Team Healy campaigned on Change you can see....More Crime, might be one of the changes. With Councilman/woman, Gaughan and Lopez up the heights, they are so out of touch, don't expect much to be done about crime up the heights.

The guy lived rent free almost 8 months, and got some publicity for his collection.

Honestly, my landlord would kick us out within a month if we didn't pay rent.

I love the idea of recipe cards/ingredient lists, so when I finish someone's delicious soup, I can have some idea of how to recreate it without waiting a year until the next swap and crossing my fingers it will be there. I'll be sure to include the recipe with my soup!

Using a photo of Che for their restaurant ad is peanuts in comparison to what food they serve there and call "Cuban". That alone is insulting enough. I'm Cuban and whoever decided to do that ad is a moron.... but then look at how the Hard Grove is run. I'm not surprised.

(Che is a extremely sensitive subject for many Cubans - I once had to carry my mother screaming out of a bakery in Soho because one of the counter people happen to mention how they thought Fidel Castro was a great historical figure. ugg.)

You would think the employees of the JCPA and the JCPD would choose to park appropriately and lead by example. I've always wondered why they don't get this concept.

Re: Property Taxes will increase as Jersey City introduces $507 Million budget
Home away from home

you all are right. and again, right that the general public has to speak up.

a spontaneous rally is asking alot. otherwise a great deal of planning, organizing and outreach (and resources) is required. perhaps to start, use the tools at hand, sign up with the City Clerk's office to speak at council meeting, write letters both to your elected municipal officials and the local papers. bring up at your next neighbor association meeting. consider running for your party committee seat in June 2013,

correct me if I am wrong, but I do not recall ANY council member putting forth either a cost cutting or revenue generating proposal both this council session and the prior one other then Healy's hotel tax. why?

maybe it is up to us to find some of the solutions then bring it to the council (those elected to represent us) in a constructive non-confrontational manner ie. Citizen's Campaign No Blame Approach.

******************************************

I have my ideas as do many others. Here are some ideas from Citizen's Campaign, not all are relevant to Jersey City, but it is a place to start:

http://jointhecampaign.com/platform-f ... tform-for-the-people.html

http://jointhecampaign.com/model-ordinances/model-ordinances.html

MODEL COST-CUTTING PROPOSALS

The Citizens' Campaign currently offers the following cost-cutting proposals:

1) Becoming part of or forming a regional dispatching service thereby saving funds in the area of dispatcher services. Or if your municipality still uses police officers as dispatchers and there is strong resistance to using regional dispatching move to using civilians as dispatchers. Montgomery Township is saving between $600,000 and $750,000 annually from the full regionalization of their 4 dispatcher services: 1) police 2) fire 3) EMS 4) 911.

2) Eliminating benefits for part-time elected officials and professionals. In health insurance costs, this would be a savings of between $12,000 and $20,000 per person depending mainly on whether the benefits were individual or family. (If co-pays are required those numbers would be somewhat reduced.)

3) Sharing of computer administration (network administrator) between the municipality and the school board-- share the cost of the contract. Savings in the $60,000 to $70,000 range depending on the size of the municipality. Formation of an on-going committee to explore potential cost-savings by implementing other shared service arrangements between the municipality and the school board.

4) Perform Energy Audits of municipal, school board or county government buildings.

5) Sunshine On-Line to include budget summary, top 10% of salaries or top 5 salaries for each department whichever is greater, overtime per department and all labor contracts.

6) Merge Zoning Board and Planning Board for towns with less than 15,000 residents as permitted by the Municipal Land Use Law and condense redevelopment authority functions in the governing body and planning board.

7) Contract with County Road Department for municipal road repairs, saving significant costs associated with bidding and private contractor oversight.

8) Contract out Vehicle Maintenance. Montgomery estimates they are saving about $200,000 annually by contracting out to First Vehicle Maintenance-a company that specializes in servicing government fleets as opposed to having an arrangement with a local garage or doing it in-house.

9) Reducing the number of weekly trash pickup days after the summer months (Memorial Day-Labor Day). This initiative can save towns thousands of dollars, since it reduces the money spent in fees for waste removal and frees up workers for park maintenance with less overtime costs.

10) Form Mayor's Task Forces on: (1) Municipal Service Efficiencies and (2) Community Service Supports.

Well I'm not sure if others are doing this but I'm typing up an ingredients list and recipe cards, so people know what they are getting. Esp since my 16-bean soup has smoked ham in it and some people don't eat pork. Bf & I are looking forward to this Sunday. Still not sure if we should bring 8 quarts of the same soup or 4 quarts of two different soups, I guess it will depend on how much time I have this week to make a second soup.

