Word has it that they are too big for us to fight. But one could surely start fighting back by looking for alternate sources of enery

And spreading the word about this targedy in the making regarding this NOT welcomed pipeline, and the horrible things they do to our neighboring landowners.

There are plenty of alternates...just saying...

I wonder if a stun gun would work on a dog? I am sure it would would. I am not suggesting the cops stun the dog, they needed to kill it but what about the mother of the little girl who was attacked? Wonder if that would have helped?

what definiately would have helped would have been to neuther or spay that dog's parents. every time I see a pit or some variation of a pit that dog has its balls. almost all the dogs in the animal shelter down by the liberty science center are pitbulls. how about if the owners dont fix their dogs we fix the owners? shouldn't let these ghetto rats have dogs or cats...they cant control their own reproductive behavior let alone their animals.

Are pit bulls really safe to have as pets? I assume they are legal and a dog license can be issued for them, but just the mere name "pit bull" suggests they can never be fully domesticated and should not be pets.

I'm sure now I'm going to get attacked and "bitten" by pit bull owners all over this board - please don't take it personally. It is pure ignorance. Educate me please. It's just that the name "pit bull" puts me off and is frightening enough.

I had heard that a power strip or an over-burdened extension cord had been laid across a mattress while someone was working with power tools or something. It then ignited the mattress. The russians are there now pulling debris out. The ground floor looks almost completely burned. Can't tell too much about the upper floors although they look okay. Gonna be stinky there for awhile.

Thanks for the question. At Thursday's BOE meeting, Terry Dehere, BOE member and Finance Chair, mentioned that he received details of the contract just days before, which was his reason for voting the way he did. At a taping, yesterday, for Talking Politics with Mia Scanga, Gerry McCann mentioned that there is no contract. I say these things because I know even less than these board members and haven't seen any document, contract or otherwise, despite my efforts. As such, i cannot responsibly give my opinion, at least until I get more information.

With that said, in these cynical times it is easy to forget the impact teacher?s have not just on the children in our communities, but on the quality of life for everybody. A good teacher really can be the difference between a child going to college or going to prison. It makes sense then to pay a wage to teachers that attracts the best of them to our schools.

Also, in these times of fiscal crisis, everyone must do their part. So in return for salary increases, concessions should not be out of the question. As I?ve said from the beginning, cuts should start in administration with the many high paid lofty adminstrators than on the backs of hardworking teachers.

But again, honestly, I can?t take a firm stand until I know the details. If I am fortunate enough to be elected to the BOE, I will be proactive in obtaining facts/info on issues that need a vote and will cast my vote when expected.

This contract being in limbo as long as it has certainly benefits no one.

Quite honestly your answer seems kind of wishy-washy. Seems like you are trying to play both political sides of the fence.....I get a good feeling about you and it seems like you are running for all the right reasons. Some of those you are running against will definately not get my vote because of their character deficiencies. Your positions seem well thought out, which is good. Just first impressions based entirely on this thread.

Where exactly in this article does it compare JC to Chelsea? Her reason to move, according to her quotes, was based solely on the apartment. She wanted a nicer place with more windows and amenities. You're the one who raised the area comparison.

People need to actually read these stories a little more closely before launching into pre-determined rubuttals. And for those who think the papers are filled with developer-paid positive stories, you should actually read the paper once in a while instead of waiting to get your news on these sites. If you did, you'd realize the real estate coverage, particularly in the Times, has been much more negative than not.

don't know -- managers have different level of input, depending on the workplace. . was he a fiscal manager, with some input into financial stuff, or operations manager?

i think background of a candidate (family, schools, jobs held)can be relevant -- can give insight into their world view, etc.

as of now, I don't know that much about waterman beyond fact that he is pto president -- i know at some schools, people have to beg parents to get on board and involved and "run" for office, so merely holding such a position, while is positive, in that he s getting involved, doesn't necessarily say more beyond that --

who did he run against, what is his level of involvement, how many people actually show up at the parent meetings, what things have been implemented under his leadership, how many others on the pto board contribute, etc?

I'm not saying he's not a good candidate -- but really don't know much about him or his positions beyond the generalities like saying nice things (who would argue that teachers aren't influential?) -- he is a blank slate, and as such, I want to know more about his background, before latching on and proclaiming him as a positive addition to the board.

I'll keep an open mind, though. It's just we've been burned in the past with candidates we thought were going to be a positive chance, and then doesn't pan out.

While voting you into office may be part of the solution, isn't part of the problem the utter lack of transparency ?
Does anyone have access to any sort of remotely detailed information regarding the JC school budget?
Try taking a look at the board of ed's meeting minutes. They are formatted purposefully to discourage people from reading through them. If they wanted people to read them, they could just post them in text or PDF format in a single file...

