A real problem is the NRA's zero-tolerance stance towards gun controls. Controls were largely weakened in the 80's, ironically under Ronald Reagan, who must not have minded getting shot and seeing James Brady wind up in a wheelchair a few years earlier. This has led to the ease with which people can acquire guns and ammo today.

I used to be a trap boy (PULL!) at a shooting range and have fired handguns in a target range. It is not my thing, but I get that it is a hobby for people. The NRA looks at assault rifle and ammo purchase restrictions as a chipping away at the right to hunt deer and go skeet shooting. This is not rational. Assault rifles and handguns are more of an urban problem, so they don't care as much because they are safe in the woods of Kentucky.

That opinion piece is complete garbage, and it?s ironic that the author claims ?activists? have ?incredibly naive assumptions about human behavior,? to make her point. Ms. Brown, like many self-centered, unworldly Americans, seems not to comprehend that the very nature of our society, which in no small part includes a fetish for weaponry and competition, is itself a catalyst for violent thought and behavior. When we treat everything like a war, we should expect to find ourselves in the midst of one.
So in your opinion if every state were to allow concealed carry and allow law abiding citizens to own guns gun crime would go up? Because you have to remember criminals do not care about gun laws. Even if a law limiting bullets ever passed you better believe someone will be making his own rounds in his basement the next day and selling them in the streets in no time.

I won't speak for Frank_M, but I will address your questions:

"So in your opinion if every state were to allow concealed carry and allow law abiding citizens to own guns gun crime would go up?"

Yes.

"criminals do not care about gun laws."

Yes, they do. Not as much as they should, but they do.

"someone will be making his own rounds in his basement the next day and selling them in the streets in no time."

This is preferable to being able to purchase 6,000 rounds of ammo online and then going to the movies.

"Given the chance others were packing heat in theater number 9 at the Century 16 in Aurora, Colorado; the story may have ended much differently for the cold-blooded killer."

This is a tired refrain. It is more likely that the "heat-packer" would have crapped their pants, killed an innocent, gotten killed, or all of the above.

I am saddened to report on my first negative experience at Surf City.

On Saturday, after a day on the water, some friends and I walked over to the bar to grab some drinks and possibly some food. As we came within about 20 feet of the door, we heard and then saw a ruckus breaking out, and about 2-3 bouncers punching and pushing 2 patrons who were fighting, and forcibly removing them from the bar. RIGHT in front of us, the bouncers smashed the kids to the ground and pinned them.

Nevertheless, we still went in (we had run out of beer at the dock!). I told the guy checking IDs that the owners had been broadcasting on Facebook that this place was NOT going to be this kind of place, and he said something along the lines of "that's what we're trying to do and that's why we kicked those 2 out". Well, upon entering the bar and walking through to the outside, the loud thumps of bass music became audible. My face just dropped when I realized that they were blasting the exact kind of music "fist-pumping kind of music" that they said they would NOT be playing. Needless to say, the clientele was collectively pretty trashy. And the music was God awful. I like some electronic music if it's good and creative ... this was just really, really bad.

It's unbelievable that after only a few weeks, they have resorted to the type of music and clientele that THEY specifically said they would not tolerate.

What happened, Surf City?

I really want this place to work. The couple of times I was there in the daytime, I had a great time.

If you don't play hip hop or dance/trance, that kind of crowd will not come, and you will have a successful business. If you play that kind of music and let thugs in, there will be fights and the police will be there every night.

Needless to say, as we headed out, we heard and saw all sorts of loud and flashy vehicles peeling out of their parking spaces into the dark night.

If they don't change their act soon (like within a week or 2), this place will turn off every person who they initially sought to attract, and word will spread in the thug/meathead community of this new hot club, and it will very quickly become infested. It kind of already is too late, after what I saw on Saturday.

Really disappointing.

What time did this all go down? I was there around 9pm or so and it was very mellow. The music was barely audible. Beach Boys, etc. I did see some folks who looked like they might have been looking for the Sand Bar and they appeared confused and/or disappointed. We did not stay real late, though, so I can't say what happened after 11pm.

There were a couple of tv's over the bar inside. Also there was a side room with a couple of tv's. No one was inside on Saturday, though. I am sure they would put any game you want on.

The menu is still developing. They have burgers, hot dogs, chicken, wraps, and some seafood. A decent selection and variety. They will be adding more seafood to the menu. I just had a hot dog and fries, which were fine. My wife said her lobster roll was very good.

As mentioned above, it is the same set up as the Beer Garden. You order at a counter and they buzz you when it is ready.

Re: Surf City Restaurant & Megabar

Went here Saturday afternoon with the missus and the little one in a stroller. It was a very nice way to relax for a couple of hours. The bars are under canopies, so it doesn't get too hot. A breeze off the water helped, too. The south side bar was full, probably due to no one wanting to stay out in the sunny areas in the heat. The other bar on the east side was filling up when we left. Service was fast and friendly. If you just looked out at the boats in the water, you would think you were in Manasquan or Point Pleasant, so it provides a nice "escape" from the hot city. We left in the late afternoon, so I can't tell you what it was like after dark. I think if they keep playing the Beach Boys and the surf rock, that will be an effective muscle-head deterrent.

?We were concerned it would become a commercial dead man?s zone,? said Anthony Notaro, a community leader. ?It?s turned out to be the opposite.?

On this side of the Hudson, it is pretty much a commercial dead man's zone. The building is largely empty. And the ones who do work here do not venture around other than to maybe grab something at Liberty Deli for lunch. At 5:02 they are on their way back to the city or speeding up Grand to the Turnpike.

I understood that they were required to hire a certain number of Jersey City residents. Anyone know how that has worked out?

"We very much appreciate the work Steve Lipski has done to help promote the economic development of Jersey City and all of his efforts in making resources available to businesses - especially the small businesses - of our city," said Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy.

Unless he helped small businesses put up "Coming Soon" signs, I have a feeling he hasn't done anything that Healy claims.

These aren't "more" or "new" taxes. These are sales taxes that were owed to the state all along. I know no one pays them, but that is tax evasion.

What, you can't afford to join Liberty National or Bayonne? Yeah, me neither.

Galloping Hill is off the Parkway at Exit 138 in Kenilworth. That is about the only real 18-hole public course that I know of within 20 miles.

We had some of our wedding photos taken there and they look great. It is a photographer's dream. The pictures above are very cool - the contrast between the man-made and the natural. I get that they may not want it to remain in the current condition, but hopefully they can restore it and preserve much of it.

Please.

The average cost of a gallon of gasoline in NJ is around 3.80. If tomorrow they allowed self-service gasoline pumps in NJ, before long the average cost of a self-service gallon would be 3.80 and full service would be over 4.00.

I promise.

If NJ allows self-service, then the gas stations will charge the same as they are now, the difference being you will have to pump your own, and full-service will cost at least 25 cents more per gallon.

The time savings is de minimis in the grand scheme of things.

Yeah, I want to pay the same as now, but have to do it myself because you're impatient and running late.
