Re: Backyard Gardening

It's too early to grow basil outside. Start with the windowsill indoors, you can re-pot it into a bigger container and leave it outside in May. Don't water it too much and make sure it gets full sun during the day.
My best experience with Basil was from one of those bagged with soil from a supermarket, not the ones you grow from seeds or buy at home depot.

Well, I've never been incarcerated, but I don't think when you're in there there's much room for any mode of transportation. maybe a segway or a skateboard, but probably just as quick to walk across the cell.

Also, unless it's a community holding block, I don't think there's much to buy. Maybe a prostitute had a nice scarf she had her eye on.

I think it was a good night.

According to the JC Independent, there were about 200 people there, still more residents attending than usual.

http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/ ... ons-move-denied-and-more/

People came and left, some had signs, others stayed to the bitter end and many got up to speak. The message was clear.

The man in the white shirt was good, as was everyone that got up to speak. The more people who do that, the better.

Seeing Deputy Mayor Tayari sleeping in the background at the end of the video is reflective of the attitude of the City Council and what they think of the tax payers of this town.

Too bad Jersey City doesn't have a Ward G.

She sounds like she'd be an excellent addition to the City Council.

I am still surprised, but no longer shocked, by the cynicism and lack of empathy people display sometimes, especially online where they can hide behind an avatar. All big and bad, and cruel, and ignorant, devoid of empathy and respect, seemingly disconnected from whole chunks of their own species. Lot of good that big old brain does them. Normal?

Re: Stop using the word "retarded"

Kramones,
What specifically about the word "retarded" is derogatory? The only thing that makes it so is that we allow it to be. The people we are talking about are, for one reason or another, slower than average, which is exactly what the word "retarded" means. If we all stood together and stood up for the disadvantaged (which I'm sure you do) and took back the word "retarded" it would mean just what it is meant to mean, nothing more, nothing less.

BTW, there is a special place in my heart for anyone who teaches, cares for or otherwise helps special people. Thank you for your work.

That story sounded like bullshit from the beginning. A young child may not know better but a 14 year old definitely would realize the consequences of changing a car from drive to reverse without telling the driver! I'd be pissed if my mom tried to put the blame on me for her being a wreckless and irresponsible driver. They are ridiculously lucky.

Is this still the cause for delay for the WTC path? I heard the announcement say there was an obstruction on the track so it would be delayed by 20 minutes last night.

Wow. I was shocked after reading some of these responses. Whoever said that "special" means extraordinary and "retard" means slow probably should have thought twice before posting that response. Special also means otherwise different from the normal and retard, a verb, means to delay the progression of. So actually, people with disabilities literally ARE special, of course you feel that the word special shouldn't be used to describe people who are not perfect.

And to the person who said, "Pretty soon the JJ won't even tell us the ethnicity of violent crime suspects walking the streets...." Real classy. Explain to me how this is relevant - why are you comparing a person with a disability to a criminal? Or are you that bigoted that you are scared of people with disabilities as you are of a criminal?

I've been a special educator for many years and I take personal offense to the use of the word retarded. Not only is it insulting to people who are less fortunate than you or I, but on the larger picture of Civil Rights it is particularly upsetting. What a great freakin idea. Let's keep putting down individuals and continue to use derogatory terms to describe a group of people who have historically been denied access to the luxuries that we are accustomed to.

What good comes out of calling someone retarded? How big of a sacrifice is it for people to simply stop using that word? It seems that the only reason for people to use the word is to purposefully offend someone.

You should be thankful that you were born with all your limbs, the mental and educational capacity to survive on your own, the capability to make sound decisions for yourself, and that you are normal.

Re: The Beacon

I tried to find the same listing on the Fannie Mae site without much luck...got dizzy with their website,

But I found another:

http://www.homepath.com/listingdetail ... 7&pg=2&listingid=20925405

Looks like similar 2 Bedroom 2 Bath under contract for $250K. Looks legit. It seems that HomePath site might be a Fannie Mae subsidiary?

Of course there's no way without looking at the physical unit or at least inquiring further about the apartment number whether or not you are on the second floor with a lovely view of the garbage container.

I see they list HOA fees for this last unit at $865 (seems very high.) I presume that includes heat, hot water and central air conditioning? Does anyone have an approximation on the annual taxes or the "in lieu of" on a 2 bedroom, 2 bath?

Okay,
I think this might be the first listing with the price lowered slightly to $312K...17th (#1704) floor, nice it aimed NorthEast.

Perhaps the article was a bit much, but why put Jersey City down so much. If you don't like JC, why not leave. For many, JC is perfect - close enuff to Manhattan but not in Manhattan. Unless you are partying every night, perhaps one does not need to be in Chelsea.

Re: JC School Board Election * April 20, 2010 * VOTE

I will be voting for Carol Lester.

Carol Lester
 From a family of teachers and educators
 Lobbied vigorously on behalf of charter schools after realizing how poor the options were in Jersey City for her own children
 Member of the founding board of the Learning Community Charter School
 Teacher of yoga and music for seniors and children
 JC homeowner and resident for 21 years
Carol has education in her genes. She is a teacher, both of her parents were public school teachers, and so is her husband. Carol?s deep understanding of the issues will serve the school board well.

