Did someone screw up here ? Could a law suit be pending ?

The only one(s) that "screwed up here" was the kid/his parents who granted permission for a full disclosure, sit down interview with CBS news when the story broke:

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/05/3 ... ng-for-council-president/

THAT'S where his name was identified, THAT'S where the teen continued to perpetrate his lie, and THAT'S where he (not the school), compounded his mistake. It's telling that the reporter noted how "composed" the teen was throughout the "ordeal."

I counsel my young kids again and again about this new ground we walk on - creating our digital footprints - and how many of our choices/decisions will be set in stone digitally unlike anything we've ever seen before.

Re: Jersey City woman says thief stole $12,000 engagement ring from her finger

My engagement ring was a cubic zirconia. My fianc? and I were broke and I thought it utterly ridiculous to spend money on a rock. The joke was on everyone else that thought it was real - it was quite an impressive fake. I think we spent about $100 on it at the time at Macy's.

Fifteen years later, I wear my "upgraded" wedding ring that cost a bit over $1000 on special occasions. When I think of what $20K can do to help the world, and I see that on someone's finger, I get a bit nauseous.

Just a quick heads up - was in Target late this afternoon and saw at least five cars towed away from the lot. They have new red signs (parking for Target shoppers only) throughout the lot with EZ Towing as the company of record for towing.

Don't park there if you're not shopping there!

Interesting story - glad that more parents are finding resources when faced with gender choices amongst their very young children.

However, for the father to fully identify himself in the article is atrocious. Children need to be protected - and the move to advertise the extraordinarily delicate situation their child is going through and memorializing it on the internet for eternity is selfish and self-serving.

We should be having the conversation - yes. But a child should be given the respect and privacy to move through this choice on their own time and own terms without media scrutiny and all that it brings.

Thanks Caj. What I didn't express very well was the thought that the JCPD wouldn't do anything and encourage me to pursue a civil case instead.

I was surprised to learn just how seriously they took this claim today. They're doing a great job with this, listened, were very concerned with the broader implications of the theft scheme, and are taking immediate action.

Thanks East District - it is much appreciated.

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for your replies and ideas. The JCList community is the best!

Caj - your business search was very helpful - great idea.

My husband is meeting with a detective from the East today. From my correspondence with Roomorama, it appears that everything has been cancelled and we have emails to support this. They claim not to release the fees to the host until the renter provides a special code to Roomorama that authorizes payment.

Not sure what to believe from them.

When we attempted to call back Roomorama from a voice mail they left us, the call was connected to a SKYPE account.
We paid for the room with AMEX, so we have a claim into them as well.

Not sure yet if this rises from a civil case to a criminal case. I guess we'll know today. Certainly the person who lives at 225 Grand whose apartment is being used in false advertising should be upset. We've forwarded this info to 225 Grand building management so they're definitely aware this is going on now.

I feel pretty foolish as we're up on most scams. This was a good one.

Just a bit more information after doing a little more research:

The host is from a company named UBlissSuites.com. He has a lot of listings on the net on different platforms including airbnb, etc.

He is advertising apartments for short term rent in downtown Jersey City including:

-70 Greene Street
-225 Grand (funny - not listed on the UBlissSuites website, but this was the location we were promised at Roomorama)
-50 Columbus
-Monaco Towers

We were originally promised 70 Greene, then we were moved to the non-existent apartment at 225 Grand which we paid for and got a confirmation through Roomorama.com.

We just discovered he was using photos of 50 Columbus to advertise the 225 Grand Street unit which we reserved. He has these same photos at another website that advertises the 50 Columbus apartment (UBlissSuites.com).

It looks like he's advertising really good rates at 70 Greene and 225 Grand; making up BS stories about the units availability and then bait and switching to 50 Columbus, if even that's available (not even sure because we wouldn't go the 50 Columbus unit after the scam at 225 Grand.)

Scam Alert - Roomorama for Short Term Rentals/225 Grand
Home away from home
Home away from home

Just a quick heads-up to anyone that is exploring the short-term apartment rental idea in Jersey City instead of securing a hotel for guests.

I was just completely scammed by a "host" affiliated with Roomorama.com. I "rented" a room for ten days for guests and selected a property at 225 Grand Street.
It was confirmed, paid for, and we received an address and room rental number. We saw photos of the room and property - everything appeared to be totally legit.

We checked on the room prior to my guests arriving. The host concocted a story that the 225 Grand Street apartment was suddenly not available because of a "medical emergency." He wanted us to switch to an unseen apartment at 50 Columbus instead - which our guests didn't want. Total bait and switch.

So my husband drove over to 225 Grand, spoke with building management (who were super nice) and was informed they never heard of the company, there was no "medical emergency" at the apartment, and the apartment we were confirmed for couldn't be rented on a short-term basis anyway as a permanent owner/tenant resided there.

Please be aware of this predator company operating in JC.

A Jersey City man who has been arrested 10 times for groping and exposing himself to women on the PATH system has been nabbed again.

