Re: Grand Marshal Nidia Lopez ???? of Jersey City or Orlando

Home away from home

I'd like to know if there is reciprocity.....As a Jersey City resident I think I might be interested in running for a position in Orlando city government. Maybe Ms Lopez and I could work out a job sharing arrangement. She could do my job in Orlando while I would do her job here in JC.

I share CommanderKeen's feelings and choose not to lie or even explain away why I live in Jersey City. It's my choice. Any person that judges me for this reason is not "judging me on the content of my character." - (Martin Luther King)

You may be happy or miserable anywhere. Please read Victor Frankl's book Man's Search For Meaning and consider the theory of Logotherapy. Frankl was a prisoner of concentration camps during WWII, and found a happiness in the meaning of surviving horrific conditions. As someone that was a Navy corpsman in Bosnia, I've seen some things that would give many nightmares....At the same time I was somewhat happy in serving others...I do not mean to say that starving in some foreign land would be pleasant, but no matter how much you dislike JC its really not as bad as that situation.

Ah yes.... should one bear the slings and arrows of a possible pouring misfortune? To go or not to go that is the question? ( I heard it was FREE and HAD SWORD FIGHTS! I'm so there.)

1. Any one that judges you solely on where you live is at best ignorant and at worst a bigot.
2. You can be happy anywhere or miserable anywhere. It's really your personal choice.
3. The only way I've changed since I moved from Manhattan is that now I've got a few more dollars in my pocket. (I'll take the cash over "status" any day)
4. Thankfully if you don't like a place you may simply go away.

Just a thought....would it be cost effective to renovate as offices and put the port authority in there. Take the facility over on twelth st and the empty warehouse across the street and turn the whole thing into a ball park or mixed use venue? Just spitballing.

Maybe I'm in the minority but for me walking through the garage isn't so bad....Today walking through the air conditioned mall was kind of nice. What specific cost effective improvements could be made at this point?

Re: Downtown Jersey City List -> Jersey City List

Brewster I think you are correct....It is obvious they designed it to impinge on the then poor HP residents getting easy access to the mall.
Probably felt some separation from their gentrified area would keep values high on their real estate products. Also isolating their developed area would allow them control over issues such as traffic patterns and future development.
The planned by product of such a "wall" would be to retard gentrification on proximate areas so that these areas would not dilute the value of the developers inventory.
It seems the area was originally marketed as a SELF CONTAINED town village development. It doesn't seem as if much consideration was given to HP residents or the future growth of the HP area including traffic patterns.
This is the danger of acquiescing to a developers vision without comprehensively studying long term effects. It looks like the city benefited from a large development but could it have better planned? What do you long term residents think?

another thread was started saying Leona B resigned....maybe I should convince these other guys to resign as well because they have little to gain as well....ok here goes....to all those arrested: right now you are under a microscope and will be hard pressed to continue with your wanton ways. Let the smoke blow over, move to another community (take a page from Jack Shaw's book) and start again in the future.

Re: Jack Shaw found dead!

Under the circumstances much uncertainty about his manner of death. Although it seems Mr. Shaw had his share of problems, others might have had motivation to kill him. I don't see why an official cause of death has not been forthcoming. Again I'm curious....is there any type of investigation going on? I do not presume that there should or should not be an investigation. I'm just asking the question.

I'm not judging anything just asking a question. If the position is one of title alone with no power I didn't understand why she wouldn't just give it up. If I understand you correctly, you are saying that perhaps her motivation is spite....that might make sense. If the position is one of title alone with no power why does it need to exist? Please forgive me since I'm a neophyte in the ways of Jersey City politics but it is my home now and I'm just trying to get educated.

Have any definative conclusions about Jack Shaw's death been reach yet. It seems any tests should have been completed by now. Is this an open case under investigation?

I suppose the question has to be asked. Why would Leona Beldini be motivated, under the circumstances to continue serving in a position with no pay or benefits?

