Tommy Two Scoops
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

I decided to walk past this place on Friday and to my luck they just opened. A quick conversation with the owner Tom Parisi and I quicky realized that this place is more than a place to grab frozen treats. They have bagels, paninis, wraps, fries, sandwiches, and gelato. They also have a large outdoor patio.

Politicians don't want to run on thisissue because there are so many gov't workers now.NJ was a small gov't state 20 years ago but now it is as bad as NY. Dems pander to the municipal and teachers unions and Republicans talk about cutting but it is only lip sevice and they never actually do it. NJ just might default on their bonds one day.

Be careful on Erie Street and 10th
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

They put up a stop sign and changed the light to flashing red all directions. I wasn't even paying attention, and didn't even see it until my husband pointed it out. The two cars in front of my went right through the stop sign and the guy behind me looked confused as to why I was stopping.

So anyone driving on 10th, don't assume the people on Erie see you or know to stop. I think everyone is just used to that intersection the way it was. Proceed with caution.

+1. I also think people fail to realize that when the retirement age (for social security) was set, the life expectancy was almost 20 years younger than it is today. So obviously defined benefit pensions are not sustainable unless they have changed over time with life expectancy (either put more money in or change the retirement age.)

In other words: It's easy to give a lifetime of retirement benefits when you expect the person to retire at 65 and to die at 67. It's not as easy now that many people are living to 85...

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. 438 summit ave is NOT where Medicaid is located! that is Donald Wiggins office and he will not be able to help Alfonso. Alfonso and volunteer MUST go to Medicaid office, fill out intake forms to get his wheelchair. I said to mention to intake supervisor that Donald Wiggines, Director of MACC said to take his po box as his address for Medicaid problems and IF you had a problem to drop his name/title/office. If Alfonso has lost his Medicaid card he must get another, and get his Medicaid id # to get a wheel chair.

John Del Monte is downtown, at 239 Washington St. and is the best podiatrist I've ever seen including Manhattan. Here's his #: (201) 451-4755 office BTW, if he's not in or with a patient you may get his answering service but he will call back.

New NJ Pension Study
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Abstract: "We're screwed"

In this study, we consider the case of New Jersey, which operates five defined benefit pension plans for
state employees.3 The New Jersey Senate unanimously passed legislation in February 2010 that would
put a question on the November ballot to constitutionally require the state to begin to make its full
annual payment to the state?s pension system....

The state reports that its
pension systems are underfunded by $44.7 billion...

...when plan liabilities are calculated in a manner consistent with private sector accounting New Jersey?s
unfunded benefit obligation rises to $173.9 billion.

http://mercatus.org/sites/default/fil ... 1031-%20NJ%20Pensions.pdf

p.s. Jersey City is not making its pension payments either.

St. Mary's High School
Home away from home
Home away from home

I am writing this as someone who grew up in Jersey City and had the fortune of attending an all-girl's academy. The education, along with its emphasis on morality and values, was invaluable. That was over 20 years ago.

Those days are over.

I am highly recommending that parents look into St. Mary's High School. I don't know what it was like 20 years ago because it was never on my radar. I can say that the way it is run today will thoroughly shock you. It is a close-knit community of good-natured, well-behaved kids, some of whom pay for their own tuition by working after-school jobs. It is headed and staffed by a dedicated and kind administration with zero tolerance for bullying. The summer reading requirements are on the same level as the more expensive schools in the city, and the teachers are far more dedicated than what I've observed at a long-standing all-girls academy that I won't name.

It is a small friendly place. I think that what it lacks is a competitive academic reputation, which could easily be turned around simply by attendance of students with a stronger academic background. This place is really a gem. I hope people give it at least a look. Many of the other high schools with long histories in this city are surviving on reputation alone, but they're not living up to that reputation any longer. St. Peter's Prep is the exception...I believe it's as good as it always was.

Good luck to all.

