Right you are corybraiterman, A-1 has been closed for a couple of months. It wasn't long after that poor young man was killed outside their front door. When I worked downtown, I used to go there on a fairly regular basis & they were always pleasant. I was transferred & it was at least a year or so before I stopped in to purchase a coffee. The gentleman behind the counter stared at me through narrowed eyes for a moment then said "How have you been? I haven't seen you in a long time". Some people love to makeup stories.....makes them feel important.

Thanks.

I don't know anyone downtown but I HIGHLY recommend Kevin at Snip & Clip in Secaucus, next to Legends Diner on County Ave. Washes, clips & does nails. Great guy with a great way with his clients - 4 legged as well as 2 legged. Took the business over from his grandmother, Vera, whom I used at least 30 years ago, so you know this is a stable, longstanding business.

We never had concerts, proper, there but the dances in what was laughingly referred to as the new building (built in 1933) were great.

It was an actual campus with no parking on the grounds like there is now in the front. The Cannon Mount was not enclosed & we used to hang out there for cigarette (& pray we didn't get caught). Some of the stories I could relate when I was a student were just plain silly & part of those great memories you have.
I always found it interesting how it was still called the "new building" still until this day or also more commonly the "new gym". I'm younger then you are so I'm guessing you had the privilege of using the tunnel that connected the new gym to the main building instead of having to walk to your gym class in the rain or snow? I used to hate going to that building when it was raining and by the time your clothes would dry you had to walk back to the main building because class was over in the rain again lol. I think the tunnel was sealed off in the 80s I was told. Also do you know anything about the basement of the building? I always wanted to explore the parts of the basement that only janitors were mainly aloud. Their were rumors of sections not used in decades that supposedly was haunted. I heard a bomb shelter was in there and a network of more tunnels.

I graduated in 70. Ahh, the infamous tunnell. It went straight from the main building then split into two branches. One went to the cafeteria, gym & music rooms & the other branch went to the pool. Now down in the basement were the girls lockers, boys lockers, girls gym & some shop classes. Never did see places where only the janitors went or heard of any ghost stories :(

Would be fun to explore though.

Girls got severe warnings and sent home if their skirts were too short. I did attend a football game between Dickinson and Hoboken High. I was appalled how ill mannered Dickinson's students were. Even the Hoboken teachers were appalled by their behavior. I think Dickinson has a history of bad behavior and it follows every generation.
Dickinson is from what I remember the second most populated high school in the state. When I went there I believe it had 3,600 students. I think over crowding plays a big role in why it gets the reputation it does. It can have a lower percentage of problem kids then Snyder, Lincoln or Ferris but do to the fact it has double to triple or more (Snyder i think is under a 1000) the population of the other schools makes it seem like it has more problem kids then it actually does percentage wise.

My late mother-in-law and father-in-law, went to Dickinson before it was named Dickinson. I believe it was the only high school at that time. The school was also overcrowded, my mother-in-law said the school had split sessions to deal with the problem. She went from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Perhaps we should do the same thing, have classes from 7:00 AM to noon and noon to 5:00 PM. We would need to hire more teachers but Dickinson is definitely a problem. I am adding more time because there are more subject matter, originally the split started from 8:00 A.M to noon.

Originally named Jersey City High School, the property was purchased in 1904 and the new building opened on September 6, 1906, in an attempt to relieve overcrowding in the city's public schools. It was the first public secondary school in the city. When the school opened, it housed a 2,000 seat auditorium that saw extensive public use, and hosted such events as a lecture by Helen Keller and political rallies for United States Presidents Taft, Wilson, and Roosevelt. The original school was expanded with the construction of a second building in 1912 to further industrial skills education. This building contained a foundry, print shop, and vocational classrooms. In 1913, the school was renamed William L. Dickinson High School for the superintendent who had advocated for creation of the school during his term from 1872 to 1883. The school was expanded again in 1933 with the addition of an annex containing a swimming pool, cafeteria, and gymnasium.

I graduated DHS in 1970. There was never fighting of this magnitude. Most fights were one on one between kids that just did not get along. We were notorius for setting the grass at the Cannon Mount on fire so we could get an extra break from class. These fires, miraculously, only occurred on sunny, warm days. Hydrogen sulfide in the vents was another favorite way to empty the place out.....QUICK. (We were little stinkers BUT not vicious)

A fee to maintain the curb cut is ideal for those homes. Property owners who want to keep the curb cut would pay the fee. Property owners who don't want to pay the fee would lose the right to the curb cut restoring publicly accessible parking to the street. When it comes to fairness, its not particularly fair that some people have taken away public street parking available to everyone in order to create private street parking reserved only for them.

