Agreed! My dog agrees too.

A petition with such "demands" feels like the completely wrong approach to make toward your big fancy new neighbor who has already gone above and beyond what most developers would do.

Way to look a gift horse in the mouth.

I would feel as you do if your assumptions were accurate.

The developer is fine with a small space for a dog run. The peitition is to the city. The developer's gracious offer and support for the dog run are not the issues that generated the petition, but the city's refusal to provide a dog run in a space that they will construct for residents.

A dog run is a reasonable request considering that the new park will include two spaces for dogs.

Well since you put it that way it sounds much more reasonable...petition away!!

This is great news!!! There is alot going on in the downtown area: Newark Ave redevelopment, Hamilton Park redevelopment, roads are being ripped up and repaved, new trees are popping up everywhere and of course, new housing/buildings being built all around us! I like the changes and pride being put into our community.

Waste Management Not Fully Emptying Public Cans
Home away from home
Home away from home

Just wanted to give a heads up to all residents who have a public garbage can near their home or business. Make sure you check to see that Waste Management, the company contracted for garbage removal by the JCIA, is removing ALL the garbage from the public cans. I have already caught them on several occasions removing the excess or overflow from an overfilled can on Monmouth and not dumping the garbage INSIDE the can! Today, in fact, they removed the overflow and about two thirds of the trash in the can and left the rest. We all know certain cans in our neighborhood tend to get overfilled rather quickly ( the Monmouth can being one of them) and their little lazy scam isn't helping. Call Waste Mangement at 973-482-9336 to get it resolved. Or call JCIA @201-432-4645 ext 625. Thanks!

Because dogs can be unpredictable, something can set them off for no reason and endanger the safety of others and themselves. I own a two year old pit bull that is ALWAYS kept on a leash. How would you feel if you saw my dog meandering 5 feet away from me off leash because I, as the owner, know my dog so well and felt he would never disobey me. Or if I felt nothing ever could spook him into going after another dog or person because he would NEVER do that. If you saw him off leash would you feel nervous or intimidated by it? We'll some people do, rightfully so. If I am required to keep my pit bull on a leash BY LAW then so should others, accross the board no matter what the breed. I can't tell you how many times an unleashed dog has come out of nowhere while I am walking my dog and run right up to my dog setting him off. My dog likes some dogs and dislikes others. Why should I be subjected to unleashed dogs charging my dog because some owner TRUSTS his dog to obey him. Leash your dog ...NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

I like the responses so far.

what about a solution to the graffiti - I understand we need to get the youth off the streets but there will always be the strays that tag the area - can we develop a cleaning organization and or hotlines to report taggers? A new sign goes up and days later a new tag is written, scratched or painted on it.

Same goes for litter - only animals live intheir own filth. Is there any place we can call to report a chronic litterer? I have seen people unwrap a candy bar and then purposely walk to the curb to throw out their trash as if it was a trash bin. I heard that homeowners were once responsible for litter on their property, if they did not clean it the would be fined. Is legislation like that being discussed at this time. a) it would make money for the city, b) would hold the citizens responsible to for being part of the solution, c) may lead to less street litter - less streetsweepers. Maybe it is a dream, but I never had a littering problem in any comunity I lived in until now. The JCPD could also walk the main roads and hand out fines to litterers, even if it is only a couple times a month - once peple find out JC is cracking down on litter there will be more thought before tossing a wrapper ont he ground. Is there any solution you can come up with? I want to write to the politicians running for office for this election, but would like to do so with the most refined solutions I can come up with.

For Graffiti removal call the JCIA Graffiti Coordinator Pat Farulla 201-432-4645 ext. 634. I have called numerous times and they have come out and removed the graffiti, it may take them a week...usually less ( due to the large amount of graffiti they deal with) but they will come and sandblast or paint over it! Hope this helps.

Years ago, when I used to work in the Financial District of New York, I would travel there by NY Waterway ferry and it was a fairly enjoyable commute. I can remember when the World Trade Center PATH reopened (due to the attacks) and the NY Waterway actually RAISED their ticket prices rather then LOWER them to compete with the PATH! I could not believe that with the impending PATH opening that they would raise prices, they knew that they would be losing some commuters due to the PATH but they raised ticket prices anyway..pushing even more commuters away. Why would any business do this? I say NO BAILOUT for the NY Waterway!

One thing that stands out in my mind was that Kook and Sons came in with an estimate that was double the price, and they wanted to demo the slate.

Don't ever use Kook and Sons, they are way overpriced! I used them about 1 year ago and was not happy at all.

My point exactly.....

Once something is reported and a police report is generated it goes into stats. Even if it's not a crime ie: auto accident and a PD report is generated it goes into the reporting agencies data base that is incorporated into the States data base. This is how our insurance companies know if we had any accidents that we didn't report. I don't think it's that easy to fudge or manipulate these figures once the file number is generated.

I think and not 100% sure but it's my understanding that it's all basically one system that feeds off each other.

There was a 20 person fight on Monmouth...no arrests made...no report filed = it never happened.

