Re: ob/gyn recommendations needed

I've never heard of any of them. But, I would, hands down and without hesitation, recommend Dr. Thomas Miglaccio in Hoboken (Washington and 6th). The office is Brescia and Miglaccio. His bedside manner is very professional but approachable.
Plus, they just moved into a new and very nice office.

This poor guy. We need to ship young men between 14 and 40 into some special protective zone where they won't be clubbed, beated, robbed, or shot. Jersey City is just not the place to be a dude.

One afternoon, not more than 3 weeks past, two women, late 20's, one black, one white, were approaching to sit next to the blonde with bug eye sunglasses on the bench. No joke. She jumps up, onto the seat where they were going to sit (like a monkey), called them lesbians and told them in no way they were sitting there. They made a beeline right for another bench. And yes, at the time, she was pretending to be chatting with someone like she had a phone headset on.

Disgruntled with Comcast & attempting to switch over to Verizon...

Does anyone know if Verizon DSL internet is actually available in downtown Jersey City? We're trying to get it connected but have been having problems. I'm not sure if it's that our building hasn't been wired correctly or if it's not available in the neighborhood yet at all? Their customer service people have been useless.

Are Comcast or Verizon the only options for internet around here? :(

Thanks for any tips.

I too saw the blonde woman laughing loudly and for a long time, seemingly at nothing. The next day, I heard her speaking, as if she was on the phone, but with no phone. She seemed to be explaining something and was quite articulate about it. Again I wondered if she had lost a professional job and was under the impression that she was in a meeting or something like that.

It doesn't seem safe for people to approach her if they have children with them, and she doesn't seem to like to be approached or spoken to in any case. I would leave that to the experts (hopefully they will be on the scene soon), and maybe we can learn how to help once we know more about where help is needed.

Re: the two women in hamilton park
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

On Monday I tried to reach out to the blonde, asking if she needed some help. She was on a bench speaking loudly (as if on a cell phone, but no phone in sight). It does seem as though she might have some mental illness as she called me a robot and accused me of trying to sabotage John McCain's security detail (or maybe she really can just read minds) before throwing a lit cigarette at me and my kids.

But anyway, I spoke then with the police officer assigned to HP as well as Officer Reilly today in the Captain's office to see if they could find out more and perhaps rally up some services. Last month we made the JCMC outreach folks that parkman referred to aware of both of these women, I will follow up to see if they have been able to make contact.

To the person who asked how to help - tonight's HPNA meeting will have a lineup of various charity organizations in the local area who can help individuals like these. The reps will be letting the community know of ways to volunteer/donate to help. With the economy I think this might become more common as the months wear on. Come if you can: 7:45pm, Wed, 9/3, 1 McWilliams Place, 2nd floor auditorium.

The bid was awarded a couple weeks ago to the developers of Hamilton Square. Come to tonight's HPNA meeting to get a sneak peek of the final plans. A huge groundbreaking ceremony is in the works for neighbors, contractors, city officials. I don't know of a set start date yet, but we can ask tonight. We may schedule a special community meeting (or dedicated HPNA meeting) to discuss all details related to the renovation like construction schedule, updating neighbors, etc. But if you can come tonight, you'll be as informed as anyone.

I recommend E. Rutherford Roofing Company. They put a flat roof on my brownstone building two years ago and did a nice job. They quoted more money than others, but were informative with the type of material to be used and provided a large list of references; they've done quite a bit of work in the JC/Hoboken area.

'Can you sweep this under the rug?'

Shore cops say Healy wanted it 'swept under rug'
Wednesday, September 03, 2008

"Y ou are going to be sorry for this whole incident."

- "Do yourself a favor and get your chief down here before this goes any further because I can't believe you don't know who I am."

- "I can't believe you maced me. You had no reason to do that. I wasn't resisting. I wasn't fighting you. I didn't do anything wrong. I am the mayor of Jersey City. I was a judge, I was a lawyer, I am a good personal friend with your Chief (Lenny Guida)."

- " . I'm sorry. Call the chief and let's get this rectified without any charges. For the good of your town, for the good of your department, for the good of my city, we need to resolve this without charges."

- "Can you sweep this under the rug?"

These were some of the comments made by Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy while being transported to the Bradley Beach police headquarters, quoted in testimony by several police officers before a grand jury that eventually indicted him on charges of resisting arrest and obstructing the administration of law.

