Thanks Chief. I just checked mine and the incraese is preposterous. I haven't received anything in the mail either!

They actually stopped sending me bills which is completely DAFT. Taxes are due Feb 1st and I just found out without any notification. The tax office couldn't tell me what the taxes would for the next 3 quarters as well. They are totally inept.

Well I travelled on the PATH twice that day.
What would stop someone with a bomb from doing the same thing I did? Just go to another station and get on the train. It's a system that doesn't work.
How many terrorists have these bag searches caught?

It's better with some search then no search at all. What about the safety of all the employees on the train system ? You are a guest on their train when you are a guest in someone's home you should abide by their rules, similar to a dress code at an establishment. Even when you "pay" a cover charge you get searched before entering and leave when told to or at closing which ever comes first. It's better with some search then no search at all.

i have also handed people bags and told them "you are what you don't pick up."

that went over really well with the old lady in lincoln park who looked at me like i was some menace because i was walking a pit bull and a boston terrier near her precious yorkie. some example she showed because her little pride and joy pooped on the ground and she walked away from it. i picked up the poop and bagged it and handed it back to her.

no public garbage cans is no excuse!

aside from being a professional dog walker (and sometimes having to tote the poop with me for longer than several blocks, try taking it back into the car with me until i find a trash can,) i live on 4th and erie and if my dog poops while we're out walking and i can't find a can, i pick it up and bring it back to the trash cans in front of my building. there are plenty of residential garbage cans in front of these houses, i highly doubt someone (aside from my neighbors) will complain that someone is disposing of dog waste in their garbage cans as opposed to leaving it for them to step in. i've even at times run out of bags and picked up something off the street to pick up the poop. it's better to have to wash your hands than have to face a fine or someone posting your photos all over the internet.

Re: NEW YORK DAILY NEWS -- Restoring Journal Square to its original glory.
Home away from home

I hope something happens to the plaza surrounding Journal Square PATH station soon. Whoever was maintaining the stone paving that covers the entire area has apparently given up on doing any more maintenance as of last summer. I had assumed it was the Port Authority that handled that and they used to do a great job. I particularly appreciate the plantings they go out of their way to maintain. But the paving stones are breaking up pretty bad lately and the entire area is going downhill fast. Numerous paving stones are loose, they pop up and trip pedestrians. The inlaid mosaic has been completely abandoned to its fate and is now disintegrating into an unrecognizable scar. As to the giant buildings proposed to go up on the footprint of the old shopping plaza, it never seamed doable to me (see above) and seams even less likely now in light of the corruption scandal and the tanked economy. Meanwhile the temporary fence surrounding the gravel covered field is now a trap for drifting debris that is never cleaned. The 911 Memorial fountain didn?t get it?s annual ?just get it working for September? maintenance and has been dry all year, and is also a trap for drifting debris. Which is depressing. Cause for hope would be that maybe they stopped maintaining the area since immanent sweeping change is coming?

It's amazing how this post puts a much less alarmist tone while also appearing to me to paint a much more accurate picture of what went down. The events as described here are pretty much what I pictured them to be from the start.

Thanks! My upstairs neighbor was indeed a victim it turns out. Her delivery of some clothing via USPS was stolen and it was probably the box I saw him with that day last week. We are going to go in tomorrow or Sunday to make an official police report. Bummer for her but I am hoping his posing as a Postal worker will add some serious time to his sentence. It was amazing that he was boldly waltzing around taking whatever he wanted. He probably hit a lot of cars downtown as well. A real POS! BTW? This is the 8th dude I helped the cops catch over the years. It never gets old when you can actually snag one of these leeches. Also, if you get a lot of packages delivered make sure the postal people don't just leave it on your stoop in plain sight!

Re: The Answer: Municipal Consolidation
Home away from home
Home away from home

this is an exciting idea and i do hope it works out there ...

there was a constitutional convention in jersey back in 1947 ... it was called after a referendum --- as far as i can see ...

http://www.njstatelib.org/NJ_Informat ... itutionv1/NJConst1n2.html

if it does and it could happen here too, consolidating the large number of small, independent and irrelevant municipalities would be the first among the many changes that they should consider ...

is there a political will in the state to change to status quo? i doubt that there is the will today ... but who knows what will happen with increasing property and income tax levels, disappearing public services, etc ...

Re: path/subway searches

I really don't get what the big deal is. How hard is it to comply with the searches? I say better safe than sorry. I got searched even when they saw my work badge or carrying a small bag where explosives won't fit I still complied with the Police when they asks to search my bag.

