One of my neighbors had these in front of his house on Coles Street. He threw a fit and the city removed them. They were shaking his house.

So are the officials saying that slowing traffic down is a problem? I thought that is what we were trying to do.

This is a question for the reporter who wrote that paragraph, I just GP'ed the story.

I have the same question: Why Jersey Avenue? Jersey Avenue needs "No Trucking" signs, not noise strips.
Eighth Street and Ninth Street. Now those two streets NEED noise strips.

In another attempt to solve several problems at once. We should put all the kids in white tee shirts into BJ's shopping carts and push them into the intersection of Marin and 9th Street.

Sweet! I think I'll go this weekend to buy my first XXL white T-shirt! It's about time I start dressing more fashionably...

Instead of posting where you see the carts on here, which will accomplish nothing, why don't you call BJ's to collect them?

There's a BJ's cart in front of a checkout aisle in the ShopRite next door. It's loaded with books with an SR sign on it advertising their bargain book sale. It never made it out of the parking lot, but BJ's just gets no respect.

Umm isn't it supposed to be a distraction, ahem, an alert, to make drivers more aware of an approaching intersection.

I wonder if the DPW did any studies before putting these noise strips in place. I don't recall anyone standing around and clocking speeders on Jersey Ave. I don't even recall any equipment set up for such. Or even a radar that reports your speed as you drive by.

There haven't been any police pulling over speeders as far as I know.

So my question is, just why did they put these in?

I have had Paul do my hair for years. I think that their prices are reasonable for a good hair dresser. You get what you pay for. Most of the products in SalonX are top of the line Italian, and Paul is a great hair dresser. Welcome to the Neighborhood.............

Wow. Look at Jersey Ave now. Just a few days after our posts and now there are rumble strips on both sides of the street. I bet they are going to say that they just needed to finish the job.

Anyhow, we have 6 of them on our block (3 on either side). It is the most annoying sound ever as cars are still speeding over them and not even considering slowing down.

I think the HCA and Fulop will be getting calls and emails over these.

Have these strips been put in any other section of Downtown, or just on Jersey Ave?

Re: 9th & Marin crosswalk
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

I feel for the OP who got beat up - I've been yelled at and given the finger plenty of times at that intersection, I know how aggressive those drivers can get.

The corner of 9th and Manila (grove st) is equally dangerous yes, I've had cars accelerate in front of me so they don't have to wait for me to cross (while I'm already in the crosswalk)

I think if you are going to make a second entrance to the mall parking lot you should also have a stop light there to make it safe for pedestrians to cross the street. The crossing guards there are as useful as those yellow plastic men they replace them with sometimes (but I'm sure not as cheap)

BD - when you're running late for work that extra block plus the walk around the mall to get to where you would've originally ended up by going in thru the 9th st entrance add precious minutes people just don't have.

I really hope they put more police presence in that whole area, if not for the safety of us pedestrians, to make a killing ticketing those reckless drivers who have no regard for traffic laws.

Two sides in dispute over arts district building's future

Jersey Journal

Is the Morgan Building in Downtown Jersey City really in danger of collapse?

Jersey City Municipal Court Chief Judge Nesle Rodriguez will take up that question in three weeks, as the city and the building's owner clash over differing engineers' reports.

Martin Dolan, a city attorney, told Rodriguez this morning that the 103-year-old warehouse - the city's desired location for a PATH train power station that has to be moved out of the Powerhouse building on Washington Street - is at "no imminent hazard of collapse."

However, an engineer hired by the city yesterday noted "some movement in the building" that should be addressed by its owner, developer Bob Lehrer, Dolan said. The building is in the city's Powerhouse Arts District.

Lehrer says an engineer he hired found serious structural flaws requiring the building to be demolished immediately.

The judge ordered the two sides to exchange reports and appear before on Aug. 13 at 9 a.m.

Developer, city at odds over 'ready to collapse' warehouse

Thursday, July 24, 2008
By PAUL KOEPP
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Before the Powerhouse building on Washington Street can be remade into the jewel of Jersey City's new Downtown arts district, it will have to shed the humming transformers that it houses - they power the PATH trains.

That means moving them elsewhere, but the owner of the city's preferred destination is not welcoming them with open arms.

Developer Bob Lehrer, principal owner of the 1905 Butler Brothers warehouse at 350 Warren St., asked the city July 2 for immediate approval to demolish his building, saying its entire front wall had shifted toward Morgan Street by as much as 7 inches.

He says Allied Engineering, of Franklin Lakes, found the warehouse, also known as the Morgan Building, to be in danger of imminent collapse, although he declined to share the report with The Jersey Journal.

In a written response, city Construction Official Ray Meyer said he found Lehrer's "logic and explanation to be quite alarming" because he did not include the engineer's report or a plan to stabilize the building before demolition.

Yesterday, unicipal Court Judge Nesle Rodriguez said the city should inspect the building immediately and report back to her today, calling cracks in the structure a "serious situation."

Lehrer said he expects the city to "do the right thing."

But city officials questioned the timing and seriousness of the alleged structural problems.

"For the last two to three years, as Mr. Lehrer has formally or informally communicated with the city in regards to that property, he has never once indicated in the slightest that it was suffering from structural duress," said Jersey City Corporation Counsel Bill Matsikoudis.

He said Lehrer only raised the issue when he encountered resistance to his plans to erect a residential tower in the middle of the building, which the city is trying to have registered as an historic site.

Lehrer is also suing the city in an effort to force the Planning Board to act on his application, filed 17 months ago, to convert the warehouse into condominiums with a maximum building height of 550 feet.

That would mirror changes on surrounding parcels of the Powerhouse Arts District.

Matsikoudis said the city has not considered Lehrer's request because the developer did not pay a required $10,000 fee, and added that even if the fee is paid, the application would not necessarily be approved.

In the meantime, the Port Authority has hired an engineering firm to look at other potential sites for the substation between Washington and Grove streets, including a previously considered triangular piece of land just north of the Powerhouse building, said Jersey City Redevelopment Agency Executive Director Bob Antonicello.

Journal staff writer Lisa Zimmerman contributed to this story.

Just can't stay away

Regarding Ian's comment about Ipods and street crossing. I have seen MANY people in NYC almost get hit by cars because they are wearing ipods and not paying attention. I would be pretty pissed off/upset/freaked out if I was driving and I hit someone who was completely unaware of their own surroundings.

On another note, I must admit that I cannot stand dealing with people wearing ipods and not being aware of someone saying pardon me, excuse me, etc etc.

That's like the New York state legislators that tried making it illegal to listen to an ipod while crossing the street because a cab driver killed a pedestrian while making an illegal turn. Pedestrian behavior should not be altered because drivers are breaking the law.

Marin Blvd crossings are absurd. I cross frequently at Second and Marin, which a lot of people do because there is a light rail stop at Second Street. Drivers frequently do not stop, though at least at this intersection the south side is one lane in each direction rather than two. However, while some people might think it makes sense to insist pedestrians "just walk a block" to the traffic light at either first street or at Metro Plaza, in reality, the pedestrian ends up walking two blocks, once up, once back (uphill both ways!). It takes 12 seconds to cross the street. Walking up a block and back adds a tremendous amount of time. Cars can stop, not just because its easier, but because its the law.