Yes, they'll close half the car capacity of the Holland tunnel so a few bikes can use it rather than pay the same amount to use a ferry. That's presuming they'll charge you at least as much as a car, not that there'd be anything like the number of cars that would use that lane.

I hate fuzzy thinking.

Just can't stay away

Its actually a quick walk to JSQ even on the other side of the tracks (western portion of Van Reipen), I think there's a shortcut that goes through behind the Loews from one of the parallel streets, and even if you decide to walk down Tonelle to Kennedy to get to JSQ its less than 5 blocks anyway, very close. Its not a bad little neighborhood there, I looked at places there before settling on mine in a different part of JSQ, and when I've driven through the area at night it doesn't seem sketchy.

There are two parts to Van Reipen separated by the train cut. The East end behind the PATH complex is safe and EXTREMELY convenient for New York commuting.
I thought about that immediate area before settling on Newport because I feel PATH proximity is the primary reason for Jersey City living.

The Western side of Van Reipen, a block or two long is rather remotely located. Seems less safe, but I have rarely walked there so I am not sure, and it is a tortuous route to the PATH because of the need to get across those tracks.

Which side are you considering?

Our 10 Best Vegetarian (and Mainly Vegan) Dishes in NYC

Village Voice

The kanchipuram idly at Sapthagiri is served with tamarind sauce and homemade coconut chutney.

In case you haven't noticed, vegetable matter is the new meat - easy to cook and digest, jam-packed with vitamins and minerals, environmentally friendly, and, most important, good tasting. We've ransacked the menus of eateries in all five boroughs and even in near New Jersey to come up with our list of vegetarian faves. A large percentage are also vegan, and have been so marked. Eat and enjoy - and tell us the things we've missed.

Waiting for their eggplant parm at Torrisi.

10. Eggplant Parmesan at Torrisi Italian Specialties - Served with a generous cup of extra tomato sauce, the eggplant parmesan at Torrisi is a multi-layered wonder, bravely wearing a fresh basel leaf on its breast, made with great mozzarella, and, miraculously, not cooked into total oblivion. Call for availability, and expect to wait a while for it. 250 Mulberry Street, 212-965-0955

9. Broccoli Rabe Hero at Casa Calamari [vegan] - Slicked with plenty of olive oil, the bright green vegetable, crunchy and yielding all at the same time, comes dotted with whole cloves of caramelized garlic. Deposited on a well-crusted hero roll, it makes one of the tastiest and most filling sandwiches in the world. 8602 Third Avenue, Brooklyn, 718-921-1900

8. Kanchipuram Idly at Sapthagiri [vegan] - Idly is normally one of our favorite dishes, spongy rice-and-lentil pillows that come with at least a couple of earthy and pungent sauces. This version at the strictly vegetarian Sapthagiri (weekends only) incorporates cashews, fresh turmeric, shredded ginger, and cilantro - a flavor combination that launches the saucer-shaped treats into orbit. 804 Newark Avenue, Jersey City, NJ, 201-533-8400

7. Pickled Mushrooms at Kabeer [vegan] - An assortment of woodsy specimens, pickled to piquancy, then heaped with shaved onions and fresh dill: It's a simple dish, but one that might convince you mushrooms are much better than meat. And the list of brews on tap at this indoor Russian beer garden -- steps away from a summer stroll on the boardwalk -- will be an added incentive. 1003 Brighton Beach Avenue, Brooklyn, 718-934-9005

6. Toasted Cheese Sandwich at Bark Hot Dogs - Yes, it's totally counter-intuitive that one of the best vegetarian dishes in the city would be at an unreconstructed palace of pure meat - but there you have it. The bread comes from a firm white Pullman loaf, the cheese is sharp cheddar, and the grill is smeared with real butter. Simple, yet perfect. 474 Bergen Street, Brooklyn, 718-789-1939

The toasted cheese at Bark looks like the normal diner sandwich, only it's a million times better.

