Hear, hear.

Atheists are the most intolerant, bigoted and disrespectful to other people's faith.

That is, of course, when they are not afraid of those other people.

Bullshit... Atheists have never once asked you not to believe in god. We've never stopped you from partaking in your religion. We've never asked you to contribute to our charities. We've never as a group organized to control your life or to convert you to our belief system. And nobody has ever killed in the name of Atheism." We've only asked for one thing, that you simply keep your religions out of a government that belongs to all of us.

I will however give you the fact that there is a good side to religion. It gives people hope, it gives people a reason to be good and in many cases people have used the call of god or the organization to achieve good in this world. But none of that goodness proves the core of religion, that a god actually exists.

"Oh, and if you are going to lay the line on that Hitler and Lenin and Stalin were atheists, that may or may not be true, but what is true, is the only reason they espoused atheism is to quash any religious leadership so the clerics couldn't rally the masses, not because they truly believed in Atheism.

It's the church that quashes teaching kids about protected sex. Kids are going to have sex... if the church has any sense of common sense about reality, it would encourage the teaching of and the use of contraception.

Of course who ever claimed belief in a mythological "all powerful old man up in the sky who controls everything" was sensible? Oh wait, all you believers.

Oh my, 7 Delays in one month, how awful? And in a lot of these cases, I'll bet the time between scheduled trains was less than the delays, so instead of taking the published train you want, you managed to catch the prior train. Oy, what a problem. Again, considering the age of the system, and the number of people they serve during rush hour, I have no idea how one can call it "pathetic."

Re: PATH (pathetic attempt at transporting humans)

Yes the PATH has problems. What large public infrastructure these days doesn't? But I take offense at the "Pathetic" in the title of this thread. I'd say in the last 2 years that I've been using PATH on a daily basis, it's caused me to be late to work once. And that was probably no more than an extra 20 minutes, simply because I had to use the WTC line rather than the 33rd Street line.

Is it overcrowded during rush hour, sure, but considering the system was built over 100 years ago (I'm guessing), it's pretty incredible. I don't think anyone could have foreseen this level of traffic back then.

The reality in life is that not to many things are perfect. PATH comes close to providing perfect service on most days. I'm all for having folks post topical issues about something gone wrong on a specific day, or other advisories. But the only thing pathetic are those people who constantly whine about how pathetic PATH is.

Re: ABBONDANZA TRATTORIA at Liberty Harbor
Home away from home
Home away from home

On the recommendations from this board and a neighbor, we tried this restaurant a few days before Thanksgiving (2011). I really wanted to like this place as it was convenient, a short drive and a parking lot. We walked in and loved the atmosphere, the bread was good, and our appetizers, which I can't remember what they were, seemed good. Then came the main courses. My wife had lasagna which had pasta that was incredibly mushy and needed quite a bit of salt. I had the Frute de Mar (Pasta with seafood), and the pasta was also very overcooked, the sauce was very thin and also lacked seasoning. It was all edible and I wasn't gong to make a fuss over it, but when the waitress asked how the food was, I explained that although we were finished and ate it all, neither of us were satisfied and explained what we thought was wrong with the dishes. Both the chef and the hostess quickly showed up at our table to hear our concerns and offered a dessert, which we declined. They expressed their sorrow and asked us to come back at a later date. We agreed that we would give them a second chance. Any restaurant can have an off night.

Last week we finally returned. I started with a stuffed artichoke appetizer and again found it needed quite a bit of salt to make up for the blandness. Then I had veal marsala which was okay but nothing to write home about, also bland, and my wife had chicken abodanza (chicken with sausage, peppers, onions and other vegetables in a tomato sauce). She also felt the dish was incredibly bland. We finished our dinners, paid our bill and left...

We will not return. I'm sort of saddened by this as I stated before, this would be a great place for us to go, if only the food was up to the atmosphere, service and location.

I'll stick with our tried and true in Bayonne, Cafe Bello.

The simplest answer is to eliminate ALL religious based holidays as a reason for closing schools. However in this atmosphere of "attacks on religion" that would never happen.

I've been reading all the complaints on this board about the LSP 9/11 Memorial. I finally had the chance to go over and view it a few weekends ago and I have to say to you folks complaining, You are so wrong. It is tastefully done, it's not to big for the sight, its size is commensurate with the occasion it is memorializing and I found it very moving.

