Re: New PATH Flat Screens

I think the real complaint with the monitors in the PATH system is that they are more or less useless. Sometimes they tell you when the next train is coming, approximately, but this information is interspersed through so many ads that the next train usually arrives before the announcement of the next train is displayed, rendering the information irrelevant. I think the whole system would be far more effective if the next train information was displayed on a continuous scroll bar, at least then I might look at the screen's ads every once and a while.

Any idea if the flatscreens will soon display the same video content we're supposed to be seeing on the new trains?

(I haven't had a chance to ride in one of the new cars, so I don't know if the video screens in them are functional yet.)

I was in the same car... didn't see anything more than you did, aside from the fact that the guy who initially asked him to be quiet was not the same person as the guy who brought up the box cutter.

No idea how it ended.. I too went out the other exit at Grove and they were still yelling at each other then.

Weird night.

I got to see her perform back in September at a free riverside concert in Poughkeepsie. We just sort of stumbled across it while in town, and felt really lucky to see such an incredible show -- and now I feel doubly lucky. Odetta had such a powerful voice. It was still strong even those few weeks ago.

But that won't get you through the fare gates for the airtrain, and if I recall correctly there are no machines to buy a ticket on that side... and that's an extra $5 anyway...

I've done this in the middle of the night when there were no NJT trains to EWR (had like a 5 am flight) and it was just me and the airport employees -- and zero traffic. It was an easy, quick ride. Probably the cheapest way to get there, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it during the holiday rush.

That's a crime right there !

If I lived there I would want the maintenance costs itemized.

That includes all utilities (I only pay cable, phone and internet separately) and property taxes as well.

No, i am talking about the normal 1br that's 600ish sqft.

The monstrosity you are talking about actually is the only unit that went for a pretty reasonable price, actually lower than the normal 1br if i remember right. For someone who got the time to split it back into 2 studios, it's an ok deal.

I stand corrected! That's ridiculous. I really like living here, but those prices seem way too high for a seized property auction.

I assume you're referring to the one that was actually two units combined into one -- it's on a high floor and over 1000 sq. feet, so it's not your standard 1br. I didn't check it out, but something like that has the potential to be a really interesting space. 290k seems quite reasonable for that unit, particularly if it has been renovated, even more so if it has the harbor view. (I live in one of the end units in the same building, and it's like having a postcard out the window.)

The rest, though... really don't sound like bargains. A bit surprising, considering the current state of the housing market...

Ugh, yikes. You've made me very glad I didn't do anything for Halloween this year! I'm surprised there were no announcements, though -- of all the elements in that situation it's the one they're usually a bit better about. But expanded service for a holiday? HA.

Yeah, the JC hipsters seem generally friendlier, like they're actually trying to be part of the neighborhood instead of take it over. Williamsburg feels like a retirement community to me, except it's the young sectioning themselves off from everyone else.

Full disclosure: I am a glasses-wearing graphic designer who does indeed live near the Grove St. PATH. (Fact: I don't know a single professional artist who *doesn't* wear glasses. Staring at your work all day tends to lead to eye strain.) I really don't think of myself as a hipster at all though; I'm far too far toward the "actual geek" and "9-to-5 job" ends of the spectrum for that. I really like the neighborhood, I shop and dine local, and I support stuff like the Loews. I'd be really sad if people thought I was bad for JC.

At least that's a sign they'll be running for real soon... and I'd rather them be very fully tested first!

Really seems like they've stopped maintaining the old cars entirely while waiting for these to show up, though.

I know that the reason these buildings had financial trouble in the past has been resolved, but I can't tell you anything about the coop finances beyond that. The rentals are owned by two other companies, as well as individual shareholders.

With the housing market what it is, I can't imagine a studio seized by the IRS going for 220k... a lot of potential bidders won't even be able to secure funding, and you lose your deposit if you can't do so within a couple months. Not many people now willing to risk that on 500sf.

There are definitely bugs. I find that as long as I keep my kitchen clean they aren't too huge a problem, though. (Possibly because I'm on a pretty high floor?)

Another thing to note is that the "house rules" are pretty strict -- you can't paint your place any color that isn't white, if you want window treatments you have to have white blinds behind them etc. There's a PDF of them at the link above.