These are statements that did not see much, if any, light of day in the municipal court prosecution of Healy.

"I never made any of those statements," Healy said yesterday. "I'm from Jersey City - I couldn't influence anyone down there. I have no juice in that community. It's completely untrue."

THE ARREST

In the summer of 2006, Healy tried to intervene in a couple's quarrel outside a bar, Barry's, which was owned then by his sister in the Shore community. Jeff Barnes and Jacqueline Volante later testified against the mayor and said his speech was slurred and that he was intoxicated and reeked of alcohol and was told on several occasions to go away.

The mayor was arrested after being pepper-sprayed and handcuffed in front of a crowd of Healy's friends and relatives. Police testified that the crowd was unruly and threatening, and cursing. Some of the members of the crowd testified to something different before the grand jury, saying they only saw police pepper-spraying the mayor and holding him down with their knees in his back.

OTHER EVIDENCE

Bradley Beach Prosecutor Jason Shamy said the only testimony he was interested in bringing to municipal court concerned any evidence up to the point of arrest.

The more interesting "evidence" and comments that were allegedly made by the mayor - in an attempt to use his influence to intimidate local law enforcement - came after Healy was cuffed and placed in a squad car and brought to the Bradley Beach police headquarters.

This was evident in papers filed on May 18, 2007 by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office of Luis Valentin. The documents were an answer to Healy's and his wife Maureen's attempt to reinstate dismissed disorderly charges they made against Browning. They provided a peek into grand jury testimony that led to Healy's indictment on disorderly charges. Some of the testimony start this column.

Based on these documents, which were asked for and obtained, Assemblyman Louis Manzo of Jersey City, who is operating his own public advocacy office, sent a letter to Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio asking that the testimony be reviewed and used to oust Healy from office.

Yesterday, DeFazio said he has not budged from his stance that Healy's arrest "does not touch upon his office." DeFazio said he never saw either the grand jury testimony or the documentation filed by Monmouth Prosecutor Valentin.

"It is not my jurisdiction," he said. "The arrest and trial all took place in Monmouth County."

At least DeFazio called back. Valentin did not return a telephone call. A spokesman for state Attorney General Anne Milgram issued a "no comment" response.

MANZO'S RONE ARGUMENT

Manzo, who may be seeking Healy's seat in May, says he sees no difference between what the Jersey City mayor allegedly did and the circumstances surrounding the removal this summer from elected office of Newark Councilwoman Dana Rone. Rone was convicted of obstruction of justice when she tried to intimidate some Rutgers University police in Newark after they made a traffic stop involving her nephew.

Grand jury testimony by Shore police officers has the Jersey City mayor demanding that Browning, if he knew what was good for him, call the Bradley Beach police chief, according to the county prosecutor. More damaging was testimony from police that on numerous occasions while in custody Healy asked that the whole matter be "swept under the rug."

Healy defense attorney Ralph Lamparello dismissed the police grand jury testimony about sweeping the whole mess under the floor covering. Lamparello said he believes his client when he said the police version never happened, adding that in the Rone case there was video evidence and Healy did not have that benefit.

Healy said the Rone case "is not just as different as apples and oranges, but sausages and peppers."

WHO'S GOT 'JUICE'?

The mayor added that if anyone had "juice" it was Bradley Beach who flew Barnes and Volante, who had since married, up to New Jersey from Florida to testify against him. He said the couple had relatives in municipal government, including the Police Department.

The mayor also complained that when he and his wife filed charges against Bradley Beach Police Officer Terry Browning, whom they say was responsible for her falling and being injured, that the complaint never saw the light of day. Healy says he never saw her fall, although it was a given that she was injured.

Manzo suggested Healy's "juice" was his sister, owner of the bar, where the Bradley Beach police chief eats.

Jennifer Morrill, a spokeswoman for Healy, responded to Manzo's letter to DeFazio in the usual Jersey City way:

"These are the rantings of a disgruntled four-time loser who has come up with a frivolous argument to get into the Mayor's Office through the back door knowing the people of Jersey City will never elect him. Mr. Manzo is also frustrated because Mayor Healy would not support him as the candidate for the state Senate and that when Mr. Manzo pleaded with the mayor to keep his personal friend on the city payroll, despite his excessive absenteeism, the mayor would not do so."