Azeez Powell, 32, was arrested Wednesday at his home and charged with criminal sexual contact after a woman told police he touched her on a PATH train, according to Port Authority police spokesman Joe Pantangelo.

The victim, whose age was not available, said Powell touched her Wednesday at about 8:30 a.m. inside a PATH train car at the Newport station, Pentangelo said. The train was headed into New York at the time.

The woman told police, and Powell was identified during the course of the investigation, Pentangelo said.

Powell has been arrested 10 times on similar charges, according to Pentangelo.

Last April, Powell was charged with lewdness and two counts of bail jumping after a woman told police he exposed himself to her on a PATH train as it pulled into the Newport station.

Ward E Teen Litter Crew Rocks - 9th & Marin Today
Home away from home
Home away from home

When Mayor Fulop announced he was hiring teens to pick up trash across the city during the summer, I was more than a little skeptical.

However, I watched a group of kids working today along 9th and Marin and met their supervisor. They were really putting in a great effort and picking up some serious trash and weeds along the street. I was really impressed with what I saw and hope that this continues throughout the summer and beyond.

Their supervisor obviously knew how to motivate these youngsters in a positive way - it was nice to see.

Re: Sunnyside Academy in Port Liberte video captures worker abusing 2 tots: cops

Jersey City day care center where 4 have been charged with child abuse has closed

Link to Story

The Jersey City day care center where four employees have been arrested and charged with child abuse apparently has been closed.

The lights inside Sunnyside Academy, located in Jersey City's Port Liberte section, were off and much the equipment, such as chairs and toys, were neatly tucked away this morning.

Efforts to reach management, both by phone and in person at the day care, were unsuccessful. A real estate agent in Port Liberte and a resident there said that the day care center closed about a week ago.

The investigation into the day care center first began on April 29, when parents picking up their 19-month-old son from Sunnyside discovered that the boy's face was bruised and his lip swollen. The boy's father was then shown video that he says shows an employee from Sunnyside upending the boy from a box he was standing on.

That employee, Ann Bactawar, 26, of Jersey City, was charged with two counts of child abuse and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child on May 1.

Sunnyside Academy, May 2013Sunnyside Academy, located in Port Liberte, has been the center of a child abuse scandal that came to light in April.Jersey Journal file photo

Since then, Young Cha, 29, of Belleville, Annette Rocker, 69, of Palisades Park, and Sutapa Aditya, 41, of Jersey City, have all been charged with child abuse for incidents police say occurred inside the day care.

Cha was charged with slapping a 17-month-old boy on May 9. Rocker was charged with hitting and slapping a 2-year-old on May 23 and Aditya was charged two days ago with pulling a 2-year-old boy across the floor by his hair, authorities said.

Hudson County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Gene Rubino said that the office is sifting through hours of videotape in its investigation and that the day care's closure "has no bearing" on the continuing investigation.

Re: Sandy flood disclosures for rentals?

Home away from home

I looked up the OPs question a bit more - and here's something interesting. NJ law doesn't go as far as to state the unit was flooded, just that the unit is in the flood zone:

Flood zone. Prior to move-in, landlord must inform tenant if rental is in a flood zone or area. (N.J. Stat. Ann. ? 46:8-50)

Re: Sandy flood disclosures for rentals?
Home away from home
Home away from home

The realtor may (or may not) be disclosing what the owner told him or her. If the owner lies to the realtor, there is no way that the realtor would be doing anything illegal.

Tenants need to do their due diligence. If they wish to rent an apartment and have specific needs (like no smoking, no pests, etc), they need to make sure a rider is placed in the lease that gives them a reasonable out-clause if that problem develops during their tenancy. If the landlord doesn't want to do this, then don't rent from that individual.

If you were renting in an area where you could reasonably expect flooding, it's on you as a tenant, to do your homework and make sure you are protected in case flooding occurs. If I'm renting near the river, and I watched the news for two minutes in October, I'd be reasonably aware that I could be moving into a flood zone.

Renters have rights and their guarantee of habitability is clearly outlined in the N.J. tenant right guidelines. These are upheld in court fairly and fully.

Here's a great guide that outlines NJ rental law:

http://www.lsnjlaw.org/Publications/P ... Manuals/TenantsRights.pdf

That all said, you have raised an excellent point. Should owners be legally bound to disclose if a unit flooded? And more importantly, was the unit professionally remediated to prevent problems like mold from occurring? Was the electrical and plumbing corrected with a permit and inspected by the city?

Landlords must disclose lead issues in buildings (although many don't use the proper forms to do so) - so why wouldn't they also disclose buildings that have had fires or floods?

This may be an emerging issue in the city and one the new city council could tackle for the safety of its residents.

Secret List of Birdsall Contributions - Includes HC & JC Pols - Star Ledger

Christopher Baxter/The Star-Ledger

For more than four years, the engineering firm Birdsall Services Group funneled illegal campaign contributions to New Jersey politicians by asking a handful of top employees to write personal checks for $300 or less, which did not have to be reported to the state, and then reimbursing them with salary bonuses.

But one piece of the puzzle ? who received Birdsall's money ? has remained a mystery.

