Re: Charter Schools and No Child Left Behind

We should unite well because it worked. It was something that worked and gave us national pride.

Plus I believe(my personal belief) that in an American school. Children should be learning about American History and achievements/culture. They should also reach a certain level or the three Rs.

See, you think kids should be learning certain things, but that's really just forcing your worldview on complete strangers. And I'm not necessarily saying you, but a federal one size fits all program. Who says that's the right way?

As for the USSR, it's not surprising that as our education system has become more and more centralized, our results have deteriorated.

Why do we need to unite against anyone?

So XYZ Realty, Inc. went out, found a girl living in Chelsea, paid for her to move to JC and then paid her to say how much she liked it. Maybe all of the renters in that 400-unit building are also paid to live there. Can't be that people actually like it, or that maybe, in light of today's economic climate, they're actually happy about paying less for more in JC than they could get in Manhattan.

Before the election, I received a notice on my front stoop from Guy Catrillo when he was running for council. I wasn?t familiar with his face or name and the card didn?t elaborate on his achievements.

As far as I?m concerned, he?s in the same boat as the rest of the crooks.

He didn?t make a mistake. He was aware of what he was doing. He committed a crime. He pleaded guilty to the crime after being caught. He is a criminal.

If he should run for office in the future, I will not vote for him.

"For Dixon Mills was from what friends who lived me told me"

The Facts need some checking. Each unit at the Beacon has it's own electric hook-up and individual thermostat. I lived there for a year and can confirm my bills for the washer/dryer, kitchen appliances and light bulbs were very low around $50/mo for a 800sf 1br. The only monthly cost for heating and cooling was the electric fan which pushes the hot and cold air into the unit through the duct work.

Jersey City, artists win affordable units case

JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

The New Jersey Appellate Division has upheld a trial court decision requiring that a luxury building in Jersey City's Powerhouse Arts District include seven affordable units for artists.

The builder of 311 Washington St., Washington Commons, LLC, had challenged the requirement to sell seven of the 68 units to the city for $1 each, arguing it did not understand these were the terms of an agreement with the city and these terms violated the builder's constitutional rights.

The company values the units at more than $400,000 each.

But the trial and appellate courts found the complaint had been filed too late.

In addition, both courts agreed that there was no support for a constitutional claim and that officials of the development company should have returned to the Board of Adjustment for clarification of any issues they did not understand.

"This decision is a victory for the city and its artists," Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy said in a news release.

Washington Commons has appealed the decision to the New Jersey Supreme Court, city officials said.

Nicholas Buttafucco, the attorney for Washington Commons, declined to comment on "pending litigation."

What happened with this appeal??? Did Buttafucco get his day in court. Where is the victory that Healy claimed for the artists? I haven't seen too many artists on this block lately.

I live across the street and I'm amazed that they left all the second floor condos empty for all this time.

I spoke with a friend in the biz, and he said in Hudson County you CAN connect with sewage because sanitary and storm drains all are one. i was wrong.

BUT my one neighbor DID connect his pumps to the municipal sewage line AND....he had a GEISER of shit coming out of his toilet during a storm because I guess the sewage couldn't handle all of the water. Maybe we should put our pump water into the gutter and down the storm drain so it doesn't back up our shit water? I don't know.....It's all speculation, but I do know that I am sick of dealing with a flooded basement.

Re: The Beacon

Those maintance fees yes are very high as everything is include plus all the amenties like the pool which they have a life guard which must get paid as well as the insurance for that. Original Plans was to preserve only the exterior so they won't have everything including the electric besides the heat and hot water might even be electric and not gas which is even more expensive for the heating if it is controlled within each unit, and a set temperature included from my understanding. Most buildings will at least have the electricity broken off, but I do believe with it since rewiring the entire place was going to be so costly that is why they just included it. Consider such amenties like air conditioning, washer and dryers, dishwashers and other things that can use a good amount of electricity year round at $60-75 a month or so each unit per month on the studio and 1 bedrooms and more on the two bedrooms all in proportion to the size of the unit. Also you have to remember there is insurance as well as funding for the reserves for the future of the building that is included in it. Both of those I am sure could be around $200 or so of that amount. Even though it is seen as a new building as condos they still want to have those reserves in case anything goes wrong. Also high is the Big Pre-war condo building on Kennedy Blvd and Duncan Ave The Hague which is around $500 for the one bedrooms so the Beacon is kind of in line with that building for its maintenance and it doesn't really have any amenities at all, nor parking except for like 5 cars or so from what I heard. And the electric isn't included there.

