For my backyard, I put a litter box inside a large rubbermaid storage tote. On one side of the tote I cut out a square opening for the cats to go in. Believe or not, the cats use this litter box.

Now if you are not managing the colony and just want the cats away from your property check the options on this link:

Good luck. PM me if you would like more assistance.

haha. Yes, we are forewarned. Thank you ECh.

However, I hope the people you are referring to who are letting their kitties out for play time have spayed and neutered them beforehand.

On the other hand, JC has an epidemic of people just throwing their cats out when they become an incovenience. And these kitties are usually not neutered.

Any cat feral cat TNRd is returned to the original location of the trapping after neutering.

Re: Announcing The Neighborhood Feral Cat Initiative

The origin of a feral cat is one of a domesticated cat just like a dog is a domesticated animal.

However, when cats are born outside a social human environment they do become wild or feral and are fearful of humans.

Life on the streets for these cats is hard but they deserve to live but that does not mean we should let them continue to breed.

Sterilizing the cats and managing the colony is the only effective way to reduce their numbers. Well fed cats do not rummage through garbage but sadly the starving ones do.

Don't worry, I think there will be enough cats around for a while yet to keep the rats at bay.

Yes Parkman. Trainees will learn that the left ear of each cat is cut/tipped at a slight angle for the purpose of identifying these cats as already having been spayed or neutered.

Kudos to you for being proactive with TNR.

Announcing The Neighborhood Feral Cat Initiative
Home away from home
Home away from home

Companion Animal Trust, Inc., a New Jersey non profit corporation located in Jersey City, announces the formation of a new program entitled The Neighborhood Feral Cat Initiative. The mission of the Neighborhood Feral Cat Initiative is to raise public awareness about the feral cat crisis in the Hudson County community and provide practical ways to deal with the issue through free Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) training workshops, starting March 28th in Jersey City.

Feral cats are free-roaming cats that are untamed and unsuitable for adoption. These cats are either born in the wild or have been abandoned and become wild. If left alone, they keep reproducing, creating a crisis on many levels.

Free Monthly Workshops

The free monthly Trap-Neuter-Return training workshops begin on March 28th. Attendees will learn all the steps in setting up a managed cat colony including establishing good community relations, feeding, building and placing shelters, arranging vet care, safely handling feral cats, and trapping. All workshop attendees will become TNR certified and Hudson County residents will gain access to low cost spay/neuter and trap rentals.

The 2009 workshops will be held from 12 noon to 3pm in Jersey City on the following dates:

March 28, April 25, May 30, June 27, July 25, August 22, September 26, October 31 and November 28.

The number to call for reservations and location information is 201-884-9649. Leave a voicemail and someone will call you back. Volunteers and TNR coaches are needed and if interested in helping please call.

For further information about the workshops call 201-884-9649.

Trap-Neuter-Return is endorsed by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, The Humane Society of the United States, the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services and the New Jersey Animal Rights Alliance.

Companion Animal Trust, Inc. is an animal welfare organization whose mission is to protect and help homeless animals.

These owners are very irresponsible = un-neutered male, breeding, untrained and abused.

The dogs are not to blame but most certainly need help. the dogs.

Please contact animal control if you see these dogs being abused or hurt.

I know these people and their dogs. The dogs are South African Boerboels. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boerboel. Very popular with white supremacist/skinhead groups (although I make no representation as to the owners of these two). Tan with a short coat. The male weighs at least 200 lbs. They are fully untrained. And they are breeding them! Absolutely absurd. This woman can't control them, whether on leash or not. She's been dragged down the street by them.

The woman's boyfriend/husband constantly beats and kicks the larger one when he pulls on his leash. They have attacked other dogs in the neighborhood as well, and many of the other dog owners have spoken about putting a complaint for animal cruelty together against them as well.

I also heard that someone else from portside towers was bitten about a week ago too and cops were involved in that one as well

How the hell did they only get a summons for off leash. This is assault, plain and simple.

The following is quoted from the NJ Dept of Health and Senior Services written by Colin Campbell, Senior Public Health Veterinarian.

"The Centers for Disease Control estimate there are approximately 4 million people bitten each year, most of whom are children, and an average of 20 deaths each year caused by dog bites. Dogs belonging to more than 30 breeds have been responsible for fatal attacks on people."

30 breeds = 20 deaths. So if you are afraid of a pit then you should show caution with all dogs. Note that most victims are children.

I have read this before and take issue with it because it is based on press accounts and it covers 24 years of probable inaccurate reporting by the media.

Actually Merritt Clifton is an intelligent though extreme animal rights activist who I believe is not advocating for domesticated animals, particularly Pitbulls, similiarly to the HSUS. The HSUS would like to see the domesticated pet dog die out.

Pit bull terrier: 1110, 104
Rottweiler: 409, 58
Wolf hybrid: 71, 18
German shepherd: 63, 17

Stereotypes frequently have a kernel of truth. Whatever the reason, and I agree it is undoubtedly bad dog owners, Pit bulls are responsible for twice as many attacks causing bodily harm, and attacks resulting in death, than the next highest breed. Apropos of nothing, a Jack Russell also killed someone in an attack (one of two reported). Link to the full study. Oh, and Mr. Clifton is not an anti-dog nut, he's the editor of Animal People newspaper and an advocate of animal welfare worldwide.

It is fact that when a bite or attack is reported in the media much of the time they incorrectly list the dog as a pit.

The pit breed is a good breed and can live very well with families, children and other pets. You cannot condemn an entire breed based on the misuse by some. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but please look at all sides of the issue before coming to a conclusion.

I live in Bergen Lafayette and have been very active in my community with direct contact with the Police Captain and Executive Officer.

As one meeting I was told point blank that the police do not enforce the "curfew" because if they did, they would have to spend the rest of the night at the station house until a parent or guardian came to collect the underage offenders.

The reasoning is I suppose, the police are needed and community is better serviced if they were on the street instead of the station house.

Re: ANIMAL CRUELTY AT THE HUDSON COUNTY SPCA -- at 480 Johnston Avenue, Jersey City

Home away from home

There are rumors that the prosecutor wants to settle the case which would be bad for the animals. Zoe has said in the past that she wants to become a certified animal control officer. If she is found guilty of these cruelty charges that would pretty much zero out her chances of getting cetified. So it is imperative that she go to trial.

We have to get these two bottom feeders out of the animal business completely.

Oh, and we forgot to tell you that Hector is on disability income because of a "head" injury he received a long time ago and yet he is still able to perform his "dog" catching function. And! the Health Officer of North Bergen and Union City with the initials of RC knows this.

They are all in collusion. Well RC, it's time to pay market price for decent animal sheltering whether your Mayors like it or not. You have been abusing the animals for too long.

Hector has got to go!

The State SPCA is as guilty as Hector and Zoe and only when it becomes apparent that the assets and property are about to go bye bye, does the State SPCA come in and revoke the charter.

They had the power over these many many years to stop the abuse, cruelty and thievery that went on in that hell hole. But instead, they were partners in it.

Shame on the State SPCA and shame on the NJ State government for allowing the archaic SPCA rogue operation to continue as it does.

We must demand better for our animals.
