Is this dump being renovated? The only thing I read was that there was an application for a person to person transfer of the liquor licence. It would be great for this eyesore to be renovated and hopefully bring in a better clientele.

It seems that these prices are priced so that if only a handful of customers show the overhead would still pay for itself. I could justify the cost if the portions would suffice to satisfy your appetite but it does not. I had paid $1.35 for a cookie at a rival business but one was satisfying in taste as well as filling. As long as there is a minimal following prices will stay the same.

I happened to stop by the booth they had at LHS on the weekend and saw this phenomenal chocolate walnut cookie... I almost purchased it but then saw that it was 5. yes 5.00 dollars... I mean it wasn't a small cookie, but I couldnt justify a 5.00 dollar cookie no matter how friggen good it looked ( I still dream about it)

There is an egyptian restaurant up on Central Ave name Cleopatra. She pretty much makes what she wants, but when I asked her if she made foul, she said she would love to and would call me when she made it next. She did call, unfortunately I was in Brooklyn that day.... It's a husband/wife business and they are super friendly. my husband and I were the only white folk in there when we go, but they are so happy and accommodating. Try them out!

I live very close to Enos Park where they have baseball games nearly every day during the warm weather season, which is when most people have their windows open. We have the constant noise of the deafening loudspeaker as well as the cheering crowds. This is a city where people live, work and play. Noise comes with the convenience (or inconvenience depending on your point of view) of city life. People live close to hospitals, fire stations, airports, bars and factories ? it's city life. Unfortunately if you want a quiet neighborhood to live in, your best bet is the suburbs.

Hmmmmm.....sounds like you have a real problem here. Is it really that bad? I can help with possible solutions:

*Gather your neighbors and protest.
*Continue to complain on a blog.
*Move

'Cause either way there will be courts, there will be kids playing, and there will be noise. Over and out on this end.

Did those who moved in across the street from them ask about court noise before they bought or leased? Or did they think that kids would just try to play a little quieter?

The courts are here to stay and if you think they're unpopular, ask around.

Comparing a school to a basketball court is a little silly.

I actually moved into my place right around when the park was closing last year. I had no idea it would be this much of a nuisance. Would it have been a deal breaker? Probably not.

And just because the court has been there forever, doesn't mean it should stay there. It's way too close to people's homes. Simple as that.

If you care about any of the above, it is crucial that you stay engaged in the issue of Dr. Epps' illegally procured contract extension.

This would subject our city to three more years of superintendent-failure from a man who refuses to even admit that there is a serious problem in the system. Across-the-board school failure has serious consequences for every single person in our city and while seeking a new superintendent is not a silver bullet, it is folly to stay the course when our current superintendent is failing so dramatically.

I support Sterling Waterman who currently stands alone on the Board of Education in publicly opposing the illegal contract extension granted by his colleagues. It is time for the fence-sitters to drop this nonsense and stand with him.

GP - I read that in today's print JJ. The dopes have the wrong street. It did happen 2 blocks from Lincoln Park , but it was Duncan and Olean. Between Westside and Rt 440(1&9).

PS - if you guys are down that way very nice to see the last of the nasty Duncan projects being gutted.

I will never forget the story from a buddy of mine?s father. He was a cop in JC in the good...err bad old days. He was dispatched to the Duncan Projects for some kind of dispute. When he got there someone tossed a bathtub off of one of the roofs. It almost clipped him!!

Speaking of JC projects here?s another quick one for you new comers who missed all of the fun. There use to be big project towers up on the Boulevard at the Bayonne/JC boarder. A few of the buildings were real close to the Boulevard. You put your car?s and your life in harms way if you drove past them. The rocks and other projectiles would fly off of the roof tops at all times of the day. If the traffic light was red in front of the projects no cars would be stopped at the light. They would be stopped about a block away waiting for the light to turn green. They would then shoot past the projects at full speed.Thank God they are long gone!!.

Developer of Journal Square project asks permission to expand farmers market onto vacant dirt lot

Wednesday, June 30, 2010
By MELISSA HAYES
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

The vast dirt rectangle in the heart of Jersey City's Journal Square won't house two tall towers anytime soon, but developers hope to put the site to good use.

Representatives from MEPT Journal Square Urban Renewal LLC last night asked the Jersey City Planning Board for permission to expand the Journal Square Farmers Market onto its vacant land at 10 Journal Square.

Planning Board members took issue with the site, but not the market, saying the developer must improve the aesthetics of the empty dirt lot.

Vice Chairman Leon Yost said when the board approved the project three years ago there were no stipulations on the appearances because the project was expected to break ground quickly.

"Maybe we didn't do our job properly," he said.

Yost moved to allow the farmers market for one year, with the condition that the developer place sod or install a screened fence to hide the lot. The board supported his motion.

Eugene Paolino, an attorney for the developer, didn't think the aesthetic improvements would be a problem. "The developer wants that site to look as good as it can look," he said.

There is no timetable for construction to begin on the $500 million project.