Wear a bib for god's sake to eat the sabich sandwich at Taim.

5. Mock Duck Spicy Bamboo at Am-Thai Chili Basil Kitchen [vegan] - The mock duck is amazing at this tiny restaurant, a stone's throw from Green-Wood Cemetery. The texture is fibrous, dense, and dark, just like real duck, and stir-fried with green beans and bamboo shoots in a mellow coconut-milk sauce -- You just can't beat it. 359 McDonald Avenue, Brooklyn, 718-871-9115

4. "Corn" at Dirt Candy [vegan on request] - The entr?e called simply "corn" is a collage of stone ground grits, corn cream, pickled shiitakes, huitlacoche, and the cryptic, quasi-science chef "tempura poached egg." That egg is molten underneath, the grits are gloriously fatty, the huitlacoche provides earthy funk, and the mushrooms rescue the whole thing from putting you in a coma. 430 East 9th Street, 212-228-7732

3. Sabich Sandwich at Taim - Whether you give up and eat this pita-borne sandwich with a fork, or try the more difficult and messy task of hoisting it in your hands, the combination of egg and eggplant is beyond brilliant, especially when amplified with hummus, Israeli salad, parsley, and amba - an engagingly tart sauce of mango and fenugreek. 222 Waverly Place, 212-691-6101

2. Amazonian Mushrooms at Katmandu Spice [vegan] - This Brazilian recipe swamps a choice collection of 'shrooms in herbs and coconut milk, then adds a dab of dende - the fluorescent-orange palm oil beloved of Cariocans. Served with rice, toasted farofa (manioc meal), fried plantains, and a spicy vinegar sauce. 60-15A Woodside Avenue, Queens, 718-779-7475

1. Butter Masala Dosa at Dosa Hutt - The secret of this tiny place is volume. A small army of cooks concocts dosas by the dozens, and they're experts. The batter is mixed and fermented in-house, the fillings - curried potatoes studded with nuts and spices - cooked up daily, and the dosas griddle-cooked to crunchiness. The butter masala dosa is the menu's apex, soaked with extra ghee at the last minute. 4563 Bowne Street, Queens, 718-961-5897

Former JC Nerdcore star MC Chris returns -- formerly pop-punk band Dirt Bike Annie (The Lee Majors)

MC Chris proves nerds can rap, too

Published: Saturday, July 03, 2010, 12:03 AM
Jim Testa/For The Star-Ledger

performed for a packed crowd of adoring fans Wednesday at Maxwell?€™s in Hoboken.

Short, squat, unshaven and unkempt, MC Chris looks like a fireplug with feet. You easily could mistake him for the pizza guy before you?d guess that he?s a world-famous rapper. But to his very loyal (and just as dorky) fans, the man stands taller than Eminem, Han Solo and Spider-Man put together.

MC Chris represents the gold standard for nerdcore, a genre that flips the stereotypical gangster image of hip-hop on its head and plays it for laughs.

Born Christopher Brendan Ward IV, MC Chris began rapping at house parties behind the then-Jersey City-based pop-punk band Dirt Bike Annie (a k a the Lee Majors) in 2001. So his show Wednesday at Maxwell?s in Hoboken ? the last gig of a two-month tour ? represented a homecoming of sorts. And the capacity crowd of diehard fans ? overwhelmingly white, under 30 and addicted to video games and comic books ? couldn?t have been happier to have him back in New Jersey, greeting him with nonstop displays of arm-waving, finger-pointing, shouted-out affection.

MC Chris? appeal ? as a rapper and a comic ? reaches across several demographics. From his start in the local pop-punk scene, he acquired a completely new audience with his voice-over and songwriting work for the Cartoon Network?s ?Adult Swim.? He self-releases his own music (to date: five album, three EPs and a compilation of early demos with the Lee Majors), books his own tours and acts as his own band, performing to pre-recorded backing tracks on a laptop.
And oh . . . he?s very funny.

