"State killings"? It sounds kind of Orwellian or Stalinesque. Couldn't they have used "murder rate"?

i know of several cases when a bedbug infested tenant moves out and the new tenant becomes infested. Perhaps rent control laws should be changed but that has nothing to do w/ bedbugs

Because it's toxic, and I don't believe the value will go back up after the bubble has burst.

If it's really worth something, why aren't Sovereign Wealth Funds and private capital rushing to buy ths "good" stuff?

Experts say it's a crisis of confidence - that says it all.

I guess time is the final arbiter, so we shall see.

State killings at 5-year low but urban figures up a bit
Tuesday, September 23, 2008
By RICK HEPP
NEWHOUSE NEWS SERVICE

The number of murders in New Jersey fell to 381 last year, the lowest statewide total in five years, even as slayings continued to mount in the state's cities.

The so-called "Urban Fifteen" cities catalogued 264 murders - up from 255 the previous year - even though they have less than a quarter of the state's population, according to the annual Uniform Crime Report issued by the State Police yesterday. Essex County recorded the most homicides with 148.

The decrease in the statewide murder total from 427 to 381 came as New Jersey's overall crime rate continued to fall to historically low levels, the report said. There was also a 7 percent drop in the total number of violent crimes, including decreases in reported rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults with a firearm.

"It seems to be that virtually all categories of reported crime have experienced a decrease, and that has to be taken as an encouraging sign," said Wayne Fisher, director of the Police Institute at Rutgers-Newark.

"It's very difficult to point to one thing, if not impossible, and say this is what did it. But we may be seeing the beginning of a return on the measures police departments are taking around the state."

In particular, Fisher pointed to the increased use of visible police patrols in high-crime areas, the greater responsibility and accountability given to officers on the streets, and the push to arrest fugitives as the most likely strategies implemented over the last several years that have had the largest effect.

Those strategies may be on the chopping block in many departments, however, following President Bush's decision this year to reduce by $350 million nationwide the funding for certain federal anti-crime grants. Known as the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, the money pays for local and state drug, gang and fugitive task forces as well as gang prevention efforts, drug courts and prisoner re-entry programs.

Unveiled last year, it seeks to change how police go after gang members, prevent children from falling into the gang life in the first place and help convicts adjust after they leave prison to make sure they don't return to their old routines. It was initiated to address a rise in murders as well as an increase in shootings.

While the number of murders statewide decreased last year, the Uniform Crime Report shows there is still a need to address urban violence. The number of murders in East Orange, Elizabeth, Irvington, Jersey City, Newark and Paterson remained constant, while Camden and Trenton both saw increases in slayings.

The Uniform Crime Report, which compiles statistics from 552 law enforcement agencies, focuses on seven categories of crime: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft.

This is not about growing anything but I wanna make pickles. How do I do that? I like Batemte half sour pickles, I would like to make those. The ingredients on the jar don't list the spices. I see these little Kirby cucumbers in the Korean veggie place for cheap. So what do I throw in there to turn them into pickles? Do they have to soak for a long time? Is it a pain in the ass? Should I just keep buying the Batemte from ShopRite? I suppose I could Google this but that's a lot of work.

Mall is open 24/7 unless there is a construction issue, and even then there is usually an alternate route thru to the PATH.

In all my MANY nights of late night travel from Newport PATH to Hamilton Park, I've encountered neither creeps nor weirdos.
(though I likely qualify as BOTH )

The link says no firearms, but nothing about slingshots or arrows! In my youth I once shot a squirrel out of tree with a bow. I was planning on eating it, but when I read about tularemia in the Joy of Cooking section on cleaning squirrel (old edition), I chickened out.

I haven't been harassed by squirrels in a few years, but it may have something to do with having a couple of young, aggressive cats. I've seen the more nimble of my cats actually chase the squirrels through the trees. They used to pull the blossoms off the zucchinis, the only thing I see them take an interest in is the grapes, but there's way too many grapes for them to make a visible dent.

We are all been taken for a ride...Do we recall how GoldmanSachs wanted a new tax abatement and permits ?

They would have known long ago siht was about to hit the fan and scammed cityhall for these abatements knowing full well they were going to have to let staff go.

