Iwitness is correct. Here's some more about what's next.
"Reached this afternoon, City Clerk Robert Byrne confirmed that Vega is stepping down only as Council President but retaining his At-Large seat. He says that the council can either continue to function with At-Large councilman Peter Brennan running the show as Council President Pro Tem, or the council could elect a new president altogether. As for Kenny?s seat, the council can vote to appoint someone to fill it within the next 30 days; that person would serve an interim term until the November 2010 elections. If the council can?t come to an agreement on who should be appointed, the body could in theory continue to operate as an eight-person council until next fall as well." http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/ ... finally-steps-down-kinda/

So if "this decision was the right move for our city and our people" why wasn't it the right move 74 days ago? What were (are) you afraid of Mr. Mayor?
Governor Corzine - clearly our city is not being run with the best interests of the people in mind. What are you doing to fix this ungovernable mess??

Calm down, folks. It appears he's only resigning his position as City Council President.

I'm assuming Vega resigned from the council altogether, but the story (and Healy's quote) create doubt as to whether he only resigned from the Presidency or the council.

You are right IWitness, wording was a little unclear coming out of city hall. But Vega resigns ONLY his council president position; NOT his at-large seat.

Stepping down from the City Council, or from his position as Council President? The way Healy's statement reads, it sounds like the latter.

Breaking news out of City Hall. ?Mariano Vega has resigned from his position as Council President today effective Friday,? Mayor Jerramiah Healy says in a statement. ?We believe this decision is the right one for our city and our people, and we will work with the governing body to focus on the business of moving this city forward with honest, open and effective government.? Healy adds that as a result of his guilty plea today, Ward B councilman Phil Kenny has also forfeited his seat. ?I am just as stunned as everyone by this news,? Healy says. ?I had always known Phil Kenny to be an honest person who was dedicated to his city and his community.? http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/ ... ano-vega-finally-resigns/

Also, no arrest, no perp walk, no complaint, just silence until pleading guilty? He must've been talking to the FBI. Wonder what he disclosed.

Like I've said before, paying Vega off only buys one vote. How many councilmembers have been voting yes on those sweet deals for developers again?
I'd prefer one fell swoop but one by one gets it done just as well. And don't forget, November 3rd is less than a month away with a neck and neck race between Christie and Corzine. Next couple weeks could be interesting.

I'm thinking is a white guy with a short haircut that has a untucked button down dress shirt on? Seems to me that is just any white man from age 20-40 that has a white collar job. If they were wearing skinny jeans than you would all be up in arms about Hipsters. If they were wearing jerseys and fitted hats you would be calling them thugs. I ask you jclist. What is the acceptable form of dress for a man age 20-40????

I totally agree with you. A lot of people just don't know what they are talking about. I happen to be German and have taken my German language group there on several occasions and everyone agrees it's pretty damn close to an authentic biergarten. Yes the sausages aren't quite the same as you would find in Germany, but all of the Germans I've spoken to think the sausages a pretty good none the less. And french fries are on par with German french fries being that you can choose to eat them with mayo if you wish. If you want to go to German restaurant then go to Zum Schneider. But a biergarten of this size is not going to be able to prepare an extensive menu. And you will find a similar menu at biergartens in Germany. If you don't believe me then check out the menu on this website from a biergarten in Berlin which is similar in size of Zepplin Hall (click on Beergarden to see the outdoor menu): http://www.pratergarten.de

I agree it's an interesting human interest piece, but like others I found myself looking for something that wasn't there. For better or worse, most editors who assign items like this are looking for lightning rod issues (in this example it could be immigration law vs. a woman having to forgo her career in order to live in the US with her husband, and the "injustice" therein) to make it interesting. The author and subject seems to be happy, and the point of her story is simply that her biggest adjustment to her new life is how to deal with an excess of time - something as new to her as her new home.

I think it's an interesting social piece. I have quite a few visa holding coworkers and friends in similar situations and even know a stay at home husband in this situation. Some of the spouses don't know the language well and that is an additional barrier to making friends and fitting in here. Some have chosen to have children since they can't work anyway. Others jump passionately into hobbies. And some have returned to their home countries choosing to live apart from their husbands for awhile in order to pursue their careers. Thanks for posting.

That is probably an Indian thing. Husbands in India (normally) dont carry the keys to their abode when they go to work since they know their wives (I'm referring to housewives here) are at home to welcome them. Apparently, there is nothing more fascinating for the man than ringing the doorbell and the wife opening the door with a big smile, a hug, a kiss and a steaming cup of tea! That intimacy is supposedly not there when the husband uses his own key. Many times, the husband doesnt even have to ring if he drives to work, the sound of the arriving vehicle is enough

Jersey City Councilman Phil Kenny pleads guilty in massive NJ corruption case
By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal October 06, 2009, 12:50PM Jersey City Councilman Philip J. Kenny pleaded guilty in federal court in Newark this afternoon to accepting $,5000 in bribes as part of the massive New Jersey corruption case that broke over the summer. Kenny, who represents the city's West Side, Ward B, hadn't been charged in the original roundup of suspects. In pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right, Kenny admitted that in March he met with a government informant posing as a developer wanting to grease the wheels for a fictitious development project on Garfield Avenue. Two meetings were cited -- both in Jersey City restaurants and both attended by Kenny, the informant and an unnamed "Jersey City Official.'' At the first meeting, Kenny agreed to accept $5,000 broken down into two $2,500 contributions from "straw donors'' for his Friends of Phil Kenny war chest in exchange for future official favors in getting zoning and other approvals. At the second meeting, he accepted the money, knowing it was illegal to do so. Kenny is out on $55,000 bail until his Jan. 12 sentencing when he faces 12 to 24 months in prison. Kenny has been in office only since the spring. He was appointed to the Ward B seat on April 6 after Councilwoman Mary Spinello resigned, just weeks before the May 12 election. She had left to head the Jersey City Parking Authority, and the council voted to replace her for the short stretch in what some deemed an inappropriate attempt to give Kenny the "incumbent'' advantage come Election Day. Kenny ran on Mayor Jerramiah Healy's ticket and was elected on the first ballot. Before Kenny's appointment, Council President and fellow Healy running mate Mariano Vega sang his praises. "He's been a strong activist for a long time,'' Vega, who has since been charged in the corruption sting, said. "It's an appointment of someone I think people can trust.'' In addition to his council post, Kenny is the office manager for Hudson County Board of Freeholders and has been a state Democratic committeeman; West Side ward leader for Obama presidential campaign; trustee of the Lincoln Park Little League, and an usher and Eucharistic minister at St. Aloysius Church in Jersey City. He is the sixth person -- all from Jersey City -- to plead guilty in the sweep that netted 44 men and women from New Jersey and New York on a variety of charges that ranged from political corruption to the sale of body parts. On Sept. 24, unsuccessful Ward C candidate James "Jimmy" King pleaded guilty to accepting bribes from a government informant posing as a developer. Before that, former Jersey City Housing Authority commissioner Edward Cheatham, former Hudson County Superintendent of Elections investigator Denis Jaslow, and former Jersey City municipal employees Maher Khalil and Guy Catrillo also pleaded guilty to their roles in the scandal.