View Larger Map Jersey City shooting victim hit with 6 bullets says man dressed in black ran up behind him and just started shooting Wednesday, June 30, 2010 By MICHAELANGELO CONTE JOURNAL STAFF WRITER A Jersey City man remained in intensive care yesterday after being shot six times Monday night on Martin Luther King Drive, police said yesterday, noting images of the gunman were captured by closed circuit television cameras. "The guy just ran up behind me and started shooting," the 31-year-old Grant Avenue victim told officers arriving after the 7:11 p.m. incident near Stevens Avenue. He described the gunman as being dressed "all in black," reports said. Police found the victim down on the sidewalk and bleeding from his torso and surrounded by "a large disorderly group," reports said. He had been shot in the left shoulder, right shoulder blade, twice in the lower abdomen and twice in the left buttock, reports said. He was rushed to an area hospital and into emergency surgery for the life-threatening wounds, reports said. Officials said he remained in intensive care yesterday. The video shows a tall, thin man carrying a silver handgun and wearing a black-hooded sweatshirt, black pants and black sneakers, reports said. The man is seen running west on Stevens before turning north onto King Drive, reports said. Police did not release the video footage yesterday. We got to the basketball court and the league was in full swing. Jersey City mayor wants two fire promotions rescinded, citing financial 'crisis,' but fire director is adamant they're needed

Wednesday, June 30, 2010
By MELISSA HAYES
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy doused two internal promotions at the city's Fire Department yesterday, citing tough financial times.

Healy said he learned this week that two battalion chiefs were internally named acting deputy chiefs. While no formal promotions took place, the move amounts to over $40,000 a year in salary increases because the men are paid at the higher rate.

Healy said in the past the Fire Department has been allowed to fill vacancies internally by placing people in an acting capacity, but times have changed.

"It's not allowed now because of the fiscal crisis that we're facing and every other city is facing," Healy said. "We have the ability to ask them to rescind it, and that's what we did."

Battalion Chief Gregory Lallo and Battalion Chief Wayne McCarthy, president of the fire supervisor's union, were promoted last Monday.

Healy said he learned of the promotions this week and quickly notified the department of his wish to rescind them.

But Fire Director Armando Roman said the department has to do something to fill vacancies created by retirements.

"Contractually you need to pay the overtime or put somebody in the acting position," Roman said.

The city has five deputy chiefs, 22 battalion chiefs, 127 captains and 367 firefighters, but will lose 15 people - two deputy chiefs, one battalion chief and captains and firefighters - to retirements tomorrow.

"We've lost a lot of experience," Roman said.

Last year, the department had 12 deputy chiefs, which Roman said allowed him to put experienced leadership in other positions. Lallo, for example, is in charge of transitioning the department's communications system to the city's new emergency communications center.

However, with the retirements, Roman said he had to put Lallo back on the line to supervise firefighters.

The department is split into four groups with a deputy chief assigned to each one and a fifth deputy chief serving as the department-wide chief of operations.

"These are essential emergency response positions," Roman said, adding he plans to speak with the mayor.

But Healy said he is asking the department to restructure.

Roman said steps have been taken to restructure certain areas, but said he needs five deputy chiefs.

Healy promoted five captains to the rank of battalion chief in May after Roman argued his case. The department has lost about 100 members to retirements in the last year, including 20 percent of its ranking members, Roman said.

Jersey City man is slain and another wounded as assailant opens fire at Duncan and Ocean avenues

Wednesday, June 30, 2010
By MICHAELANGELO CONTE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A Jersey City man died Monday night after being shot multiple times two blocks from Lincoln Park and a second victim who was shot in the back during the attack remained hospitalized in stable condition yesterday, officials said.

Darren Edwards, 22, of the Holland Gardens public housing complex, was pronounced dead at the Jersey City Medical Center at 10:15 p.m. after being shot 15 minutes earlier at Duncan and Ocean avenues, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said yesterday.

The second victim, a 21-year-old Jersey City man, remained hospitalized yesterday but doctors said his wound is not life threatening, DeFazio said.

The prosecutor said the victims were sitting on milk crates near a bodega when a gunman approached.

"Apparently, the actor approached from the east, opened fire, and the victims ran and then collapsed to the sidewalk," DeFazio said, adding that about eight shots were fired and the man who was killed was hit four times.

Homicide detectives have interviewed a number of witnesses in what DeFazio described as a "very active" investigation.

Security video footage may have captured portions of the crime. The victims were not robbed and no motive has been established, DeFazio said.

The preliminary autopsy report released yesterday afternoon revealed that Edwards was shot in the buttocks, left calf, left shoulder and right elbow, said Hudson County First Assistant Prosecutor Guy Gregory.

The cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death is homicide, Gregory said.

DeFazio said Edwards' murder did not appear to be related to an earlier 7:20 p.m. shooting on Martin Luther King Drive near Stevens Avenue in which a man was shot six times and suffered life-threatening wounds.

Edwards was in prison from Dec. 14, 2007 to July 2, 2008 and from Feb. 6, 2009 to July 28, 2009 for drug possession with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school, corrections records said.

Anyone with information on this fatal shooting is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345.

Actually the original developer went bankrupt.
After spending some time in the hands of the lending bank, reserves of the building have been established.
The empty units have been recently acquired by a new owner and are currently being renovated.
