Charter schools also operate on little more than half the per student operating budget that the non-charter public schools do. So for people whose hot button issue with public schools is wasted money (and thus, taxes), the charter school model should be attractive.

ugh!

Charter schools are public schools!

Charters schools can and have been unionized.

the difference between PUBLIC Charter Schools and PUBLIC District Schools is precisely that, charter schools are run separate from the local school district.

Charters schools are their own individual school district and run independent from the local school board

Charter schools are held to the same standards, same curriculum, and same regulations as public district schools.

Charter schools are freed from the bureaucracy of local school districts and can make their own decisions, quicker to respond to needs and freer from local politics.

There is no right or wrong. However charter schools tend to be smaller and can be good testing grounds for different educational models. some charter schools have been very successful, some have dramatically failed. while there are a few specific exceptions, across the board, charter schools do not perform better than public district schools. charter schools are more tightly held accountable and can have their charter pulled and closed by the state.

......... so lets at least understand that public charter schools are public and at least in Jersey City a viable tool to complement our public district schools.

Fancy charters? paid for by tax payer money? In what galaxy? I cannot speak for all charters, but all LCCS teachers are state certified. Many have their masters degrees, and if not, are in school to get them.

It might have been around for 24 years, primarily for shopping. The restaurants and bars in that area tend to come and go a lot more than other establishments of downtown.

And for all those highrise that are rental buildings, they are pretty transiant to say the least just look at Manhattan which is around 75% rentals. Used to be more, but today they are called co-ops, rarely do they become condos. Rarely do you hear of a new building being a co-op over there usually always a condo.

Going from rental to condo is rare, since most of the time the owner/sponsor wants more money they they will get from the sale of the units. In some cases it is the mortgage on the building, which they don't want to pay off with the proceeds and that is why part of the maintenance is a tax write off for them and not with a condo. Once the mortgage on the building, not the units gets paid off then it can go condo.

I agree and also believe that if more new/middle class families would become part of our public schools (citywide), our schools by all measures would improve. the strongest indicators of a student's educational success are demographics/class - income (vs poverty), parental education, health and PEER pressure, so by greater diversifying our student base, all can benefit.

Our local schools need to become strong learning communities fostering the involvement of families AND a participating role for the surrounding community/neighborhood.

I find Sterling Waterman an excellant Board of Education candidate and hope those concerned understand both importance and difficulty in getting out the vote; and be active in getting friends and neighbors to the polls on April 20th, 2pm to 9pm or voting by absentee ballot.

He is a public district school parent who has been a knowledgeable advocate on behalf children and families. I believe that in Sterling, you will find a strong leader and partner to join in your effort (just strikeout "downtown").

If you don't like this year's bad budget news, just wait until next year.

NJ's State Budget deficit is projected to rise from $2.2 Billion in 2010 to a staggering $11 Billion in 2011.

State aid to NJ school systems already eats up more than one-third of the State budget and NJ spends more per student than every other state, but for NY -- and still with mediocre results.

Something will change and it's going to be radical... but the end game is clear.

The future means having to do more, do better and with less.

Gosh,

If they cut too much from school aid, the graduates of public schools won't be as smart as they are now. Same for the dropouts.

And if they cut out half the cops, the other half may have to actually do some work.

And half the lbrarians may mean more books becasue all Jersey City liberarians do is throw out books.

And the parks may not be the wondrous places they are now if several park superintendants are fired...ROFL.

And the thought of only 4 people filling a pothole instead of 9 is too awful to contemplate.

The end of civilization as we know it.

Thank you guys.

I'm going to guess some combo of RE taxes and mortgage insurance accounts for that $200 bucks...most likely the former.
(Oh to live in a town where taxes are $2400 a year.)

Sorry, I had inteded to post this in Real Estate...but all is well.

So it will take time, it isn't an overnight event. It was basically factories and warehouses, with a small amount of the population for the city.

Correction: The Newport Mall which was the HUB of downtown development opened 24 years ago.

It is STILL the current highlight of downtown JC, despite all the spluttering from those who found this cutesy bar or that curtesy restaurant before it went out of business in 2 years. And it has the same stores as any of the thousands of Malls accross the country...good, bad or indifferent.