Manzo said Morrill must mean three-time loser because she worked for him in his 2004 mayoral bid.

Morrill denied that, saying she was never paid and only helped a girlfriend one time who needed some help with Manzo's literature.

You know it will not end here. This is not a "Rashomon" moment where people see the same thing in different ways. What it seems to come down to is one side or the other is lying.

Parents group to rally at board of ed over water quality

by The Jersey Journal
Wednesday September 03

A parents group plans to hold a rally today in front of the Jersey City Board of Education to ask for changes in district policy in the wake of tests showing lead in some school water sources.

The rally, by the group Parents and Communities United for Education, will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in front of 346 Claremont Ave.

The group is asking the board to create a health and environmental safety committee that includes three parents, an "indoor air quality walk through team" including three parents and issue semi-annual health and safety report cards for each school.

I was walking past the blond woman last week with a neighbor when she started laughing and cackling loudly. At first we thought she was reacting to something from the book she was reading but she then started cursing and rambling on loudly in our direction. Recently I also saw her warmly greeting a homeless guy who had wandered into the park. Before that I had never heard her utter a word in the month or so she has been out there.

Hamilton Park Renovation

Any update?

It seems like sewer lines are being fixed, and a few times W Hamilton was blocked by traffic police (had to go further west to go around the park)... but I don't see any action on the park itself.

Hopefully it is just delayed... like the Hamilton Square construction that was supposedly to complete in the fall.

Still see the two around (brunette with messy hair & blond with sunglasses).

I said hi to the blond as she walked by me... no response, no expression. Brunette still talks on the phone, and avoids eye contact. I guess both want to keep to themselves.

What the heck, it's a public park. Just hope they are not attracting unwanted/bad attention.

I live two blocks from that intersection (only been here a few months, though). It is indeed walkable to the light-rail; maybe an 8-10 minute walk. And, yes, it's South of the part of Greenville where most of the bad stuff seems to happen.

But, do your research. Walk around the area at all times of day and night, different days of the week, etc, to get a feel for it. I get a little weirded out by Ocean Ave sometimes (and I'm always in a car). I seem to recall an article about someone being shot on the corner of Ocean and Pearsall a few months ago, and something else about a couple of guys who lived on Neptune near Garfield getting arrested for driving around with a sawed-off shotgun.

That said, I haven't personally had a problem in the area, or seen anything bad myself.

But if you're willing to live there, why not Bayonne? You can go just one or two more light-rail stops down, and you're in fairly nice parts of Bayonne. I'm sure real-estate prices are a little higher, but probably not ridiculously so.

Teen dies, another hurt, in Jersey City shooting
Wednesday, September 03, 2008
By MICHAELANGELO CONTE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A Jersey City teen died yesterday as a result of being shot twice in the head Sunday morning outside the Holland Gardens housing complex near the Holland Tunnel, officials said.

Lawrence Robertson Jr., 19, of Fulton Avenue, was found wounded at 15th Street and Jersey Avenue at 1:20 a.m. and rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center in extremely critical condition, said Hudson County Prosecutor
Edward DeFazio.

The former Snyder High School student died at the hospital. His body was taken to the state Regional Medical Examiner's Office in Newark for an autopsy, DeFazio said.

The shooting is believed to be related to an ongoing feud and there was no evidence of robbery, DeFazio said.

Shawanda Robertson, the victim's mother, said doctors told her there was little they could do. At 10 a.m. Monday, he was declared brain dead, she said.

"I left the room when they told me they couldn't do anything else. They were just giving me time for myself," Robertson said. Her son was taken off life support Monday night.

Robertson dropped out of high school but was working toward his GED, his mother said. Robertson played basketball at Audubon Park on Sundays, liked to work on computers, and hoped to move out of Jersey City, she added.

"He's my sweet baby," she said.

Gregory Mallard, 19, of Parnell Place in Jersey City, was also shot in the incident but police do not know if it was by the same gunman or if more gunmen were involved, DeFazio said.

Mallard was found at 16th and Erie streets with a bullet wound to his stomach and is expected to recover, DeFazio said.

Yesterday, a dozen young men quietly wrote sentiments of mourning on a T-shirt bearing Robertson's image and attached it to an outside wall of Jersey Fried Chicken at Ocean and Bidwell avenues. Anyone with information about the shootings should contact the Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit at 201-915-1345.

