We deeply appreciate the service and sacrifice police officers make, but the actions of FOP member(s) who knowingly block any fire hydrant are unacceptable.
Photograph the cars that have FOP plates, note the times and dates they are blocking the hydrant and then send the pictures and a letter to the Executive Board of Jersey City FOP Lodge #4 Look up the names and emails of FOP Lodge #4's Executive Board along the left hand side. Here's their mailing address: Jersey City Lodge #4 PO Box 3872 Jersey City, NJ 07303 201 424-8625 In addition, send a copy of the letter and pictures to: Edward R. Trump Plaza Residences Jersey City Featured on Fifth Season of "HGTV Design Star" By Mel Fabrikant Friday, October 15, 2010, 11:24 AM EDT Designers Challenged to Design Residences at Luxury Tower Trump Plaza Residences in Jersey City, one of New Jersey's most luxurious residential condominium towers, was featured in an episode during the fifth season of HGTV's top-rated design competition show, "HGTV Design Star." The episode featured the show's designer finalists, who were divided into two teams and brought on location to Trump Plaza Residences Jersey City. Each team was challenged to design a two-bedroom residence in the 443-unit Gold Coast property, which at 55 stories is the tallest residential tower in the state. The catch: contestants had to incorporate a package of kitschy New York City souvenirs into the design while upholding the traditional standard of luxury associated with the Trump name. "We were thrilled to welcome HGTV and 'Design Star' to our property," said Jodi Stasse, head of marketing and sales at Stasse & Co., Trump Plaza Residences Jersey City's exclusive sales agent. "It was a great opportunity to bring Trump Plaza Jersey City to the national stage and to showcase our fantastic location, fabulous amenities and stunning views." Donald Trump Jr. made a cameo appearance as a guest judge, assisting the show's judges, celebrity designers Candice Olson of "Divine Design," Genevieve Gorder of "Dear Genevieve" and Vern Yip of "HGTV Urban Oasis" with their final decisions on the model residences. Having played an integral role in Trump-branded real estate properties nationally and internationally, Trump was an easy choice for "HGTV Design Star" producers. Not only is he an expert in Trump-style luxury and amenities, he also is no stranger to reality television, having appeared as one of the judges on his father's shows, "The Apprentice" and "The Celebrity Apprentice." The "HGTV Design Star" contestants competed against each other in various design challenges for the ultimate prize -- their own show on HGTV. Each week, the show's judges critiqued each challenge and judged the contestants on their ability to meet each task with creativity and originality. The fifth season of HGTV's top-rated reality competition premiered on June 13 and the finale aired on Aug. 22. Located two blocks from the waterfront at 88 Morgan St., the residences at Trump Plaza have been designed to provide an abundance of natural light and to take advantage of the breathtaking views of the Hudson River, Jersey City, the Statue of Liberty and the famous New York City skyline. A seventh-floor terrace complete with pool and cabanas, a glass-enclosed fitness center and an exclusive spa with a Roman-style aqua grotto are among a long list of indoor and outdoor sanctuaries that make Trump Plaza an ideal address for the New York metropolitan area's elite. The residences at Trump Plaza include one- and two-bedroom homes ranging in size up to 1,450 square feet. Prices for one-bedrooms start in the mid-$400,000s, while those for the two-bedrooms start in the mid-$600,000s. Three-bedroom homes and penthouses are available but are in limited supply, with pricing available upon request. The property has a 20-year tax abatement. FHA financing is also available, offering reduced interest rates and low down payments. HGTV "Design Star's" focus on Trump-branded luxury and glamour carries out a theme initiated several months ago by celebrity designer Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz, who redesigned the building's public spaces. For his inspiration, Noriega-Ortiz drew on the Trump family's style. The interiors of the building reflect the idea that stepping into Trump Plaza Residences Jersey City is meant to feel like stepping into a Trump family estate. Upon entering the property through the lobby, guests feel as if they are entering the foyer of a grand mansion. In addition to panoramic views of New York City, the property features a convenient location near the Exchange Place and Grove Street PATH stations, the waterfront ferry and the Bergen-Hudson Light Rail. For more information on Trump Plaza Residences Jersey City, visit the on-site sales suite, which is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 88 Morgan St. in Jersey City. Morning and evening hours are available by appointment. Jersey 'captain' in Bonanno crime family sentenced to 18 months in prison for loansharking
Published: Friday, October 15, 2010 Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal A federal judge sentenced Joseph Sammartino Sr. of North Arlington, formerly of Jersey City, today to 18 months in prison for loansharking. A Bonanno crime family "captain" who was born and raised in Jersey City's Marion section was sentenced this morning to 18 months in federal prison after having pleaded guilty to a loansharking offense. Joseph Sammartino Sr., 56, aka "Sammy''' and "Sammo,'' who now lives in North Arlington, is already more than halfway through his prison term since he has been held without bail since his arrest in October 2009. U.S. District Court Judge Nicholas Garaufis, sitting in Brooklyn, was stern with Sammartino, telling him to remain clean after his release. "I warn the defendant that I take most seriously the provision in the special condition that he is not to communicate or associate with anyone in organized crime and if he does, he will go back to jail," Garaufis said. Garaufis also fined Sammartino $50,000 and noted that although he has not worked in seven years and his wife makes $60,000, they have a net worth of $1 million. Assistant U.S. Attorney Gina Parlovecchio also noted that authorities found $10,000 in cash in their home. Federal officials say Sammartino is a member of the Bonanno family's ruling panel and he ran New Jersey for the organization. A source has told The Jersey Journal that Sammartino operated out of Bayonne. After his 2009 arrest, which coincided with the unsealing of an indictment against him and others, Sammartino was kept in jail because a judge found him to be a danger to the community and ordered him held without bail. On June 21, Sammartino pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit extortion, admitting he conspired with associates to collect a high-interest loan from a man identified as "Sal from Staten Island." Officials said he had a minor role in the crime, and Garaufis noted Sammartino had contact with the victim only through others. White-haired and wearing faded black prison garb, Sammartino expressed remorse. "I apologize to the court and my family and my friends," he told the court. More than a score of Sammartino's supports were in attendance. Sammartino did time in New York for a 1992 attempted assault. His lawyer, Michael Rosen, said Sammartino stopped working in 2003 after being diagnosed with cancer and has undergone 38 rounds of radiation therapy and two surgeries. The lawyer said his client now appears to be cancer-free. In asking the judge for lenience, Rosen noted Sammartino's medical condition, said he has a good work ethic, only played a minor role in the crime, and has "strong, strong, family support." Several of the others charged in the indictment unsealed last October have also pleaded guilty. Among the crimes alleged were racketeering, assault in aid of racketeering, threatening to commit a crime of violence in aid of racketeering, bank fraud, illegal gambling, extortion and perjury.

