Re: New Kansas City style BBQ restaurant. opening tonight!!

Home away from home

So we went last night (my boyfriend and I) He ordered the ribs and mac n cheese and I got the briskett and mac n cheese.

Let me start by saying the briskett was heaven.... HEAVEN! the mac n cheese... ehhh, were used to down south real mac n cheese, this was pretty dry and not very cheesy at all.. he didnt even eat his.

His ribs looked good but again, he was not offered any sauce on the sides, and obviously was expecting the saucy version. I was excited to see the dry rub cause I hate the saucy version. Anyways He scraped all of the seasoing off lol he said it burnt his lips... whatev

It was 30.00 for two dinners definitely not an weekly thing we would do... I would have been satisified with rice n beans and pernil for 12.00

A fight escalates to a city-wide assist as Jersey City police respond to a reported gun at Lincoln High School
By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

police-at-lincoln-high-school.JPGJoe Shine PhotoJersey City police from all districts report to Lincoln High School after a gun was suspected to be on the premises. No gun has been found at this time.Jersey City police have beefed up security at Lincoln High School after a large fight rolled through the school this morning, resulting in an injury to a teacher who was apparently struck with a fire extinguisher and the arrest of four students, officials said.

There was a large police response to the school located at Crescent and Communipaw and Crescent avenues following the fight that began around 10:15 a.m. on one floor of the school and continued onto a second floor, Police Chief Tom Comey said on the school steps at about 11:20 a.m.

The chief said police are still in the process of viewing security video of the fight in order to determine what charges will be filed against the two juvenile and two adult students being detained. He said additional arrests are possible.

The massive response by police and ambulances was triggered by a report that one of those involved in the fight had a gun, Comey said, adding that police searched the entire school and no gun was found. The chief said police are still trying to determine what started the fight.

"We are going to make sure, for residents and those at the school, that the rest of the school days goes without a hitch," said Comey of the heightened police presence. "But again, if two people want to fight and they are 10 feet from a police officer, then they are going to fight."

News helicopters hovered over the school following the fight and groups of people stood in front of their homes and on street corners.

Additional information on the incident, including the names of the adults who were arrested, is expected later today.

At least they were doing something recreational rather then running in wild packs and robbing people like a lot of youths in JC are doing nowadays. Yes, I would be aggravated about a flying soccer ball dropping my kid, what happened to the old adage kids will be kids? It was soccer, it wasn't skateboarding, were they intentionally aiming for your head? I don't think so... The cops could have suggested a more open spot to play in the park though, but I am sure they are just greatful they are doing normal kid things at that point

Cops, Crime, RTN ?
Second victim of drunk driving Jersey City cop dies
By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal
April 26, 2010, 2:50PM
Ruth Zelaya and Carlo.JPGRuth Zelaya, shown here with her son Jose Carlo, 2, has died from injuries she suffered when off-duty Jersey City police officer Kevin Freibott slammed into the vehicle she was in on the Pulaski Skyway in 2007. Jose Carlo died in the crash.
Complications have claimed the life of the woman left in a nearly vegetative state the vehicle she rode in was struck by a drunk, off-duty Jersey City police officer in a Pulaski Skyway crash that claimed the life of her 2-year-old son, officials confirmed today.

Ruth Zelaya, 40, of Jersey City and San Pedro Sula, Honduras, died on March 24 as a result of "complications from the motor vehicle collision," said Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Michael D'Andrea this morning.

Zelaya's death is not expected to result in additional charges against former Jersey City Police Officer Kevin Freibott, 42, of Red Bank, who is serving an 11-year sentence for the Jan. 23, 2007 crash that killed young Jose Carlos Zelaya.

Freibott pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide, assault by auto and drunk driving in a plea deal which included language saying the "state agrees that the plea resolves all charges from the incident and will not pursue any additional charges in the event Ruth Zelaya succumbs to her injuries..."

"Certainly my thoughts and prayers are with the Zelaya family and I think Mr. Freibott is very fortunate that we had the foresight when we negotiated this plea on his behalf to make sure the agreement protected him in the event that Mrs. Zelaya was to succumb to her injuries," said Freibott's attorney, John Young, of the Jersey City firm of Willis and Young.

In January 2008 Freibott was sentenced to seven years for vehicular homicide, 4 years for assault by auto, and 30 days for drunk driving. If the former officer serves his entire sentence he will be released on May 11, 2016, but he becomes eligible for parole on May 13, 2014, according to state corrections records.

Ruth Zelaya in critical condition.JPGJournal file photoRuth Zelaya shown here in critical condition at Jersey City Medical CenterOn the day of the crash Ruth Zelaya and her son were in the back seat of a Pontiac Grand Prix; her husband, Carlos Zelaya, was the front seat passenger, and her brother, Raul Posas-Penada of Jersey City, was driving.