The sentence as written reads that he arrived at the hospital, was treated, and then shot, beaten, and cut with a machete.

Healy pay-to-play proposal won't fly meeting tonight

Wednesday, September 03, 2008
By PAUL KOEPP
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A proposal by Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy to amend Councilman Steve Fulop's pay-to-play ordinance will not be on the table tonight when the City Council holds a special meeting to consider the measure and possibly adopt it.

Healy had argued that by limiting the contributions city vendors can make in municipal elections, the ordinance would put candidates of "modest means" at a disadvantage. He proposed throwing out the limits if a candidate who earns $500,000 or more a year or has $2 million or more in assets enters a race.

In an opinion requested by Fulop, Jersey City Corporation Counsel Bill Matsikoudis wrote yesterday that the mayor's version could not be adopted by the council as an amendment since it would "alter the form" of the ordinance.

That means the City Council will either adopt the ordinance as it is or it will go before voters in November.

In a statement, Healy said that while he respects Matsikoudis' opinion, he is disappointed no changes were embraced Fulop and the rest of the five-member "committee of petitioners" who organized the gathering of over 2,000 signatures for the ordinance. Four of the five would have to agree to any amendments.

"This is a good win for us and a good step in right direction," Fulop said. "Jersey City will now have a chance to have the strictest ethics laws in the state."

The other petition committee members are James Carroll, Daniel Levin, Aaron Morrill and Shelley Skinner.

Tonight's meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Middle School 4, 107 Bright St.

3 bullet wounds in victim near park in Lafayette

Wednesday, September 03, 2008

A Jersey City man was shot in the neck, leg and hand near Ercel Webb Park in the Lafayette section yesterday morning, officials said.

Police responding to Van Horne and Maple streets at 1:18 a.m. found Angel Bonilla, 23, of Kennedy Boulevard, on his back on the sidewalk, reports said. They also found six spent shell casings on the ground and two bullet holes in a nearby car.

Bonilla was rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center, where police learned he had been treated before for being shot, beaten with a bottle, and cut with a machete, reports said.

Bonilla was in stable condition in the hospital's intensive care unit last night, said a hospital spokesman.

Clubbed and kidnapped, then dumped near tracks

Wednesday, September 03, 2008
By CHARLES HACK
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A 22-year-old Philadelphia man told Jersey City cops he was bound, gagged, robbed and dumped near railway tracks in a kidnapping ordeal Sunday night, reports said.

The victim had marks on his ankles, wrists and neck consistent with someone being tied up when police interviewed him at the Jersey City Medical Center on Monday about 3:37 a.m., reports said.

The man's left eye was also swollen shut, reports said.

The former Monticello Avenue resident told police his nightmare began shortly after leaving a birthday party with a couple of friends around 4:45 p.m. Sunday, reports said.

His friends dropped him off at Communipaw and Garfield avenues, reports said.

As he was getting close to the residence he was heading to, at Bramhall and Pacific avenues, a car drove up behind him and the next thing he knew he was struck in the back of the head, reports said.

When he came to, the man told police, he was in a bathtub, with his hands and feet tied and duct tape spread across his entire face except for his nose, reports said.

The man said he heard someone say, "Let's kill this mother--," and another man reply, "No, let's just torture him."

The victim said he lost consciousness again and when he awoke he was at the railroad near Caven Point Road and Chapel Avenue and discovered his cell phone, an unknown amount of cash, and an ID had been stolen, reports said.

Anyone with information about this incident should call (201) 547-5245.

You probably pass that house during morning hours; try late nights or 3 in the morning. They bunch of loud disrespectful little criminals. I?ve seen bad fights and terrible cursing on that corner. Some of their friends were carrying weapons. If you like them so much why don?t you move closer to them? It?s not about race, it?s about respect! I would not live there for free. I?m glad that I moved out from that street.

I can't really move much closer. I live right across the street, you illiterate dope. If we're talking about the same stoop, it's on Paulmier Place (north side of Mercer) about three doors from the corner. Yes, there are kids hanging out there all the time. No, I've never seen them carrying weapons. I've never even heard them out at night, and I would from my living room. But perhaps you're old and confusing them with the crowds that congregate outside of Barrow Bar (although I've never had any reason to suspect them of weapon possession).

My guess: you're old, and perhaps a little (or a lot) out of touch.
