Just so you know the facts.Thats not plywood its Densglass which actually comes in different colors according to its water resistance.yellow being the least and purple being the best.Plywood would have rotted in the first year.

Did they use different colors for a funky affect, probably.

Give the thing a chance people.

I settled in JC after I realized that I couldn't afford hoboken. I grew up in Union county and moved to Hoboken b/c of the short commute to NYC . I bought buy my condo in '02 and I fell in love with Hamilton Park neighborhood. I can't see myself anywhere else.

I was worried about that too! Next time I'm definitely in.

Congrats to everyone that put the tour together. Looked like fun.
I'll do it next year!

As far as the love connection goes, good luck with that, just don't talk about politics, unless your boy in blue is a fellow Republican!

Re: Newark Avenue StreetScape

Actually a lot of the storefronts east of Jersey Ave are in the process of being rehabilitated. If you walk / drive / bike by there during a weekday there are 3 or 4 that are under construction but usually on the weekends or in the evenings they are back to looking like abandoned buildings. It is true that there is not yet a critical mass to draw in outside shoppers yet, which probably hurts specialty shops and boutiques more than anything, but the restaurants seem busier each year that passes. Also significant now are the opening of two new larger residential buildings -- 215 Newark Avenue and Crescent Court back under the Turnpike. These aren't adding huge numbers of people like Grove Pointe, but still its adding big groups of people that basically must walk down Newark Avenue to and from the the PATH.

Unless there are destination stores, I do not see how the area makes sense for commercial establishments. There is no parking and the area is not that densely populated. People can just drive to Newport.

Lots of terrible things happened to lots of people during lots of wars in lots of places all throughout history. This thing has to do with a conflict between Poland and Russia. What is it doing here? Can't we think of something a bit more positive to welcome NYC travelers to Jersey City with?

Not sure on that one but as someone who lives in NJ and works in NYC I can give you a tax tip that saves a ton of money unless you are tied to your desk.

Anytime you travel outside the state of NY for work all those days are taxed at the lower NJ Income tax rate, also holidays and vacations get taxed at this lower rate.

With vacation and other paid time off not to mention work travel i think 20 weeks had to be taxed at the lower NJ rate for me.

DCs is close and that's great. Other plus's are Shoprite, NYC view, and you're close to lightrail. Foodwise, there's lot of good mexican closeby and some good italian on Central. Many Hoboken restaurants will deliver along with Rasoi and other Newark Ave indian joints. This area of the Heights ain't Kansas but it's safer than where you're coming from and we've never had an issue. I had more safety issues living on Van Vorst park than I do here on Ogden.

Very helpful. I wouldn't mind being closer to DCs at all!

I married into JC. I am from Texas originally and was living in NYC when I met my husband. I never would have chosen to live here but absolutely love our house and have learned to like downtown.

I grew up in NJ, but was living in Inwood and working downtown. I ran into a friend who was a real estate agent who talked me into buying a two family house in the heights. I was 24 then, not so concerned about the kinds of things I would be looking at now if I was buying. But, 10 years later, I've been able to invest a lot into it and I absolutely love my place.

I'd like to see more restaurants though and would also like Pershing Field to fix up the tennis courts and track!

I ultimately went with the Hearos, and I swear by them. The noise goes on, but I sleep like a rock every night.

Best of luck.

LOL more ear plug recommendations. I should just rename the title to "What is the best ear plugs for noise cancellation?"

But seriously, I was just looking to see if anyone near by that day had the same issue. And if it does become a problem. Is there anyone I can contact to maybe speak with them and work something else out. That's all. Hopefully this will be a one time thing and I won't even need to bring this up again.

While I agree that visiting a neighborhood at various times is absolutely a good idea, there's lots of blocks, mine at 7th & Monmouth included, where at 10 on a friday you would definitely get the wrong idea of the general feel of the place.

It's not the best of areas and is quite noisy with bus and ambulance traffic (Christ Hospital is right down the street).

As with any area that someone intends to move to, just go hang out there at regular intervals. In this case, Friday night at about 10pm should provide your answer pretty quickly.

Go further into the Heights for a more neighborhood feel.

no...this neighborhood has LOTS of bodegas, a mexican restaurant, a pizza joint, a spanish rest, some hair cutting places, an old jewelry shop, a sneaker shop, 3 laundromats, the new fire station, a daycare place. its not hoboken but its certainly has a few choices to go eat or shop. and central avenue is a few blocks up so you can get some food up there.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. My current neighborhood has 2 bodegas and a laundromat-- that's it. Nowhere to get takeout or grab a beer. Is this neighborhood the same?

So, after years of lurking about, two posts today pushed me to register and reply.
My husband and I moved to the Lower East Side almost 20 years ago and eventually had a baby. Then wanting a better apartment, we moved to Greenpoint Brooklyn. When our older daughter was ready for kindergarten we faced a choice, private school, or public school. Friends of ours had moved to Hoboken where they found a brand new charter school for their daughter. We thought we'd give home ownership and charter schools a try, and we bought a home in the Heights on Ogden, 10 years ago. Now our oldest attends McNair and our younger daughter is in the charter school we love (Elysian in Hoboken). So odd as it sounds, we moved to Jersey City for the schools. Now if only the Heights had come along like the LES and Williamsburg Greenpoint. . . . . .

The last Revaluation took place 1988 and Downtown JC received the highest assessment. Commerical properties decreased and tax abated properties were not affected. Not sure about the salary, but we have a full time super and we have a 60 unit building. I think you should take stock of what is being required of the super. General maintenance meaning keeping the rugs clean and the property maintained vs. asking them to repair walls or replace the treds in the hallway or electrical/plumbing work. you should be fair to this person because 50 units may not seem like alot but for 1 person to maintain it might.
