Years ago, we had noise issues in a condo building. If the building is so poorly constructed that you hear everything going on above you or next door, you need professional help. We hired Acoustilog (acoustilog.com) to analyze our situation. Then got a contractor to carry out the rcommendations. I can't remember how we got to that company in the first place, but it was well worth it. Some small fixes made a really big difference.

And the top 1% also has about 40% of the nation's wealth. They can afford to pay a little more than everyone else.

Also the Founding Fathers imagined that black people should only count as 3/5 of a person. So maybe we shouldn't take everything they envisioned as gospel.

The VIP is an anchor for this neighborhood. It's a place where you can go for breakfast, lunch, dinner, a cup of coffee, desert, seven days a week. I go there all the time to meet friends.
The last thing we need in this area is another drugstore. What we do need are more quality restaurants -- not less.

Moreover, if successful, I fear Walgreens could drive either or both of the Rite-Aids in the neighborhood out of business, and then we'd have one or two big empty storefronts.

Walgreens plans to put up one a one-story drugstore with parking in front and the building itself in back -- similar to the Walgreens at the corner of Kennedy and Communipaw.
To do so, it would require two variances from the Planning Board. That's because current zoning rules require that any new construction there be at least four stories high, with retail on the first floor, with the upper floors for residential and/or office space. In addition, parking woud have to be back.

The city planning division opposes the Walgreens plan. But the decision will be up to the Planning Board, whose members are appointed.

There will be a meeting this Thursday, June 10, at 6 pm in the Caucus Room on the second floor of City Hall, 280 Grove Street. I urge you to attend.

The trash around the court was horrifying and disheartening last couple days. The city should post a sign and police should fine the litterbugs. Unless the litterbugs understand the consquence, not much will change. By the way, I still don't know how often the city cleans the park & empties trash. Does anyone?

I would hardly consider Dalton a real bookstore.
the BN in Hoboken did very well. It was a corporate decision to move- but not because they were not doing well. It was too small.

I'm sorry but if people are going to be rude assholes and litter up the place and take advantage of what they are given, then ban em from the park. I don't care if you live in the country or the city, rude is rude. If you have no social skills, go get some and come back. Until then if you are going to act like an animal, stay out of the park.

I too have joined the cleanup crew and like many others, I don't hesitate to pick up things in the park in the meantime. I am reluctant to do this around the BB court however, and will have mixed feeling doing this even as part of the cleaning crew. My impression is that the kids seeing that will have no reason to change their behavior. Some incentive needs to be attached.

As for the stick one might think of systematically redistributing the trash ON the BB court every night - OK, just joking. Or stopping the games in the middle to cleanup - and asking them to join the crew. At least that would force people to interact which might very well be a factor here, but the impact might be limited due to the short-time interaction. Consistent push however can work sometime, as long as the work and message remains the same and is fact-oriented so people can feel treated fairly.

As for the carrot, am I misguided in not seeing a fountain at the court ? It seems to me that a substantial amount of this trash is made of plastic bottles that the players bring and "dispose off". If they could refill cheaply they might like the free ride and hence reduce the amount of garbage. Otherwise, like others I can only think of a preferably sport-originated authoritative figure to change this.

Yes the BB court is here to stay...

Each of us filled out a form with our contact information. They're asking for a minimum commitment of one day per month of maybe 30 minutes of clean-up time. Can one of the organizers please put info here about who to contact, in case anyone else wants to volunteer?

I still have hope that someone will organize an effort to communicate with the basketball players about participating in keeping the park clean. As was already stated here, complaining on a message board won't do much to solve the problem. I'd rather have someone clean up the court (including me) than not have a court at all simply because it gets trashed.

My wife and I signed up as well. But having a group of people clean up after other people on a daily basis should be the last resort.

Nothing is going to change, unless there is some kind of authority presence in the park enforcing laws.

Simply cleaning up after others is not a solution to the problem.

I have and will pick up trash in the park from time to time as I walk my dog. I will not pick up the trash left by able-bodied young people as they continue to play their games just steps away. You can put a dozen garbage cans there and they will still trash the area. Yes, it's true, I told you so. A basketball court in that park? BAD IDEA. That area would make an excellent community garden though.

No one in particular should necessarily feel obligated to clean the park. But if you're not going to take ownership of ANY area of the park, there's no value in trashing your neighbors who want to, nor continuously complain about every gum wrapper and gatorade bottle you see on the ground. Negative energy does not advance anything. I'm sure that most neighbors could comment on at least one component of the park they don't like. Still the overwhelming majority of people have expressed great appreciation for the outcome and are thrilled with it. I heard one constituent from the Van Vorst Park neighborhood say Hamilton Park reminds her of Savannah, GA. Other neighbors commented on how much bigger it looks with the new design, which makes the lawn areas look bigger. I enjoy seeing people take their coffee and paper in the early morning hours. Also, impressive are the folks who play tennis super early in the am. The benefits go on and on.

