I agree, was going to queens on sunday about a few weeks back figured i take the path to 33rd then hop on the E train.

It took me almost 1.5 hours to get from newport to 33rd. When i got to the station it was already packed, still waited 30 mins, there was literally no space left to stand on the station. Then the train finally came, the young kids started cheering..until they saw every car was already packed to the grill. Some tried to squeeze on, people were yelling no space. I ended up waiting 2 more trains before able to get on, only to get stuck at hoboken for another 15 mins while jammed inside. Once i got to 33rd street, E train to forest hills was a breeze, ran like clockwork.

But what's the alternative? drive? that's even worse and cost more $$. I am just so glad right now i can just walk to work in 5 mins in newport. But once my family outgrows the condo, not sure what to do at that point.

Thanks! Wow. Considering the once prominent Forbes (who recently auctioned off loads of art, photography at Sotheby's for millions of millions of dollars) it's interesting how they are now moving to Newport, nondescript building of all places. I would have expected them to be in something with more of a story...

I truly don't want to beat a dead horse (this debate has been going on for a very long time!) but shut down the POS Pathmark; plenty of existing parking, already set up for a grocery store and is accessible by car to people that drive (next to the high way), accessible to people by light rail (by the hospital). That area is in some dire need of rehab and an anchor such as WF will assist with just that.

The best location for wholefood is the abandoned powerhouse by 2nd street and washington.

The location is perfect - accessible by all public transportation, and walkable from all surrounding highrises. In the idea world, jersey city will offer WF tax breaks/incentive and WF will renovate the powerhouse and move in. So the neighborhood can finally solve this long time problem and avoid putting another highrise there.

But it will never happen, because we are in JC.

I didnt know target was an asian food market back then, when I moved here about 8 years ago it was already target (i think). Doubt lefrak is trying to discourage asians, their entire rental is full of asians.

In regards to DTJCdar, i overheard a lot of people talking with the food ladies i guess they go here often and all know each other, all of them referenced where they are from. Also just look at the parking lot, lots luxury cars, somehow i doubt those asians live in greenville.

i went to the asian supermarket off 440 on a sunday and it was impressive, feels just like back in flushing's supermarkets with hot food stands along with all the asian food i am used to and fresh seafood/meat, all at an insanely cheap price (compared to downtown jc).

however to get there from downtown jersey city took more than 30 mins for 4 miles of driving!!!! the traffic was insane on communipaw to get on 440 and that's on a sunday.

I don't understand what's happening...but no amount of food is worth this aggravation. Also don't understand why they don't open up one of those supermarkets in downtown jersey city, most of the people who are shopping there are from downtown jc anyway.

Good store, horrible location.

what do you mean? the cop saw a dude walking in the middle of the street matching the description of a suspect who robbed the store. He pulls up to arrest him, the guy tells him to f*** off and he's too much a p***** to make the arrest. Cop draws the gun and warns to stand down or he will fire, the guy grabs the top of the barrel trying to wrestle the gun away. Cop eventually shots him after 2 failed attempt to fire, then radios backup for shots fired.

Everything is by the book, i see absolutely nothing wrong with what the cop did.

nah the mall is great for the area but i agree it's ridiculous that there is no easy way to to get to other side. Lefrak just needs to build a walk way through it so people dont have to zip zap through the park lot to get to hamilton park, and HP residents can enter the mall from their side.

Unfortunately it's against their best interest, as lefrak wants to keep everyone renting in newport, by building the walk way they will lose renters to hp area.

i think this is one of those cases, fulop and the government can really put some pressure on that company. If you want another tax abatement? then build the walkway!

what they need to bulldoze is that skeleton dump called power house!

why are you always so negative about progress and development? If you want jersey city to remain a dump like it was 20 years ago, just move to irvington or newark, otherwise deal with it, the steamroller is not stopping for you.

It seems that all of the new high rise construction both downtown and in JSQ is "luxury rental". As discussed elsewhere on this board, developers are choosing (or are restricted through financing terms) to construct rentals rather than condos. We see this from the Maddox and York at Warren to URL and the Majestic II across from City Hall.

If that is and continues to be the case, we might expect the glut of supply to stabilize rental prices downtown, but I would expect the impact on condo prices to be negligible since the supply of units to purchase is remaining static.

In fact, if more renters move here and decide they want to buy, the influx of newcomers might even drive condo prices up as demand increases but available inventory remains unchanged. I might be wrong on that point, but in any event, I can't see the flood of new rental inventory being a depreciative factor on real estate prices in DTJC.

This is accurate. In addition with all the new buildings it will bring in more retails making the area even more desirable.

My only hope is they do something with the power house soon, I hate staring at it out my window.

They should just make the outer lane straight only, because 2nd street is 1 lane only. If the outer lane car is making a left turn onto 2nd, they need to merge into 1 lane while turning, it is more accident waiting to happen.

