Even with 4 major cell phone competitors (Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, and T-mobile) the prices are pretty much the same between all 4 companies. Sure you may be able to get a cheaper phone or a few more minutes, but you still can't get basic service from any of those providers for less than $40/month. Prices will always level off no matter how many companies are competing.

I don't agree with the quote that "every other telecommunications service has dropped in price". If anything prices have gone up. I used to pay $34.99/month for Verizon wireless, now it's $39.99 for the same plan.

Besides, Comcast already has competition from Directv and Dish Network. (I left Comcast 4 years ago for Directv) I know some people can't get satellite, but even when Fios becomes available, it won't be available to everyone. Some buildings won't be wired for Fios, and issues like that. Point is, the prices are still about the same, with Directv being a bit cheaper.

How about Montgomery Towers? Those are older buildings but still close to the Path and PO.

Bike Security
Home away from home
Home away from home

I am thinking of locking my bike to the fence in front of my house for the summer (in the front area where the garbage cans are stored). My apartment is a third floor walkup and it is very inconvenient to have to carry the bike up and down all the time. Just wondering if anyone else does this or has had any problems with a bike being stolen from outside their home. The seat is easily removable so I will bring that inside. The total value of the bike is only around $100 so if it did get stolen it's not the end of the world.

Re: I need some serious advice regarding my rental situation

The only thing you can do is move out if you're not happy. The guy owns the house and can do whatever he wants with it as long as nothing violates your lease. Usually there is nothing in the lease that guarantees an insulated apartment. I have been living in my place for 4 years and it gets very drafty in the winter, but it's just something I've learned to live with. I have no way of forcing my landlord to install better windows.

Also, it is not unusual to not have a lease renewal. I signed an original lease upon move in 4 years ago and have not renewed since. That's just the way some landlords do it.

I agree there is a problem at most restaurants. Maybe the bottle deposit could be imposed on businesses only.

I know many people who have gone to bartending school and from their experiences I have found that there are far more bartenders than there are bartending jobs, especially in this area. And in many chain restaurants they require that you be a server first, regardless of your bartending experience.

Since when is there a 5-cent deposit in NJ? I have lived in the state 12 years and have never paid it on any of the soda cans I've bought. I know NY has a deposit. When I lived in CT we had to pay a deposit and it is the most asinine thing in the world. There is nothing worse than having to save all your cans, bring them all back to the grocery store, and put them into a machine one by one to get your refund. With a weekly recylcing program there is no reason to impose a deposit.

Re: The Embankment Restaurant

Does this restaurant even have a sign? The only reason I knew it existed was I happened to drive by yesterday and saw people sitting at outdoor tables. I drive by there all the time and never noticed it. I didn't find out the name of the place until we walked inside and looked at a menu. I couldn't believe when I found this thread and saw that it has been open for almost 3 months.

Anyhow, we did end up going there for brunch today.
It was full when we first got there and we had to wait a few minutes for a table. Once we were seated the service was extremely slow. After placing our order we had to wait at least 25-30 minutes for the food to arrive. (For some reason slow service seems to be a common trait of JC restaurants). I ordered the french toast with fruit. The plate arrived and looked very messy. It was 3 pieces of french toast smothered in what appeared to be cooked apple slices, and chopped potatos. The chopped potatoes were not even mentioned on the menu for this dish. The french toast was not great. I think it was made with the same type of italian bread that you would find on the table at dinner. I certainly would not get that dish again. The other people in my party had the burger and the pasta/shrimp dish, both of which they said were good. Prices seemed reasonable. I would probably go back.

When I rented my apartment the landlord paid the broker's fee. It is probably more common than you think. It helps them rent out the place faster due to people like yourself (and me) who do not want to pay the fee.

Well it was 4 years ago so I don't remember exactly which ads I saw where, as I used many sites including Craigslist, apartments.com, rent.net, etc. Honestly I don't see it as a big deal that these luxury apartments are being listed on Craigslist as opposed to any other site.

But has there really been an *increase* in these ads? I remember seeing a lot of ads for apartments in those buildings even 4 years ago when I was first moving to JC. People move in for a year or two, then the rent increase becomes unaffordable, and they move out.

But I do agree we need more moderately priced housing.

