I'm glad to see it's not just me that can't get this info. I don't see it online anywhere and the Fulop team didn't respond to my question about this.

Re: Extended Warranty - PC Richards, Home Depot - feedback?

Home away from home

The only extended warranty I can recall getting in recent memory was on a TV. I did have occasion to use it to replace a bulb, something that couldn't be done by the average consumer. As a result, I bought an extended warranty on my new TV. I used squaredeal as a result of a friend's recommendation and favorable reviews on the Internet. It cost about $40 less than HH Gregg's warranty and was for one year longer, 4 years total. The warranty details were difficult to find but I found them after calling. The warranty calls for in home service. I'm the first to admit that it was probably unnecessary, but I have peace of mind.

SRhia wrote:
Does anyone has feedback, or stories, about extended warranty from PC Richards and/or Home Depot?

We're buying a washer and fridge, and is thinking about getting extended warranties for both appliances (Should we?) - and we have the option of buying from either PC Richards or Home Depot (probably PC Richards).

Would love to hear some real life experiences from either places? I did some quick research on web, and found tons of horrible feedback (I suspect partially since people with bad experience tend to complain more), so I'm a bit concerned.

thanks in advance.[/quote]

Bad deal and I go along with jcneighbor. PC Richards also has a reputation for hardselling warranties to the point of making the customer feel stupid if he refuses. Having said that, if you still want a warranty, get it here - www.squaretrade.com/?. You'll save lots of money and deal with a reputable company.

Re: Home Theater Installation Companies

I needed something more advanced than Geek Squad and found exactly what I was looking for. Bear in mind I was not only looking for a new TV and installation, but also to upgrade some audio equipment.

I found 2 companies that fit different bills and recommend them both without hesitation. For TV's and other installations, Bob, the owner of Smart Home Integration was incredibly reasonable and listened to my needs. He was responsible for buying my TV, apple TV, stand and installation. --- 609-636-8510.

Audio Connection is a high end audio store in Verona. They've been around a long time and the owner, John, is an incredibly fair and knowledgeable person. I bought a high end amplifier and, incredibly, it was delivered because I need it in a rush! John also fixed up some of my other equipment and didn't ask for a cent. His price for the amp was lower than anyplace on the net. audioconnection.com.

What distinguishes these guys from everyone else I dealt with is they're love for what they do and they listen to what you want instead of trying to maximize profits. They are both righteous people. Although they are both not in the immediate area, they have no problem servicing JC.

I should also mention I dealt with a certain high end dealer in Jersey City who I'll leave nameless. Their main motive seemed to maximize profits. I gave him my budget and it went in one ear and out the other.

Anything new in this area?

I called Geek Squad / Best Buy and didn't get a great feeling. They seem to be set up for basic or simple installations and repairs. I also left a message at the other place mentioned.

My setup is rather complicated. It was custom set up many years ago (15 or so) by Stereo Exchange in NYC. I need some place along those lines but would never go back to them - they totally ripped me off on cables. Things are starting to break down and I need a new TV. Some components, which cost a small fortune at the time, are in need of repair also. My music system is the most important thing to me and need someone knowledgeable in this area.

I rent so I don't want to be doing anything very permanent. Thanks for any suggestions.

Personal income tax service / tax accountant

Is it possible there's no thread on this? Anyway, I couldn't find one.

After messing up my return with Turbo Tax and spending way too many hours doing it myself (with Turbo Tax), I'm ready to bite the bullet. French Connection, or Ed French, in Journal Square, seems to have gathered lots of good reviews on the net. Has anyone used this firm?

Or provide a recommendation? Must be in Jersey City.

Grove PATH Bike parking
Home away from home
Home away from home

Has anyone had their bike stolen from here or seriously messed with after locking it up properly?

I've been parking my bike at the Grove PATH for several years now and haven't had too many problems. I keep it locked well. The worst things that happened were a few malicious things like emptying the air out of my tires and messing with my gears.

Now, I plan to upgrade and am wondering if parking a bike in the $1k range is asking for trouble. The alternative is keeping my present bike to use for commuting to the PATH and getting a 2nd bike.

Fran Schumer does not award stars. If you look at the bottom of the Satis review you see that she awarded the restaurant "don't miss" - her highest rating. She also awarded 30 acres "don't miss".
Maybe only the chief restaurant critic of the Times is a star-giver. Schumer is the NJ reviewer.

Yes, the only one that awards stars is the chief critic in the Wednesday review of a NYC restaurant, generally Manhattan or Brooklyn. Currently, the chief restaurant critic is Pete Wells. Regional reviews all follow the same format as the one given to Thirty Acres.

