Re: Bike Share System
Home away from home
Home away from home

Is it just me or doesn't this seem a little cart before the bike-ish? Bike lanes are still a major work in progress, putting it politely. The bike "culture", such as it is, is very inhospitable - both from a car perspective as well as cyclist's. Seems like it has actually gotten worse in the past few years - noticing a lot more riding on sidewalks, wrong side of street, wrong way on a one-way. If I had to guess, I'd say at least 2/3 of the people I see riding don't wear helmets. I wonder if we are going to see a significant uptick in serious cycling injuries with the onset of CitiBiking?

Re: JC councilman charged with drunken driving after three-car collision

"Councilman Ramchal is entitled to his day in court, but the mayor has made clear to the councilman that his actions remain an unnecessary distraction to the city," city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said.

The development represents a stunning turnaround for Ramchal, a Democrat who was first elected to the City Council in June 2013 and has been praised for bringing a level of constituent services to Ward B that residents there say they hadn't seen in years. A political mentee of Freeholder Bill O'Dea and an ally of Mayor Steve Fulop, Ramchal had been forging political allegiances with allies of Fulop and of former Mayor Jerramiah Healy, and he had been hoping to run for mayor.

Okay - 1. A trained chimpanzee is more qualified than Chico to be mayor. It's actually insulting to the chimpanzee to be put in a comparison with Chico. Sorry, chimpanzees.

2. "his actions remain an unnecessary distraction to the city. What kind of bullshit is that? A distraction? From what, first of all? And how about a statement condemning his actions, other than to moan about it being a "distraction." I know that's very favorable in sports right now, to call someone's wife beating, drug use, assault, etc. a "distraction." Would be great to see some leadership, just once and call something what it really is - a disgrace.

Fulop was far from neutral in the JC BOE election. It isn't in his nature to not meddle - he can't help himself. His minions were working for the union ticket.

Nothing is sacred to him.

Perhaps you didn't read the article, Capn. Sure - life gets in the way and all and things change (although we are talking about someone who is remarkably focused and seventeen-tasks with the best of them...)

I think this quote and article lend a little more weight to the notion he created the expectation he was moving to B/L:

Besides, Fulop added, he intends to live in Ward F. A longtime Downtown resident, Fulop has sold his Paulus Hook walkup and seeks to buy a home in Bergen-Lafayette.

?It?s a strong signal, is really what I think,? he said. ?I want to have a commitment to the area beyond just saying it.?

I believe the mayor never said he was moving to Bergen-Lafayette; he did say, however, he was moving to Ward F. Parts of downtown are now in Ward F.

A sentence from midway through the article linked below:

And the mayor himself is looking for a residence in Bergen-Lafayette.

Definitely hire a good architect. In order for any contractor to pull permits for a job like this, the city will require you to provide signed and sealed drawings from a licensed Architect. The condo board may even require it as well. In addition to providing you with all the required documentation to get the project built, they'll also analyze the zoning and building code issues involved at the very beginning to help you assess whether or not the project is even really feasible.

While a lawyer is critically important for ironing out all the legal issues involved with a project like this, they really aren't versed in the building code issues or interpreting the zoning ordinance into a workable design.

Or just call Tom Bertoli. He can handle all of your issues with permitting in no time. He's not cheap though.

If this campaign brings in 10,000 new residents, let's say 2,000 will be children which means we need new schools, teachers, and parks. Perhaps, there will be 3,000 cars on our streets and 8,000 people taking the PATH. JC is 14 square miles, Newark is 24 square miles. There is a reason they are the largest city, they have more land. There is no purpose of bringing over more people unless we can accommodate them, especially when it comes to building new schools and hiring more teachers. New structures will be tax abated leaving the burden of new schools on regular taxpayers.

In 1930, when you were in high school Yvonne, Jersey City had 316,715 people - about 60,000 more than now. Even in 1960, when people were much more dependent on the car than in 1930 (and probably as much as today) there were 276,000 people - 20,000 more than now. So - What. Is. Your. Point? It's like you wake up every morning and try to figure out new ways to show anyone who will listen just how dense you are.

You speculated that 8,000 adults would move in and every single one of them would take the PATH. At the same time they are (presumably) in the city, their 3,000 cars will be roaming the streets of JC unmanned.

And while every single adult who moves here will be taking the PATH,not one of them will be staying home to raise their 2,000 children. Not one. (Fortunately, the number of school aged kids that would come along with 8,000 adults moving into new rental bldgs. oriented to commuting into the city would be less than 500, probably way less, many studies have shown.

Younger people aren't as (and don't want to be to nearly the same extent) dependent on cars. This is widely documented in press that doesn't rely on parchment paper for distribution.

I'm a person who pays in to support cops, firemen, teachers, not a person on the taxpayer dime.

Nothing creepy about it, officer. Pretending to be something you aren't is a little bit, though. Equally weird that a JC cop who lives in the suburbs has nothing better to do than post on an out of town message board ten times a day. No one is listening, dude. Grab a beer and watch some football. Or go arrest some kids making out in a car or something. Whatever it is that gets you off - but this here is just sad.

Yup, a coward with skin in the game you lack. That's me! :)

And Monroe - you are a JC cop who lives in the suburbs with a political ax to grind and who clearly has too much time on his hands, given the amount of time that you post at all hours of the day. The casino is never going to happen. The bridge is being built to make the land behind the hospital more attractive to developers. Tens of millions of dollars of infrastructure and remediation needs to be done back there. Getting the bridge in place (with the state paying for it) is an incentive on the part of the city.
