Has that REPLACED the old Deli-Plus or is it another location?

Re: HUGE GAS LINE COMING? Companies look to run natural gas pipeline through Jersey City
Home away from home
Home away from home

Thank you guys for posting the excellent links. It was welcome to us who could not be at the meeting. I think Marcie's presentation focusing on Newport was the strongest.

The speakers presented clear and obvious reasons why the pipeline must NOT be routed through Jersey City and unless the FERC process is completely bought and paid for by the spectre of Spectra, the route will be changed.

But that is a big "unless."

What we can all learn from this exercise is that IF the JC pipeline route is approved then there is really NO corporate demand that can ever be stopped by any "official" means whatsoever. Perhaps it might eventually come to actual bodies in front of bulldozers and national press on a day to day basis for weeks or months. Shades of the 1960's.

I was surprised that nobody drew attention to the oft repeated statement "and then it will continue under the turnpike" as if that were an innocuous place to put it. I remember garbage pile fire that broke out under Interstate 78 two decades ago. That wasd only a mound of garbage but it knocked out a major part of the Interstate system for almost a year. Imagine an immense superhot gas fire destroying the turnpike extension, perhaps having sections falling onto the housing below.

Does anyone know when we can expect a ruling from FERC?

Did Lefrak pick up all or most of your costs? Did the exterminator do most of the work or was it all laid on your head?

They added an UPDATE to the 60 Columbus Story:

Quote:
As a precautionary measure, we have engaged an exterminator to conduct an investigation on the, 18th, 19th, and 20th floors at 60 Columbus tonight beginning at approximately 6:30pm. The primary method for detection is a trained canine who will be accompanied by a handler as well as a Related employee. So, please do not be alarmed if you should see them walking the floors.

UPDATE: We're all clear! >>

Whether that means they are all clear NOW, or were all clear THEN is not specified. Or whether the "We're all clear" is meant just to reassure the people who have spent several to many millions for their condos...probably the most espensive post-war apartments (that WW2 , there have been so MANY) in New York.
The panic must be palapable, espercially for someone looking to unload a 5 million dollar apartment.

THe article confused me. Should I take it to read that RELATED found bedbugs at ONE headquarters, on 55th Street a couple blocks South, and thus for some unexplained reason they thought they might therefore have an infestation at the nearby Time Warner Center, 60 Columbus?
Or does RELATED have offices in both?
The addresses are confusing...I think 80 Columbus includes the the Mandarin Hotel, again a transient population. I think the accepted addresses for the two condo towers are 80 and 25 Columbus Circle.

yes, www.bedbugregistry.com is a very good suggestion.

They definitely ARE. They have paid a consulting company owned by Healy's niece $200,000 to set up a study designed to analyze various competing methods of DOING SOMETHING.
When her work is completed, the results will be handed to a relative of Gaughin's to field test the possibility of DOING SOMETHING. Cost of this much more expensive field testing is yet to be determined.

A flowsheet of methodologies to implement DOING SOMETHING is expected around 2014 when it will be submitted to the full City Council for evaluation and a decision about implementation costs; this of course will be subject to feasibility studies to be arranged.
Several relatives are interested in the contract.

If this all fails, Healy's niece is planning on a study of REALLY DOING SOMETHING.

Of course, since all these studies are expensive, a real estate tax hike is expected. Vega's cousin will draw up the needed feasibility study for the tax increase....$120,000.

Re: NEWPORT BEDBUGS
Home away from home
Home away from home

Newport specifically has changed from a housing project/development with a relatively stable population of citizens to one with a large proportion of non-citizen visa-workers, mostly from India and China, but from many other places as well, who regularly travel back and forth. Their job assignments are often only a couple years duration so the population has become transient. The more NEW people moving into a place the more likely one of them will bring unwanted guests with them.

To me the term "their" or "our country" refers to the country of citizenship. That's the way the term has always been used and that way seems to make sense.

This should not be a blame game...the bugs are already here, but rather what can be done about the status quo and the status moving forward.
But it is all important to isolate and treat infestations. I doubt that the landlord is doing either. Instead Lefrak is keeping everything under wraps which may benefit THEM but not the unwary tenants, old and new.

In the absence of information, we must keep one another informed and that is why I started this thread.

So if you know specific info about Newport bedbug sightings, let us know.

(I'd have also used the NWA website, but it moribund unto the point of death.)