I would be weary if one refused a search and they're taking the same train and station with me.

It only takes seconds folks! I've been through the 1993 WTC Bombing and 9/11. I'll be damned if some people in our midst will try to take us down again by refusing to be searched.

I've been following the California constitutional convention idea from afar - it has tremendous potential! I'm hopeful that it becomes a template for other states to address long-standing, sytemic, seemingly unsolvable problems. Something like this is probably what will be necessary to restructure NJ govt.

" community's disregard of this matter that makes neighborhoods UGLY,turning them into ghetto's."
No one has ever disregarded dog shit in this community, as a matter of fact this is the 10000000000000 time that this has been written about in this forum.

What action are you going to take since you feel it is needed ASAP. I want to know what YOU are going to do? Or should I just assume that you are here bitching?

I personally have handed people baggies, yelled at people, shamed people, and even called the cops. I even almost got beaten on one or two times by big bad men. And yes I have been called every name in the book of names by these jerks. But the next time I saw them they were bending over picking that shit up!

Re: PEOPLE NOT CURBING THEIR DOGS!!!

Just can't stay away

I am a dog owner. I pick up after my dog.

I hate doggie doo everywhere. I had a few nice presents on my sidewalk recently. It's nasty.

A few reasons why it happens: I always notice more poop on the ground when it snows, as in people think when there's snow they don't have to pick up!

I think some of the cans were removed specifically because the owners don't want dog poo stinking up their cans.

Also, in my hood, same one as the lead poster of this thread, there are a few dog owners in that area that just let their dogs walk themselves. No I'm not kidding. They just walk around the block with no owner and no leash and poop wherever.

The thing that gets me the most, is that my f-ing DOG steps in the dog poo, and I don't notice until he's all up on my S^*$ with his poop paws. AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

It's very frustrating. So much that sometimes I pick up other people's poo.

Yes - please give me better government! I am begging!

Municipalities are what hold NJ back from being the great state it could be
consolidation is likely to reduce the problem with wide-spread corruption. however, a fundamental change in the structure of the state's governance, government, and political infrastructure would (or could) change it http://www.repaircalifornia.org/

i certainly hope that the new structure of the park and the segregation of activities - kids, dogs, and others - will lead to a more civilized big city park ...

the bb court problem is unlikely to go away unless the city takes a proactive stance during evening hours; for instance why did not the police department enforce the nightly closing rules of the park? the park closes at 10pm ... where they too chicken?

Re: PEOPLE NOT CURBING THEIR DOGS!!!

Home away from home

I'm a dog owner and when I walk my dog at night, I always bring plastic baggies with me from the supermarket to clean up.

However, I am thinking part of the problem is that our wonderful city decided to remove like all public garbage cans downtown.

Literally, on Jersey Ave, from Newark to Hamilton Park, there is like 1 garbage can. There used to be cans on EVERY corner.

After my dog does her business, maybe four blocks away... its a pain to have to carry "the doo doo" four blocks back to home but I do. Occasionally I'll find a private garbage can available on someone's property to dispose of, but seriously....

WHERE DID THE TRASH CANS GO.

I would contend that if there were more trash cans, so people didn't have to walk around with "doo doo" in bags, more "irresponsible" dog owners would clean up and throw away.

Ask Steven Fulop to bring back the garbage cans downtown.

FG

As a dog owner I am all for beating the sh*t out of people who don't clean up after their dog. I have said it before, it only takes ONE irresponsible dog owner a couple of days to foul up an entire block. I live near Hamilton Park and there a couple of real douches who aren't cleaning up. Re: PEOPLE NOT CURBING THEIR DOGS!!!

Problem is that most good dog owners do pick up after their dogs, it's the shits who don't! I live on 3rd and occasionally I'll see someone not poop n scoop and I'll take a photo, then when they come by me I'll chat with them and their dog, inquiring as to the dog's name, their name, where they live, all this and then I'll say "name, you do know it's not nice and against the law not to pick up after dogx, don't you?". Usually that's enough for them to say they forgot or sheepishly return to the scene of the crime. BTW, I always have plastic bags with me to give those errant miscreants. Plus I think we should post photos of both the affending owners and dogs like the johns were posted for a time in the newspapers in NYC who were busted!

BTW, irrespective of the "property values are way too inflated" and your use of dog shit=ghettos, makes you sound a little entitled as dog shit affects us all, regardless of where we live, and poor people don't like stepping in dog shit either. I do agree the property values are over-inflated since the housing bubble burst.