For Dixon Mills was from what friends who lived me told me all the heating and air conditioning was electric so the bill could get high, it might be gas now, but probably not. So I would be surprised with the Beacon having that for calculating the maintenance amount.

Louie is still a loser. But he's right about Christie and his crew. Christie tried to get Menendez out of office and failed. He did succeed in smearing Joe Doria and embarassing Jon Corzine.

It wasn't hard for Christie to find fools like Lou and Guy Catrillo who'd take the cash. But it is interesting to see how all Christie's cohorts in the US Attorney's office now work in his Administration.

The shame is is that any Artist, Sculptor, Musician, Hipster, or anyone creative that really needs the space will never get a chance ( unless they have tons of cash) Developers with lots of cash will win the bid and turn them into CONDO'S. Yuck!

There should be a stipulation in the sale of these Historic buildings
restricting them from condo conversion.

I once again want to clarify the physics of pumping to you all. It takes no more power to pump up a 5 foot hose than to pump into the bottom of a 5 foot deep swimming pool. The height of the water column is all that matters, not the volume of the reservoir. So let's say the water level in the sewer is 3 feet above your basement floor, but the street is 6 feet. It's twice as hard to pump it that 6' up and over than to put the hose into a sewer connection and pump it in against that 3' pressure head.

And BTW, that pressure is 0.433 psi per foot of depth. I've heard people throw around crazy pressure numbers. PSI is the weight of a column 1 inch square. Water is 62.4 lb/cu ft. Divide that by 144 to get 0.433 psi/ft of depth.

Sorry to hear that. We were in your shoes in April '07 but fortunately we were home when the flooding happened and were able to do something about it. In our case, the sump pump pumps water into the sewer system. It was working, but at a certain point, the JC sewer system became backed up and there was no where for the water from our basement to go. The only solution was to pump the water out into the sidewalk, which I did with a portable pump I have.
You'll probably notice that a lot of your neighbors have pipes coming out to the sidewalk from their basements. I don't think this is to code, but it should take care of the problem. Alternatively, you can buy a portable pump, keep your eye on the weather and make sure you're home when this happens. FYI, we had 3" of rain over an 11 hr period. You should benchmark your risk of flooding to the amount of rainfall.

Hudson County Fire Department! This would be beneficial to the residents of Hudson County. As long as they do not create the disaster in North Hudson. Savings would come with the reduction of Chief of the Departments from 6-1. Also the closing of firehouses that border other cities. Consolidation of Companies into larger modern houses. The savings would not be dramatic, but it will ease the burden on the taxpayers.

Former Assemblyman Manzo calls out U.S. Attorney's office for alleged misconduct in FBI sting
Quite a regular
Quite a regular

From the Hudson Reporter:

JERSEY CITY AND BEYOND - Former state assemblyman Louis Manzo at a press conference in Jersey City on Monday blasted the federal government's July 2009 corruption probe, claiming it was tainted by misconduct by prosecutors involved in the case.

Manzo was arrested on July 23 as the part of the sting, which netted public officials and religious leaders on bribery and money laundering charges. Manzo and his brother Ronald were both charged with allegedly accepting $27,500 in corrupt cash payments from government informant Solomon Dwek in exchange for Manzo?s official assistance on development matters once he became mayor.

Manzo at the press conference took to task assistant U.S. Attorneys prosecuting his case and others.

He said they ran afoul of federal law with actions such as donating to the campaign to former U.S. Attorney, now Gov. Chris Christie. Many of them were hired for jobs in Christie's administration, he said.

"It is shameful that this once great symbol of law and order has denigrated into the characteristics of a political ward club," Manzo said.

Also, Manzo called for an investigation of the attorneys by the federal government. Manzo said he filed a motion of misconduct regarding the attorneys with U.S. District Judge Jose Linares and will be in court on Monday for a hearing on the matter. - RK

No. It isn't the Park Hamilton. It's in the heights. I sold my condo and put part of the profit into escrow for the buyers to cover the assessment for them. It hurt to give up the money but I'm glad I'm not there anymore even though I LOVED my place. It was-and is--a beautiful loft but I imagine there's a lot of negative energy swirling around the building over this assessment especially with the housing market and economy the way it is now.