A response to "Teacher" is this article from the Jersey City Independent, written by Jon Whiten (March 3, 2010):

"Monday was the deadline for prospective candidates to file their paperwork for the April 20 Board of Education election, which will fill three seats on the nine-seat board for a three-year term. A total of 16 candidates, including all three incumbents whose terms are up ? Terry Dehere, Gerry McCann and Angel Valentin ? are running.

Here are the names of the other 13 candidates that filed: Kevin Armstrong, Sebastian D?Amico, Evelyn Farmer, Carol Lester, Gerald Maurice Lyons, June Mulqueen, John Muniz, Marimer Navarrete, Aura Ordonez, Hiral Patel, Anthony Sharperson, Sterling Waterman and Arthur Zigman.

Like last year, we will run a series of Q&As with the candidates in the weeks leading up to the election. The last day to register to vote, or change your registration address, is March 30."

From Kabili Tayari's letter:
"Let us not forget that at least 1.5 million public school students from Abbott districts comprise at least one-third of the New Jersey public school students and are not receiving a 21st Century quality education and equitable funding."

Is he suggesting that Abbott District kids deserve MORE than what they actually already get in funds, compared to other students in the state?

Who is to blame for the Abbot kids' NOT getting "quality education"? If one is to take a look at the JC public school system, one can surmise that it is the bureaucracy & 'business-as-usual' politics that do it disservice. The bulk of the funds must not go to the kids & the teachers, because the results don't show the millions of dollars of public moneys getting spent on the system.

Yes, And I'm sure that her midnight strolls along Columbus Avenue are just as much fun as night walks in Chelsea,
Of course the art studios of Columbus Avenue are world renouned, just like Chelsea. And the chic boutiques near Columbus Avenue where so many fine designer items are only $.99 will help her wile away the hours.

What with all these price comparisons one MIGHT think an honest article would mention what Shelby was paying for the last 7 years for her Chelsea apartment.

I hope the difference is large enough to cover the sheer joy of twice a day in a PATH train.

Twaddle like this makes one think of the advantages of press censorship...or at least an addendum like "this AD was payed for by XYZ Realty LLC."

She should wish that it was only a nightmare & that she could wake up & shake it off.

She did nothing wrong? I guess lying is not considered wrong nowadays, among the many other things she reportedly did. By driving recklessly to get away, she put many other people in danger. That's a rather irresponsible action for a doctor. Her actions should be reviewed by the Board as I think it should be grounds for reprimand.

At 50 Columbus, a tower in Jersey City that opened in 2007, ?the numbers are really pretty amazing,? said Jacqueline Urgo, the president of the Marketing Directors, a Manhattan company that oversees leasing there. She said 35 apartments had been leased in January and 48 in February, even though it was the snowiest month in state history, according to those who keep such figures.

Up the street at Grove Pointe, another tower near the Grove Street PATH station, the rental pace was also strong, Ms. Urgo said, with 14 apartments leased in January and 24 in February.

Revive this next time a downtown abatement is requested.

Re: City staffer retires with huge payout then rehired by City

If these two former employees were that 'valuable', why doesn't the city make the case for it & convince the public that they really are THAT great with what they do? And if they are truly indispensable with their jobs not yet done, why did they retire, especially at this time of crisis?

And one of these experts (I use the term loosely), "worked on the budget, capital accounts and fiscal matters"? Hello! We're in fiscal distress & these former employees surely had a hand getting us all in this mess -- what an accomplishment to add on their resume. And for their expertise, they got compensated royally. Sweet.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that these retirees wanted to further take advantage of the system, one that allowed them to take money the city doesn't have -- before the rules change. And for those elected officials who facilitated it & allowed it to happen, how have you served your constituents? That's a rhetorical question because we know you've never been accountable for your actions ... parasitic leeches all of you, one & all.

The public has lost its respect & trust for this administration. They've made a mess & each one responsible will leave a bigger mess behind them as they leave or die off.

A change for the better has to take shape & it's just a matter of time -- many people are working on this & we need that critical mass to make it happen.

Council Report: Budget Brouhaha Continues, Elections Move Denied and More

By Shane Smith ? Mar 12th, 2010

Although this Wednesday?s council meeting was not as packed as the last two were, a relatively large crowd of about 200 were present in council chambers for at least part of the five-hour proceeding as the council considered nine first-read ordinances, 13 second reads and 27 resolutions.

And even though most of the legislation on Wednesday?s agenda was not directly related to the budget, that was the very thing most of those who addressed the council were focused on. Many more community members than usual approached the podium to speak to the council on a number of controversial second read ordinances, quite a few of them more than once. All council members were present to vote on the ordinances, although Ward E councilman Steven Fulop arrived late; At-Large councilwoman Willie Flood left during the public hearing portion of the meeting and did not cast votes on any resolutions.

the report continues:
