I am sorry about that, my apologies. Is just that we want to make sure that we have all of the facts in place before attacking animal control tonight at the council meeting. I hope that you could join us there tonight; we could surely use your support.
By the way for your information, the call that the police received last night was in the 300 block of NY Ave and the call was only about a cat out in front of the building. There was nothing mentioned about a stray cat being injured at that location. There it is as I mentioned, miscommunication.

Coster, I am deeply disturbed that you would think Cap'n John would lie about this situation...taking in an ailing cat and getting it the proper care. Why is there so much freaking pessimism? The JCPD systems are not perfect.

I am sorry, but I failed to mention the fact that the person I spoke to got all of the information directly from the system. So it is possible that the person failed to call the police or they filed the wrong information to the police or they live out of town. Take your pick or better yet, call the police technician yourself and than make your selection.

coaster - i dont know who you are - but neither my wife nor i hide behind anonymous screen names and post nonsense - and frankly - your attitude pisses me off.
to imply that we made this up?! are you f*ing nuts? Erin and i are still heartbroken - and it wasn't even one of our cats. since you feel the need to know everything. we live on new york ave in the heights we called the non emergency number, as did our neighbors. we repeatedly called animal control, and got no answers, as did our neighbors. and to imply we don't know how to deal with the cops shows how much of a twit you are. if you check any our posts, you see that we have dealt with the local cops a million times - and they are great with us in the heights. i'm glad you "strongly feel blah blah blah" i strongly feel you should shut your mouth.

This is totally outrages, so I decided to call the police to see it for myself and they told me that there were no calls made to them regarding any injured cat in Jersey City yesterday. So my questions here; did this incident really happen? And if did (I hope that it wasn?t Daisy) on what street did it occurred on? Did this incident happen in Jersey City? And if it did (this part is important to know), how was the call placed in to the police (i.e., stray cat in the yard, I am holding an injured cat, etc.)? We need to know all of the facts before coming to any conclusion especially if we are planning to complain to the council tonight otherwise it will make us look stupid or worse yet, they may think that we are just doing this in order to get this ordinance passed.
I strongly feel that the advisory committee should make recommendations to the city that they provide animal control with their own dispatch services 24/7 in order to eliminate the police dispatcher who may be working on a real emergency call (i.e., a shooting going on, a robbery in progress, etc.) at the same time which could cause miscommunications or calls not being properly dispatched to animal control. Already the advisory committee is off to a good start even before the ordinance is passed; the hiring of more animal control officers is a must, the creation of an animal dispatcher 24/7 is a must, how about better communication system, do they have shifts working around the clock? Do they have enough vehicles to do the job right; do they have an office that they could use 24/7? How can I get on this advisory committee?

The bad news is that the city street paving schedule is generally set a year or so in advance. They decide which streets in each ward will get paved in the spring/summer/fall paving season the previous winter. So barring a miracle you are probably out of luck for this year.
The best thing to do is to keep working with Fulop and the city to get your street on the next list. Organize your neighbors to contact Fulop, the Mayor's Action Bureau, and the Department of Public Works (I think that's the right city department).

Hi, We are having no luck in getting the city to pave 7th Street, which is riddled with holes, particularly between Monmouth and Brunswick. We have called and emailed countless times over the past several months and while the city and Fulop's team have agreed to help and usually acknowledge our pleas, no real action has taken place. Our house shakes dozens of times a day as trucks speed by and hit the bumps and indents in the road, and we are well on our way to sustaining structural damage to our house, as likely are others on the block. At this point, we are ready to call a lawyer. Does anyone have any advice on persons to contact, or recommendations for lawyers? Any advice would be greaty appreciated...Thanks. -- Su

You can pretty much bet the brunt of any property tax increases will fall on downtown owners. The more a person earns and the more expensive their home is basically inverse to the odds they voted for Healy (if at all).
What does he care if the yuppies get stiffed on property taxes, that's not his voter base. Plus it plays well with the populist theme going on around the country... My cynical 2 cents...

Also should be noted that even though Abbey's is grandfathered in, they don't allow indoor cigarette smoking in summer.