NEWPORT BEDBUGS
Home away from home
Home away from home

For Newporters who come into the JCList, let's use this thread as a place where we can trade information about bedbugs whether in the rentals or the condos.
I know that Lefrak will be totally silent on the subject and would prefer that our first clues as to the danger will be our awakening some morning with suspisioud itchy bites.

A friend in the Thomas Jesfferson told me there was an outbreak on the higher floors including his apartment. I have seen several discarrded mattresses whose seams were covered in red and brown spots and crusty exoskeletal remains. These were deposited next to the dumpsters aside the George Washington.

I talked to our exterminator about extent of infections, and methods employed to combat them, but he seemed deliberately vague.

I don't have them and I don't want them but with the endless stream of transient South Asians with their bevy of suitcases going back and forth every holiday, I think the infections can only spread.

Do you know anything? Can you think of any suggestions to get management out of the DENIAL stage and face reality...I know, rhetorical question.

Home away from home

Developers REGULARLY renege on promises made to make their development sound good. Politicians are in on the wink-wink-nudge-nudge and are well paid to ignore the stipulations.

Newport was given free land and $40 million of city money with the proviso that 25% of the developement, housing, mall, corporate, retail etc. would be owned by Jersey City in perpetuity.
Bret Schundler gave that share back to Lefrak-Simon.

Promises are easy.

The 100 steps problem is an easy one if there was will on the part of Jersey City. The City should just cancel its tax abatement because of breach of contract. The steps would be in by Labor Day.

Jersey City IS, WAS, and WILL BE for a long time a cabal of Mob, "Developers," and Crooked Politicians. The pattern of how they conspire to loot the city hasn't changed in 80 years.

Re: HUGE GAS LINE COMING? Companies look to run natural gas pipeline through Jersey City
Home away from home

So, by means of distillation of facts presented: approval of the pipeline through Jersey City by FERC is a certainty and the only force to stop it AFTER that is Barak Obama's intervention.

I see no likelihood of either happening, no matter what anyone in Jersey City does, says, or writes.

I DO think perhaps judicial intervention on the basis that there is no BENEFIT for those who must bear the RISK and thus FERC's rubber stamp approval is contrary to law...but we are talking about a huge expense in taking this through appeals courts and even the Supreme Court.

After Regan, Bush, Clinton, Bushette, and Obama, there is very little regulation left to stop a corporation in its pursuit of profit. DEregulation has been and is the rule and thus there is nothing left for the public to battle with.

Do you think ANY communities in New Jersey want an immense gas pipline running near their houses but here we are with one abutting the Kill van Kull? That is a LOT of NJ people who have had their wishes thwarted by Big Gas.

Tilting at windmills burns a lot of calories but accomplishes little else. And this is one FRACKING big windmill.

No matter how fancy or how many screws are tightened or how much brass is polished, there is no such thing as a perpetual motion machine. Making matters even sillier is the concept of TAKING away energy while having the engine run in perpetuity.
If it had a name this gadget would be Perpetual Motion PLUS.

But that never stops yet another generation from passsing off an even glitzier fake, and those with no knowledge of physics fall for it every time.

There is nothing revolutionary about magnetic induction and conductors rotating through magnetic fields...EVERY motor and generator runs this way. BUT, as MDM, correctly points out, the Laws of Thermodynamics demand that there is ALWAYS more energy inputted into any device than can be taken out.

Thus, you put in 3 BTU's of coal energy to spin a magic wheel and it gives you about 1 BTU of electicity... IF you've designed your boiler and generator well.

Re: Newport Mall Movie Theaters are disgusting

I'm amazed at the problems everyone has with the people at Newport Loew's.
Whenever I go, the place is practically empty and I can usually get a seat with nobody within 8 feet of me.

I have never had a seat with a missing armrest, albeit lumbar support IS absent. A pillow from home is a big plus.

Remember, Newport Cinema is 24 years old. Check out the Hoboken Clearview in 24 years and tell me what it looks like.

(I remember when the octaplex on 440 just opened (with ANNE OF A THOUSAND DAYS.) The place was gorgeous, new red carpeting, velvet everywhere...for a couple years and then YOI!
Time is hard on a movie theater.)

Hey, do you know many movie theaters that have a choice of 4 free senior movies every month? Newport does. (Maybe I shouldn't have said that!)

As far as Edgewater and Secaucus go, have you amortized the cost of your car lately?