Yes, I know that Prospect Park or the Brooklyn Museum or the New York beaches or Botannical Gardens cannot possible rival this magnificent mall and soon we will have to beat off New Yorkers with sticks to keep them out. And opening more unzoned sleepy high rises in Jersey City will NOT make things better but quite the opposite. But of course every ugly tower on too small a lot will be extolled in the fake real estate articles...at $5 a word!

Jersey City remains a place to take a short PATH train ride from...to get to work or actually to do ANYTHING worth doing.

Oh gosh, did I forget about the POWERHOUSE and the EMBANKMENT...bite my tongue.

There is nothing wrong with a place to sleep close to work at a reasonable price...that's an HONEST pitch.
But they will NEVER make a silk purse out of the pig's ear that is Jersey City, not with ONE ad or one MILLION ads.

Next ad?
"I lived on Fifth Avenue with 4 bedrooms overlooking Central Park...but oh, the crowds were so awful and the Metropoliitan Museum blocked the view from one of the bedrooms, and it was SO hard to get a cab. So I moved to a studio apartment in Jersey City under the turnpike extension and I am SOOO happy."

You need to seriously consider the reason for the subsidence before spending money on a band-aid fix. Does the sewer line for your row of houses run back there? If it does, then there is the problem that needs addressing.

Thanks for feedback thus far :)

It's a backyard. Basically dirt covered by bricks. The people next door have the same problem and had gravel filled in at least three times in last couple of years. Obviously we need something more permanent to fix this problem.

We live in connected row houses so the only thing separating our yards is a wooden fence on each side. Am worried that if we fix our backyard it will still sink again in future unless our neighbors have their area fixed as well :(

I don't know what the process is, but anyone who is considering a bid should be prepared to do some type of environmental remediation of the site.
I think that its a good bet that there are oil and gas tanks buried beneath, and that they will have to come out, and possibly a good bit of soil as well, before a C of O is issued.
Just something to consider.

Has anyone attended an auction like this and what was your experience.
We are going to bid on two of the properties. But really what are our chances?

Disclosure: Definitely not hipsters (is there an age cut off), but husband has an arts-related company. I will learn pole dancing, and hold free classes if we get one of properties.

McCann is NOT the person we need in the BOE. He is a FELON. Call me crazy, but I have to think that there are plenty of non-felons who will be willing to challenge the status quo.

To those who don't agree with increases in this climate: Don't be be fooled into voting him in because of this one stance he has taken. Non-felons can vote no too!

Christie: High police salaries 'can't be sacrosanct' in budget-cutting process

Governor Christie said Friday that towns could reduce the high police salaries that help make property taxes so expensive in New Jersey by using the spending cap he proposed with the new state budget this week.

Police officers and their salaries "can't be sacrosanct in this process," Christie said while discussing the budget with The Record's editorial board.

+1

Epps is a narcissist and totally corrupt. What a role model for the children of Jersey City. His deceased son Jonathan was the product of an affair he had with the principal of County Prep. My sources tell me that others in BOE administration have slept with Epps on their way up the BOE ladder. And in addition, Epps has gamed the BOE system to give no-bid contacts to cronys.

Hopefully, Schundler steps in to remove Epps before he gets a contract extension. However, I hold out little hope for it.

Often the bank will waive the mortgage ins. on a REO (a property they actually owned) if they do the financing because that property converts directly to them on a default. They will always try to include it in the deal. Sometimes a long standing account or something like a CD account/Investment/IRA account will be enough to have it negotiated out.

Yes that seems about right for property taxes. That being said, if there is no money down, the bank might have some reason to add mortgage insurance (that they would lift when one reach a certain % of equity), which can be ~$100 more.

Re: Need Help Underwstanding Monthly Payment

It probably was the estimated property taxes. This was very common on all my Florida real estate transactions especially the ones with 100% financing. Don't know about Georgia taxes but the amount would be about right for Florida. Lenders don't not want to have to pay taxes on a tax defaulted asset, which they would have to do to retain first position on the property. Many times there is a proviso that when the equity in the property exceeds a certain amount that this stipulation may be lifted. (usually done on a refinance)
