I don't think you'll find a cop or fireman in the world who has a libertarian problem with seat belt laws. Not because they're all authoritarian maniacs who love bending society to their will. It's because they see the end result of people not wearing seat belts. I would think that after a few horrific accident scenes your opinion on the subject would start to change.

It's a great neighborhood, with a great neighborhood association - Riverview - if there is a problem with noise, crime, dog poo in the park, ie.: the regular stuff of most neighborhoods.

Ogden Avenue to the east is one of the best streets in the city, you have a great park with a skyline view, an elevator down the cliffs to Hoboken and lightrail a few blocks away - cool ethnic restaurants, not fancy but reliable on Central Avenue to the west which also has most basics (and great dollar stores). Transportation rocks, both to NYC and local - the jitneys run downtown every 3 minutes.

There are slumlords here, like everywhere - but you can get bigger spaces for less money, more light and it's even cooler in the summer - we're 10 stories up and get a great river breeze.

Is there an age limit on the slides? Can I, as an adult, enjoy them too when there aren't any kids around? Best play ground I've seen. Lucky kids.

I see these people outside my house. If I don't say anything to them, they'll just let their dog crap and pee in from of my stairs. I almost saw a lady who was ready to walk away, i told her she better pick it up....you just learn to walk with your head down.

Bail set at $750,000 cash for 4 accused in Jersey City 'revenge' murder

By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal
May 25, 2010, 12:49PM

Bail for the four men charged with the possible "revenge'' murder of a Jersey City man shot late Friday has been set at $750,000, cash only, officials told The Jersey Journal today.

The four made their first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Jersey City yesterday but bail was delayed as the charges were upgraded to homicide.

Damont Lester, 25, was shot in the head around 10 p.m. Friday as he said in a car on Bidwell Avenue, near Bergen Avenue. He was declared brain dead on Saturday and died Sunday after his family took him off life support, officials said.

Charged with his murder are: Thomas Borders, 22, of Seaview Avenue in Jersey City; Borders' cousin Laquan Borders, 21, of Carteret; Rashaad Glover, 22, of Bayonne; and Amir Fant, 20, of Duncan Avenue in Jersey City, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said today.

Police say the men pulled up alongside Lester in a four-door Buick and fired several shots at him. An officer on patrol saw the Buick speeding away and chased the vehicle until cornering it at a dead end on Grant Avenue, police said. Officials said Glover was sitting in the front passenger seat with a .380-caliber handgun.

Four spent .380-caliber rounds were found at the crime scene. A .40-caliber Glock handgun was also found in the car, police said.

The victim was in prison from May 15 to Aug. 19, 2007, for aggravated assault involving a firearm, state corrections records say.

His murder may have been an act of revenge stemming from a shooting last week in the Curries Woods housing complex, officials said.

My friend lived near there all her life and there was never a problem. Central Avenue is close enough to walk to, so there are places to eat nearby. Again, as you know, there is no perfect place to live where crime never happens, but from my experience it this isn't a bad area.

This thing called the Light Rail...

Light Rail doesn't go to Manhattan. I've wondered the same thing about the practicality of the location - this isn't just a Hilton, it's the up, up, upscale "Conrad" version. Five stars. You think someone staying there is going to want to take the PATH to the Light Rail? The only thing I can figure is that they will either run their own ferry or subsidize NY Waterway the way Goldman does. Even if people take a cab or car service, you never know about traffic getting into the tunnel. Getting out of lower Manhattan can often take a half hour - again, not in keeping with the clientele. This thing has disaster written all over it.

On a separate note - the guys taking out the trees aren't wearing masks of any sort. Odd, since there is about $3.5 million of the $8 million the city is guaranteeing that is allocated to remediating all the chromium, etc. that is buried there.

gross. I cannot stand that people use other people's trash cans, take your crap home with you! We don't ever leave ours out for this very reason. We keep them in the backyard. It is hilarious that everyone who owns a dog says they clean up after it and curb it yet the poop runs aplenty on every sidewalk from here to hello (that would be everywhere). My favorite is the jerks who let their dogs hike on my front steps. Keeping it classy, JC, keeping it classy. Cannot wait for HP to open and wade through poop to get to the awesome new slides.

Yes, the 6:05am #43 from Gates Avenue and Old Bergen Road and 3:25pm #43 to Gates Avenue and Old Bergen Road start/end at Passaic Street and Clark Street while the 6:15am, 2:20pm and 10:20pm #43 from Exchange Place and the 7:10am and 11:28pm #43 to Exchange Place start/end at Broad Street and Lincoln Park, both in Newark.

On Presidents Day only the 6:05am and 3:25pm trips run, making the #43 scarcer on Newark Avenue than other weekdays/minor holidays.