Jersey City police shoot and kill pit bull after dog attacks child, witness says
By The Jersey Journal
March 21, 2010, 12:21PM

Jersey City police shot and killed a pit bull this morning at Lafayette Park after the dog attacked a little girl, according to freelance photographer Joe Shine.

The police shot the dog twice, Shine said.

The girl, who was with her mother and siblings at the park opposite School 22 on Van Horne Street, appeared to be okay, Shine said.

Police did not immediately return phone calls to comment.

=====================

Aggressive, unleashed dogs have been an ongoing problem in our neighborhood. More correctly, the owners who raise dogs to be aggressive and let them roam free have been an ongoing problem. I really hope this sends a message to them.

Has anyone else noticed all the rubber bands left on stoops or entrance-ways or sidewalks by our local postal carriers? I know they bundle the mail with them, & apparently some carriers just let them fall where they may when unbundling.

I'm going to give a call to our main post offiice & offer a suggestion that the carriers stash the rubber bands instead of littering the neighborhood.

Yes everyone is okay and got out. Very scarey. I asked a firefighter what happened and he said they thought it may have been a mattress that caught fire on the first floor.

The jerk landlord was out there watching. I also know that the people that live on the third floor have 2 dogs, and the fire escape was in such bad shape that he could hardly get down alone. Thank God someone was there to help him with his two dogs.

What a shame that Vlad gets away with so much crap in this neighborhood.
I am glad that everyone is okay

Re: Sterling Waterman -- Candidate for JC Board of Education 2010

is this sterling waterman who once worked as the office manager for "Edison Schools,Inc?"

I think they were the company behind schools like Schomburg Charter, a clearly "failing" school by several markers-- test scores, ridiculously high administration and staff turnover -- often kids who couldn't "make it" in the non-charter JCPSchools were often sent to Schomburg by their parents as a last resort.

On the website, PARENTS ADVOCATING SCHOOL ACCOUNTABILITY, this was their take on these "Edison Schools":

"Controversial, for-profit Edison Schools, once hailed as the salvation of public education, has fallen from glory as what seemed like visionary ideas turned out to be just a sales pitch. In its heyday, Edison claimed that it could run public schools for less money than school districts could. The company dropped that claim as dismayed clients complained about its extra costs.

Edison's boasts that it could improve student achievement while making a profit fell just as flat.

Edison's student achievement has been mixed at best, and its claims about academic improvement never held up to scrutiny. A July 2002 New York Times analysis of Edison's claims found that the troubled Cleveland, Ohio, school system achieved higher gains than Edison's schools when analyzed with the methodology Edison applied to its own schools' achievement.

The notion of making a profit collapsed too. Edison Schools lost millions of dollars every year, showing a profit in just one quarter of the 10 years it made its finances public.

Edison's stock was publicly traded on the NASDAQ for four years. After reaching a high of close to $40 per share in early 2001, the share value tumbled to a low of 14 cents. In November 2003, the company was taken private in a buyout which paid only $1.75 per share. It was shortly after the buyout that Edison posted its lone profitable quarter, and then immediately ceased providing any public disclosure of its finances. The company has never indicated that it was able to maintain profitability for more than the one quarter.

After losing many contracts - along with its media luster -- Edison quietly began moving away from its original mission of "revolutionizing" public education, and into marketing conventional supplemental services such as testing, summer school and tutoring. Almost all of its new business involves providing such services rather than trying to manage schools.

Edison attracted ideological support from backers of privatization and school vouchers, and from such powerful conservative bastions as the Wall Street Journal editorial board and the Hoover Institution. But its name is no longer mentioned when "school reform" supporters talk about solutions for public education."

So is the Mr. Sterling Waterman who was with Edison the same one now running for the JC School Board?

You haven't LIVED til you spent a Winter with both upstairs and downstairs gone for the entire season. With a 50 degree concrete slab above you and below you, you are in misery no matter HOW much pricey electric heat you try to pump in. Ten minutes after your 5,000 Watt heater kick off you are cold again. I had 2 Winters like that...I'll move before it happens again.

I once did a quick calculation of the heat required to warm my ceiling or myy floor. THe result was 6,728 BTU's to raise the temperature of one slab one degree. It would be 14,000 BTU's for both...and that's one degree. An empty apartment in my complex often has temperatures in the low 50's. It is a case of beggar thy neighbor at its worst.

A neighbor on my floor had a $418 electric bill for January...and she keeps her place chilly.

And always remember that gas heat is less than a third the cost of electricity, maybe much less but I haven't done the numbers with the current higher electric rates.

For me, I will NEVER move into a place with motel style heating again.
