Re: Crowd outraged at NJ Transit plan for half-dozen glass skyscrapers dwarfing Hoboken and even J.C.

Yes! God forbid they develop the barron wasteland that segregates hoboken from jersey city. I hope we never see have to see roads, buildings and parks where we could keep train tracks and walls instead.

People are really annoying sometimes.

yes, bedford, and since you mentioned it before smith st in bk are both very succesful one-way retail streets which proves that not having two ways of traffic wont suffocate the businesses. I think wider sidewalks and parking on both sides of the street (instead of an ugly space-wasting parking lot) will actually improve the look and effeciency of the street.

Re: Newark Avenue Redevelopment

im glad they nixed the paseo which wouldve been pointless. as for the one way traffic. i think it actually would be a good idea, if only for a few blocks, like heading west from grove up until maybe jersey ave or so. with one way traffic, there would be enough room to widen the sidewalks (which are pretty narrow in comparison to every other retail strip ive ever been on). this would allow more trees and areas to have tables and chairs outside of restaurants.

the argument about car traffic is a meaningless one because even if people do drive south down newark, they have no where to park on that side of the street anyways. at least if the street was one way, people could park on both sides of the street which would allow even more drivers to pass by and stop in front of a store. the planning board got one thing right. lets see if they get another.

The new condos and housing in general would be fine with me, but ofcourse there wont be any answer to transporting all these new people into the city, with much needed and already overcrowded train service during rush hour. this means, JC is just going to choke on thousands of more cars and parking lots instead. That Im not looking foward to.

id also check out the journal/mcginly square area in terms of a decent area thats affordable to buy and close enough to the PATH train so that you dont always need the car and others can get to you more easily as well. a big problem i had with even some places downtown (besides the price) was that they were too far from any train and that would make other visiters not too exited about the trip. if thats not a concern, then maybe it doesnt matter, but ive lived here for a few months and like it a lot.

urbanrenewal, i could not agree with you more. i really wish the loews was more aggressive about promoting what could be the best (only) indie concert venue in this city but they seem very timid about it for some reason. its an awesome theater and needs to promote these shows and have more of them, but i dont know why that cant happen.

Litter in this city is getting out of control, and a lot has to do with the lack of trash cans.

thats no excuse. Its funny i was just in Paris, and its amazing how hard it is to find a trash can on the street. yet the city is extremely clean. Especially the subways!!

This is not Manhattan (N.Y.) and Paris is for tourists. It's Jersey City where it is costly to tax payers to constantly replace the public trash cans because of vandals. Also do you think the other boroughs have a trash can on every corner ? Manhattan is different.

manhattan isnt that different. i lived in brooklyn for 4 years and have seen queens. 90% of the intersections have trash cans and they were a big contribution to the streets remaining clean inboth those boroughs. obviously, this isnt NYC and never will be, but i dont think its that hard to keep the streets a little cleaner.

I dont know what it is about here that vandals are so excited about breaking trash cans, but perhaps the cans themselves need to be bolted down to the street to be savage proof since thats who seems to prevent the city from staying clean.

at the very least, you could go to the couple places by JSQ like off vroom and bergen or the upstairs joint on JFK. i know they sell that stuff there.

hoboken def isnt the brainiest place on the weekends when the meatheads make their way in. i guess, the study was taken during a weekday perhaps.

Call me when theres some affordable housing or some worth while retail store going up. And no im not angry cause im poor or cant afford housing .

thats just dumb. if you want to live in a transitioning city, then dont complain when what happens naturally with more housing and retail opens next door to you. it happens in every major city. yes manhattan and bk too. go live in the burbs if you want a stupid cut out taco bell. this new retail may actually provide some stores and bars that arent available anywhere else which would be nice. and god forbid more people move in to a city. who would've figured.

Re: Cars beat mass transit for Hudson commuters

yes, im a bike rider too and i use it to commute from jsq to my job in hoboken, but unfortunately, sometimes there is the temptation to go into that neighbor 5 borough city every once in a while and there is no other option but the PATH on weekends. they basically have a monopoly on people without cars for getting into the city and so they can let service slide and they dont give a shit.
like 2 weeks ago when the trains completely shut down and a lot of people were stranded or had to get to JSq to take a bus to Port Authority. There was no one there to inform people what to do and how to do it. I just feel a little competition from a light rail or a ped tunnel would help them step up their game.

yes, lets set something up. somebody message me. im in for riding, emploring, advocating, etc.

ps-that really sucks that its more convenient to go back to NYC for a reliable bike shop. how can not one shop survive in this city and a suburb like parsippany has two or three?

i would def be down for this as one who has recently moved from a much larger biking community (brooklyn) and commute to hoboken everyday now from JSQ. someone set up a link or send me an email, and id love to be part of this group too.

so, just wondering, is there any bike shop in all of JC currently as that will be good to know?

Re: Three 40-plus story towers on 110 and 111 First Street sites.
Home away from home
Home away from home

i also agree that the construction should be safe for now. about the retail space, i think the main problem is that the zoning is not ideal for creating long strips of stores. the only real store strip in the city is on newark ave and another on central ave in the heights, which has no real transit connection except for crawling busses. washington street had the potential for creating another retail strip but as ian mentioned, trump plaza f'ed that up by putting its retail along the long side of the building leaving utility doors against washington street.

either way, i still think as more people come into the city, even these little pockets of stores that are isolated from each other will do ok as long as enough people are around to support them.

and yes, we do need a clown doll store.

Re: New PATH trains, then more zip
Home away from home

yea, but if the city really wants to reduce car traffic, it could close a lane of the holland tunnel and allow only bikers and walkers to use it. I would. Ofcourse the tunnel is already overcrowded with cars and no one would invest that money into pedestrians who dont pay, so its not happening.

I also Agree on the taxing of automobiles to encourage mass transit ridership, but the fact is, that mass transit doesnt really exist effeciently enough. If there were talks of more rail and bus lines, it would be a different story, but on the contrary, as the city is growing and prospering, they are cutting bus lines away and building garages for every major structure they build downtown. NJ needs to follow NYCs example of how to not be completely reliant on vehicles.

yea, im not saying they dont play good movies, but im saying they dont play any good NEW movies. Reference Loews on Wikipedia and see that they dont play any movies in a current release.

Im not so sure one indie theater in this entire city would tank. i think there would be enough interest being that there are only two theaters in the city as it is and they mostly play garbage mainstream movies. Another theater that plays quality movies with decent access through public transit should be able to make it with all the artists that do still live here.

This would def be a great addition to the city if the museum hosted a good indie theater much like the BAM in Brooklyn or Sunshine. I think Loews at JSQ is more geared to movies of the time the theater was actually built so lets hope this can work for some newer flicks.

Wow, one of five states with this stupid rule. I didnt realize how bad it was. If we cant get supermarkets and restaurants with licenses, can we at least get 24 hour bodeges and liquor stores so the city isnt dry at 10pm. It ends up giving NYC more business in the long run which essentially does hurt all liquor business in NJ. Dummies.