Re: The Entire Board of Liberty Humane Society Just Resigned...

Thanks for the data surlyt.

It is interesting that the problem was caused by an operating deficit of $73k which was apparently in reserves, so no borrowing needed.

It is also interesting that a single salary of $80-90K was more than enough for break even, even increasing the reserve fund.

I would still like to know the combined salary of OTHER employees. If the total is something like $200k then it becomes rather obvious where the problem is.

All too often, non-profit's are charities of by and for the benefit of their employees.

Ms. Hopkins/Hopinson's? $90k would go far towards feeding cats.

I'm sure some retired cat lover would take the job for $40k and run the place as well as Hopkins/Hopkinson.

Interesting though, NO city money! Hard to believe.
I guess whatever happens then is Mr. Neu's call 100%.

Is the shelter a "for profit" operation?
How much is Joanna Hopkins, the Executive Director of the shelter paid? How much are her staff paid.
Is there an OWNER?
Are the Directors paid anything?

The money trail often reveals a lot.

An inference can be drawn from the statement that "O'Keefe accused management of running the shelter into the ground and said the facility lost $73,000 in the first half of 2010, forcing it to dip into its reserve."
What he is sayingis that the Board will not tolerate the shelter unless the shelter makes money every year.

If the place is a for-profit operation funded by the City, how much does the City give them every year?

Anybody know the dollars and cents of this.

(Yes, I agree there can be no such thing as a "no-kill shelter" where the number of animals increases week by week. The end-point is an infinite number of animals housed at infinite expense. A no-go!)

Jesus,

After 7 years there comes a point where condo owners become OWNERS who are responsible for the upkeep of a building.
These "owners" are thinking like tenants and blaming city inspectors and long-defunct developers of not taking care of their building.

Once you become the owner, there's no LANDLORD to blame, no city inspectoors to complain to becasue it is YOURS. Live in it the way you want and remember, if you see a waterfall indoors, it is YOUR waterfall.

Yes I know this building is in the most god-awful part of town, and theowners got the place for a song, but it is still time for them to step up, or sell out to someone who will.

Sight unseen, I will offer to any of these people the exact same amount they paid.

Sounds like a good start to me...except for the silliness of changing calendar years. (Remember the City that decided to call 11 months a year...and thus balance the annual budget?)

Jersey City is hamstrung becasue Bret Schundler has already sold off all the city assets...cannot do it twice.

There are too many cops doing nothing, too many firemen lifting weights and making lunch, and too many administrators getting in one another's way. Libraries have too many librarians and too few books.
Let administrators take public transit instead of city cars to lunch!

Dump 25%-50% of them, the city cannot afford such waste.

Bright Moment

You have conflicting options there. First you are saying that we need to "show FERC there is specific opposition."

But then you state that FERC's approval is likely a fait accompli becasue of corruption within the agency, an outcome that I do not doubt for a moment.

So what is the point of showing FERC ANYTHING?

If FERC approval is a given, is there an authority ABOVE them who can stop the pipeline. Can Barack Obama stop a pipeline through Jersey City with no viable use to Jersey City (or even New Jersey?) Can Lautenberg or Menendez?

If not, then we have ourselves a big gas pipeline and anything we do is likely a waste of time.

You might find this interesting. It speaks to the need for specific benefits to those who must endure an energy pipeline.

At what level must this be stopped? Apparently the owner of the land (Lefrak in part) or the mayor of the city cannot stop it. Can the governor of the state? Can the president?

Or is it an a priori GIVEN that a private comapny can do anything it wants as long as Congress has not expressedly forbidden it? Where did a single corporation GET this kind of omnipotence?

Often a single Senator can stop any project in his state by some sort of Senate "accomodation."

Oh, as for the location of the pipeline "between the A&P annd Target," is anyone aware that the last 3 water main breaks causing major disruptions downtown were PRECISELY between the A&P and Target? It seems the LEAST stable ground in Jersey City.

There are two parts to Van Reipen separated by the train cut. The East end behind the PATH complex is safe and EXTREMELY convenient for New York commuting.
I thought about that immediate area before settling on Newport because I feel PATH proximity is the primary reason for Jersey City living.

The Western side of Van Reipen, a block or two long is rather remotely located. Seems less safe, but I have rarely walked there so I am not sure, and it is a tortuous route to the PATH because of the need to get across those tracks.

Which side are you considering?
