agreed. If we are lucky, he will be involved for the fore-seeable future. he is young, motivated, sharp, and has the right intentions. we need more people like him and less of the others on the city council. If you are ever in need of a good laugh, I recommend a city council meeting. Comedy writers could not create some of the comments from our city council members.

Need an electrician to install an electrical outlet or two
Newbie
Newbie

Just bought a new electrical stove and dishwasher for my condo, which hasn't been renovated since the 80's. Sears dropped it off today and went to install the stove only to find that there's no outlet behind the stove, the damn thing is hardwired into the wall. So I need to have an electrical outlet installed in it's place (haven't checked yet to see the if the dishwasher is hardwired as well).

Any suggestions for good electricians who do such small jobs?

Re: Rear Addition - Neighbors Windows?

How much you can build depends on the depth of your lot and the coverage of the existing structure. There are very specific rules about this and the zoning dept is the right place to get them answered. If you're building already covers too much of the lot, the only way you can build your addition is by getting a variance.

Also, if your addition can be seen from the street, you'll need a certificate of no effect from Historic Preservation.

If you think you're neighbor's going to hate you for the addition, you'll probably have to go by the book.

I concur. He attended our new neighborhood association meeting (Liberty Harbor) and definitely had a lot of important things to share. I see him around a lot, definitely a class act in my book.

Dear JC Listers,

I have twice reached out to Councilman Fulop and both times I have received a response within 24 hours. I commend him for being so easy to access. He took the time out of his day to call me just now and discuss my issue. I feel that if you should have an issue please reach out to him. After moving here from Brooklyn and NEVER getting any help, he is a breath of fresh air. He cannot cure all the ills but at least he has an open ear.

I know they'd probably hate me, but if allowable, how much can they really HATE me?

Regardless, it only makes sense because if they put an addition up, and decided to add windows to the side, should that prohibit me from putting on an addition within 3-4ft of those?

It just makes sense that side windows shouldn't be protected....

Thanks for the replies...Anyone else?

Glad to hear they're sticking to it. I don't think that playground is a good idea. There's a good one at VVP, as noted a quick 2 blocks away.

Minus the police presence, I see that playground reverting to the lowest common denominator fast...

Your best bet is to check with the building dept.
Off the face of it, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to?

Good Luck

Rear Addition - Neighbors Windows?
Newbie
Newbie

I am contemplating purchasing a row house in Hamilton Park area, and putting an addition on the rear of the house.

It is a row house, and the adjacent house has windows on the side of it. If I extended, I would essentially be covering up the neighbor's side windows.

My question.....

Are side windows of row houses protected in this situation, or do I have the right to build being that they are attached rowhouses?

Anyone out there familiar with a situation like this?

Thank you,

Mitch.

Two uniformed officers have been planted in front of my building for a nice chunk of the afternoon -- I can see them from my window (and even hear their radios)!

It's been so refreshingly quiet over here lately.

From what I can tell, the hoodlums and drug dealers and thugs are beginning to retreat (or are at least in hiding for now).

Officer Daly has also been regularly on patrol -- often parking directly in front of the playground as a deterrent.

I met him for the first time the other day, and he seems really committed to reducing the loitering and cleaning up the block.

I've lived on Wayne Street for over 7 years now and I can't remember it ever being this good.

I sure hope it continues -- keep up the good work JCPD!

It's a WHOLE OTHER STATE! If you live here and work in NYC you HAVE TO pay NJ state tax.

While you do have to pay NJ state tax, a big plus of JC is you don't have to pay NYC income tax (which is pretty big, on top of NY state tax.)

I agree with skywarp. JC is very much like Brooklyn: a little Park Slope, a lot Bed-Stuy, some Downtown, a little Greenpoint...

Re: Neighborhood info of Grand St. @ Grove area

I live on the corner of Grove and Grand. The parking is not a problem at all, unless there is a function at the Boys and Girls Club. I think the noise can be pretty bad at times with the sirens, and trucks, etc. (Although, you will be moving in just after they paved Grand so the trucks are a little less noisy now without the potholes.) I also have to say that we have lived in our apt. for 4 years now (previously lived on Manila btwn 9&10th) and in the past year I am much more sensitive to the noise, but that is just b/c we recently just had a baby. I have always felt comfortable walking home from the PATH in the dark, although I'm not usually alone very late at night. I used to walk back from the light rail sometimes in the dark and that kind of creeped me out, but that was before the new apartments, so I'm sure it's a bit different.

I live on Marin and Montgomery(about 1 blocks away ) and I can answer the parking situation. I have had no problems find parking in the area even at times when I have had to come to work quite late (10pm). Marin can definitely be noisy at times especially since it's seem to be fire truck route.

If it is a basement apartment, be careful. I lived in 214 Grand, and it flooded every time we had a rainstorm. I knew of 2 others that left apartments in the area due to flooding problems. With all of the construction going on, there are a lot of trucks going up and down Grand St. They've recently started building the units in front of Gull's Cove. There's also a lot of ambulance noise since you're so close to the hospital. All in all though I don't think it will be any louder than where you are now.

Eleanor, I would disagree. I think JC has more in common with NYC than one of NYC's own boroughs. Heck, Jersey even has more of a claim to the Giants than NYC does.

Neighborhood info of Grand St. @ Grove area
Home away from home
Home away from home

My roommate has recently been discussing with me relocating from the Harsimus Cove area of JC (2nd St) to Grand St. between Grove and Marin. I'm pretty happy where we live already and although it's still downtown, there are plenty of things you can't determine until you actually live in a home and I want to make sure I know everything about that area before I commit to moving there. Any info that anyone can offer about the area is extremely appreciated such as how bad is the parking situation, street noise, violence etc. as well as any pros of the area in comparison to Harsimus cove. The only reason we'd be moving is to accommodate a friend who is without living arrangements. The apartment is bigger, but my rent would be increasing and I'm not really sure if this is worth it.

Thank you!!