Jersey City to get its own slice of Hoboken's "Cake Boss"
Friday, October 15, 2010, 4:34 PM Katie Colaneri/The Jersey Journal Reena Rose Sibayan/The Jersey Journal Buddy Valastro of the reality TV show, "Cake Boss, " in Hoboken, arrives in Bayonne to deliver the cake to Buon Appetito Restaurant in Bayonne where reality series "Jersey Shore" star Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi is holding a belated Mother's Day celebration for her mother, Helen. Jersey City will soon be getting its own slice of Hoboken's "Cake Boss." Sometime next year, Buddy Valastro will be expanding his century-old family baking business to the Lackawanna Center, an 8-story industrial building outside the Holland Tunnel on Grove Street in Jersey City. The "Boss" will take over 30,000 square feet on the ground floor of the Center in order to build a state-of-the-art baking facility and distribution center. A larger headquarters for the bakery's administrative offices is also in the works. The storefront at Carlo's City Hall Bakery on Washington Street in Hoboken will remain to serve customers and of course, for tapings of the TLC reality series now in its third season. "It's exciting...," said Jonathan Ratner, Vice President of Emmes Asset Management, LLC which co-owns the Lackawanna Center. "He now has international demand and he's basing his business expansion out of our property." It is not yet clear when the Valastro's will be moving in, but construction has already begun on their new digs. A rendering of the Shops at Lackawanna, a new retail project that could bring several new businesses to the Lackawanna Center in Jersey City. "Cake Boss" is one of several new tenants who could be moving into the Lackawanna Center in the coming years. Emmes Asset Management is in the planning stages of a new project called "the Shops at Lackawanna" which aims to revamp the ground floor of the building with 200,000 square feet of new retail businesses. The plan will have to go through the Jersey City Planning Commission before construction can begin, which could take some time, according to Ratner. The building owners have also begun a four-phase capital improvement project. Phase one has already started with infrastructure and elevator improvements. Next up, construction will begin on two new parking lots with room for 300 spaces each.

The JCPA vehicle is the most glaring, but frequently cars with FOP plates also park in front of the fire hydrant. I have witnessed the street sweeper go around it on street sweeping days and the car is not ever ticketed. Every time I see something like this, I take a picture.

Take a picture of the vehicle w/licence plate and send it to the parking authority, the police, and Steve Fulops office. Explain in the email that this vehicle is habitually being parked illegally (give the location) and it needs to stop. I would also post the picture here on JC List. Sometimes embarassing the guilty party along with getting multiple parties to hold them accountable can do the trick. Follow up with multiple emails..you must be persistant, good luck!

