There is no reason to ban small aircraft from flying the Hudson River VFR.

Do you know why this story has made front-page news and dominated the cable news shows all day? Because accidents like this are so very, very rare!

From Newsday:

"The skies over the river are often filled with pleasure craft, buzzing by for a view of the skyline.

Crashes happen every few years. New York Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle and his flight instructor died when their plane hit a skyscraper while flying a popular sightseeing route over the East River in 2006."

I think the reason this "made front-page news and dominated the cable news shows all day" was because 9 people died and because there was great film of the accident. We are lucky a lot of people on land also didn't get killed because of these deadly joy rides - ban this activity around heavily populated areas - and ban air shows in these areas too.

Cars kill people. Ban them.

"Illegal" basements should be legal as long as proper notice is given that the space is not up to code.

Yeah, that's what'll improve our city - lowballing salaries so that even less talented/qualified people carry out City business.

That said, there are plenty of unqualified people earning far beyond what they should because of political connections/patronage, etc. And those folks should be bounced. But to broaden that and suggest that no full-time, professional, department-head position of a city of a quarter-million people should make more than what a lot of people on JCList's secretaries make? Well, that's certain to lead to getting what we pay for.

Lowball them to zero.

A lot of JCList's secretaries make > $100,000?

A1 Deli - rude service?

I decided to try the A1 Deli because of good reviews on Yelp. I enjoyed the food but received snotty and rude service on a Friday night. Has anyone received similar experiences or should I give them a second shot? Thanks.

No one is getting "crooked" when two people willingly engage in a transaction. The more government gets involved in these transactions, the worse off we will be.

Both the owner and the renter want handouts, and neither are right. Real estate should be sold for and apartments should be rented for their market value. No one should have a right to live anywhere when they don't own the property.

Who's the guy on Central Ave near the Parking Authority who yells at people not to put coins in the meters right before the street sweep?

anchovial,

The market is not always right. But that doesn't mean the government is right. When the market isn't right, those businesses should fail, not be propped up at our expense.

Point is that we need less hybrids, not more.

The Fed is a hybrid - just like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac... how did that work out?

Xerxes,

Think there may be a small conflict of interest there? :) This is why the Fed needs less centalized power over our economy, not more. Goldman could only take advantage of us with the Fed's support.

How will Jay-Z affect the type of crowd that shows up? I was at Rock the Bells and it was rough. However, there's a lot of indie bands for people to get through if they are only going for Jay-Z.

Why is it bad if Whole Foods puts smaller stores of out of business? My father owns a small business and it competes with BIG business. If the big business puts him out of commission, so be it - people vote with their dollars.

T-Bird,

Krugman lost all credibility regarding economics when he promoted the real estate bubble after the tech crash, and then denied doing so this year. Keynesian economics doesn't work.

Anyways, guess who Obama's 2nd biggest campaign contributor was? Goldman. Shocker.

On the other hand, it takes subsidizes rent from other taxpayers. Why is that fair?

Also, it limits the long-term potential of the area.

Drugs aren't natural? Are they a recent phenomenon?

Regardless of whether we like drugs or not, it's far more counter-productive to spend money to investigate, prosecute and incarcerate drug users than to simply let them use. And it kills the whole black market thing.
