Re: What is that STENCH???

Home away from home

Ooof... I did see a bunch parked there when I got out of the train, and wondered if that might be it. Horrible... the smell has carried at least half a mile from where it's parked, if that's it!

What is that STENCH???

Got off the PATH at Journal Square, and from there until at least my home (which is half a mile away, towards the Heights), the entire outside reeks of some sort of rancid, fishy-smell (like what a fish market smells like at the end of the day, before they spray down the floors).

Aside from all the "isn't that what it smells like every day" jokes, for real, what's up? Anyone know?

This morning's service problems explained: This morning we had a train stall en-route to 33rd Street between Grove Street and Newport Station. Had to couple another train to move the disabled train. Incident occurred approximately 7:45am-8:15am. Passengers for 33rd Street at JSQ, GRV and Newport were sent to WTC. 33rd Street service restored from JSQ with extensive delays for the remainder of the peak.

I'll tell you, that got kinda scary this morning - the platform got so crowded that people, including me, ended up standing like 2-3 inches, literally, from the edge. All it would have taken is a little bump from some idiot and it could have been a real tragedy, as someone (or multiples) fell onto the tracks.

By the way, did anyone notice their attempt at the PATH version of EZPass lanes, yesterday on the way home in WTC? It was the only time I've seen them - clearly, not a smart idea.

Granted, he's probably basing this on what he saw in his neighborhood and isn't speaking for all of Chicago. But wouldn't that be nice?

They do it - and it's respected - in Philly, too.

It didn't take much to find their JC address, listed on their website under the "Contact" section at the bottom:

155 Van Wagenen Ave, 4th Floor, Jersey City, NJ 07306

It's apparently appointment-only, though.

Yeah, but they're probably also not reading JCList.com, either.

I don't think the 21st amendment is applicable here, tqwert - I think the Supreme Court ruling in Granholm v. Heald seems to have established precedence. In that instance, it was obviously more about inter-state commerce (calling into question the Dormant Commerce Clause and its role within the context of the 21st ammendment), but as this was on a more personal and obvious innocuous level, clearly it's even less a violation.

This is more about the Port Authority and their policy - they do allow transportation of sealed alcohol, typically.

Wonderful. One of the safer places in town - during a very busy time - and this still goes down...

Re: Think again before running that red light
Home away from home
Home away from home

I have to jump in here on this one - if they want to install a red-light camera that might actually catch people and make a difference, it should be on 14th outside of the Holland Tunnel. ESPECIALLY at the right side of the intersection, as people make a right onto Marin Blvd. As part of my daily commute, I'm one of the fortunate that are sitting there alongside the exit, by the gas station, waiting for every other light to turn green so that WE can go, and people flying out of the tunnel come pretty close to hitting me at least once or twice a week.

The Tonnelle Circle is about the most inane place that I can think of, for a camera - the intersection itself is VERY confusing. I live right next to the circle, just off Tonnele, and I find that I myself am going through the light 3-4 times a week, because I'm stuck in the middle of the intersection behind someone that slows/stops because they can't figure out where they are, or where to go. RIDICULOUS. The state acknowledges how horrible the whole thing is - why else would there be all the construction to fix it? I live here, I drive through the thing 2-4 times a day, and yet I'm the one that would get the ticket because of some jackass in front of me.

Oh, and you want to fix the mess that is JFK, pretty much at any given time of the day but exponentially worse in the mornings? Get rid of the dollar vans! Yeah I know how "vital" they are to local commerce, but wow, they're worse than NYC taxicabs, for how erratic, WIDE, and rude they are.

Having said all of this, I really am amazed at how many people go through red lights, all over town, on a regular basis. My 2 1/2 mile daily commute always leads to at least one or two moments of total bewilderment.