The best thing about the building is the size of the apartments. You get a huge amount of space for the price.

Nine units in Metropolis Towers up for IRS auction Nov. 13

http://www.ustreas.gov/auctions/treasury/rp/marinblvd.shtml

"9 co-op units in Metropolis Towers will be auctioned individually. The units range in size from a 500 ? sq. ft. studio unit with 1 bath to a 1,015 ? sq. ft. 1 bedroom, 1 bath unit. All units have a kitchen and living area. A few units have a balcony."

I rent here, and I (gasp!) actually like it -- much nicer inside than out. Anyone know the story behind these seized units? Could be a real bargain...

Has anyone else swiped their card, had the turnstile tell them to enter, then walked smack into the bars because the lock hadn't disengaged yet?

Happened to me last night. Ow. I have a really nasty bruise across my legs now (and it was a bit of a scary experience, as I currently have a swollen spleen and an impact of that nature could rupture it...).

Re: The Junction Area..White Girl wants to buy.. everyone says I am crazy

I've been living in Metropolis Towers for nearly three years, but I rent. The financial setup for owners is really confusing. As I understand it the major cause for the initial decline was that the co-op arrangement didn't include a clause that forced people to pay maintenance fees, so people stopped paying them and they ran out of cash.

There are now TWO management companies running the buildings, ALMA and Metrovest. My apartment got sold from the latter to the former, but the only thing that changed is where I mail my rent check.

I like it here. Sure, there's an occasional bug and the building's exterior is outrageously ugly, but the rentals were nicely renovated a few years ago (they're nicer than the co-ops, from what I understand), I have a huge amount of space and a harbor view. And you can't beat the location.

Still funny to me: The Gregory on Henderson Street = Metropolis Towers on Marin Blvd.

I actually like the JC library system a lot -- I'll often try to get a book from the NYC libraries, only to find that all eighteen copies are checked out or missing or in Coney Island... the JC system may only have two copies, but they're both available and an easy walk from my apartment.

The movie theatre at Newport, though.... *shudder*

Photography IS permitted on the NYC Subway -- even filming, as long as you don't have a tripod. The PATH, on the other hand, is another story -- I've seen tourists yelled at for taking a picture of their baby's first train ride.

I really like Dr. Chinai as well, but he's only there two days a week -- it can be a bit hard to see him right away, particularly if your insurance only allows you to go to one doctor.

Dr. Mirza (corner of Jersey and Wayne) runs a walk-in office with pretty long hours. I went there once when I couldn't get in to see Chinai... definitely not the shiniest office, but I got the antibiotics I needed and he only charged me $50 for the visit (which my insurance didn't cover).

Re: Newsweek list of best public high schools in the country
Home away from home
Home away from home

Brewster, I think you're correct. The methodology they use to compile this list makes a lot of schools look far more impressive than they are. I don't know the JC schools that well, as I didn't grow up here, but I am familiar with several of the top-ranked schools from another state -- trust me, they're definitely not encouraging "average students" to achieve any more than the schools Newsweek excluded for too-high SAT scores. They're simply part test-in magnet program (with lots of access to high-level and specialized courses, and almost 100% white students), part regular neighborhood high school (with virtually no access to APs or interesting electives, and almost 100% minority students). And the two halves barely mix at all -- I used to date a guy who went to one of them, and his school (which made the top 20) didn't even allow the "traditional" students to *enter the building* where the magnet program was housed. On paper, though, it averages out, and looks like a diverse place where everyone, regardless of background, has the chance to excel. This is a blatant lie, and proclaiming schools like this to be some of the best in the country does the students on both sides of the divide a real disservice.

For the record, AP doesn't necessarily equal quality either. All we did in my AP classes was memorize lists of facts and fill out packet after packet of test prep questions. I got to college with credit for eight courses from AP tests, yet had never once had a class discussion or writing assignment longer than one page.

Good teaching is certainly not easy to quantify, but judging a school by its test scores doesn't begin to give you anything close to the big picture.

One of the cooler re-uses for an old church that I've stumbled across is this one in the Netherlands:

http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007/12/church_converte.php

Turning a church into a bookshop (or library) seems quite appropriate -- it's a quiet, peaceful use for a space designed to be so. I'd love to curl up on a sofa and read under a big stained-glass window.
