The map shows areas of racial segregation in JC - and those areas by definition are ghetto.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghetto

Definition as provided by your link:

A ghetto is a part of a city in which members of a minority group live, especially because of social, legal, or economic pressure. (emphasis mine.)

How does that map show indications of social, legal or economic pressure? Also - while the definition above is technically correct, you and I both know there is a more modern connotation to "ghetto" that differentiates it from its more archaic use such as the Jewish ghettos of Hitler's Europe.

Zoom in on JC. "Ghettos" are common knowledge in JC - except perhaps on the waterfront.

For a mere fraction of the price these fun fantastic scooters will at the very minimum will half your travel time vs walking! From personal experience let me tell you that these extremely light weight/portable scooters are undoubtedly the best way to get around town. Get to and from the PATH station in no time and then easily fold up the scooter for the train ride to/from work. Great for kids over 8 too these stylish scooters have a solid low weight aluminum frame (10 lbs) telescoping handle bars, an easy folding mechanism, fast over sized 210 mm high speed wheels and an over sized foot break. If interested 'd be happy to give you a test ride so you can see for yourself how simple & fun they are to ride so feel free to contact me via post in the classified ad section below the forum posts for additional information!

Re: PATH-Weary Jersey City Wants to Build a Pedestrian Bridge to Manhattan

As an owner of one of those apartments, I say where do I sign up for the bridge? It would be something that begins to define the area as something other than "it's not much to write home about, but it's a five minute subway ride to lower Manhattan." You could put it down by the Goldman building (on this side) to minimize its effect on the area; also, a beautifully designed bridge becomes an attractive attribute to the landscape.

No reason why you can't do both - a bridge and subsidize ferry service. The Port Authority (not the only potential funding source - certainly not for the ferry, at least) has a budget of just under $8 billion per year; $3.5 billion of that is for capital projects. You could have built the bridge for a fraction of what the Oculus cost (and I happen to like the Oculus. Why? Same reason the bike pedestrian bridge would be so attractive - its an amenity. Something that makes a place. Look at the shitty way the riverfront was built, with little planning and no regard for amenities and ascetics. The Jersey City waterfront is so lacking in things that define great places. The bridge isn't just a device to ease rush hour commutes (although it certainly would help in that regard) but something that invites people in to look at JC anew. I'm sorry, but some murals and picnic tables on Newark Avenue don't really chin that bar.

Also - look at the rebuilding of the Tappan Zee bridge, the dumbest bridge in the country (built in the widest part of the Hudson so that it barely escapes the port authority's reach.) $3.9 billion for a new bridge because that was built in the 50s and wasn't properly maintained. There is money for stuff, there just isn't great oversight.

Do you and your wagon ever venture beyond the walls of the city, Brewster? This type of stuff is not unusual in more forward thinking parts of the world (Scandinavia, Holland, France, et al, eastern Asia). You've previously cited ship traffic as one obstacle - other than the cruise ships, you could design something with plenty of clearance for the traffic that uses the river, commercial and otherwise. (The cruise ships don't HAVE to come up the river. There are other options.) Not saying it would be cheap, but there would be more demand and benefits than I think you are appreciating.

That said, thanks to the thick overcrust of backwards that envelops the region, it's probably not likely until the second half of the century.

Those last nine words epitomize so much that is wrong with the conservative movement and, let's face it, Rich is a conservative. Time and again we see this course taken - in education, infrastructre, guns. Progress isn't often binary, it's usually a process. It's always easy to find fault with even the best ideas - the answer isn't to throw them away because of even minor defects, it is to double your efforts to figure out how to make them work better. That's what a leader does. All I hear from Rich is an endless torrent of bitching and criticism while offering very little in terms of workable policy designed to solve problems.

Brewster - you are so 15th century, flat earth. The world changes, my man. This stuff will happen - it may be decades away and probably not this design, but the only thing permanent is change. 150 years ago, no one would have imagined cars. 100 years ago, no one would have imagined commercial air travel for the masses. A year ago, few would have foreseen the possibility of the UK leaving the EU and perhaps breaking up altogther (the UK, that is. Who knows, perhaps the EU, too?). Fifty years from now? Cars may be antiquated, the U.S. could go the way of the UK (which I think is quite possible) - who knows?

It always happens slower here because change is harder to affect here and people are more resistant; creativity and innovation tends to happen elsewhere and creeps in, slowly permeating the calcified status quo, but it does happen. Repurposing and reorientation of infrastructure is no different. So growl about the kids on your lawn all you want, just understand that you sound old and out of touch when you do.

Fulop would be a hell of a mayor, if he was interested in the job. He's head and shoulders, hands down more capable than the all the Lavarros, Mukherjis (a lower wattage Indian Fulop on ambition steroids), Wattermans, Boggianos, et al rolled together. But how would a second Fulop term be any different than the first? He'd probably be even more desperately running for governor, which would just generate even more frenzied activity for the sake of press releases rather than substantive improvement/change and the meat and potatoes stuff (like traffic enforcement, road maintenance, policing, etc.) would move further and further out of focus.