The light rail stop called "Liberty State Park" gets you to within probably 200 yards (or less) from the beginning of the running paths. Since the likely purpose of your running is exercise-based, I'd think that type of distance wouldn't be objectionable. MrGrieves - so you're the one! I run in the park at least 5 days a week, almost always in the mornings and until recently when the weather got nicer, would only see one or two other people. Is the Liberty Walk crowded? Yes - in the middle of weekend days. Weekend mornings up until 10 or so, evenings after 7-ish and weekdays throughout the day you shouldn't have any problems. Running in the park is such a treat - the park itself is a gem. It shocks me (and at the same time gives me perverse pleasure) how consistently empty the place is.

Exactly. All you need to do is look at Hoboken for a real world, very recent example (47% property tax hike last year.) Think about it this way - the city had what would have been a $50 million hole in the current budget if it weren't for a spate of large, non-recurring revenue items. On top of that, the city is expected to take on a larger share of school funding - increases on the order of $15 million to $20 million a year aren't unrealistic. That's a $70-ish million hole. I don't know the statistics on ratables - Yvonne knows that stuff well - but if you spread that $70 million across the ratable tax base, there's your answer. Well thought out mathematical equations with EQ ratios and other niceties aren't really going to protect anyone. The math is really much simpler: The city needs. The city takes.

Thank you for your compassionate response in helping this poor cat and bringing a humane end to her suffering.
Jersey City is mandated by law to have a 24/7 Animal Control response -- especially to after hours emergencies. The failure of Animal Control to respond is a longstanding problem. In 2006, members of LHS met with Health and Human Services Director Harry Melendez to address this problem. At the time, the system in place was that police would page Chief ACO Joe Frank and he would dispatch an officer. However, Frank would often fail to answer his pager and frequently, animals were left to suffer without any response. Melendez promised to put ACOs on a rotating "on call" schedule. However, obviously the problem still persists. This is why we need an Animal Control Comission. Mr. Melendez opposes the creation of this Commission. Yet sadly, Mr. Melendez is unable or unwilling to adequately address deficiencies within this department. It should not fall to ordinary citizens to help animals in distress. I would urge you all to use this tragic example to highlight to the Council why more oversight is needed and urge them to vote "yes" on the Animal Control ordinance. The vote is TONIGHT. Re: Please clean up your dog poop...

I took this from an article I saw on the web, sorry I forgot where. It would be great if JC were to have this level of enforcement:
Yes, it sounds like a ridiculous idea, and you may have been among those who laughed, or worse, when we first proposed it: In order to keep a city?s streets clean of dog poop, require dog owners to submit DNA samples from their pets when they get licenses; then use that DNA database to trace any left-behind poop and send the dogs? owners stiff fines. Well, it took three years but the Israeli city of Petah Tikva has actually put this plan to work: The city will use the DNA database it is building to match feces to a registered dog and identify its owner. Owners who scoop up their dogs? droppings and place them in specially marked bins on Petah Tikva?s streets will be eligible for rewards of pet food coupons and dog toys. But droppings found underfoot in the street and matched through the DNA database to a registered pet could earn its owner a municipal fine. It is interesting ? and probably wise ? that Petah Tikva has coupled the penalties with rewards. Clearly, their plan is a bit more thought-out than ours: ?My goal is to get the residents involved, and tell them that together, we can make our environment clean,? said Tika Bar-On, the city?s chief veterinarian who came up with the idea for the DNA experiment. Bar-On said the DNA database could also help veterinarians research genetic diseases in dogs, investigate canine pedigree, and identify stray animals, replacing the need for electronic chip identification. As for me, a New York resident: well, I am still waiting, and not so patiently. It still astonishes me that the same person who will glare at someone for speaking loudly on a cell phone or for not putting a bottle in the right recycling bin will let his dog defecate in the middle of a grassy area in Central Park where kids play, and then do a minimal cleanup, if at all. Unless we can get the DNA plan rolling here, I may have to start agitating all-out for mandatory dog diapers.

the police said call animal control. who had apparently been called for hours already, to no avail.
the only vet of the dozen or more that was called (even those with 24 hour numbers) that was available was in Lyndhurst. So we went there. the cat is now resting peacefully in kitty heaven.

Abatements are tools to encourage development. This tower is already built; no encouragement is needed to get the developer to invest. The majority of the investment has already been made; if they stop work now, the developer will be walking away from a 80 to 90 percent completed building having already spent the vast majority of the capital. They are already on the hook for their current PILOT payments. This is not at all like the Monaco towers or the Journal Square towers that had not broken ground, where revised abatements were used to ensure that the projects continued to move forward, and in the case of Monaco, to move forward within a specific timeline.