Re: Cleaning Service

I called Popo and was really turned off by their pricing policy. As a result, I decided against them. They wanted to charge for x number of hours at $60 per hour for the first visit based solely on the size of my of my apt. It came out to more than 50% more than what I'm paying now. What bothered me is that every company I have dealt with pays a visit and makes a determination on the cost based on what they see. Popo does not do that. They go by however much time it takes them to clean on the initial visit. I found that very unprofessional and told them so. How can you be in the business and not be able to judge from taking a walk through?

I'm guessing, but also not taken into consideration is that they're used to Hoboken railroad apartments. Although my apartment is large for a one bedroom, it's a lot easier to clean than a railroad since there are only 2 rooms and a bathroom.

That's why I like independent people (who come with recommendations). I decided to read my present cleaning person the riot act and, if that doesn't work, continue my search for someone independent. I've been with them for going on 10 years and there's been lapses in service in the past year. Hopefully, that can be straightened out when the owner learns I'm on the market.

What's the latest info? I just dropped my cleaning service of 10 years. I have no special needs except that I'd like someone independent, i.e., the same person or crew every cleaning, trustworthy and with their own equipment and supplies. Thanks.

Re: LSP Bridge

There aren't many alternate routes if you're coming from downtown. Grand St. is a street to avoid though under any circumstances. There's been lots of accidents because people drive more maniacal than usual here. Presently, some traffic signals are out and there are detours making it that much more dangerous.

I find the best way to get to the park is taking Bright St. up to and through the Pathmark shopping center. Take a break and enjoy all the fine stores. Go to the end of the shopping center (past the dry cleaners) and take a left on the small street (Bates) that goes into Grand. That's just before Pacific. Wait patiently until traffic eases and shoot across to Pacific. The rest of the way is a breeze.

Coming back is a little dicier at the Pacific and Grand intersection, particularly during rush hour.

Not that it matters, but I live by the park and have been biking to the Grove PATH for several years.

(Not) Voting by email
Home away from home
Home away from home

I relocated to NYC during the outage and decided to take advantage of the vote by mail option recently offered by the clerk's office. The instructions on their website included mailing in a form to request to vote by mail. In turn, if approved, the clerk's office was to send instructions and a ballot.

I followed the instructions and last night, I rec'd a one word email from the clerk's office, "received." No ballot or instructions.

I called today and was told they canceled the email voting due to an overwhelming response. Why did I have to call to find this out? If they sent an email saying "received," they surely could have explained the option was canceled.

Upon calling the clerk's office today, I was told I can vote in NY (where I'm staying) as a provisional voter. Any voting booth.

I'm not voting, the first presidential election I'll miss and one of the few elections in 40 years I'm missing. I don't believe that my vote, that is, if NY lets me vote, will be counted and at this point, it's late and it would be a big inconvenience.

I'm stunned by these events.

Zipcar, red light violation
Home away from home
Home away from home

I just rec'd notification from zipcar that they rec'd and paid a ticket for me (and charged me of course). Apparently, the ticket resulted from a camera. According to the ticket, the time has expired to plead not guilty. It occurred over a month ago and frankly, I have no recollection of even being in the location stated much less going through a light. However, it is possible that it is my rented car with me in it (they sent a video). And I don't normally run red lights. I would have at least liked the opportunity to fight it if there are points involved. Zipcar rec'd the ticket on 8/23 according to their stamp and I'm receiving it just now, 18 days later.

2 questions. Will there be points? If so, that would mean zipcar would have to supply the Jersey City with my info. Second, do I have recourse against anyone since I was notified so late?

Thanks.

Not advisable to discard cc receipts before 1 year, at least mc and visa. A customer can dispute or request a copy for up to 1 year. Not sure about amex and other cards. If you cannot produce the signed receipt, you're out the money. Also, IRS regulations state you must keep records for 3 years.

Re: Finally some more bike racks at Grove St.

There were actually 6 racks added. Thanks at least in part to HDSID and Fulop's office. That makes for plenty of room now. And if they actually remove the abandoned bikes like they're promising to do, there will be even more room. Yet it amazes me that people still hitch their bikes to trees and the fence. I saw 2 people wearing bazillion dollar bike outfits doing that this morning, hitching up to a tree, with plenty of spots on racks available.

I'm not sure I understand the rationale for putting a temporary lane on Grove. Is it an experiment? If so, what does anyone hope to learn? The lanes are useless between Newark and Montgomery during the day because of the double parking. Nothing has changed in that regard. I'm all for bike lanes and educating the public, drivers and bikers included, but this seems like a pointless exercise.