I live near across from the embankment on a corner brownstone - our trash cans are located at the fence line. They are *loaded* with dog poop each weekend.

I'm happy that so many owners are dilligently cleaning up after their pets and bothered because the trash cans smell like toilets - from half a block away. Yikes! I end up scrubbing them with bleach every other weekend.

So sorry that public cans were removed from Jersey Avenue. Dog owners have no choice, I guess, than to look for the closest can.

They should let Toll Brothers develop the Metro Plaza Block. They should also re-open Provost and Warren Street to 6th street. That will create more foot traffic thru the PAD which will eventually lead to more developers interested in the Rehabilitation of the old warehouses.

What I would like to Suggest is that when you see someone not picking up after there dog you take a picture of them with your phone and post it on this site. Nothing bothers me more then seeing all the poop around the place. I always pick up after mine and other should to.

Some people just aren't responsible dog owners. I have a dog and I am... Its no fun for responsible dog owners to see poop everywhere either. Gives all dog owners a bad name.

However I have to vent about something almost as bad... People letting dogs pee in places they aren't supposed to... at my building there are more than a few dog owners that let their dog pee right on the steps outside the building. It's disgusting... the steps are completely covered in it. If you live in my building you know what I mean.

I want to complain but I am afraid the building might make some rash decision like not letting dogs stay there any more.

(sorry had to vent)

They opened yesterday and I ordered a few things for dinner to try.

Massaman Curry was good and the Tom Yum soup was tasty. The basil fried rice was really good and I would totally order it again, I couldn't stop eating it.

They didn?t have one or two things but that?s expected on a first night. Overall I would say it's slightly better than average but by no means extraordinary. Nice to have another option in the neighborhood.

I want to revive this topic because as a childless, non-pet owner it bothered me but now that I have children this is now in the forefront of my mind. My son almost picked up some poop in the grass one day in the park. (He runs faster than I do, people in the park think this is hilarious). I can't let him enjoy the grass pet free zones!

Jersey City police say nothing yet points to killer who stabbed 68-year-old man in his apartment on Bergen Ave.

Tuesday, May 25, 2010

Police are still searching for leads in the death of a 68-year-old Jersey City man who was found with multiple stab wounds by his son early Saturday morning.

Robert E. Murphy was found in a pool of blood on his bedroom floor by his son, according to Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio. The son called police at around 3 a.m., shortly after he entered his father's apartment at 6 Bergen Ave., DeFazio said.

Murphy had several stab wounds to his neck and upper torso, DeFazio said, adding that no weapon has been recovered. The son has been interviewed at length and is not being treated as a suspect, he said.

Investigators did not find any cash and think Murphy may have been killed during a robbery, DeFazio said.

The fourth-floor apartment showed no signs of a forced entry and evidence from the scene suggests there may have been a third person with Murphy and his attacker, DeFazio said.

"We still maintain he was familiar with the person or persons who committed this crime, though we believe there to be only one assailant," DeFazio said.

Jersey City man shot in head in apparent revenge attack dies; charges for 4 are upgraded to homicide

Tuesday, May 25, 2010
By TOM SHORTELL
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

The Jersey City man shot in the head Friday in an apparent revenge attack died from his wounds, officials said yesterday.

The bail for the four suspects charged with the shooting was delayed yesterday so the charges could be updated to homicide, officials said.

Thomas Borders, 22, of Seaview Avenue in Jersey City, his cousin Laquan Borders, 21, of Carteret, Rashaad Glover, 22, of Bayonne, and Amir Fant, 20, of Duncan Avenue in Jersey City, all appeared in Central Judicial Processing Court in Jersey City yesterday afternoon, officials said.

The men are charged with fatally shooting Damont Lester, 25, in the head Friday night as he sat in a car on Bidwell Avenue near Bergen Avenue, police said.

Lester was declared brain dead Saturday, and he died Sunday after his family took him off life support, Police Lt. Edgar Martinez said.

Police said the four men pulled up alongside Lester in a 4-door Buick and fired several shots at him.

Police patrolling in the neighborhood saw the Buick speeding from the scene and gave chase, eventually cornering the shooters at a dead end on Grant Avenue, police said.

Officials said Glover was sitting in the front passenger seat with a .380-caliber handgun. Four .380-caliber shells were found at the crime scene. A .40-caliber Glock handgun was also found in the car, police said.

The four men were also charged with eluding police, prohibited weapons, aggravated assault, and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Thomas Borders was additionally charged with certain persons not to have weapons. Laquan Borders, the driver, was given several motor vehicle summons.

Martinez praised Police Officers James Cardinali and Mark Hennessy, who made the arrests. "They took four stone cold killers off the streets," Martinez said.

Police said Lester's shooting may have been an act of revenge stemming from a shooting last week in which a man was shot in the buttocks at the Curries Woods housing complex.
