? and was able to change it without getting killed. Or maybe it was because it was broad daylight. (no it was the street "cred" I am sure of it..word!) :)

My fault for parking along side someone?s basement (or apartment) clean out, sadly piled 5 feet high.

Good luck to all who lost their stuff. Going down Grand Street is really heart breaking. :(

Hudson Mall Closed Temporarily Due to Damage Sustained by Hurricane Sandy
Hudson Mall will be closed temporarily due to flooding caused by Hurricane Sandy. The mall has been closed since Monday, October 29, when the rising water from the Hackensack River reached an unprecedented level and flooded the entire Hudson Mall site along with other sites in the area. The flooding caused significant water damage to the mall as well as to all of its stores.
The overflow receded early Tuesday, and emergency clean-up efforts at the mall will commence today. However, because of extensive power outages in the Greater Jersey City area, it is anticipated that it may take many days before electricity is restored. This is expected to impede the mall?s ability to open.

It is expected to take at least two weeks before the mall will be in a condition to reopen, although it could take longer. Additionally, all of the mall?s 48 stores are commencing with their own clean-up efforts. The situation is being monitored on a continual basis, and daily updates will be featured here on the mall website.

N.J. senator pleaded for firm bailout
Updated 6/2/2010 11:32 PM
By Matt Kelley, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON ? During the depths of the financial crisis in 2008, a member of the Senate Banking Committee urged the Treasury Department to provide bailout money to a struggling financial firm whose eventual collapse cost taxpayers $2.3 billion, newly released records show.
Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., wrote to Henry Paulson, then secretary of the Treasury Department, in support of CIT Group, a New Jersey-based lender to businesses such as retail stores. Menendez touted CIT's importance to New Jersey and the nation and said the company "provided strong evidence" its finances were sound, according to a copy of the letter released last month under the Freedom of Information Act.

**

At the time, the financial crisis was near its peak, and the Treasury was deciding which institutions were healthy enough to justify investments of taxpayer dollars. Seven weeks after Menendez's letter, CIT announced the Treasury's $2.3 billion investment of taxpayer money under the Troubled Asset Relief Program. The Treasury's investment was wiped out in CIT's bankruptcy a year later.

**

Four months after the Treasury's investment, six CIT executives gave a total of $5,500 to Menendez's campaign, Federal Election Commission records show.

While people in Country Village (6 foot basement flooding) and Society Hill (cars flooded out) on either side of rt 440 were suffering CV much more so than SH. Along with the rest of JC. This a-hole was putting up campaign signs. THANK YOU!

Has anyone heard from Menendez in all of this???

Does anyone know what the deal is with the Pathmark near Society Hill?

The generators were on since Tuesday you could see the low level lighting is on. (soda/water refrigerators by cashiers are even on) The sign on the door says closed but there is a cop inside and it looks like a only few people on line buying stuff. Are they employees, cops, EMS, firemen? Getting food for seniors? I heard the people in SH are going to riot!

Where as the Twin City Supermarket and the Bayonne Stop & Shop are wide open.

Re: Snor'Eastercane
Home away from home
Home away from home

I have heard some info on Society Hill. The first floor units were told to evacuate before the storm. Some stayed but had agreements with upstairs neighbors to take them in if it got bad.

The tide from Newark Bay got to within 5 inches of the rear doors of the first floor units of SH I at the top of the high tide. It then receded quickly as high tide ended. (10:30 pm) For SH II and Doyers Point it was also close but did not get into any units.

Some cars did get water damage. The water in front of the units rose maybe 6 inches in the street to the curbs because the sewer drains that drain into Newark Bay could not. People moved their cars on to the higher front lawns and sidewalks to save them.

SH is about 10 ? 13 feet above sea level. The Newark Bay walkway was completely covered with maybe 5 feet of water. The NJCU athletic field was covered with around 4 - 5 feet of water. They had two tractor trailers full of equipment that went floating toward Newark Bay. They got stopped by the one foot of the 6 foot fence around the field that was not under water.
Power was lost at 3:00 pm Monday. A lot of trees are down, sadly some pretty nice mature evergreens. The buildings have some wind damage sliding blown off, etc. One 6 X 8 section of roof did blow off exposing the attic. A VW mini van some how caught fire and blew up in SH II. About 6 trees among the entrance to Doyers point are down cracked in half. Looks like some sort of gas spill at Westside and Danforth maybe the gas tanks of the near by gas station leaked??

A pole is down at the Getty station by National Warehouse draped over some parked trucks. There are 3 large poles down on Kellog Street next to Pathmark. It looks like they have the generators going in Pathmark don?t know if open yet.

Also heard that the houses that usually flood in Country Village have basements full of water.

Walking along Westside Ave toward JSq a lot of signs and awnings down.

Lincoln Park a lot of trees down.

"After coming through the hell our residents faced with this storm, that call was a nice ray of sunshine," Healy said.

President Obama said that Jersey City has always been a friend to him and that he would do all that he could to make sure that Jersey City and the people impacted by the storm would receive assistance
from federal agencies, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Read more.

Update 10/29: The Mayor's Action Bureau phone number has changed due to Hurricane Sandy havoc. Residents should now call (201) 547-5563.

Update 10/29, 4pm: The Municipal Court will be closed again tomorrow, Tues., 10/30.

Have some friends leaving West New York due to the ordered evacuation. They are heading for shelter here in JC with us. They want to park at Newport Mall, is it really flooded? Will they be able to still park there? Any chance they won't be able to drive over here in the next half hour?

Saw this in the am..Newport Mall is closed don?t know about parking. See the other thread about where to park and also when driving will be shut down in JC.

?If you were thinking about taking advantage of your day off from work by going to the Newport Centre mall, you can forget it.

Simon Property Group officials announced this morning that the mall in Downtown Jersey City, and others in the Northeast, will be closed today because of Hurricane Sandy. A spokesman for the malls said this morning that a decision on whether or not the malls will open tomorrow has not been announced.?