If he runs, O'Dea is probably the best of the bunch.

Re: Residents Say Drivers Are Ignoring Stop Signs, Flying Through Jersey City Intersection
Home away from home
Home away from home

I spent a week in Southern CA earlier this month, in and around LA - also an area with a high concentration of immigrants. People came to full, multi-second stops almost universally. (I had a good chuckle when the reporter in the original clip referred to the rolling stop as a "California stop." Wrong.) I've found full, pronounced stops at stop signs to be the case up and down the west coast. You also see pedestrians obeying walk/don't walk signals and it is quite unusual to see people crossing in the middle of a block.

It is entirely an enforcement problem. There is no other plausible explanation - and while I agree that commuters make the problem worse, there is a pervasive disregard for traffic and pedestrian safety that permeates the region.

Get real. Who the hell is checking Waze and looking up street closures online when it occurs to them mid-afternoon Saturday that they need to run to Target or Home Depot to get a few things too large to handle by bike or walking? I'm a creature of the 21st century and use Waze when venturing out on the TPK and beyond, but it's a bit much to expect people to take those steps for such a small, run of the mill trip.

Besides - there really weren't any good answers. If you had to get out, all Waze and the website would have told you is that you are screwed. And none of which addresses the ambulance....

Why such a crank about it?

Caught in the act!

I was coming home off the pier 11 to Paulus Hook ferry last night at 7 PM and walked to the bike rack in front of building by the ferry terminal. My bike was stolen from the bike rack which I parked and locked it at.

Low and behold I turn around to start to walk home and see an individual with my bike, about 20 yards away. I am watching him walk on the waterfront path towards the back of the goldman building walking south with my bike. I called the east district police. Since I was half in the bag from a happy hour, this was pure entertainment.

They sent a car over to the area based on my description of the bike. Since the individual was walking south, I walked West in an effort to cut him off from the dead end that he would eventually hit. While I was walking I witnessed him and his partner trying to steal another bike, on the south side of 70 Greene St.

I kept my distance and called the police back and told them the exact location and that the theft was in progress. Since they were in the area, they were able to respond quickly and caught them in the act, hand in the cookie jar.

The criminals were 2 16 year old Latino juveniles, and were then booked at the Cator Ave youth bureau. The main guy was them about 5 ft tall and obese, hard to miss actually. I got my bike back. Despite the belief that cops don't care about petty stuff, they were pretty impressed in my drunken communication skills, and were happy I called them.

That's a great story - made my day! Congratulations.

Out of curiosity, what kind of lock were you using?

Simple, simple Yvonne. Fearlessly treading into deep and unfamiliar waters, not letting your ignorance slow you for a second.

Target's stock is down like virtually all retailers, because of an uncertain consumer spending environment in the second quarter. Look at Macy's over the past few weeks. Kohl's. Same story. Has nothing to do with potties or pee pees or homophobic wedding cake bakers:

(Also from Yahoo finance):

Target (TGT) stock fell nearly 10% in early trading Wednesday after the retailer reported sales that missed forecasts. Target also warned that its sales and earnings for the second quarter would be lower than what analysts were expecting.

Overall sales were down 5% in the quarter, but that was largely due to Target's sale of its in-store pharmacies to CVS (CVS).

Related: Macy's is in serious trouble

There was some good news. Target's earnings rose 16.5% from a year ago and topped Wall Street's estimates. Digital sales surged 23% as well.

But the weak guidance is the story.
Target CEO Brian Cornell said in a statement that it is "in an increasingly volatile consumer environment" for retailers and added that it is "a challenging short-term consumer landscape."
Cornell, who left Pepsi (PEP) to take over Target in 2014, is widely credited with righting the ship after a massive hack in late 2013 caused more than 40 million consumers to have their credit card information compromised.

But Target is now the latest prominent retailer to disappoint investors. Macy's (M), Kohl's (KSS), J.C. Penney (JCP) and Nordstrom (JWN) also reported underwhelming results recently.

Fewer than 10% of "the people" have spoken. The genie hasn't even gotten out of the bottle yet, if indeed there is even a genie in there. Same thing happens in Germany, Netherlands, Scandanavia....

Trump isn't going anywhere. Far too many of the people who need to get behind him to push him over the top, won't. Not necessarily. Although I don't know the exact boundaries that will be used to define the SID, they are unlikely to change the fact that Exchange Place is very different from JSQ. Much more corporate. A couple of large hotels (who would benefit significantly from increased activity and improved amenities) occupy a decent amount of the space, as do large office buildings and PATH. I can't imagine this would be done without their interest, especially given the gubernatorial candidate's insatiable need for future campaign contributions and the propensity of large corporations to provide same.