Most times everyone knows to use only the left most lane to turn, but i have encountered few instances that the outer lane driver trying to turn as well, and most are **** going at full speed forcing the car in the inner lane to hit the break and allow them to merge while turning.

i like some of the reviews about the school

Quote:

DHS is an amazing school. There's nothing that you can't accomplish here. The size and population of the school is spectacular! The structure for education is clearly outlined in the schools mission statement. The teachers are genuinely caring and concerned for the student s future. Anyone that says otherwise is obviously not doing their part. If the state scores are low it s because they calculate the students from other countries that don't speak, read or understand English within these test. (Very unfair) Keep your nose clean do your work and you'll succeed. DHS has won many science awards and has beaten McNair, County Prep and high tech. It has won nationwide and also beat Bergen County. Do your research because DHS is awesome!

That kind of logic only makes sense when you are treating your patient as a science experiment. Is that what is happening here? Aren't there more effective ways of analyzing ebola than keeping a person in custody because you think she may or may not have ebola? I thought science has already progressed from that over the years. We had our chance to study ebola and we blew it. We removed funding from such research because we thought it did not concern us. State and local officials need to tread carefully because they are falling into the fear pit. If they really want science to solve this, leave it to the scientists and maybe they can find more humane ways to treat the problem.

So now explain to us the science of Christie relenting and agreeing to send her home. Is any of this really scientific or political? Smells like politics to me.

Re: Eminent Domain on Metropolis Towers

I rented there when I first moved to JC. It is absolutely the worst. The ceilings will always leak, I give up trying to repaint it afterwards. Apartments are roach infested. The carpets in the hallway smelled like vomit mixed with dead rodent. The walls are permanently infused with rotten curry smell. Alarms randomly go off at middle of the night. Elevators stop working during rush hour. Constant water pressure issues. Management nonexistent other than sending you letters to increase your rent. The doormans are all part of some union and treat the resident like sht. I remember every time I ask for my mail delivery, it's as if she's doing me the biggest favor, full on bitch attitude. And from my understanding there are some major contaminated soils right next to the building they are trying to remediate.

By far the worst building in downtown JC.

After my lease was up they tried to increase my rent...hysterical. They also took few hundred dollars from my security deposit because of the paint ( from the water leak ). It was worth it never have to step inside that shthole again.

The problem is while during incubation period you are not infectious, as humans we don't have built in digital alarms that goes off the second our body becomes infectious. Usually by the time you feel unwell, there is still a delay before you go take a temperature. And let's face it most people will try to tough through the discomfort of a fever until your body can't anymore.

It's wishful thinking everyone will be responsible and stay in their homes with minimum contact until the risk period has passed. we all know in reality that's never true. That moron doc has proved it. Now imagine someone without medical understanding and doesn't know even after they are symptomatic. A sneeze in a crowded subway will cause chaos, and even worse the fear that follows will do major damage to the economy.

While I agree with the nurse they should better prepared the containment housings, I absolutely disagree with her that they allow people from those high risk countries to roam free during incubation period.

Fully support Christie on his decision to quarantine until after the risk period, because the alternative is devastating...especially in high density areas like nyc and jc.

Hi all,

The GF and I are currently living in DTJC, specifically on Mercer and Barrow (one of my favorite blocks I've ever lived on). We love downtown, love the growth, neighbors, restaurants etc. Now normally this is pretty much meeting all the check marks for purchasing a home, but it feels like that spike has happened way before we were ready and aren't getting a lot of bang for the buck.

Thinking longer term, we are considering purchase a home in the Heights or JSQ area. GF works in the city so the JSQ PATH seems like a better choice, but I'm not very familiar with the neighborhoods, streets, safety, restaurants, etc. I know the Heights has that damn elevator, then light rail, then PATH... seems a bit of a pain. I drive to work so I'm not concerned.

We are willing to take a cut in the neighborhood amenities knowing downtown is the "hot" spot right now, but just want to have an idea of where we might want to look that has the big growth potential while also being a nice place to live, walk the dog, parks (dog park!), walk to eat, jog, etc.

Really appreciate the community's help here!

Don't move to the heights, move to JSQ by the path especially if you are buying not just renting. There is a massive inflow of cash coming to that area from the mayor's effort and the area is going to improve with future potentials both as a place to live and as an investment, with easy transportation next door.

Look for the saint johns condos (201/225 saint pauls, 10 huron), slightly cheaper you have the liberty condos (75 liberty ave), more luxury new construction you have the canco loft (although i don't recommend it, the value isn't there given the price and high condo fees, might as well just buy in downtown if you paying that kind of money).

I am always wary south of jsq path, seems shady. Maybe the area improved recently i haven't been there for a while. I would recommend north of jsq, it's the better/safer part with little india close by.