For starters, his nasal, high-pitched voice makes him sound like a 5-year old who has been sucking helium. His lyrics celebrate the joys of pop culture, substance abuse and various other forms of misbehavior, with foul-mouthed bravado. But the man really can rap; his rhymes flow fast and furious, pushing the BPMs with impeccable timing and flawless delivery.

At Maxwell?s, he relied heavily on tracks from his latest album, ?MC Chris Goes To Hell,? released in April, at about the same time he wowed thousands at the Bamboozle festival in the Meadowlands parking lot. Clearly, the record has been out long enough for his fans to have memorized their favorite parts; on the sing-alongs (and that?s pretty much every song), the crowd kept pace with the MC on ?Drink?n Blunts? (an ode to overindulgence), ?006? (in which the MC brags about all his cool spy gadgets), ?Smackababy? (a call for corporal punishment for toddlers) and the very poppy ?Emo Party,? in which he embraces his inner Miley Cyrus.

Reaching back to earlier albums, Chris had the crowd sashaying back and forth to the dance-oriented ?Nrrrd Grrrl,? rocking out to ?Hoodie Ninja? and (when his voice started giving out) ending the night with the crowd doing most of the singing on ?The Tussin,? a cautionary tale about chugging Robitussin to get high.

MC Lars and fellow rapper YT Cracker (sound it out and the joke will make sense) opened with a similar set of comedic rap, heavily influenced by pop-culture references and old video games. A nerd-rap show is the only place where you can see a hip-hop concert and feel the imminent danger of a Star Trek Convention breaking out at any moment.

Key albums: ?MC Chris Goes To Hell? (2010), ?The New York University 8-Track Discography 10th Anniversary Edition? (2007), ?Life?s a Bitch and I?m Her Pimp? (2001)

Founder says CREATE Charter School closing after 10 years is both bitter and sweet

Saturday, July 03, 2010
By MELISSA HAYES
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

The hallways are empty and the lights are off at CREATE Charter School, which closed its doors for the last time Wednesday.

The Jersey City school district has already changed the locks in anticipation of opening a new school in the Lembeck Avenue building in September after the state declined to renew CREATE's charter.

The charter school's last class of 64 seniors graduated June 18. The students' last day was June 23 and the last staff members left Wednesday.

Steve Lipski, a former city councilman and the school's founder, said after 10 years of educating students the closing is bittersweet.

"The bitterness is we were making progress with the kids. For those kids there's really no other choice but to go back to where they didn't want to be in the beginning," he said.

"On the other hand, where it's sweet, we tried to come in and raise the bar and raise standards. The board is now looking to come in and continue that if not do it better."

CREATE's roughly 300 middle and high school students will return to the Jersey City district.

State Commissioner of Education Bret Schundler declined to renew the school's charter, citing poor student performance, failure to complete state-mandated reports, high staff turnover and failure to provide a structured learning environment, among other things.

Lipski fought the allegations, saying the state allowed the school to open a middle school only two years ago. He said state Department of Education officials never took issue with test scores or other things prior to this year.

While Lipski doesn't blame Schundler - the former Jersey City mayor became commissioner in the middle of the state's review of the charter - he does take issue with the decision.

"This decision was arbitrary and capricious and shouldn't have happened, but it did and we don't have the juice to change it," he said.

Jersey City Superintendent Charles Epps plans to open Infinity Institute at the site, a school-of-choice for the district's brightest middle and high school students. The admissions test was administered Monday.

Hoboken police say Jersey City couple may not have been having sex in public but that both had outstanding warrants and man urinated on fingerprint machine at police headquarters

Saturday, July 03, 2010
By ANNA YUKHANANOV
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

HOBOKEN - A Jersey City man originally suspected of having sex in public urinated on a fingerprint machine at the Hoboken police station this week, officials said.

