Re: Parking Lot on Warren & Morgan Parking cars on Street?

Of course its a scam, these are public roads and public sidewalks - who knows, somone might be getting a kick back!

Take photos and email - Police / JCPA / City Hall and most importantly the media.
The shame game always gets results

It would be great to have photos showing JCPA 'sailing' past illegally parked cars in your collection to pass on.

Send an email to Fulop too.

Back pack full of electronics would suggest more then one item.
Everyone walks around downtown with back packs, on this occasion the thief got lucky and Healy is an honest man!

Melissa you fool - standing side by side with a felon with little regard for the law doesn't give you any credibility of making wise choices or moral standings.

Sorry Melissa, but with that sort of blind loyality, I wouldn't vote for you to run to the store to fetch me a can of coke.

McCann must be hung like a horse or he has promised you some sort of position if elected - Pity you don't put the community first !

Stupid is as stupid does.

Thank you Tranzplant.

Does Jersey City really deserve a Board of Ed that will do the least harm? Maybe we do, if that's all we ask of it. But it hasn't been enough to keep it out of this deep, dark hole that the school system has found itself. A hole deep enough the State of New Jersey had to step in.
We, as a city, lack the ability to take care of our children. In a sense, we have "lost custody" of our kids.

DWI, felony, conflict of interest, self serving, disgraceful public defecation and so on and so on. I feel like I'm describing an abusive parent or a youth at risk.

I don't want the children of Jersey City to have those qualities set before them as a role model. I don't want to provide authority over our tax dollars, let alone our access to children to person with such history. Many of these kids can't escape such abusive dysfunction in their own homes.
Shame on us if we don't say enough is enough.

It is not enough for me to find someone to serve on the Jersey City Board of Education who will do least harm. If it was enough for me, Gerry McCann would certainly not be that candidate.

I would like to know how Gerry McCann was given the right to run and hold public office.
Like it or not, conviction of felony means one's life is changed forever.

Mia,

Gerald McCann is a CONVICTED FELON THIEF and you endorse him claiming that he is somehow going to save taxpayer's money!?! How is a thief THE GUY who is going to get us out of our financial mess?

He also was convicted of Drunk Driving in 1995 (New York Times April 15 1997)

Judge John C. Lifland of Federal District Court ruled that Mr. McCann had also violated the terms of his supervised release program by drinking excessively.(New York Times April 15 1997)

The man is a REPEAT CRIMINAL and this is the guy you want to turn to because of our tough economic times?

This is the kind of role model you want for the children in Jersey City? You want to send the message to them: "Hey kids you can commit serious crimes and then become an important leader in our city just because you hate your teachers".

Mia you just lost any credibility as far as I am concerned I am going to go take myself off the Mia Scanga email list. The most telling thing in your endorsement is that it is his personality you have a problem with and not his multiple serious criminal convictions.

I have to get out of this town.

I really like the MapMyRide site for looking at new routes. You can see what other people have done, or make your own, add notes for hazards or notable spots. They have a version for runners as well.

You should be ashamed of yourself Mia for endorsing Gerry McCann. Besides being a convicted felon, the man has tried to manipulate the BOE to serve his own personal business interests. And this goes far beyond "his personality". The man stole the votes of infirmed senior citizens to get elected the first time. How you choose to ignore McCann's continuing string of ethical misdeeds is amazing.

Vote Tuesday..... BOE Endorsements....
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

My 2 cents - Endorsements for BOE
In my 27 years as a homeowner and taxpayer in JC, I don't remember ever voting for a great candidate. It's always been trying to select the ones who will do the least damage, won't sell us out for a few bucks nor are beholden/ puppets of the County or know nothing. This election is no different. In these times of major cutbacks in state aid, which as an Abbott school district and an on-again- off- again Distressed City ( JC ), the stakes are high.

As the state has turned over jurisdiction of the JC schools back to local control, the unabated JC taxpayers are being forced to pay a greater share of the $619 million budget. For years activists such as myself have been complaining to the City Council to stop with the tax abatements since tax abated properties pay no school taxes and all monies go to the city, which has been squandered in uncontrolled patronage. We knew this day would come.