Freibott's speeding Jeep Cherokee slammed into the back of the Grand Prix - hitting it with so much force that his SUV went over the car, flipped onto it's roof and came to rest some distance ahead of the car. Freibott's blood-alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit.

Little Jose Carlo suffered severe head trauma and died a few days later. Ruth Zelaya had been semi-comatose spent the time since the crash in various hospitals and rehabilitation centers contending with numerous complications of her injuries.

Freibott was hired by Jersey City in December 2005 as a transfer from another police department, despite a record including a previous DWI, seven car accidents, seven moving violations and three license suspensions. He is a cousin of Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy.

The Zelaya family is being represented in a civil suit by attorney Sam Davis who also sued Madison Square Garden for $18 million, alleging Freibott was served alcohol at the arena prior to the crash even though the former officer was already intoxicated.

"You are not to make a sale to a intoxicated individual" under New York state law, said Davis at the time. The lawyer, who could not be reached today, accused the Garden of giving Freibott enough beers to "stop a Clydesdale." It's not clear how Ruth Zelaya's death will affect the suits.

Kevin Freibott.JPGJournal file photoFormer Jersey City Police Officer Kevin Freibott faces additional charges with the death of Ruth Zelayas Ruth Zelaya and her son had come from Honduras to the United States with her husband who is an airline worker and was receiving training at Newark Liberty International Airport at the time of the fatal crash.

Carlos Zelaya could not be reached for comment today. It's not clear if he is in the United States or if he has returned to Honduras.

19-Year-Old Murder Suspect Allegedly "Wanted to Feel What It Was Like to Shoot Somebody"
By BRIAN THOMPSON
Updated 9:20 AM EDT, Sat, Apr 10, 2010

Print Email Share Buzz up!TWITTER FACEBOOK

Three 19-year-olds have been charged with the murders of Nia Haqq, 25 and Michael Muchioki, 27 outside their Jersey City home last weekend after they had returned from an engagement party.

And sources told NBCNewYork that one of the teenaged women told investigators, "I just wanted to feel what it was like to shoot somebody."

"She should have served her country," said Nia's mother, Majeeda Haqq after she was told that quote. "That's what she should of did if she felt she needed to feel what it felt like to pull a trigger on someone. She should have took her behind to Iran(sic)," Haqq added.

Haqq and Muchioki were brutally gunned down after they got out of their car at three in the morning. Lawmen were stunned then, and stunned again on learning that one of the young women actually suggested it was some sort of "thrill kill."

Suspect Latonia Bellamy, 19, of Jersey City.
Suspect Darmelia Lawrence, 19. "That's cold-blooded," said Hudson County Sheriff Juan Perez. "You took the lives of two individuals. How can you even sleep by saying such a statement, it's horrible," Perez said.

"We will go after them," Haqq said. And she added "Whatever we can do to make sure they never step outside of a cell again, we're gonna do it... because they have stolen my sunshine."

Bail for the two women, Darmelia Lawrence and Latonia Bellamy, was set a $1 million cash each, and for Shiquan Bellamy (Latonia's cousin) it was set at $2 million. All three face felony murder, armed robbery and weapons charges.

Bellamy served 10 months in prison last year after being convicted of two counts of selling drugs near a school.

But NBCNewYork learned that after getting out on parole in October, a warrant for his arrest was issued January 27 "for failure to meet conditions of parole," according to State Parole Board Spokesman Neal Buccino.

Buccino said Bellamy had failed to attend a community resource program.

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy, after calling the murders "an act of pure and random viciousness," said the entire community "felt a bit of relief ... knowing these killers are behind bars (in) the first step in the healing process for our city."

Im sorry but its shit like this that makes me want to see death penalty, just a complete disregard for someone life, and its not like they shot them in the leg, you executed them you wanted them dead and at 19 you know the finality of death.

I do not think its an issue of not caring. How much more as a resident can we do? This city, your great city... is run by the most corrupt politicians ever... If they are not willing to make it great, it will never be great. Cops are paid off to let dealers continue to deal, everyone has a hand in something. So cmon lets me real at look at the whole package. They are the enablers of our demise.

And I don't want to comment on this thread anymore on this subject, I suggest it be moved to something else that bitches about Greenville Or B/L and how much downtown is better. This thread should be kept on its original subject and the terrible tragedy that these families have suffered.

I semi-agree. Add Greenville to the list as well. If we remove Greenville and B-L, this would be a pretty safe city of 175,000 or so.

My error,I negated to include the Greenville section as well.
Fact is, theres a certain element that will never rise above because of their own doing, proof is in the pudding, all the entitlment programs, subsidized housing, etc, etc...what else can society do???