For years now - an employees in his purple Kia has been parking in Paulus Hook to go fishing - under a clearly marked sign "NO PARKING" and the little ticket-mobile drives by, does nothing, EVERY SINGLE TIME. I complained about it once and he moved, only to come back to fish later in the afternoon.

Jersey City man accused of belonging to Elizabeth drug ring

By Julie O'Connor/The Star-Ledger
January 18, 2010, 7:40PM

ELIZABETH -- Authorities have arrested a man they say belonged to the same Elizabeth drug ring as Luqman Abdullah, a wanted felon who is the suspected kingpin of the city?s cocaine trade.

Lamont Harris, 35, of Jersey City was taken into custody at about 11 a.m. Thursday, after leading six sheriff?s officers on a chase up and down several fire escapes, authorities said. This was one of a series of arrests resulting from an investigation into Abdullah?s drug ring, dubbed Operation Red Zone.

Harris was charged with conspiracy to distribute drugs and racketeering, and his bail was set at $1 million.

He is believed to have been an associate of 27-year-old Abdullah, an alleged Bloods gang member who has been at large since April 2009. Authorities believe Abdullah led a violent drug ring that flooded Essex and Union counties with about $700,000 worth of cocaine each week.

Officers found Harris at his girlfriend?s apartment on John F. Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City. He jumped out a window and led them on a chase up the fire escape of a five-story building and onto the rooftop. Harris then leapt onto an adjacent building, bolted down another fire escape and into a locked alley. He entered the building and was arrested in a fourth-floor hallway, said Jim Lowney, a spokesperson for the Sheriff?s Office.

Letter: Shame on you for using Che Guevara in Jersey City Cuban restaurant ad

By Agustin C. Torres/The Jersey Journal
January 19, 2010, 12:01AM

Letter writer is upset that Che Guevara is used in a Jersey City Cuban restaurant ad.

When I turned to Page 12 of The Jersey Journal, I got shocked with the Hard Grove Cafe ad.

I have been there a few times, the owner was Cuban, I don't know if it still is the same person, if you are, shame on you. I know this is a free country, but do you remember what Che did to your country and tried to do in South America, etc.? I came to the USA when I was 13 years old, but I read my history and family always made sure I did not forget what happened in Cuba and the names of all those responsible. One of them Che Guevara, he was not even Cuban (thank God).

A person that is not Cuban might not know who Che was and even wear a T-shirt with his face on it, I might forgive their ignorance, but a Cuban? There is no forgiveness for you, again, shame on you. Don't just go to the movies and see a picture that shows "what a nice guy he was," read, instruct yourself before making such a big mistake and insulting the Cuban community.

I guess I can save more money now not going to this restaurant, I do not support anything, any business or anybody that uses communists and murderers on their advertisements.

An 18-year-old North Bergen man was beaten and robbed by a group of unidentified males while he was waiting for a bus Saturday morning in the Jersey City Heights, according to a police report.

The man was standing at the intersection of Beach Street and Kennedy Boulevard at about 10:30 a.m. when a group of teens or men ran up behind him, pulled his sweater over his head and began punching him in his face and his head, according to the report.

They ran off with the victim's red leather jacket, which was worth about $150, and his iPod, worth about $100, the report said.

The man was treated at Meadowlands Hospital for cuts and bruises.

Robbery victim hit with brass knuckles helps Jersey City cops catch two suspects

By Amy Sara Clark/The Jersey Journal
January 19, 2010, 7:30AM

A Jersey City man beaten with brass knuckles helped police catch two of the people he said robbed him of his laptop and cell phone, reports said.

The 30-year-old victim told police he was walking at Bevan Street and Hopkins Avenue at around 4:15 a.m. Sunday when four men came up to him and began punching and kicking him, reports said.

The men took his backpack, which contained his laptop and cell phone, reports said.

The suspects split up and left the scene, but the victim followed two of them and flagged down a passing police car along the way, reports said.

Police arrested the two people trailed by the victim: Roberto Claudio, 21, of Grant Avenue in Jersey City, and a 17-year-old from Rose Avenue in Jersey City, the report said.

Police found brass knuckles with blood on them and an open lock-blade knife in Claudio's pocket, reports said.

After police arrested him, Claudio said, "Yeah, I punched him (the victim) in the head with the brass knuckles 'cause he came at me," reports said.

The victim was treated for cuts and bruises to his face and head at Jersey City Medical Center and released, the report said.

There was no indication from reports that his belongings were recovered.