These financial intitutions that have survived have been doing everything in their powers or bribes, to shaft as many people and authorities so their fall from grace is cushioned. They lose a bit here there and win big in other areas.

Firearms.

But seriously, I love squirrels. They are actually quite good fricasseed over homemade egg noodles, with a little tomato, basil, and wine in the sauce. If only there were some really good way to catch and clean them. One of my students brought me some one year during hunting season. It was a revelation.

They are rodents, you know, and if their tails were bare like rats you would all abhor them instinctively as much as I do.

That doesn't mean I eat rats. You gotta draw the line somewhere.

This is another example of big government screwing the small business owner.

Anyone that has any knowledge of bed bugs knows that the tenants bring them into the unit either from old clothing, furniture, matresses etc.

This will especially hurt the rent control landlords.

the landlords can max increase rents 4% per year meanwhile heating has more han doubled recently, taxes over past 5 years up 40% , now these rediculous child bar laws and bed bug laws.

I see alot of landlords walking away from their buildings over the next few years if rent control restrictions are not ammended.

This happened to me a few years ago.

The city fixed the street and did some sewer maintenance. The plumber said that during the paving, my sewer line was damaged.

After the runaround for 2 months, I paid 7000 dollars to rip up a newly paved street to repair my sewer line.

It seemed like a fun idea to me when I read it, and no, I did not bother to check the math.
It just annoys me that we are giving more money to people that will just piss it away. Or sure the gov will buy the bad dept. off the banks, but when it's time to resell it, you can bet that the guys that are running it will be selling it below the market value to A) their friends or B) their own shell companies.
So in the end we get screwed again. Great!

Don't worry, the corrected, or rather revised NJDiver bailout plan will still give you enough money to get that flat screen tv out of layaway.

Although come to think of it, the way these assets were being valued by the investment firms, maybe every American's share of $85 billion really IS worth $425,000!

I love reading about how much exterminators charge for getting rid of bed bugs. Maybe there is a magic solution where you can pay lots of money and go around with one of those fumigation hoses and be done in 10 minutes. But I know from personal experience (in Hoboken, no less) that you just need to go to the bed bug guy in Harlem (I can look up the exact info if anyone needs it), spend $80, and follow his advice to the T. Then you wash ALL your clothes and bedding in hot water. You vacuum and dust the whole apartment and then you apply the chemicals to every nook and cranny of your apartment. When all was said and done, I had spent 3 days on eradicating those little bastards.

With the 2nd step dust sprinkled around my apartment, they never came back. And I never heard about them moving to my neighbors' apartments either. I had told the landlord that we had them, he sent over one of those roach fumigator guys, which of course didn't work. And so I took matters into my own hands. If they had spread, since I had been upfront about it, I (hoped I) was not going to be held responsible.

I disagree with your assessment that this was not well thought out. This ordinance has been worked on and well researched for 8 months now and is based on Boston's bedbug ordinance.

I don't have the final version of the ordinance as it was changed during the Council meeting last night, but what the JJ has left out is the strong shared responsibility of tenant and owner in this ordinance. The papers don't always tell the full story so it is really important to get the full story, come to meetings, call the Mayor's legal department or Mayor's action Bureau or your Council person. This is a very complex issue.

The part the papers neglect to talk about is that the City's Health and Human services division will be setting policy on how to treat a bedbug infestation and they will be educating both tenants and landlords alike on how to handle infestations. I believe it is absolutely dead on to make sure that this is a collaborative effort to stop infestations as soon as possible so as not to spread causing further damage and misery.

Ask the City Clerk's office for a copy of the actual ordinance and do a little research online and you will see it is consistent with every major City to protect both landlords and tenants. This ordinance is not intended to punish anyone, especially not good landlords.

Althea

I agree with you this ordinance isn't thought out -- if the city wants to get it under control -- it needs those living with infestations to work towards that goal by getting rid of beds etc.

I doubt even a few treatments by landlords ($600 x 2 =$1200) will do anything without getting rid of infected mattresses and bedding too.

Someone should have read up on bedbugs before drafting and/or voting for this ordinance. Don't get me wrong, I do think it should be at least half on the landlord, but you need to get the tenants to do their part to solve an issue like this or you just won't solve it!
