Three of those firehouses were active not too long ago..

Boyd Ave- housed engine 17 & ladder 11..

Central Ave- housed engine 18**

**Both Firehouses were going to be renovated, but I guess due to the times they can't keep these old firehouses running.

The Summit Ave firehouse also housed the Arson Units.

I was at the meeting on Wednesday. Was surprised that the turnout wasn't larger. I even made a new sign for the occasion.

It was a long meeting. I left after the public speaking section around 10:45ish.

It just amazes me these guys. I love in the video you see the guy sleeping. I was told this is our deputy mayor. Simply amazing. If I were caught sleeping on the job I'd be severely reprimanded.

Please all, stay mad at this.... this incompetency cannot be ignored.

I second Dreyer's in Cranford. They have a huge selection of fruit and veggie plants, with many heirloom varieties.

If you are going the seed route, I recommend a company called Renee's Garden. I have always had good luck with her seeds when other companies' have failed to sprout.

I do recommend the soil test, though it sometimes can take a couple of months to get your results back. There are plants to stay away from if contaminated soil is a concern - leafy greens and root vegetables, for instance. A google search with give you lots of articles about this.

The gardenweb forums are full of great advice, definitely check them out: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/

Best of luck!

Last year there was widespread problems with tomato blight. Luckily enough, we were blight free. I "think" the reasons why we escaped the blight were two:
1.) we got our plants from a small independant nursey who "grow their own" seedlings, Dreyers in Cranford. I heard that blight came from some of the mega nurseys that sell thru the big chains (Home Depot, etc)
2.) I used plastic mulch (the sheets) around the plants. This seemed to keep the blight spores from getting bounced from the ground to the foliage during rain/watering.

Good luck. We usually do pole beans, tomatoes, basil and a few herbs. Wish we had more room.

There's definitely more to this story. The first time home buyer credit is like a short term no interest loan via your taxes, I?m not really sure how it works but you have to eventually pay it back. The credit: Applies only to homes used as a taxpayer's principal residence. Reduces a taxpayer's tax bill or increases his or her refund, dollar for dollar. Is fully refundable, meaning the credit will be paid out to eligible taxpayers, even if they owe no tax or the credit is more than the tax owed. I think the issue here is that the home is not his primary residence. His residence is in Secaucus. ps. Gnome the reason why it is a good idea is becasue the real estate market is sufferring from the biggest collapse in a century and the federal government is trying to soften the blow by allowing the credit for average joes. You can't benefit from it if you're a property speculator/flipper.

The original first time home buyer credit was like a loan. It had to be paid back via your tax return over 16 years. The new one is a full on 8k tax credit. If you qualify, you get the whole amount. Unfortunately, the income qualification is set pretty low, 75k single, 150k married.

It is a only a "bit" o load of crap. The concept is to keep people spending. Real estate is one of the largest industries with many other industries tied into it. So by keeping people buying they need to "fix up" their home. buy a car to put in that garage, hire someone to clean it, take care of the lawn, etc. I know that isnt as much the case out here, but that is the thought process. So unfortunately, it is falsely inflating the market trends. I think that it keeps consumer confidence high enough such that we dont have a cas e where a recovery wont cost as much.

Backyard Gardening
Home away from home
Home away from home

Hi Everyone,
We're doing a mini garden renovation this year and want to plant some vegetables in the backyard. Specifically I want to plant some Perennial vegetables like Rhubarb but have no idea where I can get it. Can anyone recommend Gardening Centers in the area? I?ve been to the one over by the Holland Tunnel but I can?t remember the name and want to call them. Do you have the name or number? Also if you have any general tips about backyard gardening in downtown I would be most grateful. We?ve already decided we should have the soil tested for lead since we will be planting edible stuff. I found Rutgers has a good website for soil testing. Any others you can think of or anything free out there? Sorry if this is a duplicate post, I searched but didn't find anything similar on the message board.

This sounds a lot more plausible. I mean why would her daughter suddenly "put the car into drive"?

Get this installed by a telephone guy: http://www.vikingelectronics.com/Products/view_product.php?pid=25

No phone co line needed, all internal to the building and uses the existing phone lines. You can even program entry codes for UPS and such. Locksmiths like Monaco don't even know it exists! I've had it problem free for 8 years, and I didn't even spring for the fancy vandalproof panel, just hung a $5 phone in the entryway.

This "1st time homebuyer" credit is bullsh*t. YOu are giving money to people who lucked out and waited until the market crashed. They are already getting a fair price! What about those 2nd time home buyers? Those of us who purchased a home in 2007 and lost a sh*t ton of cash on the sale? and now want to purchase another home in another area?

Attention JC hipsters/artists buy your dream house....an old JC fire house.
Home away from home
Home away from home

Check out today?s (Friday 03/12/10) paper copy of the JJ. The city has a two page advertisement for an auction of public property. Some of the places listed would be ideal for a JC hipster or artist. I would jump on it but I am too old, no more Dan Tanna bachelor pad for me. (anyone have a link to a time machine?)

Here are the listed properties: (pick up the paper JJ for a more detailed description of the auction)

Location***Desc ***Size***Min Bid

666 Summit Ave***Fire house***88.81 X 120.85IRR*** $275K

218 Central Ave***Fire house***21.1 X 91*** $200K

139 South St***Fire house***25 X 100*** $175K

106 Boyd Ave***Fire house***25 X 168.40 *** $175K

364 Ocean Ave***3S-B-C-7U-NH***30.18 X 103.06 IRR ***$150K

They also have a few vacant city lots for sale.

I mentioned this before the paper copy of the JJ has loads of city, county, and state notices in the classified section. For the past few weeks there have been a lot of Hudson County Sheriff Sale notices on foreclosed properties. Maybe you can pick something up on the cheap.

You can get a subscription to the paper copy JJ for $150 a year. It?s not the greatest paper in the world but it does have some good local information in it. (also has the stuff the city tries to sneak by it?s citizens hidden in the classified section)

Just think if you buy a fire house you wouldn?t have to beg your SO to let you install a pole in the bedroom. Worth every penny! (or dollar bill in this case)

(buy support the JJ)

According to zillow that place 225 Palisade Ave was sold for $550K in 10/2008.
http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/225 ... y-NJ-07306/88859830_zpid/

If he got a loan for $530K then he put down $20k or less than 5% of the purchase price. Not a lot of wiggle room should RE prices head south. This seems like a case study in why the US real estate market is still in trouble.

I doubt that place would fetch $550K today...
