As much as I am generally pro-development, she's not wrong.

Prato, as much as I love them, knew the zoning code before they signed their lease. They tried to skirt the code, got caught, and in normal circumstances should have attempted to receive an exemption to said code. There likely wouldn't have been any push-back for their indoor seating, but likely wouldn't have been able to get anything done regarding the back yard.

Instead, a sweeping (relatively) change to zoning code is being sought to solve one business's perceived problem. That seems overreaching, and is likely to piss off a bunch of homeowners with vested interests, and not for bad reasons.

Edit: I forgot about the pedophile argument. That was a fantastic bit of irrelevant fear-mongering.

Except you are perpetuating the myth that this ordinance is somehow in response to Prato. If you read the thread, you'll see the two are entirely unconnected. This ordinance was in the works long before Prato's situation.

I would say that is the most depressing part of the entire scenario. This terribly loose language is what the city came up with for the ordinance after how many months?

As one of the, what you referred to in another thread as,"poor bastards" who live above or across the street from these restaurants I have to say it really hasn't been too bad. During primetime Friday/Saturday nights we're typically out of the apartment and their doors are always closed before they start with the loud music inside.

The bigger problem is the car traffic when someone tries to double park and drop off their entire party. We'll see how things go as they have recently added a bunch more tables to the sidewalk, but the air conditioning units will be in our windows soon so I'm not anticipating too many issues.

Agreed! If someone could turn the defunct Michael's Pizza on 4th and Erie into a halfway decent bagel or donut shop they'd likely do very well. If I had the cash I'd have a donut shop a la Dough or Donut Plant in there yesterday.

I was told back in November that they were going to take over La Conguita.

Interesting. Thanks! The designer is the same who did Walters in Ft. Greene. Would be great if this place ended up with a menu similar to theirs.

Grove could use a higher end seasonal American spot. Thirty Acres is great for special occasions but not exactly something you could pop into when you have visitors in town, new Park and 6th feels too much like an upscale chain restaurant to me, and Skinner's entree menu is kind of an overpriced nightmare.

Potential Meat CSA for Jersey City
Home away from home
Home away from home

This is a re-post from jerseycityeats. Wanted to post it here as there are limited options for quality protein downtown. Carrino has some decent cuts but are pricey. Moloney's is a little out of the way for some.

It seems like this farm is willing to do a drop off downtown but needs folks to sign up.

"To arrange a CSA pick-up in Jersey City, the farm needs a group of at least 20 people to enroll. There have apparently been a couple of other inquiries into setting this up, but as of yet, nothing has come of it. The best way to express interest is to fill out the enrollment form and email it back to Julie at csa@herondalefarms.com. There is a ton of information about the CSA and how it works on the enrollment form if you'd like more details."

I don't think the goal is 30%, it's just a lot easier to get attention with a number like that.

A plan to permanently close Newark Avenue to traffic and parking from Grove Street to Eire Street was introduced with an emergency lane for deliveries and emergency vehicles down the middle one way West bound.

The businesses opposed to the pedestrian plaza include:
Skinners Loft
Dr. Siegel, Desai, and Savoy
Pharmacy
Grove Medical Associates
Fussy Friends
Tender Shoot Farm

I can understand why a medical practice would be opposed (no drop-off for elderly/infirm patients), but if a lane for delivery is included in the plan, why would businesses object? It's not like there's a whole lot of customer parking on that stretch of Newark to begin with, and foot traffic is shown to increase with these street closures, leading to more potential business.

Fussy Friends likely does a good amount of business in dog food and is making the assumption that folks are less likely to purchase if faced with carrying that same dog food 100-200ft to their car.

I was really excited to try this place. Went by on Saturday and it was PACKED, which is a great thing, but there was no seating available so I ended up leaving. Very nice person greeted us at the front, explained there was no seating but said we were welcome to stand at the bar, gave us menus to peruse. One weird thing though, there was an overwhelming smell of mothballs in there. Did anyone else notice that? I'm hoping it was a patron who just took their entire wardrobe out of storage or something, and and not part of the intended ambiance. Granted, I have a pretty sensitive nose, but it was really strong.