F**** both of you. There are very good and hard working people who live in these neighborhoods. Racist CACs. Suddenly anyone from Greenville or Bergen/Lafayette is uncivilized? JC should separate itself from Downtown since it's infested with a bunch of half assed wannabe Manhattanites who do nothing but complain and whine about trivial BS.

Racism? To me, the Latin Lounge in name is racist. If a bar attracts a certain demographic or color of skin, then fine...but to NAME it after that predominant culture is a little "exclusive" of others, isn't it?

aoao - if I opened up a bar and named it "Club Caucasian", you wouldn't call me and my bar racist?

Latin Lounge refers to the music that is played there, as well as the live bands they have... I go there and im clearly not Latin...

You obviously don't live in the neighborhood. Night after night, especially in summertime, the Latin Lounge patrons are screaming and yelling and booming music till 2 or 3 AM. Then they and the Indios cretins pile into the streets to yell and brawl with each other.

No, your right I do not live in the neighborhood... So I would not know, but point well taken. Although I do assume that majority of bars at closing have some sort of ruckus from drunk patrons... right? Like are they gonna shut down the beer garden? no, and one may wonder why.. If they raised rents then where would I go? Just because I pay a lower rent doesn't mean i'm a bad person. I dont live downtown cause simply put, I cannot afford it. Should Jersey City be only for people who can afford 1200 a month for a studio? I am just curious as to your thought process.

Woman shot dead on Logan Avenue in Jersey City, police seek her ID

woman-shot-dead-defazio.JPGReena Rose Sibayan/The Jersey JournalHudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio, left, and a homicide detective are at the scene where a woman was shot dead this morning on Logan Avenue near Wright Avenue in Jersey City.A woman was killed with one gunshot to the back of the head in Jersey City's Marion Section in the early hours this morning and homicide detectives seek the public's help in identifying the woman and her murderer, officials said this afternoon.

"I woke up when I heard two or three gunshots and then I heard a thump that must have been the body falling," said a neighbor of the body found at Logan and Wright avenues at about 4:30 a.m. today.

The woman, who did not want her name used, said she's lived across the street from where the body was found for 20 years and has never seen trouble in the area before.

Police responding on a 911 call of shots being fired this morning found the "adult female," lying face down next to a garbage can and a locked gate at the front of an alleyway between two buildings, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said. "In close proximity to the victim's hand was a crumpled $20 bill."

The woman had one gunshot wound to the back of her head and there was no exit wound but police have not yet determined the range at which the bullet was fired. No spent shells were found at the scene. She had no wallet, purse or identification on her.

"We are interviewing individuals that may have some information but at this point there is no suspect," said DeFazio, adding that the motive of the murder has not yet been determined but said the investigation is at a very preliminary stage. "Our first priority is identification of the victim."

The prosecutor also said an autopsy on the victim should be completed later today and that may provide additional information, especial if the bullet if recovered from her head.

Anyone with information on the identity of the victim or on the shooting is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345.

Just doing my best to be politically correct so people don't jump down my throat and throw "racist" around. It's so much easier for people do call others racist rather than addressing the actual problem and admitting the truth.

I have a problem when people misuse the word racist. It gives racism a bad name and takes the strength out of the content of it's character.

When writing anonymously, readers have nothing to judge other than your words. We don?t know how great and generous and compassionate you are in real life if your language doesn?t reflect it. The following are two examples from this thread of careless and hurtful language. I?m not accusing anyone of being intentionally malicious, nor am I claiming to know the inner workings of your heart and mind. I?m suggesting that, if you aren?t malicious and don?t intend harm, thinking carefully about what you write can make sure you aren?t misunderstood.

First, @downright intentionally brought race into the discussion by saying that the people who cause trouble at the mall are ?not white nor Asian. Mostly black.? It would have been fine to note that the specific people involved in a specific incident were black (or white, or teens, or any other factual truth) ? but it crosses a line to move from talking about specifics to generalizing about an entire group. Saying ?I do not like the behavior of some black people? suggests that @downright believes there is something about being black that makes people behave badly. (That may not be what was meant but it?s what your words suggest.)

Second, several comments on this thread referred to the human beings involved in the incident(s) as ?trash? and ?garbage.? There is a long history of using language like this to justify hatred of an entire group or race. Two historic examples are blacks? status in the US as less than fully human to justify enslaving them (you can?t own a human but you can own property ? see the Supreme Court?s Dred Scott decision). And Nazi propaganda under Hitler called Jews ?vermin? as a way to justify exterminating them. I?m NOT suggesting that anyone meant AT ALL to link themselves to either Nazis or slave owners. But when you use the same rhetorical devices that they used, the people reading can think you?re doing it on purpose.

Unbelievably well said!! I whole heartedly agree. Although you may not be a racist, your words, are indeed very much so.