Trenton is more closely associated with Philly than NYC. Like others have said, unless they have a non-stop train between Trenton and NYC I would never move there. It's also too far from the airports.

The only time you will lose reception is during heavy thunderstorms. On a typical rainy or snowy day you have nothing to worry about. Reception issues rarely last for more than a minute or two and are few and far between. With Comcast the outages tend to be more common and last for longer periods of time.

Why don't you want a dish? Directv offers virtually every channel in HD now. I have been a customer for over 2 years with no complaints. Comcast's HD offerings are terrible around here. You'll only get a handful of HD channels on Comcast.

While we are on the topic, how are we supposed to dispose of styrofoam? I had a barrel out last night full of styrofoam blocks and it was ignored by the garbage and recycle pickups. My only choice now is to bag it so it can't be seen and then maybe they'll pick it up.

I have seen cops on my street roll down the window and throw stuff out. How can they ticket people for littering when they do it themselves.

I am especially surprised at the amount of litter that remains around schools. Don't they pay full time janitorial staff? The charter school on 9th & Manila is disgusting. The entire building is surrounded by litter. When people see litter on the ground it makes them feel it is ok to throw more. Broken windows theory....

Just had to share this story. I went out to my car yesterday, which was parked on Arlington Ave. The back window was completely rolled down. I have power windows, it had been a warm day, and I must have accidentally put down the window in the back the day before and not noticed. I had left a nice leather coat, wallet, money, ipod, expensive phone in the package I was returning to the store, etc, etc, inside the car. Stupid to leave that stuff, I know, but the point is---nothing had been disturbed! Wow--on the streets of JC, and not even the best street, no one availed themselves of an easy opportunity to reach in a car left wide open for nearly 24 hours. One of my happiest days here--and a gentle reminder to me to be more careful altogether.

The thieves probably walked by and thought it was a setup.

I know you can request a credit if service is out for more than 24 hours. Although that probably doesn't apply to a partial outage like what occurred yesterday.

So many people using the argument about cars cutting through various downtown streets to get to the Holland Tunnel. These are public streets. Everyone has the right to use them no matter where they are going. I cut through all kinds of streets in the Heights to get from 1/9 back to downtown. I just don't see how you can single out people driving to the tunnel as poor drivers that are contributing to any potential traffic issues that may exist.

No, this is not how it works.

The law says you must yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk. As you approach a crosswalk you must stop and yield to pedestrians wating to cross. Pedestrians should *not* have to wait for all the cars to pass and then cross.

Robin.

I understand yielding to peds in a crosswalk. I'm looking at it from a pedestrian's point of view. Just because a crosswalk is there doesn't mean you should just walk into the street with your head down (which happens all the time). Let's say the oncoming car is only a foot or two from entering the crosswalk, it doesn't matter how fast or slow they are going, they will not be able to stop in time. The law is not going to save you here. This is when common sense comes into play. Besides, how many people don't even bother to use the crosswalk...fines should be issued for jaywalking.

Just kidding, but this is seriously a bad idea.

This is a local, secret, efficient path out of Jersey City. Consider those of us who need to get places outside of JC. You'd be making us stop and go for a half mile or so. That's SO inefficient and bad for everyone. It's bad for mileage. It's bad for brakes. It's bad for noise. It's bad for time. It's bad for exhaust fumes. It's bad for asthma. It's bad for pedestrians. It's bad for everyone stopping and going suddenly and increasing the risk of accidents.

The answer is not stop-signs.

I couldn't agree more. Stopping at every intersection is ridiculous. I don't condone speeding through downtown, but at the same time I think pedestrians just need to start using the common sense they learned in 1st grade - look both ways before crossing! There is no excuse for the people that just stroll into the street while talking on their cell phones and listening to Ipods and expect the world to stop for them because they are crossing. You wait until the intersection is clear and then cross. I'm tired of dumbing down everything to compensate for people's stupidity.

Doesn't the towing company have to report your license plate to the police dept. if they are towing your car? Otherwise how would you know if it was towed or stolen. Many years ago in New Brunswick I came back and found my car was gone. At first I thought it was stolen so I flagged down a cop car that happened to be passing by. He radioed in the license plate number and found out where it had been towed to.