In any event, I'm excited to go back at a less busy time. Hopefully the mothball smell won't be there.

We went on Friday and had a similar experience - great drinks (awesome Sazerac), cool ambiance, terrible moth ball smell followed by a very strong fried burger smell. Not sure if they're having issues with their ventilation system or something, but hopefully that will be worked out sooner rather than later.

My guess on the mothball smell is the entire wall of old paperbacks that were likely sourced on the cheap (ie garage/church sales whose inventory typically comes out of basements and attics).

Some issues this morning with Path. It was "signal failure on Hackensack River Bridge", which caused delays in both directions on the NWK-WTC line. After this morning's commute, I have some concerns:

1. Wasn't the WTC line suspended on weekends for an entire year to remedy these types of failures on this line?

2. My train pulled into the track where the Hoboken trains normally pull into (the platform that's already finished with the white marble). I don't know if this is the normal circumstance, or if it's just not complete yet, but there was only ONE, very small staircase to get up the next level from the platform. It took forever for the hundreds of people to get up (the staircase is only about 2 people wide). Does anybody know if this is a permanent situation? It was really terrible, and considering the amount of money that was spent on this remodel, completely unacceptable.

Re:2 Over the weekend it seemed like work was happening on the level above the normal WTC -> NWK platform. They may finally be laying some flooring or even beginning work on the actual platform.

re: JC compared to Hoboken

You're comparing what are literally order of magnitude differences in city size (1.3sqm / 15sqm). I'm sure a more accurate comparison worthy of assessment would be all of downtown to Hoboken.

Willing to bet that they'll be packed from day one through probably the next 4-6 months. It's not like we're choked with new restaurants downtown. Porta, Kitchen at Grove Station, and BROA are all that have opened in the last 4 months; unless you count the move of Park and Sixth.

What's on the horizon? Raval probably next month, re-opening of Hard Grove and South House some time in the next 6 months(?) and Monty's in 2019.

This is my only problem with them, and it only really causes an issue in the summer when folks feel the need to congregate in their "backyard" space and drunk talk until late (1-2am).

Hate to break it to you, but I'm pretty sure the vast majority of the ad space on this board is made up of retargeting units.

"Behavioral retargeting (also known as behavioral remarketing, or simply, retargeting) is a form of online targeted advertising by which online advertising is targeted to consumers based on their previous Internet actions, in situations where these actions did not result in a sale or conversion."

ANOTHER accident at this intersection. Probably around 11:15/11:30ish. I drove past after the fact, looked like an Animal Control truck had T-boned a passenger car that was crossing Manila on 1st. Looked pretty bad, driver of car was trapped. I called 911 once I was able to safely pull over. Hope everyone is okay.

I used to walk across this intersection as well as 2nd and Marin a fair bit. My sense was that the typical driver up or down Marin tends to exceed the speed limit and is often oblivious of the "stop for pedestrian" signage and other signals.

I had a few exchanges with drivers who would honk, yell or glare if I would attempt to walk across Marin using the crosswalk in full view of the "stop for pedestrian" signage.

Part of it I think is just typical Jersey driving nonchalance and a sensibility that cars come before pedestrians. And that kind of thinking often means higher odds of t-bone collisions.

Most drivers seem to ignore the "stop for pedestrian" signage. A while back they put up those signs in all the intersections of Jersey Ave. Most people stopped initially but, as time went on, it went back to the old routine. I noticed most of those signs are gone now.

This. How much could these signs possibly cost? I'm unclear as to if they're being moved from location to location and why they can't simply be left semi-permanently in targeted areas.

In the short time I've been following them via social media, they seem to be much more community oriented than your average pizza shop.

Examples: winter pop-up market-http://instagram.com/p/vttKDeDRqW/

Then they ran a special with christmas trees: "Christmas trees arrive in the park next Friday! Come with an appetite, leave with a tree. ???????? 2 Margherita pizzas, a carafe of house wine or a pitcher of domestic beer and | a 4 ft. tree for $35 | a 5 ft. tree for $45 | a 7 ft. tree for $65."