Our school taxes will be going up another 10% effective with the new school budget, which begins July 1st. The teachers have been without a contract since September 1, 2009. In light of state-wide cuts in state aid to schools, which impacted JC with a loss of $27 million and we were lucky, their demands are unconscionable. Demands for annual raises of 4.35 to 4.7% for a four year contract are unsupportable. This coming school year alone there will be over 350 layoffs plus a 10% tax increase. Governor Christie has stated that he'll cut state aid even further if contracts with greater than 4% raises are awarded. Now JC taxpayers only pay about 16% of the budget, which has been going up. The lion's share of the school budget is paid by the state. We can't afford to piss Christie off and quite frankly if other school districts are renegotiating their contracts and teachers are agreeing to a 1 year salary freeze, why can't Jersey City's? Are we richer than Montclair and other suburbs, whose teachers agreed to a 1 year freeze? These suburbs are pretty fed up with carrying the Abbott Districts like Jersey City.

We need board members who will stand up to the teachers' union like Jerry McCann (11A). By orchestrating the defeat of the contract, the teachers, under recently passed state law, will pay a measly 1.5% or on average $750 PER YEAR for their insurance but we save $4 million in health insurance costs! Listen I don't care for his personality either but these economic times demand tough people who can read a budget and financials.....

My second choice is Sterling Waterman (3A) who regularly attends Board of Ed meetings so he has some idea what's going on, unlike the other candidates. My only reservation is that now that he's supported by the Teachers' Union he is anti- school choice. The charter schools on average get about 67% of the funding we spend on regular (non-special ed) students. Many are doing a fine job.

As for third choice.... I'm torn.... Carol Lester (5A) is a former charter school board president but buckled too easily in her support of the teachers' union and no cuts in teachers. Admin cuts will not close the deficit. It's been repeatedly mentioned that over 1,100 teachers have no classroom assignments Plus the district spends over $30 million in consultants. Wonder how many of them are "rubber room" teachers who have complaints filed against them? Dr Epps is ultimately responsible for this.
Terry Dehere ( 4A ) voted No on the teachers' contract , which is good, but on TP when asked about Dr Epps's performance he thought he was doing a good job. I disagree and feel he should be replaced when his contract is up 6/30/2011. The teachers' contract and extending Dr Epps' contract are 2 issues that the next board will be voting on immediately.

The school board election is Tuesday, April 20th.... PLEASE VOTE! It's a LOW turn-out election so EVERY VOTE COUNTS. Last year only 5% of Jersey City's electorate voted.

I don't think the boardwalk continues beyond Port Liberte.

I've run and biked beyond Port Liberte, along Chapel Ave
If you cross the service roads you would ride through beautiful Bayview Cemetery into Greenville.
I have tried to continue south from Port Liberte, along the waterfront, but I couldn't see a route that worked.
I do think it's worth a good study of the map. I would love to get to know Bayonne and the parks in that area--there's a great park along the Hackensack River near Rt. 440.

You can also consider incorporating Lincoln Park--there are bike paths. I've had some nice rides there--it would require a bit of figuring to get a real route there, because it is somewhat isolated with lots of former industrial areas.
There is a movement to create a real bike route /connected riverwalk along the Hackensack River and an effort to get a route from Newark through Jersey City and Secaucus as part of a greenbelt. We (those looking for bike routes) should get behind this effort.

In LSP, I've gone as far as the end of the Point Liberte development - how much further does the boardwalk/bike path go? It would be nice if there was somewhere online that had a map of the boardwalk, but I can't seem to find one anywhere.

Another interesting historical tidbit on McCann. What a great example he sets for children:

Ex-Mayor Must Stay Home
By ANDY NEWMAN
New York Times
Published: April 15, 1997

JERSEY CITY? April has been a cruel month indeed for former Jersey City Mayor Gerald McCann. Ten days after a judge ruled that he could not run for his old job because he was still technically serving part of a tax fraud sentence, Mr. McCann was ordered yesterday to serve six months under house arrest for failing to report a 1995 drunken-driving arrest to his probation officer. Judge John C. Lifland of Federal District Court ruled that Mr. McCann had also violated the terms of his supervised release program by drinking excessively.