What is not fair is to charge/fine people a fee for the curb cuts that they were allowed to put starting with Cucci. What is not fair is to charge/fine some schlub for the curb cut he bought the house with. Why do you think there has been a moritorium on this all these years? And those who have been caught putting driveways in have been hit with hefty fines & orders to restore the curb. Unfortunately more have popped up than been caught because no one wants to be the neighborhood rat.

One way of dealing with would be to have a monthly or annual curb cut fee. For the larger properties, a fee would be nominal cost shared among dozens of vehicles. For the individual single family house, a fee might be enough to restore the curb.

While not a bad idea what about those one family homes that have had those curb cuts since the late 80's or early 90's? Some of these homes have changed hands & it is certainly not fair to impose something like this on these families.

What we could do is paint parking lines like they do in North Bergen. This way you minimize ticketing those who are too close to the corners or hydrants. With spaces clearly delineated, you then ticket those who think it is alright to park anyway they want & hog spaces.

And none of this still addresses homes with multiple car families & those older apartment buildings that haven't any space to accomodate parking for their tenants.

I have offered to walk the Heights with Chico to show him first hand what the area looks like. So far he hasn't accepted.

I thought we'd have the same thing again, but nope, Fulop listened to the people. Now everyone won't get financially raped if they have to take an out of network CarePoint ambulance. Fulop is making some great moves lately.

It is also interesting to note that Bayonne now wants to look into other ambulance services. McCabe has been the only provider of ambulance service in Bayonne for years & their record of service is abyssmal not to mention that you have to pay for the service because they do not accept any insurance.

Re: CDC confirms first Ebola case diagnosed in US

dtjcview wrote:
We simply don't know enough about Ebola to be believing some of the sweeping statements made by the CDC.

How fast the virus is mutating? Could it become airbone in humans - like it the Ebola Reston strain did in monkeys? Or what happens when someone catches a respiratory infection alongside Ebola?

Past statistics don't predict future outcomes - when so little is really known about the virus.

See http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/12/health/ebola-airborne/

Today, the Ebola virus spreads only through direct contact with bodily fluids, such as blood and vomit. But some of the nation's top infectious disease experts worry that this deadly virus could mutate and be transmitted just by a cough or a sneeze.

"It's the single greatest concern I've ever had in my 40-year public health career," said Dr. Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota. "I can't imagine anything in my career -- and this includes HIV -- that would be more devastating to the world than a respiratory transmissible Ebola virus."

The World Health Organization says its scientists are unaware of any virus that has dramatically changed its mode of transmission.

"For example, the H5N1 avian influenza virus... has probably circulated through many billions of birds for at least two decades. Its mode of transmission remains basically unchanged. Speculation that Ebola virus disease might mutate into a form that could easily spread among humans through the air is just that: speculation, unsubstantiated by any evidence."

Osterholm and other experts couldn't think of another virus that has made the transition from non-airborne to airborne in humans. They say the chances are relatively small that Ebola will make that jump. But as the virus spreads, they warned, the likelihood increases.

Every time a new person gets Ebola, the virus gets another chance to mutate and develop new capabilities. Osterholm calls it "genetic roulette."

As of October 1, there have been more than 7,100 cases of Ebola, with 3,330 deaths, according to the World Health Organization, which has said the virus is spreading at a much faster rate than it was earlier in the outbreak.

Ebola is an RNA virus, which means every time it copies itself, it makes one or two mutations. Many of those mutations mean nothing, but some of them might be able to change the way the virus behaves inside the human body.
"Imagine every time you copy an essay, you change a word or two. Eventually, it's going to change the meaning of the essay," said Dr. C.J. Peters, one of the heroes featured in "The Hot Zone."

That book chronicles the 1989 outbreak of Ebola Reston, which was transmitted among monkeys by breathing. In 2012, Canadian researchers found that Ebola Zaire, which is involved in the current outbreak, was passed from pigs to monkeys in the air.

Dr. James Le Duc, the director of the Galveston National Laboratory at the University of Texas, said the problem is that no one is keeping track of the mutations happening across West Africa, so no one really knows what the virus has become.

One group of researchers looked at how Ebola changed over a short period of time in just one area in Sierra Leone early on in the outbreak, before it was spreading as fast as it is now. They found more than 300 genetic changes in the virus.

"It's frightening to look at how much this virus mutated within just three weeks," said Dr. Pardis Sabeti, an associate professor at Harvard and senior associate member of the Broad Institute, where the research was done.
Even without becoming airborne, the virus has overwhelmed efforts to stop it.

