They do carry regular products--I didn't mean to give the impression it stocked only "gourmet" or international foods, just that the store has a wide selection of those in addition to mainstream brands.

It's probably too late to try and get a hotel room at the beach now that the 4th is just over a week away. You'll probably have better luck (and cheaper prices) at a hotel further inland. You can also check Craigslist to see if anyone is renting out their condo/shore house for the weekend.

Not too shy to talk

I live in one of the condos on the left side of Harrison between JFK and West Side and while I did have someone break into my apartment that shit could have happened anywhere, even in the suburbs... particularly if you don't lock your windows like my dumbass.

I walk around at all hours of the night and I feel safe (I am a small white guy by the way). For the most part people are friendly and quiet...ish. The few people that I have seen who look like crackheads seem to be on there way somewhere else and the young kids I see hanging out seem more interested in getting laid than they are with trying to cause a problem. It is just like anywhere else if you look for a problem you will find it; if you just mind your own business you will be fine.

Besides which, in about five years I can only imagine what the houses or condos are going to be selling for, particularly with its proximity to Lincoln Park (which is huge) and Journal Square... as well as the ability to get out of JC on 1&9 with very little traffic.

Heights, you speak as if immigrants only take and have nothing to offer, nothing in the way of needed skills or talent. What if Einstein had never emigrated to the U.S.? What of all the brilliant minds and artists who have come here? The diversity is what makes this country so unique and amazing, despite all its faults. Yes, it would be great if a lot of basket-case countries fixed their problems so that their citizens didn't feel compelled to flee (they, too, suffer from a labor and brain drain - the Philippines, for example, suffer from a shortage of qualified nurses). Do you think people find it easy to uproot themselves from family and all that is familiar and come here because there's some great "giveaway" in the U.S.? They do so out of economic necessity (or desperation), because they can do some job Americans can't or won't do, whether it's laying bricks, caring for our sick or programming code. Do you think technological innovation and cutting-edge research at this country's universities is being done only by those born in this country? It's because the best minds in the world still want to come here that the U.S. still manages to stay ahead.

You speak as if your origins are firmly rooted here. Are you a Native American? Yes, the economy is bad and jobs are being lost, but it would be wrong to blame a particular group of people. Hitler tried that in the 30s. Lou Dobbs is trying it now. Wedge politics is always popular because it puts a face to your misfortunes and doesn't require you to think.

Not quite true:
Lefrak was GIVEN the land, scot free by Jersey City and was also given a GRANT by Jersey City for $40 Million in Federal Money to use any way JC deemed fit. THe word "BOUGHT" never entered the Lefrak equation.

In fact, back in the real estate slump of the early 1990's when it was revealed that Lefrak wasn't making it's "in-lieu of tax" payments to the city and was essentially in default, Lefrak took a full page in the Jersey Journal telling investors not to worry because "not one penny of Lefrak money was tied up in Newport."

Lefrak got a GOOD deal when they accepted 600 acres of prime real estate a mile from Manhattan gratis.

Well we (the U.S.) must be doing something right if everyone from other countries is coming here in droves. I wonder if the U.S. is keeping up on medical exams during the immigration process as they did in the early part of the 20th century. Most come here for permanent vacations or work visas. Sustaining the welfare and nourishment of growing populations is something of necessity. Allowing an influx of people who need to be trained in the language, medically cared for, and fed could cause drastic set backs for a country to maintain itself in the long run. If you look at world news the countries that immigrants are coming from is in disarray wouldn't it be better for their native homeland to stay and remedy the situation and build for a more prosperous competitive global economy that you speak of ?

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Carlin, briefly, at a Comic Relief event about a dozen or so years ago. He was a real class act, extremely gracious to the crew and even to the star-struck PA who inadvertently interrupted his rehearsal in a rush to say hello.

I suppose it's too late to apologize for that.

Sigh. A damn fine fella.

The NJ State SPCA enabled these people to operate this way. Make no mistake, the NJ State SPCA knew that this place was bad news for many years, but an inspector pencil-whipped inspections in January (eyewitnesses). The volunteers' complaints fell on deaf ears until a lawyer was hired to force the State to do something. Shame on the NJ State SPCA!

The NJ State SPCA will show up now because the land is pretty valuable.

Volunteers contacted all of the local television news media last winter and they didn't want to follow up. Friggin jackels! They waited until animals were rotting in a ransacked facility.

Finally, these people are out of the animal business... Board Members are next.

Well then it's best for them to stick to writing, at least it will be easier for others to decipher what you're parents are trying to convey. I can't see the benefit in giving away American jobs to those that were not born in the United States over it's native born citizens. I'm not sure what's stranger -- Ygor's creepy photo above or the huge painting of the David Bowie-esque waitress that Sava Polish Deli has hanging in its dining room (first mentioned on JCList by Noepants back on 2/15/08). Relive the magic below for yourself. Makes me giggle and cringe simultaneously on the inside each and every time I see it. Bring on the fabulous kitsch -- that place is THE BEST!

If the IT company my wife works for is representative of the industry as a whole, it makes sense that a lot of Indians would lose their jobs as they occupy most of them.

I also heard from some CEO on CNBC that the main reason IT companies hire foreigners, is because there aren't enough Americans with the right skill set. He might have also mentioned the movie Idiocracy...

Re: Savas - Polish Cafeteria Opens on Grove Street

I just ate at Sava Polish Deli again tonight -- it's always SO GOOD! I heartily recommend the following...

- Kielbasa and Sauerkraut

- Pierogies (the Potato or the oh-so-awesome Cabbage-Filled)

- Stuffed Mushrooms

- Cucumber Salad With Onions, Sour Cream and Dill

- Poppyseed Roll and the scrumptious Poppyseed-Almond Cake (I know she often gets it delivered from Krystina Bakery out in Garfield or elsewhere, but it's still darn good.)

- Stuffed Cabbage (Sava's is not as good as my mom's, but my mom's recipe is hard to beat. Still, Sava's makes me happy.)

The owner, Jadwiga, is always so sweet and doting -- it's really heartwarming. And I've never been called "luvie" so many times in my life. She's one of a kind. Much of this has been said about Sava Polish Deli before, but it's definitely worth repeating.

Here's a link to her website for the uninitiated: http://www.savapolishdeli.com. It was created for Jadwiga by a fellow JCLister if I recall correctly. Enjoy!

I'm interested in getting some new music going in jc. I'm a singer and would be interested in any various combinations of instruments. With new music of course there are many pieces written for odd combos. I would definitely be interested in pianists and string quartets but anyone who has the interest in and chops for new music would be great - including guitar. Thanks.

The morning PATH trains are not crowded because of a few dozen people in a Newark building. They are crowded because everyone who takes NJ Transit from the 'burbs to downtown or to the JC waterfront and has a Newark stop gets off there and takes PATH.

You contradict yourself when you both say that PATH is doing nothing and then mention what they are doing (also, Grove and Exchange Place platforms have been lengthened already). PATH ridership actually peaked in 2000 and the easy way out for them would have been to point to this or bs about 9/11 costs and not do the planning and capital expenditures that they are doing, to their credit.

Anywho, I don't understand paying $1,600++ to live in Newark but it's great that they are seeing some development.

Too bad PATH isn't doing anything about it. It just keeps getting worse and worse.

Their 'expansion plan' of longer cars (requiring longer station platforms) won't be completed for years.

If they ever start, that is .