Until now.

A trove of company records obtained by The Star-Ledger exposes for the first time the hundreds of politicians, from mayors and council candidates to county freeholders and some of the most well-known New Jersey powerbrokers, whose campaigns profited from Birdsall's crimes.

Here is the complete list, which is searchable.

Re: Public Safety Director Press Release

While I applaud the new mayor for taking a fresh look at the structure and function of public safety, it seems odd to include funding from a non-profit headed by a sitting council member whose organization's mission statement has nothing really to do with public safety.

Isn't this also a conflict as a 501c3 really shouldn't align itself with political initiatives if it is to remain true to best practices?

Ms. Coleman may also want to update the Guidestar.com records that indicate her organization's non-profit status was revoked. I'm sure this isn't the case, but others are commenting on it negatively in the NJ.com story (comments section):

And another...this just keeps getting more tragic with every turn of the story. Is this place still opened?

Story & Photo - From NJ.com

A daycare center in Jersey City's Port Liberte is in hot water again today after a fourth employee has been accused of abusing a child in her care.

Sutapa Aditya, 41, of Jersey City, a teacher's aide at Sunnyside, was arrested this morning at her home by Hudson County Prosecutor's Office officers. Aditva is charged with endangering the welfare of a child and child abuse.

Aditya is accused of repeatedly assaulting a 24-month-old boy by dragging him across a room by his hair, pushing him to the ground by the back of his head and slapping him on his arms, legs and chest in late April, according to a criminal complaint.

Aditya appeared in person today at Central Judicial Processing court before Judge Margaret Marley, who set Aditya's bail at $50,000.

Aditya is the fourth employee from Sunnyside charged with abusing kids at the Port Liberte daycare center.

On April 30, Sunnyside aide Ann Bactawar, 26, of Jersey City, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and two counts of child abuse after authorities said video surveillance inside the daycare showed Bactawar pushing a boy from a box he was standing on, sending him crashing to the floor.

On May 9, a second employee, Young Cha, 29, of Bellville, was charged with slapping a 17-month-old boy. On May 23, Annette A. Rocker, 69, of Palisades Park, was accused of hitting and slapping a 2 year old.

A woman who answered the phone at Sunnyside this afternoon said she didn't know anything about the new charges and hung up the phone.

Aditya has been ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim or with any minors.

Photo and Story

From NJ.com

BAYONNE- A 36-year-old Jersey City man who is a registered sex offender was arrested yesterday after he was caught masturbating in his car outside Midtown Community School in Bayonne, police said today.

Christopher Arnold, 36, of Magnolia Avenue in Jersey City, was charged with lewdeness and sexual assault following the incident, police said.

An off-duty Jersey City police sergeant who was dropping off his children at the Avenue A school around 8:40 a.m. yesterday when he was approached by a local resident who said he saw a man, later identified as Arnold, masturbating inside his vehicle, police said.

The sergeant approached Arnold and confirmed the witness' observations, police said. The sergeant then contacted Bayonne police, who placed Arnold under arrest.

After checks following his arrest, police discovered that Arnold was on the registered sex offenders list, police said. According to the New Jersey State Police Megan's Law website, Arnold was found guilty in May 2004 of sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child after he sexually assaulted two underage girls, 14 and 15-years-old.

Arnold's bail was set by Hudson County Superior Court Judge Fred Theemling at $1 million and he was detained at the Hudson County jail in Kearny, police said.

He was charged with sexual assault in yesterday's case because his actions could have been seen by children under 13-years-old, authorities said.

Thanks everyone - your feedback was really helpful. Totally agree about the Hyatt, too. Pretty amazed at the high rates for most downtown JC hotels - yeesh. Forgot about the Ramada - didn't know it was still there.

The brownstone on Homeaway was gorgeous, but booked for the days they'll be here. I looked on Airbnb too, but wasn't too comfortable with the setup - looked like too many variables for security issues. Comments from a Philly renter talked about security concerns with the apt. rental concept - particularly that the home's keys could be copied so easily and used for a break in, which is how he suspects all of his valuables were stolen during a stay.

There's a cross road right in front of the entrance to Port Liberte - Chapel Ave - if you go up Chapel Ave and make a left by the cemetery (I don't know what the street is named, so sorry) and continue straight for about a mile, you'll end up on Broadway in Bayonne. Take Broadway all the way down until you see the entrance to the Bayonne Bridge. Get over the Bayonne Bridge 440 south to Staten Island Expressway via the V-N Bridge to Belt Parkway to JFK. That's always the fastest way I've found.

Give yourself time though - you can make it in 45 minutes or be stuck in G-d awful traffic! Good luck.

Sample Ballots for Tuesday's Election?
Home away from home
Home away from home

I cannot seem to find the sample ballots for Tuesday's election. I looked on the HCBOE site and they only have the 5/14 ballots.

Any ideas on where to get copies online?

Not quite sure what to even say about that horrific advertisement. Completely inappropriate for a site like this - but clearly in line with a clueless marketing ethic.

Webbie - please - your discretion in place of someone with none...