Rant Mode ON
What I sense here is the same type of opinions that are pervading the rest of society now, if it's not up to a person's ideal it must be awful. Do you people have nothing better to do than whine about something that wasn't designed to your specifications? Why do I have a feeling that anything put there would piss most of you off. Grow up already. If the memorial is blocking your view, dammit, move a little to the left or right, there is plenty of space to move, and you'll see what you want. If you don't like the look of the memorial, go find something you do like.
Rant Mode OFF

For those who haven't seen it, here are some pictures I took during my visit. The LSP Memorial pics are about a third of the way down the page

By that logic, any straight couple who can't, for whatever reason, reproduce should also be denied the right to adopt. I have to say your comment is the most asinine thing I've heard on this topic yet... guess it fits, given your name.

Goof-ball, a straight couple are so 'designed' that they are able to have children, but if there is a medical condition they can't, should be give help. A gay married couple are so 'designed' that they can never have children.

Re: PATH (pathetic attempt at transporting humans)

The real moral of the story is "Be a little earlier." If you had been on the track just a minute or so earlier, you might have actually made the train, but when you try to cut it that close, sometimes you are going to get burned.
I live in a condo with a shuttle to the Grove St. Station that leaves every 20 minutes on time. There are a few A**holes who run to the shuttle just as it's scheduled to leave, delay the shuttle and then bitch at the driver. The driver is just doing his job, trying to keep to a schedule. If people just got to their embarkation point just a bit earlier, so many problems would go away.

Re: Tax Abatement Service Charge Liability
Home away from home
Home away from home

Be very careful with this. I purchased in Port Liberte 15 years ago with a tax abatement. Jersey City issues two kinds of bills to me on a regular basis. The first is the Tax Abatement Service Charge Liability and the second is a standard Real Estate Tax Bill.

The Abatement bill comes twice a year but is only on the "improvements" aka the building. The Real Estate Tax is on the land only and comes 4 times a year.

My problems started when my original mortgage company decided it only needed to pay the Real Estate Taxes and not the Abatement charges. However Jersey City was sending me both bills marked "Advice Only, Do Not Pay." to my home. What I didn't realize was that they were also sending arrears notices regarding the abatement charges to my old address. Three years in, the person occupying my old address decided to forward me those notices, which included a foreclosure letter.

The mortgage company, which btw had purchased my loan, told me that they refused to pay both bills, but they also refused to let me pay both bills. On the other hand, the Jersey City Tax Office refused to start marking the Abatement charges as real bills while leaving the Real Estate Taxes as "Advice only. I paid off the 3 years of Abatement Charges and penalties. And from that point on, I paid the Abatement Charges even though they were marked "Advice Only."

My loan was eventually sold again to JPMorganChase Bank and when I re-financed with them, I made it a condition that I would carry NO escrow, and I would pay all my taxes directly.

My advice, check with the tax collectors office to see if this same situation applies. The abatements that are issued are often just for the building, not your share of the land underneath them, and you also may have 2 sets of bills.

And lastly, go to the Jersey City online tax rolls and search out your property. This can be found here

One thing I did notice, and I'm not sure exactly when it happened, is that without a cablebox, we are losing the ability to tune in a lot of the cable channels via a TV's QAM tuner. Comcast is encrypting a whole lot of the non-broadcast channels, both HD and SD so that you can't receive them without one of their boxes, and therefore an "additional outlet fee."

Well, I actually have to give Comcast a bit of a kudo on this. Based on a comment here about the DTAs being totally free, I went over to their office and picked one up. I now have it hooked in line to my Series 1 TiVo which has lifetime service on it. So for no cost at all (except a $1.99 transaction fee) I maintain DVR service in our back bedroom/office for quite a few more years. Setup was reasonably simple, and while it's not high quality, it is Standard Def after all, it's good enough for the grandkids when they visit.

Do you have digital if not then it might have been removed from the line up. This is Comcasts way of converting their customers to the more expensive digital cable. Pretty soon their will be no more regular cable just broadcast channels for a premium price. Get FIOS you get lots more for your money. You can get the Quad package, Home phone, internet, TV, and cell. Maybe it was better when the Newport area had New York supplied cable television.

I'm not a fan of Comcast, but there are valid reasons for Comcast's conversion to Digital. The same frequency space that can carry ONE analog channel can carry close to a dozen Digital Standard Definition channels and three High Definition channels. I'm all for any technology that allows more channels, especially HD channels down that pipe. On the other hand, I'm pretty pissed that they encrypt all those channels that were originally part of the basic service so those of us with a Digital Cable Ready (QAM) Tuner can't receive them without a box and the "Additional Outlet Fee."