Osterholm commended groups like Doctors Without Borders but said uncoordinated efforts by individual organizations are no match for Ebola spreading swiftly through urban areas.

"This is largely dysfunctional. Nobody's in command, and nobody's in charge," he said. "It's like not having air traffic control at an airport. The planes would just crash into each other."

I had read an online article that stated that though the virus, like many, has mutated, the one thing
that hasn't changed is the mode of transmission. This makes sense as the HIV has not changed its mode of transmission in the at least 70+ years it has been around though it has mutated. I think the news media as well as the CDC likes keeping the general population off kilter & under control. Reseaching on our own & not believing the nonsense we are fed through the media is the only way we will be able to intelligently deal with this.

Only about 2-3x/year does he get a ticket.

I'm wondering WHY and HOW he gets away with this. And, if there were to be a fire emergency on the block, what liabilities would he have? He's never towed.

Just keep calling the Parking Authority & Police non-emergency. The reason he is not getting towed is because what tickets he is getting, he is paying. $80 - $120 a year in tickets is a cheap price to pay for a dedicated spot. This is this jerk's thinking. Talk to Capt. Soletti, East District commander, he's a stand-up guy.

I once asked a member of the Fire Dept. what they do in case some jerk is blocking a hydrant they need. The answer - the vehicle will be "pushed" out of the way by whatever means necessary to get to the hydrant. Any damage to the car, oh well, you weren't supposed to be there in the first place. A life is more important than your car.

Good Luck.

The A&P is nice, no crowds, and you can get decent prices if you get sale items. The Shop Rite is god awful and I only deal with it if it's a big sale. The entire place is a madhouse. I've never been so aggravated to go food shopping.

The Pathmark is in desperate need of an overhaul. Imagine what that whole plaza could be with even TJ as an anchor.

Call me crazy, but I much prefer the Pathmark at Old Colony than the ShopRite at Metro Plaza. The Pathmark is less crowded, has a self service check out aisle, and I find that their inventory is pretty decent, including things I would never expect to find in a supermarket catering to a ghetto area. (And, yes, I used that term. Sue me.)

Heck, sometimes I find and buy some nice products I would normally buy at WF, but at a much lower price.

I would love to see a Fairway in the area; always an excellent selection. I have never been to a Whole Foods but I'll take everyone at their word.

There are only 2 ShopRite's in the area that I will shop at; Hoboken & Bayonne, with Bayonne being the bettr of the two.

Is it different when you attack the council stating that they, in your opinion, are not qualified because they haven't attended council meetings for as many years as you have? Whether you choose to believe it or not you are personally attacking their intelligence, character as well as their judgement. By your rationale we, the United States, would or should never have a president as there is nothing on the face of this earth prepares anyone for that. You can try to give a child the benefit of your life experiences till you are blue in the face & yet without actual life experience, good or bad, that child hasn't a clue & will do as he/she pleases. Do you admonish & tear down or nurture & pray for the best? And if you think these situations are so far off what offends you, think again. To force your morals & standards on others goes against what the good Lord intended whether it is right or wrong or somewhere in between. It's why we were tossed out of the Garden. For you to judge people as deceitful because they choose anonymity is your opinion only, nothing more, nothing less & you should have been prepared for the backlash knowing what this board enjoys.

Now please excuse me, I am enjoying Bardot in La Parisienne. What a fun movie.

Sorry, TheWrathOfCane you hide behind your phony name like a robber committing a crime in disguise. You have no integrity.

By this logic the Webmaster (of this board) falls into this category.

I have not seen any comments where the webmaster has attacked someone on a personal level but besides that point, most people know who he is, he doesn't hide behind his name. I see him taped many meetings. The issue is hiding behind a name in order to attack someone.

The hypocrisy of it all dear Listers. Our freedom of choice is being held prisoner by one who sits in judgement & feels we are not permitted to judge based on what we chose, on this board, to be our name. Does this make us any less honest? No. Are we thieves in the night, hiding in the shadows? No. We are who we are & have no trouble accepting each, warts & all. And so it should be. To those who sit in judgement & think otherwise remember Matthew 7:1, "Judge not, that you be not judged."

Mike D'Onofrio | The Jersey Journal

"A woman living on Terrance Avenue told police that she went to sleep around 2 a.m. on Friday night, according to police. But when she awoke at 6 a.m. on Saturday, she noticed that the room where her mother sleeps was ransacked and clothes were tossed on the floor, according to police."

And I thought I loved to sleep.

The room where her mother sleeps, and I will go out on a limb, would imply that her mother lived with her. So mom was sleeping in the the room while it was being ransacked?

God bless the JJ and its crystal clear reporting.
