Boy Dies from Crash Involving Off-duty JC Cop

NEWARK, N.J. -- A 2-year-old boy has died from injuries suffered in a crash involving an off-duty Jersey City police officer whom authorities say was intoxicated.

Juan Carlos Zelaya was pronounced dead at 10:20 p.m. Saturday at University Hospital, authorities told The Star-Ledger of Newark for Sunday newspapers.

The boy and with his 37-year-old mother, Ruth Zelaya, were in a Pontiac Grand Am that was struck from behind on the Pulaski Skyway Tuesday night by a Jeep Cherokee driven by Officer Kevin Freibott.

Blood alcohol tests showed Freibott's blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit.

Ruth Zelaya's condition had been upgraded from critical to stable by Friday at Jersey City Medical Center. Hospital officials did not immediately return calls Sunday on her condition.

Freibott was suspended without pay and charged with driving while intoxicated and assault by auto. Authorities have said Freibott could face additional disciplinary charges because the accident occurred on a day when he was out sick.

A spokesman for Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio did not immediately return calls Sunday on whether Freibott would face additional criminal charges.

Very bad experience there. I literally got up from the chair and left mid-procedure.

I was going to put this in a PM, but why shouldn't everyone know...

I was there when the receptionist PUNCHED a patient in the face when she dared to ask for a referral while the receptionist was on a personal phone call.

All heck broke loose.

When there's a fist fight while your tooth is being extracted, I think it's a good time to get out of there.

That was the 2nd time I was there.

The first time, there was a substitute dentist who was drinking when she saw me. Yes, I was the last appointment of the day, but still....

How about a $1 movie theater where you can see movies from a few months ago? (Just before they come out on DVD.) I'm always a few months behind anyway, I might as well save a few bucks. Anyone know 1 like that?

I'm not saying don't do it, but you might want to know what those clothes really go:

You might do more good by to a local church, shelter or other charity.

I know that Legal Aid gives health and other benefits to gay registered domestic partners. Not sure whether they were registered and how far those benefits extend. As far as life insurance, you could choose whoever you wanted as the beneficiary.

Hey, I heard Lance is going to have other runners pacing him, like he does for bike races... You think Fulop will have pacers too?

I too, am in awe of this guy. I feel like the fact that I work full-time is enough, and excuses me from doing much more than eating totino's pizza rolls in bed as I fall asleep. And then there's these people who run 26 miles - amazing.

GrovePath, I'm with you - let's start a Fulop for Mayor rally!

(p.s. I donated too, and got my boyfriend to donate too!)

Reviving an old topic, the September issue of Domino Magazine (the home design spin-off of Lucky magazine) had a page about Green Roofs.

They also have some info on their website. (I think it's actually more info than was in the magazine.)

yes, dr. savoy himself is a great optometrist and a nice man, but that somehow doesn't make up for the fact that the average wait time there is about 45 minutes to an hour, even with an appointment (that's been my experience at least). the waiting room is usually filled with children running around and a backup of cranky patients, and the staff there can be indifferent, rude, or just super-absentminded. the problem is that the bulk of his business is medicaid, so i don't really feel like he bends over backwards to make visiting his office a pleasant experience or keep his prices low.

I agree. I really like the doctors there, but the overall experience of visiting that office may be too poor to make it worth it. The last time I was there, I had an appointment but I waited more than an hour in a waiting room with a bunch of sniffling runny-nose little kids crawling all over everything and everybody while their parents ate McDonalds and talked on their cell phones. I felt like I needed a bath in Lysol when I left.

Also, the last time I was there, there was a woman filling in for one of the doctors on a Saturday, I believe. She was excellent, and she told me she had an office in the city. I would love to remember who she was/where her office was, I would go to her again.

I noticed that quite a while ago. I posted a review there of Ground - it was one of their "editor's picks," so I don't think they post bad reviews of their "picks." I even tried resubmitting it a few times and emailing them.

As a result, I don't think they're very reliable. Other than to get a phone number or an address.

Re: Joe Vas for Congress -- See for Yourself!!!

Quote:
It's all about the apathy.... 19% of the registered Democrats voted and I'm sure most were straight party line voters. It's amazing to see that 49.4% of Hudson County's registered voters are independents, which is a waste in HC. Whoever wins the primary, wins the general election so independents don't even participate in the process.

Apparently, they said at the polls yesterday, that everyone was Independent and could choose when they got to the polls on primary day. When they said that, I sort of remembered hearing that being passed as a law. I've thought of myself as a registered democrat my whole life, but at the polls yesterday, they said, "Do you want to vote Democrat or Republican?"

So, rather than say it's a waste, maybe we should be questioning that law.

On the other hand, maybe it's good, it allows anyone to wake up on election day and say, "Hey, I'd like to vote in this one" without going through all the trouble of changing parties and whatnot.

Thank you, 25 McWilliams, for the information you shared.

I was originally thinking that I might not vote. I was really fed up with the amount of flyers left on my door and how negative they all are. When I first read your list of endorsements, my first thought was, "The Sierra Club endorses the guy leaving all the flyers???"

But, now that I read this, I can understand that it takes a lot of campaigning to beat the HCDO. It also means a lot to me that Steve Fulop endorses Vas. I respect Steve Fulop.

I also found Tris McCall's piece on "Why I'm Voting for Vas" to be helpful.
http://www.trismccall.net/jcj_vas.htm

I will get out of bed a little bit earlier tomorrow to vote for Vas. (Also, thank you Mia, for poll times info.)

In my mind, any vote against the HCDO is probably a good one.

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS PIMP?

Resized Image
(Sorry for the unclear photo, but I was lucky I could whip my camera phone out that quickly!)

In case you can't tell, that's traffic-cone-orange FUR head to toe!

Dojo-mojo had a sighting in a pastel pink get-up nearly two months ago, and got a much clearer photo.

One JC friend reports seeing him in a black and white zebra outift, another spotted him in purple - but there has been no photographic evidence.

Let's stay on top of this. Who is he? Where is he going? What colors have you seen? Will he continue to wear fur all summer?

Post your PIMP SIGHTINGS here.

Bonus points if you can get your photo WITH him!

Re: Balance Salon

I tried Balance actually on the suggestion of the jclist contingency. This was a couple of years back I guess.

I went to a guy named Frank there. He was a genius, I loved him, he made my hair look better than it had ever looked before. I went back to Frank a few times.

Frank left for a while because he was sick. Some other woman cut my hair and it was \"bleh\" at best. I don\'t mind a \"bleh\" haircut (I wear my hair pretty simple) but I\'m not going to pay that much for it. I can get a basic haircut at the mall.

Anyway, I don\'t think Frank ever came back. I\'d love to know where he ended up. But I\'d probably never pay anyone else that much for a haircut.

The Guardian Angels are Coming
Home away from home
Home away from home

From nj.com:

The Guardian Angels are coming

Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, told The Jersey Journal today that the beret-wearing volunteers are coming to Jersey City.

The Guardian Angels have long thought about establishing a Jersey City chapter, Sliwa said, but decided to do so now in the wake of two violent attacks on women in Downtown Jersey City this week.

Sliwa said patrols will begin Monday. On Sunday at 4 o'clock, he said he'll come to Jersey City for a kickoff meeting at the Dixon Deli on Varick Street, where the deli owner was attacked and robbed Monday evening.

"I'd like to come out and talk with some of the merchants and residents and tell them that we will be a visual deterrence," Sliwa said.
