Re: The Coffee Shop near Grove PATH

Not to hijack this interesting thread, but the Coffee Shop in union square is pretentious, overpriced, terrible service and mediocre food. Ok, back to the other Coffee Shop, which hopefully goes down a different path, 22 TV's and all.

Volunteering in Jersey City
Home away from home
Home away from home

I find myself with a lot of time on my hands temporarily. I would like to make good use of it by volunteering for something or other. Ideally, it would be academic in nature. I can either do this from home or go to a location within Jersey City. Does anyone know how to go about this?

Wow, have JC standards sunk so low that 40 minutes is considered fast? Actually, that's why I don't order from many places. It seems an hour or more is not unusual, particularly in little India. 30 minutes is standard in manhattan.

Obamacare, I'm so confused
Home away from home
Home away from home

I find it difficult making a choice about which insurance plan to go with. Is there someone to talk to in order to get advice?

I'm covered under COBRA for another year but the premium is expesnive ($585) and it's a mediocre HMO policy. I'm not sure how to compare it to the various packages that the 4 Obamacare comapnies are offering in NJ. I would not be eligible for a tax deduction.

For example, and this may be a stooopid question, but as typical with present HMO policies, I pay fixed amounts to see my primary physician and specialists. Would that be out the window with Obamacare and would it be strictly a percentage of the fee?

Hospital fees have a deductible and the insurance company pays the rest. Is that not true of Obamacare packages?

Anyway, I'd love to talk to an impartial specialist in these matters. Are such people available?

That being said, it looks like the restaurant is being featured on a show called "Restaurant Stakeout" on the Food Network this week, and their prospects sound... less than promising.

Here's the episode summary:

Willie swoops in to VB3 in Jersey City to come to the aid of two cousins that opened up a high end Italian restaurant a year ago. Chef Mike is running the kitchen with precision, but his cousin Joe is having difficulties operating the restaurant and managing an unorganized staff. Without Willie's help, the doors will close and the cousins' million-dollar investment will disappear along with their business.

Stakeout! I love Willie Degel! Uncle Jacks is a nice restaurant. I just watched the episode on TiVo. This guy Joe looks like a real dummy and appears never even to have worked the FOH let alone run it.

Having said that, the show is rigged and I couldn't disagree more with the premise. That is, the only way to run a successful restaurant is to spy on your staff 24/7. Anyway, it's great entertainment and nice to see a JC restaurant featured on Food Network.

Someone pointed this thread out to me. Antonicello is lowlife scum and is now, thankfully, a vestige of the Healy administration. Antonicello, as head of ACI, was the first management company for the condo I lived at. We were in the throes of chaos since the owners just took control from the developer. Bob took advantage every chance he could. Fortunately for us, we wised up fast and we watched him like a hawk and then fired him. I was not surprised when he filed bankruptcy over a paltry sum and then got an appointment by his apparent mentor, Healy.

Not the walk, which is a lot more conducive to running and walking but in the road. Granted, it's not many, but there are generally one or two runners in the road when I go biking.

While I don't think this is true for other runners, but today there was a guy with his shirt off (it was 55F), ear buds firmly implanted and oblivious to the world except that he seemed to want to be seen.

I changed my routes also and the path next to the road was part of many runs. And nothing beats the boardwalk unless it's the middle of a weekend day and it's crowded.

Runners in LSP

Home away from home

I know I'm gonna get flack from asking this but here goes. I'm mostly asking because I'm curious.

There are plenty of running trails/walks in the park. There's a track used for bicycling, Freedom Way, with bicycle lanes. I suppose the argument could be made the bicycle lanes are also running lanes. Regardless, I don't understand why people run on Freedom Way when there are so many more nicer spots to run without dodging cars and bikes and noxious fumes. I used to run and Freedom Way would be the last place I would wanna run. The only time I used it when the rest of the park was covered in snow.

What am I missing? Why do runners use this route? It can also be hazardous to bicyclists if there is a car coming.

Re: Buying iPhone 5s in JC

Home away from home

I called the Hudson Mall store. While it is a very low traffic store for iPhones (or anything), they've historically gotten limited stock from Apple and generally don't get the iPhone in all its incarnations, like all the colors and sizes. Strangely, they said they were taking reservations, something that is strictly against Apple policy. I called the AT&T store at the Newport Mall and they knew nothing of reservations. I could have been #10 but I passed. I'm going the internet route and will wait to get it until after I get back. Thanks for the responses.

I never cared about getting an iPhone the second it came out. But, I have off Friday and am going away next week and would like to have the phone. So, that's my excuse, haha.

Is there a place in Jersey City or nearby that there might not be a ridiculous line or a place you don't have to camp out at? I called AT&T in the Mall and I was told that lines typically start forming at 4am. Forget that. If such is the case, I'd rather order it on the internet.

Jury duty questions
Home away from home
Home away from home

I'm supposed to report tomorrow but I can't see where the directions state the time or which entrance. Will this be on the instructions when I call tonight?

More importantly, I screwed up. I forgot about jury duty and booked a flight to attend a friend's wedding after I rec'd notice... I'm leaving on Sunday. I completely forgot about jury duty until I rec'd an email reminder the other day. It will be no problem if I don't get called to sit on a jury (I'm a petit juror who can stand to lose a few lbs.), but if I do... I dunno.

