Re: Newport Vacancies Rising?

If vacancies are rising, why is it happening? Is the cost of rent there outpacing the economy?

Right now there are only about 2 blocks in the entire city that can get Fios (and those blocks are in the Heights).

I have been riding the Path daily for the past 3 years and not once have I ever had the need to discard anything. Like others have said, the people who litter will do it anyway whether garbage cans are there or not.

Oh, right. I was thinking $300/month.
The area around Washington St. seems tough for street parking. I'd probably go with the garage.

I'm already tired of all the Favre retirement coverage. Sportscenter at 11pm last night spent the first 15 minutes of the program talking about him. The guy only won 1 superbowl and only made it to 2 total in 17 years of play. Not exactly a legacy.

300 bucks doesn't seem worth it for a non-resident permit if you have the option to park in a garage for 175. With the garage you don't have to deal with street cleaning rules, lack of parking spots, and other nonsense like that.

I really think Verizon is better than Comcast - on all fronts.

I have Verizon DSL and their local phone service.

The problem with DSL is that it doesn't work in all areas. Verizon sold me DSL 2 years ago. I hooked up the modem and got really shoddy service. So I called them back and they said I was too far from the central office and that my address was not eligible for DSL service. They didn't know why I was sold the service to begin with. So I had to go through the whole process of cancelling and returning the equipment. What a waste of time. Once FiOS becomes available I will be switching.

You need to show them your current lease and a utility bill to prove residence. They also made a copy of my driver's license but did not check the registration, so it probably doesn't matter that the car is registered in CT - just don't let your insurance company find out ;)

If you rent a parking space in the Newport Mall garage is it an assigned spot or first come first serve along the Marin gate? Has anyone ever had any bad experiences parking their cars there, i.e. key marks, more than the usual garage-parking door dings or break-ins?

You can park anywhere in the entire garage. There are no assigned spots or designated areas to park in. I have been parking there for about 2 months and have not had any problems. I would consider it safer than parking on the street.

I normally use the cleaners at Pavonia & Erie. They always do a good job for a fair price. There is a new cleaners that opened at 10th & Manila but I have not tried them.

I would imagine they have someway of tracking who doesn't belong, but I think it would be difficult to identify who was a paying person, and who was a monthly.

They do keep track of when you swipe your card in and out. I was having a problem with my card and they looked on the computer and knew exactly when I last entered the garage. I'm surprised your card allowed another car in if your car was already in the garage. Good to know for when my girlfriend is in town I can let her park there.

I started parking in the mall garage in mid-January. It is indeed $85/month and you have to show a copy of your current lease and utility bill for proof of address. The only annoying thing is you have to go into the office at the beginning of each month to drop off your check. I don't think there is any way to mail a check nor can you use a credit card.

Call the JCIA: http://www.jciaonline.org/contact.php

If it still works you may want to consider donating it to the Salvation Army or goodwill store.

Unless you have a very complicated tax situation I would recommend doing the taxes yourself. You will save a lot of money on tax preparation fees. With all the software out there like TurboTax you really don't need to know anything about tax laws and the software is very intuitive and easy to understand.

As Brewster points out above, we went from having 10+ hours to place garbage on curb (7Pm until 5AM+) to having minimum of only 3 hours (7PM until 10PM is beginning of pickup). This is unreasonable as many persons working different shifts have only this 3 hour window now.

This problem just doesn't seem that hard to solve. I can name at least 5-10 other people in my building or on my block that would be willing to drag a garbage can 3 feet from the house to the curb at an appropriate time.

The same type of leakage problem occurs at the Newport Path station too. It has improved a bit over the years but the problem still exists.

Light Rail to Atlantic City? That would be an awfully long ride! If anything they might eventually have a regular NJ Transit train that goes direct from Hoboken or Secaucus.

I honestly have no complaints about Comcast's internet service - never had a problem in over 3 years. I do agree their TV service is horrible. I dropped them 2 years ago in favor of Directv and never looked back.

Does anybody know where to get those ear covers that men wear - the ones that wrap around the back of your head? I have looked all over and can't find them.

And even when people do clean up the crap they still leave smears of it all over the sidewalk. So even though there is no actual pile there it is still gross and I have to play hopskotch to avoid it.

If that's true, that would mean that nothing will be done about illegally parked cars after 8pm.

The building I live in is a brownstone with 4 apartments that range from 1200-1400 (all 1BR's, approx 600 Sq ft each, the $1400 apt has about 1000 sq ft). We are near Hamilton Park and Newport mall. Utilities are not included. I would assume rents near Van Vorst would be similar in price.

My impression is plenty of people would walk, bike across the Hudson right into Manhattan if given the choice/opportunity.

We had this discussion here a while back. It won't ever happen for obvious reasons.

Namely, it would be incredibly expensive to build a bridge that long. And it would have to be high enough for ships to pass under when going up the Hudson. It just isn't practical for the area.