A JC Parking Authority vehicle regularly parks illegally on our street - either in front of a fire hydrant or on top of the crosswalk. But of course they can do it since they are the Parking Authority and they are clearly playing by a different set of rules.

It's a combination of problems at our corners: poor signage, lack of well-maintained (and painted) crosswalks and red-lined curbs, lack of enforcement and people parking at the corners.
Here's a site we created to help drivers understand the implications of their actions: Jersey City Parking Hall of Shame Will someone be killed before the city takes enforcement action or paints the crosswalks?

In my opinion, the lack of ENFORCEMENT is the biggest problem in Jersey City. The lack of Enforcement from the JCPD, JCPA and the JCIA create huge reprocussions that negatively effect the quality of life of all residents. People park too close to the corner or in crosswalks because they know that they will get away with it (people in wheelchairs and women with baby carriages can't cross but they don't care). Fights, public drinking and drugs occur every weekend on Monmouth St because the same hoodlums hang there knowing that if cops do come they won't be arrested. People constantly dump their household garbage in public cans resulting in countless public cans being in a constant state of overflow because no one is enforcing the illegal dumping ordinance. There are plenty of easy opportunities for theses agencies to enforce the law and arrest/ fine the culprits. The result would be a better quality of life for residents and funds would be raised to help the city with the budget crisis.

The reason for the sewer increase: Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission. Jersey City never expanded its sewerage treatment facilities to treat all the waste it generates. We also have combined storm water / sewer which puts a lot of stress on the system during heavy rains.
Jersey City sends a portion of its sewage across the river to a PVSC via a pipeline. They charge us up the wazoo for the privilege. http://www.northjersey.com/news/01271 ... ries_and_vows_change.html Governor Christie ripped into the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioners on Wednesday, attacking the executive director?s salary ? $138,000 more than his own ? and promising changes in the way the agency is run. ?I think the taxpayers of New Jersey are going to be appalled to learn that somebody who runs a commission that gets its money predominantly from disadvantaged ratepayers has an executive director who?s making $313,000 a year,? the governor said during a Wednesday press conference. ?It?s completely outrageous. We will figure out a way to try to fix it.? The PVSC, which serves 1.3 million people in a large swath of North Jersey, including the state?s three largest urban areas, last week adopted a $164 million budget. In 2008, the agency?s $46 million payroll included Executive Director Bryan Christiansen?s $290,730 salary. He is the highest-paid employee in the state?s pension system. http://www.centralavesid.org/pdf/2010_01_Newsletter.pdf The Jersey Journal?s interview with Becht went on to indicate that the driving force behind the rate hike is fixed costs including how much the MUA pays the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (PVSC) to process and treat waste water. Passaic Valley has increased its rates 66 percent since 2000 from $11.58 million to $19.17 million. That cost amounts to 44 percent of the MUA?s budget. In addition, 26 percent of the budget goes to pay off debt, 24 percent pays to provide services and 6 percent is administrative costs. It should be noted that Passaic Valley rates Quote:

Opening Day of Baseball with the Jersey Giants, Mayor Hague closed down all public schools to a half day, afternoon half was closed, so that any child was allowed to go to the game free as long as he had a written note from parents. The PS busses would be parked at the school and load all that was going to the game, when you got on you would get a bleecher ticket for the game and a ice cream pop on a stick, where you got dropped off you were picked up and taken back to the school, and I never heard of losing any kid.

I know this is an old thread, and that the majority of the posts here are focused on downtown JC, however, I can tell you that from someone who lives in the Heights, Western Slope area, the parking situation is HORRIBLE up here also. With the influx of one family homes being sold and then torn down and those monster two families going up in its place, along with the garages that go along with it, that we have lost approximately 16 parking spots on my block alone in the last two years. That, coupled with people making their alley ways into makeshift driveways ups that total even more.
We are a one car family, garage and driveway free, and struggle to find a place to park day after day. It has come to the point that I don't dare venture out after dark for fear that I will never find a spot. I'm not looking to park right in front of my home but the same block would be nice - there are times when I've parked all the way up on Kennedy Blvd because nothing else was available (I'm down on Liberty Ave - so it's a far walk when it's late at night). I cringe every Tuesday when I have to pick my son up at Boy Scouts at 8pm - The best is when I look around at all my "neighbors" - the ones with the driveways, garages and alley way spaces, and their cars aren't even parked there - they are out on the street. I parked in the driveway across from my house one night just to prove my point....and it still didn't make a difference. It just made the owner of that house really pissed So, if I find a spot right on the corner, and I can fit there and I'm not really blocking anything, I dump my car there. Sorry. Years ago you would have gotten a ticket, but not so much lately. Anyway, I just needed to vent.....parking in JC SUCKS
