I never thought much of Morris Canal Park before I had a kid. Now I see it as a much needed, nearby and grassy retreat for my ever curious toddler. I do, however, find myself grossed out by poop and pee and scared by dogs off their leash.

Let me note that I am absolutely a dog lover and realize that dogs need parks too. I think that dog owners must be equally frustrated by curious kids and having to leash their dog (those that do).

I could go to VVP, but the same argument could be made for the dogs. So my questions is - who is Morris Canal for? Dogs or kids? Does anyone want to see changes made (i.e. a dog run) so everyone can happily (and safely) use it?

Long after you have moved to the suburbs for the better and safer school systems the dogs will be there enjoying the park.

I didn't used to feel gouged at Downtown. In fact, I would sing their praises for being so reasonable. But it seems like lately it's getting out of hand. I questioned the need for an expensive blood test recently (after spending - literally - many thousands of dollars on pet care there) and Dr. Tudor had the gall to give me that "well, if you *cared* about your pet's health..." routine. I wanted to throw my wallet at his head.

I still think their quality of care is good, but I'm ready to check out some place equally capable but less spendy. Thanks for the recommendations, everybody.

Bring on the gourmet sandwich - The Stockinette Knitting Cafe

Bring on the gourmet sandwich.

Tempt them with a braised chicken BLT. Persuade them with black forest ham and smoked Gouda. Close the deal when you offer them a roast turkey affair with white cheddar, caramelized onions and smoked chili aioli. Assure them that the NY Times called their creator "strong, bold, witty and memorable" when it reviewed her former kitchen, OX.

Nicole Puzio is back at the Stockinette. Four kinds of sandwiches but one choice. Come by.

JUST VOTE NO!

You have two hours to do so.

Vote NO to another property tax increase. Time for the Dept of Education and School Board to start living within their means.

Cut the waste first.

Recycling confusion
Newbie
Newbie

We just moved about 10 blocks within the Grove St area, and I am now thoroughly confused about recycling.

Previously: No recycling of any plastics other than # 1 & 2, no recycling any cardboard other than corrugated (no cereal boxes or other shiny paperboard), and all plastics & glass go into clear plastic bags. This was picked up no problem every week, and fell in line with Hudson County Improvement Authority's guidelines for recycling.

In the new apt: signs posted say to put the shiny paperboard such as cereal or juice containers with the plastics, that we can recycle detergent & shampoo bottles, and all recyclables must go in reusable plastic bins, absolutely no plastic bags. This falls in line with Jersey City Incinerator Authority's guidelines for recycling.

What's the deal???

Re: Local Veterinarian

I also recommend Secaucus Animal Hospital. I have seen both Dr. Hatch and Dr. Cavedo, and they are both great vets. Better than most human doctors. They look at the whole picture, and a more holistic approach to care. (And by that, I mean they look at what is going on with the entire body, and working from there, rather than just the obvious issue.)

You can tell that they both love animals and really care about giving the best treatment.

Also, although the office visit fee is the same as Downtown Vets, all in all they are less expensive, because they seem to take a more wait and see approach. I took my animals to Downtown for a long time, and the standard there was to test for everything, and then see what happened. I love my pets, but it did wind up being very expensive, and a lot of what they did felt unnecessary. Also, a lot of the vets there would push products on you, which I didn't like.