Police found the man, and a Jersey City woman, on a stoop at Jackson and Fifth streets, Hoboken, after receiving a report of adults having sex in public, according to reports.

When police arrived at the address at about 7 p.m. Tuesday, they found Jeffrey Mahon, 43, and Shiela Slaten, 59, who said they had just been sitting on the steps and were not doing anything sexual, according to reports.

No one in the area wished to file any complaints, police said.

However, when police checked the suspects' names, they found that both had outstanding warrants.

Mahon had three warrants from Hoboken and Slaten had a warrant from Jersey City, according to reports.

Police arrested both and took them to the police station for processing.

At the station, Mahon stood up from the chair where he was handcuffed and urinated on the fingerprint machine, officials said.

He was subsequently charged with criminal mischief, reports said.

Mahon was taken to Hoboken University Medical Center to be evaluated and cleared for incarceration, and the next day was taken to the Hudson County jail, officials said.

Newark man charged with dousing Jersey City boy, father with gasoline in jealous rage

July 02, 2010, 9:59 PM
Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

Tracy Ferguson of Newark is accused of throwing gasoline on a 9-year-old boy and his father in Jersey City today and then trying to set the dad on fire, police said.

A Newark man has been charged with attempted murder after throwing gasoline on a 9-year-old boy and his father and trying to set the dad on fire on a Jersey City street this morning, officials said.

Tracy Ferguson, 39, was looking to exact revenge on the father -- his old girlfriend's new boyfriend -- officials said.

Ferguson was arrested at Franklin Street and Palisade Avenue by police officers who chased him down after he attacked the father and son on Hancock Avenue as the dad was walking to boy to School 8 at 8:30 a.m., Police Chief Tom Comey said at a news conference this afternoon.

Ferguson was charged with two counts of attempted murder, aggravated arson, weapons offenses related to a stun gun he was carrying and numerous other offenses, Comey said.

Police said Ferguson has prior arrests in Newark and East Orange.

This afternoon the boy remains at the Jersey City Medical Center where he is being treated for chemical burns to his scalp from the gasoline but he is expected to be OK and will likely be released later today, officials said.

The father, who is thought to be the target of the attack, is at the hospital with the boy.

Comey said police in the Heights have responded to previous calls of domestic violence in which Ferguson has allegedly tried to exact jealous revenge on his ex-girlfriend.

Pamela Suchy/The Jersey Journal
Jersey City Police Capt. Phil Zacche speaks at this afternoon's news conference about an attack on a man and his 9-year-old son who were doused with gasoline. Police Chief Tom Comey is third from left.
This morning Ferguson hid between two parked cars and when the victim and boy walked past he threw a large soft drink cup full of gasoline on them, Comey said, adding that he then took out a flare and tried to ignite it but could not.

"If he got it ignited, we would have had a very different situation," Comey said.

It was then that Officer Elaine Disbrow passed by and the frantic victim showed her his gasoline-soaked shirt and said, "He's trying to kill me. He's throwing gasoline."

Ferguson took off and the victim ran after him, police.

Disbrow broadcast a description of Ferguson and his direction of flight. Officers Victor Alsina and Lamor Nelson joined the chase and when they caught up with the victim and Ferguson at Palisade and Franklin, the victim shouted, "That's the man that tried to set me on fire."

Alsina ordered Ferguson to halt and realized he was trying to hide something.

"I told him, 'Stop, let me see your hands,'" Alsina said at the news conference. "He complied and that's when the stun gun fell out of his hands."

Ferguson was arrested without incident and is being processed in the North District police station.

"He shows no remorse," Comey said. "He's as cold and calm as can be."

The chief praised the work of the officers saying, "It was their quick thinking that averted a tragedy."

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said the charge of attempted murder carries a possible sentence of up to 20 years in prison for each victim upon conviction. The prosecutor said aggravated arson carries a sentence of up to 10 years.