Where do I park my bicycle?

Thanks.

Fire Alarm at the Foundry
Home away from home
Home away from home

The alarm is located in a number of apartments and goes on intermittently. It is incredibly loud and I'm sure it is above a healthy decibel level. It goes off for reasons unknown and has gone off in the middle of the night in winter at times.

Complaints to management do nothing. It is 3 years (at least) that this is going on. Others have complained.

The fire department is powerless. They have to come over whenever it goes off. The only advice they can give me is to talk to the alarm company. Obviously , it must not be a simple fix since the alarm company has been here many times.

But it's 3+ years now and I'm guessing they don't want to spend the money to fix it.

My question, other than legal action, do I have any recourse at all? Is there an agency that would cover this sort of thing?

What happened to Twan's food truck?

I haven't seen him parked on Merseilles before 78 for the past week. He's been there forever, probably the longest lasting food truck in JC. Nothing exceptional, i.e., Sabrett's hot dogs, but cheap and always good conversation. On one of my last visits he was was complaining about new rules enacted by PSE&G and the city. I hope he wasn't forced to move.

The restaurants are contractually required to offer the same prices as they provide on their printed delivery menus. In fact, many restaurants actually offer you 20% off your first order from them on Seamless, meaning ordering through Seamless is often less expensive than ordering over the phone. If for any reason you believe the prices you see on Seamless are not consistent, please notify us at care@seamless.com and we?ll reach out to the restaurant to make it right.

I had this happen to me. When I complained to Seamless about it, they apologized, and gave me a nice coupon. I would encourage those that have seen price differences, to do the same.

I'm a little surprised and it's the first I'm hearing about this rule. I've dealt with Seamless (as a restaurant) off and on for a number of years. No one ever told us we couldn't charge more than what we normally charge, though I never worked for a place that did.

I don't understand why restaurants use Seamless though. I read the article in the other post and there are plenty of alternatives. In Manhattan (and Jersey City), there's delivery.com among others. Other companies are making inroads. And jeez, you can almost always call the restaurant directly. Seamless requires you to buy a dedicated computer and printer in addition to their exorbitant fees. In the past, they didn't used to pay the restaurant until 60 days after the sale. I suppose there were a lot of gripes and they changed their policy to 30 days. In my personal dealings with them (from the perspective of a restaurant), I found them bureaucratic and a hassle to deal.

Seamless charges the restaurant a very high fee, much more so than delivery.com or other such delivery places. So yes, some restaurants have "special" menus for seamless. I have to think the vast majority do not change their price because it is bad business, but I can only speak about where I have worked.

Actually, it generally works the other way; delivery is generally cheaper for the restaurant because it costs the restaurant less than having you eat there. In any event, it's always best to deal with the restaurant directly if possible and cut out the middle man.

It is amazing that you chose to concentrate on THAT part of my post. You say things (not just in this thread) without knowing the full context. I see no need to justify my actions to you or anyone, but since others have seen fit to comment on this, I will explain. In any event, I value my life more than getting scolded on jclist. It was only after several years that I decided on the sidewalk route and ONLY on Pacific and Grand near the Pacific/Grand intersection. It has to be one of the most dangerous areas in the city for riding a bike. Drivers speed and go through lights and the cops do little to enforce the law until there is a serious accident, and then the law seems to be enforced for a short period. There are few and often no pedestrians on the walk and I am very cautious. I obey the traffic laws everywhere else. However, if I see grovepath waddling along, I may become reckless, haha.

It's really very sad and I hope she pulls through okay.

I wonder how many similar incidents go unreported though, at least by the press. Jersey City is really a nightmare for cyclists. I commute to the PATH almost every day. I'll never get used to drivers who seemingly intentionally try to come as close as possible just to scare me. I abide by the laws and common sense, the latter taking precedence. There are times I'll ride on the sidewalk (during rush hour on Pacific and Grand) because it's so dangerous in the street.

Re: Taxi fares
Home away from home
Home away from home

I'm referring to the white cabs at the Grove PATH on Columbus. And I avoid them like the plague; I only use them when I can't bike for whatever reason.

I have to say the fare up until the last 2 rides, with an occasional exception has been constant. It runs between 6.25-6.75 with minimal or no traffic to near Liberty State Park. It's been down as low as $6 with maniac drivers. I always pay $8 with tip unless there's extenuating circumstances. Therefore, I didn't lose anything the last 2 rides; I paid the same $8 since the driver didn't answer my question if rates went up.

The situation in general throughout JC is horrendous and you have to wonder who's getting paid off. One of my biggest gripes is that the cabs are filthy, often reek of cigarettes, are uncomfortable, rarely have AC, etc. And then there are the broken meters. And probably a dozen other things. I sympathize with the drivers; much of the problem is not their fault and they need to make a living.

Taxi fares

Did metered fares go up? Or are cabbies fixing their meters? I regularly take a cab from Grove St. to my apt, well once a week or so. With light traffic, the fare has always been within 50 cents. The last 2 times though it was $1 and $1.25 more with no difference in the route or anything else.

Edited to add... I asked the drivers on both occasions if there was an increase and all I got was a mutter for an answer.