Tonight was the first night and I live close so I took a walk over. My first time but about what I expected. Half dozen local food places represented like Hamilton Park Pizza, White Star, Made w/ Love, Taste of NY Catering and a few others I can't remember. Some carnival games. Three blow up bounce around type things. Some vendors selling the usual street fair stuff. A wine bar (Camposino Wines I think) and full bar. Of course the lottery wheel and 50/50. I had a couple of the "famous" rice balls that I guess the ladies in the church sell for $2 each. Two filled me up and they were quite tasty. Seems like parking might be difficult if you are driving.

Re: ShopRite - the place where you feel safe!

Just because Shoprite's business is good doesn't mean that it can't be better. That sort of arrogance leads to an eventual loss of business and a myriad of other problems. I'm sure competitors have probably look at all the business you folks are doing. Good business people recognize when they can simply take anothers business. The day will come.

My car was damaged at Shoprite while shopping at Shoprite. Their towing practices are unethical at the very least.

You don't seem very impartial about your evaluation of Shoprite in my opinion.

As regards your attack on my business acumen. I'm a graduate of Babson College, one of the best business schools in the country. I've worked as the general manager of a 125,000 square foot supermarket and presently own my own business. You are entitled to your opinion but please do not personally attack me just because you disagree with an opinion of mine.

Just because people tolerate Shoprite today doesn't mean they will forever. They have lost me (and my family of 5)as a customer and you don't have to be a business genius or an economics expert to realize that losing customers is not in the best interest of a business.

Thank you for strengthening my resolve to boycott this Shoprite until they acknowledge and try to fix their abundance of severe problems.

Did I read this correctly?

They seem to be getting a 2% "longevity" increase which by defination I think in most businesses is not considered a wage freeze. This city continues to amaze me.

Been bashing Shoprite.
In the interest of full disclosure I should state that I was a manager of Publix supermarkets for 11 years. I have a level 3 food safety certification, which required me to study a 400+ page textbook, take 58 hrs of classroom instruction and pass a three hour exam.
I've made many mistakes as a manager so I'm not perfect but there are some things that would be very clear to any average supermarket manager.
Clearly change needs to happen at Shoprite. Clearly the place is a cash cow so its upper level management is not motivated to change.
I really want Shoprite here near me to succeed. The first step needs for them to publicly acknowledge the problems that are obvious.

Most stores that have sushi have distinct employees that they hire or have an outside company come in for that service. Probably one of the cleanest areas in the entire store. Enjoy your sushi if you can safely get it through the front registers & past the parade of "characters" near the front door. Hopefully if you drove there your car wasn't towed or damaged.

I wish that someday Shoprite would be a little clean {their meat and fish dept as of 6 weeks ago was disgusting} and almost moderately safe. I hope the employees and customers might some day be something remotely close to cordial. Having a barely acceptable supermarket close to my apartment would make my life more convenient.
Until that day I won't shop there because:
1.) I don't believe they will be motivated to change until it affects their income.
2.) I don't need extra drama or aggravation in my life.
3.) A&P, Stop & Shop, other Shoprites, Traders Joes & Whole Foods are all viable options for me.
4.) I am afraid that eating their refrigerated food would put me at a greater risk of getting sick.

I like A&P for the sale items which are priced like shoprite. You are right about everyday prices being high on things like meat & dairy. The coffee and food bar are nice and convenient for me. I'm curious why they don't lower prices more. Seems like they could take business from shoprite, but you are right they are trying to cater more to the yuppie crowd from Hoboken.

Re: ShopRite - the place where you feel safe!

As a resident of 7th street I used to go to shoprite often because its location is convenient. After many unpleasant shopping experiences {the nature of the problems is no secret to anyone} I've decide to have my own private boycott of shoprite. Their prices are good but to me the negative experience is not worth the hassle. Why does this poison culture exist and why doesn't management look to change it? {Especially if it does not exist at some of the companies other stores.}
The answer is simple....Money!!!
They are busy as hell. They don't need to be polite or clean or safe. Everyone can complain all they want but at the end of the day the only way to effectively advocate change is to simply not shop here. If the business income was to significantly decline 20% I assure you change would come and come fast.