2. lets join the 40 other states that allow the right to carry.
Unlike other states NJ can lead the way in gun safety by having mandatory strict testing for all carrying civilians and make them carry gun insurance. it would be a great tax revenue for a state that loves to tax the life out of us.

3. mandatory death penalty for any 1st degree murder. I dont care if it doesnt deter crime. little chance of a dead man escaping jail.

How about Jersey City having a larger police force that will take a proactive approach to crime rather then a reactive one.

Re: Graffiti - Downtown

The graffiti at 161 Newark Ave (Barrow St. side) is getting out of hand! Maybe 6 months prior, that whole wall was redone and looked clean. NOW look at it...disgusting. I called the JCIA- graffiti extension and reported it and they said they are not sure when they can get to it because there is so much on their plate right now. Why can't the business/landlord take care of this. Why don't people step up and paint over graffiti immediately, not wait a month or 2 or 8 so that one tag doesnt breed more. People who tag businesses and homes should be delt with harshly. If I had my way, if you are caught tagging/vandalizing someones property then you should get your hand broken..that would probably make anyone think twice about doing it again!

I respectfully disagree. Dogs are not born agressive or dominant. They develop these behaviors when owners do not take the time to or improperly correct their dogs. Each time a dog misbehaves their is a opportunity presented to correct and train the dog. If the owners correction is done out of anger the dog will become more frustrated and aggressive, if the correction is too passive the dog won't respect the owner and place themselves as the pack leader. Dogs want to be lead by their owners but if not done properly THEY will take the lead role. Owners must correct their dogs everytime a situation presents itself with calm-assertive energy, if too many opportunities are missed then obedience problems arise.
However ,I will agree with the fact that sometime owners and breeds can be mismatched. As in this unfortunate incident, 1 average size woman walking 2- 200lb (or whatever their weight was) dogs is not a good match. The woman and prob. alot of people for that matter prob couldn't handle them. So I ask, is that the dogs fault?

They need space and when the owners think, "well im a good person i can take care of them", then the animals flip because they have morans not training them and giving these large creatures space to roam. Im an animal lover and I know my Lab can turn and I give her a huge backyard. Morans, they have to get those dogs out of there and 3x's your our. By law the dogs have to be put down. they should have been put down the first time.

Giving your Lab a huge backyard so your dog doesn't "turn" is not enough to ensure a happy, healthy and well behaved dog.

In Nature: Dogs experience the world by walking. They have to earn food and water by migrating in search of it.

At Home: You can recreate this experience at home by taking your dog on a walk before providing food and water in the morning. It gives your dog three things vital to her happiness: 1) a chance to bond with you, the pack leader, 2) much-needed primal exercise, and 3) a "migration ritual" that offers a sense of purpose.

Dogs need new sights, sounds and smells.

Smaller dogs and even medium sized dogs, yes. They are def. suited for a more urban environment.. But dogs like Shepards, Rottweilers, Huskies, etc aren't... Why as a dog owner would someone want to put their animal through it?

Just doesn't make sense to me....

Your instinct on this, while common, isn't entirely correct. Big dogs often make the best apartment dogs since they are lazier and not as hyper and energetic.

The obvious problem is that the bigger dogs are, well, bigger, and take up more room in an already cramped space. But a small dog can just as easily wreck havoc on an apartment and can require much more attention and exercise.

The problem here is not the breed, it's the owner. Plain and simple.

The Bottom Line: The problem is NOT the breed, it IS the OWNER!!

-Responsible dog owners: Keep Their Dogs on Leashes no matter the temperment because even the most calm submissive dog can be triggered by things in their environment
-Responsible dog owners: Pick up after thir dog even when no one is looking or it is not in front of someones house or property (schools, parks, the Embankment, churches ext)
-Responsible dog owners: Take their dogs for one 45-60 minute walk a day or two 30 minute walks a day to exercise their dog (in addition to 2-3 short pee/poop breaks a day) A tired dog is a better behaved dog and will be much more obedient and trainable. Puttin a dog in a yard is NOT exceptable, they must be walked! Birds fly, fish swim and dogs WALK!!

8:00 ? 8:20 Crime and Police Response in Hamilton Park

A disturbing incident took place on Pavonia Avenue between Coles and Monmouth where a witness observed a neighbor's car in the process of being stolen. She called the police and was refused help because it wasn't her car. She also alerted a uniformed officer stationed a block away who also refused help with the same excuse. The HPNA made a request for an investigation into the lack of response with the East District and after initial discussion, but we have not received a follow-up report. We have invited representatives from the East District to discuss this matter with the neighborhood but so far have not received a response regarding attendance. We will discuss appropriate next steps.

I can not believe something like this could happen. What a DISGRACE!!! These 2 officers should be fired for this. Keep the pressure on them HPNA, their excuse for not stopping a crime in progress is unacceptable and shocking to say the least! Expose them and have them terminated. Ban together HP residents and do all of Jersey City a favor and get these 2 officers removed from service. UNBELIEVEABLE