Although Mr. McCann's plans to run for mayor in next month's election have been dashed, the judge granted him two hours of freedom per day to campaign for City Council candidates. Councilwoman Melissa Holloway said she would still campaign beside Mr. McCann. ''His personal life's gone haywire,'' she said, ''but we will go on out there and continue on.''

I'll second this. Great food, but I could do without the screaming kids. I don't mind children, but the past two times we've tried to go in there it's like romper room in there, 5+ toddlers tossing half-eaten food and screaming.

I suppose it probably becomes a lot more civil in there after 10 o'clock.

The City should have them clean it up or go after the money it's going to cost to do it. They appeared in my neighborhood on Kennedy, seemingly overnight. City doesn't have any funds to squander.

re- LSP, you can continue south thru wetlands from the boat launch area just before the entrance to the golf course. beautiful.

go local roads to Washington Park - Heights, Lincoln Park Westside, avoid the wide roads like Montgomery or Kennedy.

take the PATH to the Hudson River / Manhattan Waterfront Greenway. Pick up by WTC or Christopher St PATH stations, WTC is easier. see map - http://www.transalt.org/files/resources/mapwaterfront.html

and look for the JC Ward Tour coming May 23rd! visit http://www.bikejc.org/

Yes, I've biked through Liberty State Park many a time (that's the "south along the waterfront" option I mentioned above).

As far as the Palisades, I'd love to try that sometime, but I usually only have an hour to an hour-and-a-half to go biking (i.e. during my son's naptime). In that time frame and at my pace, I can probably make it to the start of the Pallisades and back home. I haven't gone that far yet (I've only gone as far as the middle of Weehauken), but maybe I'll try that out this week. Thank you for the suggestion!

I have seen it twice over the last few years, once while stopped at a light on Summit and Congress, and another time while visiting a friend who lived on Central Ave. While sitting on the steps outside her house we saw a transaction across the street in front of Washington Park. She mentioned she had seen this happen a few times and after she called the police, they were already gone.

Re: City Hires Former Mayor and Felon, Gerry McCann

Campaign signs are hanging all over county and city roads on public property including light poles. Every light pole in front of the Hudson County Courthouse has a campaign poster for the Patel, DeHere, McCann Team. This is illegal and a gross amount of taxpayer funds will be expended cleaning it up.

I am enclosing the Jersey City Municipal Code, Chapter 81 on Advertising Materials, Article 1 Governing the Posting of Handbills and Signs. This code clearly indicates that this practice of hanging campaign literature on public property is illegal and punishable.

The members of the Jersey City Teachers Union are not at all surprised to discover that one of the candidates on these illegally posted ads is Gerry McCann himself, a former felon. He is up to unscrupulous business as usual.

Jersey City teachers are outraged that these signs are littering our public property. They are glued on to the light poles, not taped or stapled, and will therefore leave filth behind for years to come. The message being sent to the young people of our City is, "It is ok to deface public property."

Gerry McCann and company speak of saving taxes, yet are costing the city taxpayers unknown amounts of money to clean up their waste.

We are calling upon all Jersey City enforcement agencies to crack down on candidates who illegally post signs on public property by enforcing the local municipal laws.

The Jersey City police department should detain all who break this law which negatively impacts the quality of life of all residents. The Department of Public Works should begin an audit of all signs hanging on public poles and issue a fine to the Patel, McCann, and Dehere team for the cleanup of this mess.

McCann, Patel and Dehere are hypocritical when they say they want to save tax dollars. They say they want to save tax dollars. But their actions are contrary. They are arrogantly and belligerently ignoring the laws in the City of Jersey City and their mess will cost taxpayers if this is ignored.

This is not the first time that Gerry McCann broke the law, but it should be the last.

The signs hanging on public property right outside the Hudson County Courthouse, a justice building, are the most offensive. Let?s start there.

Stop having Jersey City taxpayers, public school teachers and parents clean up and pay for Gerry McCann?s mess! We?re already paying his salary at the Jersey City incinerator authority. Isn?t that enough?!

Have you ever ridden up to Palisades Interstate Park? If you go early on a weekend morning, you can ride up River Road most of the way (through Weehawken, West New York and Edgewater) to get there without much traffic - again, go early, like before 7. Anyhoo - the park is fantastic for cycling.