I understand your frustration I really do but the fact that the BB courts are there is just not going to change. Your thought process if applied to diffrent scenarios in life would spell fail. Would it make you less frustrated to sit back and watch it be totally trashed and say TOLD YOU SO? They are being trashed by kids. We are adults. I dont live on that side of the park but I cant stand to see what is being done. The more we sit on our computers and bitch about it the more frustrated we become and the more trashed that area of the park becomes. I am not good at organization when it comes to things like this. I need to be told when, where, and what to do.
Someone please take the lead.

I am sure anyone who cannot participate in an organized effort is welcome to clean up in the park as they can.

Any effort will be valuable and appreciated.

There's no point of arguing with the losers on this site who do nothing but rank on their neighbors who have made efforts to improve the neighborhood.

It's better to take action and take care of this gem we are uniquely fortunate to have.

Why are there no signs posted or an officer writing tickets? Time to end the mis-directed hysteria aimed at dog-owners and start a movement to close that court. It is a big open sore on the new park. Shameful.

"Hysteria aimed at dog-owners"? What are you talking about? Please explain.

I think what Vigilante is trying to say is that dog owners have been blamed for years for the condition of the park and leaving it a mess. I understand his direction but it really does not solve the problem. I missed the meeting yesterday beacuse of work. Could someone tell me if we have a plan yet?
I have said this before and I will say it again.... If we do not become part of the solution we become part of the problem. Please tell me how I can help I hate seeing that part of the park trashed.

Slim Shady soars through Newark like a superhero in heavily symbolic new video

Eminem's 'Not Afraid' Video Premieres Resized Image Slim Shady soars through Newark like a superhero in heavily symbolic new clip. By Shaheem Reid - MTV Eminem's video for "Not Afraid," the first offering from his June 22 release Recovery, has premiered. Directed by Richard Lee, the video starts with Eminem standing on a rooftop ledge that overlooks New Jersey. As he says with his opening lines, the clip shifts to a basement, where Slim Shady is rhyming on the steps, then standing. The video goes back to the rooftop, where Em goes closer to edge. The shot could be taken as a metaphor for his life. Last year, the Grammy Award winner very openly told his story of being in a drug-induced haze for years. He said his addiction was so horrific, he almost overdosed and died. Just like in real life, Em stops short of going off the ledge in the video. Instead, he marches on busy Market Street in downtown Newark. As he's walking through traffic, he looks in a car window and his face looks distorted. He suddenly seems to be to walking in a hall of mirrors, where he's forced to take a very close look at himself. Marshall Mathers eventually jumps through one of the mirrors and lands back on Market Street. This time however, instead of being filled with pedestrians, the usually crowded shopping district is empty. (This scene is intercut with one of him back in the basement, breaking through the bricks with his bare fists to reveal a blinding light outside.) Em then walks alone to the end of the block and stops. There is no more street to walk. Civilization has been totally decimated, and everything beyond the block is in ruins. He jumps off the cliff and falls peacefully, but he never hits the bottom. He starts flying out of the abyss and back into the city, which is now filled with people once again. Shady flies so fast down the streets, he breaks car windows when he speeds by. Ultimately, he lands on the same ledge on which he started the video. http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1640835/20100605/story.jhtml

Body of teen shot on Jersey City waterfront is recovered from water

By Nyier Abdou/The Star-Ledger
June 05, 2010, 6:32PM

JERSEY CITY ? A Jersey City teen was shot and killed in a brawl on the waterfront.

Jermaine Williams, 17, was shot at least once in the abdomen and apparently jumped into the Hudson River just after midnight Friday, but his body was not recovered for several hours, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said today.

Joshua Robinson, 30, of Jersey City was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest and weapons possession. He also is going to be charged with Williams? killing, DeFazio said. He said an autopsy today determined Williams drowned, but the gunshot was a contributing factor.

Police were called to the area of 90 Hudson St. late Friday on a report of a disturbance. Officer Johnny Mack, who was working an off-duty job nearby, was first on the scene and discovered a large fight in progress, police spokesman Stan Eason said.

According to Eason, Mack observed two men shooting large-caliber semi-automatic weapons. He ordered the men to drop their weapons, but they ran off.

DeFazio said spent shell casings found at the scene were from a semi-automatic pistol.

Mack chased down and held Robinson, while the second gunman escaped. It was not clear how Williams figured into the gunfight.

Mack did not see Williams get shot, but it was soon evident there was a man in the water. The search in the harbor and along the waterfront was aided by Port Authority police and divers, but Williams? body was not immediately recovered.
Jersey City police divers recovered the teen?s body from the water in the area of Sussex Street shortly before 3 a.m., Eason said.

DeFazio called the incident "disturbing."
"Clearly, this is not a robbery," he said. "It could be gang-related."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor?s Office homicide squad at (201) 915-1345.