970-C New Brunswick Ave.

Rahway, NJ 07065

PH: 732-882-0007

Hours: 10am-6pm Mon-Sat,
12-5pm Sun

This place has their main warehouse in Rahway, NJ, about 5 minutes off of Exit 12 on the turnpike. They have thousands of rolls of different fabrics at great prices. The one thing they don't seem to have is a very helpful staff. Don't get me wrong, they are all courteous, they just didn't help me with picking out fabrics.

They also have padding, batting and all sorts of other materials

Not knowing anything about reupholstering, I found their website, drove down there and bought the 3 yards of material I liked and re-did 8 dining room chairs for a grand total of $12, my time and my driving expenses. And my wife was thrilled.

The real insult here is that while all the postings at the terminals and the website claim that they've only raised their rates 8% over 3 years, the price of a 10-Trip ticket has effectively gone up 15%. They removed the 10-Trip discount, so the price of the Port Liberte-Pier 11 10-Trip went from $80.25 to $92.50.
I'd venture to say that 10-Trip Tickets are a very big part of their sales. For me, the drive into the city, including parking, is cheaper now than the ferry and subway combo.

Re: Stop using the word "retarded"
Home away from home
Home away from home

Kramones,
What specifically about the word "retarded" is derogatory? The only thing that makes it so is that we allow it to be. The people we are talking about are, for one reason or another, slower than average, which is exactly what the word "retarded" means. If we all stood together and stood up for the disadvantaged (which I'm sure you do) and took back the word "retarded" it would mean just what it is meant to mean, nothing more, nothing less.

BTW, there is a special place in my heart for anyone who teaches, cares for or otherwise helps special people. Thank you for your work.

Re: Stop using the word "retarded"
Home away from home
Home away from home

Here's the real point, and it's not just limited to the word "retard" or phrase "mentally retarded." Rather than run away from words which go from being clinical to derogatory, defend what the clinical usage represents. Rather than let the idiots of the world claim "retard" as an insult, fight the battle of explaining the issues of retardation.

In my experience, most mentally retarded people are wonderful human beings. They are often happy people with great intentions, even though they may be frustrated by the world around them. My sister Abbie always had a smile on her face. Those who are capable of doing work if trained typically do their jobs well. Of course they're not perfect, they suffer from an infliction they did not create. Yet in most cases they just soldier on through life without complaints.

The community supporting the Mentally Retarded should fight to own the phrase, just as they fight to support their family member or friend. If you just run away from the word, the next phrase you choose becomes the next derogatory phrase. For instance "Special" now becomes "Speschuuuuul," and perhaps even more derogatory than the word it replaces.

Instead of letting the ignorant and the idiots humiliate others with "retard" explain to them the error of their ways. Educate them. If that fails ostracize them, not the retarded. I know, it's a difficult task. It's easy to run away from a word, but you'll keep running from one word then the next, and in the long run, that's far worse.

Chester,
I don't care about fashion. I care about truth and reality. "Mentally retarded" was the correct phrase then, and is still the correct phrase. If it offends you, that is your problem.

To quote dictionary.com "Retard": to make slow; delay the development or progress of (an action, process, etc.); hinder or impede.

In this case we are talking about humans with delayed mental development. Just because others have chosen to belittle the word with their ignorance of the issues or perhaps their own miserableness does not take away the reality of the symptoms or the diseases that cause it or the situation of the individuals or families that to deal with this awful status. I have wonderful memories of my mentally retarded sister (now no longer with us) and refuse to let people who choose to belittle others ruin that.

Re: Stop using the word "retarded"

Home away from home

I grew up with a sister who at the time was referred to as "mentally retarded." It meant simply that, her mental functions were retarded or "slow compared to the norm." It was not offensive then, and I do not consider the term offensive now. Words are simply words, they become offensive only in the context or tone they are used in. To say a child with brain illness is "mentally retarded" is simply statement of fact. To label someone you don't like a "retard" could indeed be offensive. But to label a word offensive when it's just being used with its defined intent is offensive in itself.
We now have a culture where "PC," Politically Correct, has just become to pervasive. To the families and friends of mentally handicapped people, they are mentally retarded, accept that fact. The term is not derogatory, it is simply a statement of fact.
